Why is the memory capacity of a digital camera's memory card relevant?

Hi All,
I'm new to all this . I have a question "Why is the memory capcity of a digital camera's memory card relevant?"
Thanks
Maggie

Why is the memory capcity of a digital camera's memory card relevant?
It is not to Photoshop.
But to the photographer it is extremely relevant.  It determines how many images (influenced by "quality") your camera can hold before running out of room to store pictures. A larger memory capacity for your camera will allow you to take and store more and/or higher quality images.
("Quality" in this case is determined by  image size- the number of pixels making up the image in your camera and image "compression" -  how much JPG formatting will effect your image.)
(attempted analogy coming... watch out!)
Think of the camera memory card as a linen closet to store down pillows. A small closet you can store 10 pillows on a shelf. Double the size of the closet and you can store 20 down pillows.
You also have the choice to stuff the down pillows in small sacks, allowing you to store even more pillows in the closet. The problem is after cramming the down pillows into the small container, they come out battered and not as nice as they were before storage.
Linen Closet = Memory Card
Down Pillows = images
Small sacks to stuff pillows into = JPG compression.
(and to add this this questionable analogy... the better down pillows have more feathers, and take up more room in the linen closet)
Feathers = pixels

  • Why is the IEEE 1394 Standard for digital cameras difficult to synchronize/trigger with other devices?

In the knowlege base, it generally says under "analog and digital cameras: advantages and disadvantags" that the IEEE 1394 is difficult to synchronize and trigger. Why is that exactly so and how can you solve that problem in DIAdem 8.0 when you would like to trigger your measurement inputs (accelerometers etc) together with a camera.

I would guess it is difficult to synchronize because it provides a software trigger. Latencies in the communication would make it difficult to perfectly synchronize two separate events.
Many firewire cameras also have a hardware trigger. If you were to use this with your other hardware, you would probably be able to get much better synchronization.

  • Is the Canon Powershot S2 IS Digital Camera compatible with an ipod photo?

I'm going on a roadtrip to the northwest next month and was wondering if anyone knows whether the Canon Powershot S2 IS Digital Camera compatible with an ipod photo?

You cannot, with a PC or a Mac, transfer photos from a camera directly to the iPod. You need to download the images from the camera to your computer first, then move the pictures from the computer to the iPod.
Not quite sure about that - from the Apple Store (UK):
Simply plug the iPod Camera Connector into the iPod dock connector, plug your camera’s USB cable and watch your images make their way to the iPod, ready to view in a slide show!
Compatible with iPod with color display.
    Not compatible with iPod nano.
    Requires iPod software v1.1.
    See http://www.apple.com/ipod/compatibility/cameraconnector.html for supported cameras.

  • Digital camera video = memory card

What is the best kind of memory card for videos ( making a video on a digital camera) & how many GBs should i consider on getting?

    Hi TechGirl,
There is no specific type of memory card that works best for video, but I can suggest getting a memory card that has a higher storage capacity like a 4-8GB card with a high write speed. I hope this helps!

Why are the games i purchese on the itunes card i bought being taken off my moms credit card that she used to open my account?

    Hi ausanyu,
As long you placed the gift card under his Apple ID, it should bill it according to the first article below. If that is not the case, then I would report the issue by following the steps in the second article.

  • Why doesn't Photoshop Elements 13 detect my camera or a card in a card reader?

I hooked my camera directly to my computer and tried to import my pictures. I kept getting the message no device detected. I bought a card reader because I read on Canon's forum that should work. Using the card reader, I still get the message that no device is detected.

Is that with it in the card reader?

  • Why is the DVD capacity for iDVD shown as 4.2Gb when my DVDs show a capacity of  4.7Gb?

I've recently discovered iDVD 7.1.2 and when trying to write out a file, the option for a single layer DVD is 4.2Gb, although my DVD's show a capacity of 4.7Gb.
    Why the discrepancy please?
(sorry if the question's been asked before, the ASCs are new to me)

iDVD doesn't care about size (no joke here).  It's only concerned with playing time.  iDVD will encode and compress the files to fit the DVD disk depending on the encoding method chosen. The following was taken from this Apple  document: iDVD '09 (7.x): About iDVD encoding settings
The encoding settings in iDVD are the following
◼ Best Performance (for projects less than 60 minutes in length).
When you select Best Performance, iDVD encodes your video in the background as you’re working on your project instead of waiting until you burn it. This can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to create a finished DVD. This is a good choice if your project is an hour or less in duration (for a single-layer disc).
Best Performance encodes your video at a preset bit rate that produces great quality for projects that can easily fit on your disc. If you have a larger project that needs to be squeezed onto a disc, you should select one of the other encoding options.
    ◼ High Quality
This is the best encoding option for larger projects that are between 1 and 2 hours long (for a single-layer disc). With this setting, iDVD chooses the best bit rate possible for the amount of data you need to fit onto your disc. It’s the only option that “squeezes” all the data onto a disc at a bit rate that ensures a high video quality in your burned DVD. Because iDVD does not encode in the background with this option, it takes longer to burn your disc. The encoding process begins when you burn the DVD instead of when you start working on your project.
    ◼ Professional Quality
The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about time.
So depending on the playing time of your project select the encoding method that will best suit it.
Note:  if there is a lot of fast motion in a video the Professional Quality will determine which portions of the video need the least amount of compression and which can stand the most in order to produce the best overall qualtiy possible.

Well, if you would rather have no operating system, then you could get your space back. But that would make the phone rather useless, wouldn't it.

  • Why does the organizer no longer recognize my camera when I try to download?

Why does Photoshop Elements Organizer no longer recognize my camera when I try to download?  Is there a new way to downolad?

Detective" for $30.  Is this something worth investing in or should we be
able to solve this ourselves?   My brain hurts.
No it is not worth investing in this because it is a very expensive way of getting viruses. These detectives and those who say they can find the fault on your machine by installing their software are bunch of hackers.
If your camera is not recognized then it suggests that either your USB is faulty or the cable linking the two is faulty.
Can you connect anything else like a flash drive to your USB port that you are using for your camera and is it recognized?

  • Why does the app store want me to give a credit card number to get a free app?

Hello; I've never used my apple account to purchase one thing, yet while I'm signed in to the app store, and I try to down load one of the free apps, I am asked to provide a credit card number. So my question is why must I give such info.? After all, I am not making a monetary purchase. Please explain, for I am confused. If one is required regardless, well , I guess I need to close my apple account, for I disagree with the practice.

I suppose you could think of it as establishing a formal account for general and future use.   What usually happens is that your card is tested by charging a nominal amount to it (which is refunded within a day or two).   Once that is established you will find a  'None'  option will appear when you want to download a free app which indicates no payment.
All purchases made will be recorded on your purchase list whether paid for or not.
There is also a system to purchase without a credit card.   See ...

  • Why does the USB port on a MacAir not register a card reader?

Hi, I am unable to get my Macair (2011) to pick up a card reader (with CF card) inserted in a USB slot.  Have tried all the Systems Preferences adjustments mentioned in previous posts.  Does anyone have any advice, please?  Thanks!

I bought a brand new MacBook Air to transfer my CF Cards via USB 3.0 but my Lexar reader does not mount! It looks like a lot of people are having this problem. My old MacBook Pro from 2008 mounts the reader and card fine. And the new MBA mounts other USB 1.0 and 2.0 devices properly. What's the point of USB 3.0 if it doesn't work with anything?
I visited the Apple Store and they told me to complain here in a forum, so here I am complaining. No one knows of a card reader that's USB 3.0 that works with the new MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro.

  • Movies taken with digital camera on sd cards

As a matter of organization should I keep these files with iphoto or move them to another location like where I keep my uploaded home movies that I take with a handicam?
Anytime I plug in my headcam which records on sd the mac thinks they are photo files and opens them with that rather than with imovie.
Any recomendations for where I store the files and which app (imovie vs iphoto) I use to view them??

iPhoto just organizes the movie files and uses Quicktime to play them. Most all video files on your HD will be opened by Quicktime. iMovie only imports QT files into its projects for editing and does play them. iMovie is an editor, not a player. So you can move those files into the Movie folder where other movie/video files are kept as they all will be played by Quicktime Player when double clicked on.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Why Won't This Digital Camera Movie Load Into iPhoto

I shot 186 photos and 12 movies with my Canon digital camera this past week while my wife and I were on vacation. The photos and 11 movies (all about one minute or less) loaded just fine but my longest one (3 minutes which is the maximum for my digital camera) will not load. Is there a maximum time limit for digital camera movies that I have exceeded with iPhoto?

    Hi David,
when you say "will not load" do you meant it won't open in Quicktime or it didn't download into iPhoto?
    This is what I do;
When iPhoto 5 first came out I really think it was programmed to import the smaller 30 sec video clips that cameras were taking at the time. Since then, digital cameras, at least my Canon S2 can take clips as large as your memory card can hold. The first time I tried to download my images and movie clips with my new camera, iPhoto stalled at the movie clips. I wasn't going to take any chances messing up my iPhoto Library so I started using Image Capture to download all my images and Movie clips. I actually like doing it this way a lot better. My movie clips are downloaded into my Movies folder where I then put them in a dated folder.
My photos are downloaded into my Pictures folder, where I then put them in a dated folder. I import the dated folder into iPhoto. I also keep all dated folders from photo downloads in the Pictures folder till I get enough Movie folders and Photo folders to fill a DVD. I burn them and then delete them from the hard drive.
This way I have the photos in iPhoto and I also have just the photos backed up to DVD.
The Movies I keep on the hard drive in their dated folders until I use all the clips for my iMovie projects for the Year. I then make sure they are all burned to DVD, then I delete those from my hard drive.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.
