Why is the playback sound so loud.

Using PRE8.  Although the sound recordings are nominal, no higher than 0db, I always get extremely loud playbacks on my DVD.  It's blasting and I have to way lower the volume before starting.  Why is that happening and how can I correct?

You know, I find most commercial DVD's to be about +3dB higher, than for my other input settings. I always have to turn the volume down...
When editing my Audio, I always do so with headphones, and carefully monitor the output Audio. I do this by ear, and only glance at the Levels Meters. In general, my Master is probably most often set to -3dB, and for Menus, and for my surround channels, I am usually ~ -6dB, but this all depends on the Levels of my source material. It is not uncommon to have a Track at -18dB, especially if it's used in a Menu, or is in my surround channels.
I'd almost always rather turn UP the home theater's volume, than have to run to turn it down, as the house is blown off its foundation.
What I absolutely hate is the commercial DVD, where the Center channel is way down, but the SFX in the LFE channel is up by about +12dB. I almost blew out my walls on Fight Club, with the airplane crash scene. Just totally painful. SFX pieces do not need to be THAT loud. Just a pet peeve of mine.
I also find that too many burned DVD's (by others) have the Menu Audio much, much too high, as do some commercial DVD's. That Audio should be nothing more than "background" music.
Good luck,
Hunt

Why do the Iphone sounds mute when voice recording?

Thanks for the response!  I use Display Record with various sound/video themes and would like to include them in my presentations.  For what it's worth, I will make a suggestion to Apple, to make the muting of sounds, during recording a user preference/setting.

First is your volume turned up and not muted?
Also check system preferences/sound/sound effects, make sure play sound effects thru internal speakers is checked, make sure alert volume is turned up (not all the way down), Play user sound effects id checked.

  • Why is the playback different from the preview?

It's display on the same monitor, but clearly the playback looks so much different than the export preview
I also tried taking a snapshot and it doesn't look like the one displayed on the project monitor.

  • Why does the hdmi sound out stop working once I start using eyetv?

I upgraded to Lion and now I have a few problems. I use the Elgato EyeTV to record television on my Mac Mini. I have been using it for a few years. Now once I watch something on my EyeTV the hdmi sound output stops working and I have to reboot to be able to hear audio from iTunes or anything other then EyeTV. Why is this happening and when will there be an update to fix it?

There were numerous audio issues with OSX 10.6.8 that
were carried over into Lion and not resolved.  Issues
with EyeTV was just one of them.  May want to check
the Snow Leopard forum for workarounds, if any for your case.

  • Why is the playback in Final Cut Express 4 delayed by 30 seconds?

I am finding editing with Final Cut Express 4 has gotten slow and frustrating.  This is a new problem.  I have used this software for two years with no problems until now. I'll start out editing a project normally for about an hour.  Then the playback function starts to lag.  After I render a clip and try to play back what I've done by hitting the space bar, I have to look at the spinning color wheel for 30 seconds before my video will play.  I have no other programs open, I have 10 GB of RAM.  I upgraded my OS from Leopard to Snow Leopard a few months ago.  All my Apple Software is updated.  FCX has also been crashing and locking up.  Is there a preferred way to save my project for more efficient editing?  I also tried starting a new project with only a five minute audio mp3 clip and a 10 sec slug for video.  I get the same playback delay with this project.  In this case I only saved the project not "save all".

    Hi Robert,
I've never unistalled and reinstalled an OS so it's a little scary for me.
I suggested uninstalling/reinstalling Final Cut Express, not the OS!
When I click on the FCE icon on my task bar to open it, which version is being opened?
Probably the one on your 1TB drive, but to be sure, you can always just open your /Applications folder on the 1TB drive and double-click the FCE application to start FCE.
Could there be a problem with a duplication of applications such as FCE on these two drives?
Highly unlikely.  The system looks for applications in the /Applications folder on your startup drive, which is now your 1TB drive.
My video is 4:3 so I chose 640x480 to prevent stretching of the image.
No, you need to choose 720x480 (DV-NTSC) frame size. This is the standard 4:3 DV frame size.  640x480 is a computer monitor resolution.  720x480 is the actual, standard def, DV (television) frame size.  It is 4:3.   The 720 line height includes something called "overscan" which you never actually see.  The image you see will be 4:3.   FCE is not designed for 640x480 frame size ... do you have to render these clips after you put them in your DV-NTSC sequence?
Then after about an hour of editing, the playback delays started up again.
Well, that's bizarre, I must admit.  Kinda has me stumped, except for the possibility that FCE may need to be uninstalled/reinstalled.

  • Why wont the lock sound play when i lock my phone

my phone wont play the lock sound when i lock my phone and the volume is up all the way and the switch is up.

Are Lock Sounds activated in Settings>Sounds?

  • Why does the ringtone sound worse AFTER I download it?

    Hi guys,
I'm having an odd issue. I just bought three ringtones direct on my iPhone 4S from the iTunes 'Tones' section, and when I set them as ringtones and preview them on the phone they sound really crappy. When I previewed them in the 'Tones' section and streamed them the sound was full and clear. Any ideas?
    Much appreciated,
    Sacha

I have exactly the same problem, the best way of describing the problem is that the ringtones sound very tinny, possibly distorted like they've completely lost the bass and much of the lower midrange.
Like Sacha I've purchased 2 ring tones from the iTunes store within my iPhone 4S (Nicki Minay - Super Bass, and The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra - Star Trek the Motion Picture), within the store they sound great but as soon as their assigned to ring tones they sound awful.  At first I assumed that the downloads must have been poorly compressed or something but I've since confirmed they play great on my PC.
I've also noticed something even more odd, if I use the ringtone as a text message tone on the iPhone one of them sounds great as it should but the other ones won't even play, very strange!  I've had a look at the tones on my PC and both are 30 seconds long, and both are compressed to 256kbps at 44.1khz so no obvious differences.  I've recompressed them to alternative bit rates but nothing seems to make a difference to the sound quality as a ring tone.
I've since tried both ringtones on my Wifes iPhone 4 and her's exhibits the same problems so not a handset or iPhone 4s specific issue.  It sounds to me like a software bug in iOS5?

  • Why does the audiobook sound like its in an echo chamber?

I've been downloading books from Overdrive Media successfully but now when I do it, the audio sounds as if its in an echo booth. They are WMA audiobooks that I download and then transfer to itunes as recommended. What is happening?

CHeck the Equalizer in the upper Window Menu if its set wrong.

  • Why is the startup chime so loud on my iMac?

I just bought it yesterday from the Apple store, so it's brand new.
I find that the volume control does not influence the startup chime.
I've looked on-line for solutions, it seems others have this same problem. I've tried "zapping the PRAM" to no success.
Keeping an audio plug installed in the headphone jack does not disable the internal speakers from booming the startup chime.
Does anyone have a solution to this please? It seems silly that such an expensive computer should have such an uncorrected problem.
    Thank you,
    geo

Well, my volume control certainly does influence the start up chime and I cannot see why yours shouldn't.   Use keyboard buttons F11 and F12 to adjust your sound level last thing at night and if your machine auto starts in the morning it will not wake the household.
True, if volume control is turned down to a lower level, you would have to adjust it for other sound output that you do want later, iTunes and videos on browsers etc, but it requires little effort.

  • Why is the GB sound quality so tinny?

I tried to mix a number of songs using GB (just learning the ropes...) and played back the recording...it sounds as if the recording went through speakers and was recorded by the computer's interenal microphone - it sounds tinny and there's background noise from the room...how do I keep everything 'internalised' ? Why can't the recordings have the same quality of sound that the originals do (which I have carried over from iTunes)?

how did you get these recordings into GB?

  • Why has the startup sound gone from my MacBook?

  • HELP! Why is the music sounding distorted

Hi there, so i put on all music on the ipod, and two days later it is sounding all distorted and garbled, do i have to take it all off and start again? This ipod nano sure has its imperfections...thanx

    The equalizer might be on.
On the nano, even if the equalizer is set to off in the iPod settings, the equalizer setting in iTunes is used. If you have a track in iTunes with a custom EQ set to, say, "rock" the iPod will use rock. It may sound fine though the computer speakers but not so good though the earbuds.
Not all iPods are consistent about how they use the per track EQ settings from iTunes. On a 5G iPod, for example, setting the EQ on the iPod to off means it plays everything flat.
You could try setting the EQ on the iPod nano to "flat" while the song in question is playing. If that clears it up you should set that song to use a flat EQ in iTunes. Then it will always play like that on the nano.
Most modern music doesn't need equalization and adding it usually makes music sound distorted and garbled.

  • Supervisor Record Viewer playback sound poor

    HI,
We use Cisco Contact center. We record all our incoming calls. In the Cisco Supervisor Desktop, the Supervisor Record Viewer is used to playback the recorded files. When you playback these recorded files from within this supervisor record viewer, the sound is very poor and cracky. Sounds like pstn lines over the atlantic back in 1955. However when I look up the files that are saved on the contact center server and I convert them to wav, the sound is ok. So the recording is done correct. Why when I playback from within the tool is the playback sound so poor?
I use Cisco Unified Contact Center Express 7.0 Cisco Supervisor DEsktop 6.6.(1)(Premium Version)
    Thanks & regards,

The problem was solved by doing an update.
The Build I used was 6.6.1.053 I believe. After the update it was 6.6.1.400, which solved the problem with the playback sound.

  • Headphone sound too loud - how to get very fine volume control in osx

I could not use my headphones on my new MBP, because the sound was always too loud, even on the smallest setting. It appears that lots of other people have similar problems, so here is a way to fix this:
To get very fine sound volume control I use soundflower fromhttp://code.google.com/p/soundflower/. You have to restart after installing it. Then go to preferences/sound/output and choose soundflower(2ch). Start soundflower from the applications folder, click on the flower symbol in the top pannel and soundflower(2ch) built in output. Then go to Audio setup and change the master for soundflower(2ch). This way you can get the global sound less loud or you can amplify it.
Hope this helps a few people

    You saved my life (and my ears) ! Thank you marcel-sl for sharing this (;
    Prety cool software if you have an USB headset too loud. Now, I can use F11 and F12 (;
