Why is the Pen Tool automatically creating shapes for me?

Hello,
I appreciate your time in reading my question. I was just wondering why the Pen Tool on Adobe InDesign CS6 is creating shapes automatically for me. Which is not allowing em to finish what I was was wanting to create?
Here is a 15 second video of what I mean: IMG_0506.MOV - Google Drive
I would really appreciate any help you could give me. Have I pressed something wrong?
I look forward to hearing from you soon
Kind Regards
Daniel.

Hi Peter,
I never realized that. I am still a newbie when it comes to InDesign. I really do appreciate your help :-)
Enjoy the rest of your day
Kind Regards,
Daniel.

It removes the hairline on the face, when I add more anchor points. Why? And how do I correct it?

The ins and outs of the new and changed behaviors in the re-engineered pen tool have been disussed here on this forum and I'm sure a little detour to the help files will also shed some light on this...

How do I turn off the alt scroll zoom?
When I'm in Adobe photoshop and illustrator using the pen tool, alt is utilized for another short cut.  I would like to use the alt command for the pen tool instead of zooming into the screen.

I tend to select things from left to right and every time I am moving in a downward right diagonal motion during lasso selection I am missing a clear view and I am tending to have a more sloppy selection.  All this does is slow me down since I need to go back and hit those areas again.  The big arrowhead just get's in the way.  The original lasso tool with the thin line and small active point at it's lower left was far better for me.
I don't like turning the cursors to precise because I like to see the active tool icon where my cursor is and as the icon changes as I hold modifier keys down.  If I am forced to get comfortable with using pricise cursors I guess I will, but man, I've never had to do this in my 15 years of photoshop use...
I would absolutely LOVE to find a way to get the old lasso icon -- without the arrowhead above it.
Is there any chance this option could be inlcuded in cursor preferences?  I'd give much thanks, Adobe.

  • Using the Pen tool to create a shape with equal sides?

I am new to working with the Pen tool and started drawing a rounded button (I know I can easily do this with the rounded rectangle, I'm just practicing to learn the Pen), I draw the top horizontal line and start the curve going down the right side. How do I now continue drawing the lower curve so that it matches the one I already drew and replicate this on the other side? Is there an easy way to do this? Is there also a way for me to just copy this path and reuse it somehow?
    Thanks.

I think you'll find this tutorial useful.

  • Mysterious issues with the pen tool in flash (CS3 & CS4)

i have searched tirelessly for the answer to this problem and still have no answer. when using the pen tool to create shapes, occasionanally when i click to add the next point the line segment jumps over to a previously added point. also, sometimes when i add a point, the point mysteriously starts moving on the screen all by itself. i have used illustrator for many years and it's pen tool is perfect in so many ways and it is counterproductive to have to jump to illustrator to do any pen tool work and then import it into flash
anybody have this issue or know why this might be happening?

    Hello
I have the same issue. I think it is a bug.
Sometimes when I  delete points with <delete> key on keyboard, flash also deletes randomly frames on locked layers with all of its contents.
You have to start tricking over these issues, if you do not want to be nervous. Like using a one key -shortcut substitute of Ctrl+Z
Sometimes it's happening, because there are not perfectly overlapping shapes on each other on one layer, .
Sometimes because there are a parenting issue, flash sometimes breaks, if you draw to deep under the "root" of the
    project.
Or if you have a lot of vectrice on one layer. But I am just guessing too.

  • Why is Illustrator filling the areas between the paths created by the pen tool?

First, I am very much a beginner with Illustrator (but have used other vector drawing programs) and always try to find the answer in the 531-page manual before bothering the community.  So my apologies for what is probably a beginner's mistake.
I am marking up a drawing I imported from a raster file and and have ran Image Trace.  I am trying to draw 2 perpendicular lines with the pen tool.  However, when I complete the second line, it immediately files the space between the two lines with a black triangle.  When I draw a square, same result - instead of a square formed by 4 lines with blank space in the middle, it fills the space with black.
Why would it do this?  Is there some setting that I need to turn off?  In the past, a pen line just drew a path and didn't create fills.
I am using Illustrator CC on Windows 8.1 (Surface Pro 2) if that's relevant to anything.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Buzz,
If i'm understanding correctly it sounds as though you have your colour applied to the fill instead of the stroke. All you have to do whilst having your shape selected or before you draw it is hit the arrow to the top right of that panel for it to switch to the stroke. Then click the white box with the red line through it for no fill in the areas you want no colour.
    I hope that helps!

  • Creating a bell-shapped (Gaussian) curve with the Pen Tool

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to create a bell-shaped (Gaussian) curve in Photoshop CS3, using the Pen Tool, however apparently I am not good enough with it... I can create a curve that resembles a simple parabola - like this one http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BhBX8ycVeL4/SIHhJYmDCgI/AAAAAAAAA-g/2Dc_Tf1Kz5c/s400/400px-Para bola.svg.png only upside-down; however I can't figure out how to further go from here in order to add the extra inflexions on the sides that make the parabola into a Gaussian curve, that would look something like this: http://naturalcureinsomnia.com/img/Bell-Curve.gif
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

    Art,
Correct me if I'm wrong---I believe you want a schematic Gaussian curve rather than a mathematically precise one.
If so, set up two horizontal guide lines, one running through the desired apex and the other through the curve's baseline. Add three vertical guides, one through the apex and the other two equally spaced on the left and right sides of the guide through the apex.
Let point A be at the intersection of the left vertical with the baseline, point B be the apex, and point C be the intersection of the right vertical with the baseline.
With the pen tool at point A, drag horizontally to the right a fraction of the distance to the central guide. Release the mouse, move the pen tool to point B and drag horizontally to the right about the same distance or until the left half of the curve looks Gaussian. Release the mouse, place the pen tool at point C and drag horizontally rightward until the right half of the Gaussian curve matches the left.
To close the curve, release the mouse and click at a point on the baseline well beyond point C, connect from below with a path of any shape to a point on the baseline well to the left of point A, and then close to point A. Stroke the path, delete the path, and erase all but the Gaussian part.
Experiment with the ABC positions and the drag lengths until you get a decent curve. Should you want a precise curve it would be better to use one of the freeware curve programs out there. But if you want a bit of precision with the pen tool, that's possible by calculating one or two intermediate points between A and B and symmetrically between B and C and then dragging the pen so that curve comes reasonably close to passing through them.

  • PLEASE tell me there is a way to apply automatic strokes using the Pen Tool.

To apply pencil and brush strokes using the Pen Tool (in Photoshop CC - the version I'm using), I would constantly have to right-click on my path, and on the dialog menu that pops up, select "Stroke Path...," then select which "Tool" (I namely use the Pencil and Brush tools), then hit "OK." And that gets ANNOYING. This is Photoshop CC - which means there should be a way for the Pen Tool to automatically apply the (Pencil/Brush) strokes while I'm creating paths. Illustrator does that - so there should be a way for Photoshop to do that as well. It's a software a majority of artists use; there SHOULD be a way to automatically apply pen strokes. PLEASE tell me there is.

You can do a shape rather than a plain path, and apply a stroke there. But, just plain vanilla; no fancy brush tips or scatter or anything like that.

  • The lines I create with the pen tool are not showing up in After Effects.

I'm working on a project where I need straight lines. I've added the lines using the pen tool on solid layers, but they are not showing up before or after rendering. I can see where they are supposed to be when I isolate the layer they are on. I have the lines at one pixel, solid white and the layers are on top of everything else. I took a screen shot. Can anyone help me?

Well, I am still not 100% sure why the pen tool lines/masks are not showing up but I was able to work around it. I already had the stroke effect applied and set to all masks. Looking into this though, it seemed that they were only not showing up on the new solid layers I had created. I duplicated the layers the masks were  working on instead and it seems to resolve the problem for now. Thanks for your help!

  • Photoshop CC - Cannot control + click to select a different shape while using the pen tool?

I used the pen tool constantly in photoshop cs6 and would often use control + left click to select a different shape while still using the pen tool.
I'm now forced to switch to the move tool to select another layer? Why was this feature removed / changed?
Fix: After fooling around more, here is how I fixed it:
The new Direct Select Tool by default is set to "active" layers. Switch it to "all layers"

A new problem = Selecting multiple points with control + click + drag is selecting ALL shape layers... Jesus christ, why was this changed????
I now have to double click the shape I want to select? Why? What is the point of this?

  • Problem with the pen tool creating a fill when I only want stroke

    Hi,
I'm having an issue. I am creating a simple spider for a project. Initally I used the pen tool to make legs. It worked for a bit then all the sudden started filling in an area I didn't even draw with color. I'm not sure what I did to cause this to happen. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

That shape shows a Yellow fill, probably from the last shape you drew.  If you select the shape and deselect the fill, then your drawing will go back to Black strokes only.

  • Why do arrow heads change ends when using the pen tool?

    1. I create a horizontal line
    2. I change it to a right ended arrow head selected from my own graphic styles
    3. I then want to extend the left side ( non arrow end) with the pen tool
    4. I click the non arrow end to extend the line in a vertical direction
    5. The atrrow head changes to the other end
    Why?

Illustrator's arrowheads don't know right from left, they only know start from finish. Each open path in Illustrator has a beginning and an end. When you use the pen to extend a path you make the end you work from the end, even if it was once the beginning. Deselect the path, then click on the other end with the pen tool to restore the path direction.
If all you are doing is making the path longer I'd would be better to just move the end point.

  • What happened to the 'Shape Mode' shortcut keys on the Pen Tool?

For the longest time I've used both the Shape and Pen Tools for drawing vectors in Photoshop, but with CS6 I noticed a lot of weird behaviours. The one that is really getting to me is the lack of 'Shape Mode' shortcut keys when using the Pen Tool. When on the 'Shape Tool', fo example Cirle or Rectange, you can press the Shift to change the Shape Mode to 'Add', Alt to change it to 'Subtract' or both together to get 'Intersect'. This functionality used to exist on the Pen Tool too, but in CS6 I can't seem to get it working.
A collegue suggested to move over to Illustrator for all my Vector needs, and I know that this a good advice. However the lack of quick/integrated changing between 'Shape Modes' in either product (now) makes drawing things alot slower (for me).
Am I missing something, or is this feature now ommited in Photoshop CS6. If it is does anyone know if its possible to script something to allow this kind of behviour in Photoshop or Illustrator?
    cheers,
    Jon

The modifier keys "Alt|Opt", "Ctrl|Cmd" and "Shift" work differently depending on the tool being used but the individual keys seem to provide somewhat related functions.
For example the "Shift" key tends to be a constraining key Rectangle tools are constrained to square ellipse tools to Circles. However if there is an Active selection when you hold down the skey when you drag out a new selection it does not reset the current selection instead the new selection is not constrained and is added to the current selection. Shift constrains Transform tool to current aspect ratio,  Shift constrains Line tools to vertical, horizontal or 45 degree angles. Pen tool like line tool shift constrains the angle.
The "Alt|Opt" key changes the way tools operate. Transforms are from the center not from the side or corner being dragged.  Selection tools like the rectangle and ellipse will cause the intal drag out be from the center however it there is a Active selection dragging out a new selection will be subtracted from the current selection. This key changes the Pen tool from draw mode to anchor point adjusting.
The "Shift" and "Alt|Opt" modifier keys can be used together to have an operation be both constrain and from the center.
The "Ctrl|Cmd" key seems to change the way a tool works on a control anchor point.  The Pen Tool changes from Pen Draw mode to Direct Selection tool to facilitate moving the point.  Transform can be distorted a single corner point can be moved and distort the rectangle bounding box.
These keys may have other functions I don't know about.  Photoshop has many features so many I don't know if any one person know and uses all of them. For the rest of us they seem to be Photoshop hidden secrets.
