Why is the revolving circle in system tray

Everytime I try to go to the system tray with the cursor, there is a revolving circle near the date and time.
Any advice welcome.

Is it the mouse pointer that changes and doesn't change back? In that case I would suspect an add-on, maybe one related to form filling??
Or is it like a display glitch which is superimposed over whatever's behind it? If it's the latter, could you try disabling graphics hardware acceleration? Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

I am not aware of a heart, square, circle or lasso shape i=for editing in iphoto for the Mac - Maybe you are thinking of iPhoto for IOS which has been discontinued and is not available under IOS 8

Why does the loading circle come up in the blue screen when I shut down sometimes?

Sometimes when I shut down I get the usual blue screen, then the loading circle appears and the macbook doesn't shut down. I have to hold down the power button to shut it off, which I know is not a good thing. Can someone help me please???

Usually the "Circle" represents the Mac 'Finishing Business...' before Shutting Down...

Why is the padlock missing from System Preferences, App Store?

I noticed that System Preferences, App Store no longer shows a padlock at the lower left hand corner, yet other System Preference windows show the padlock. Why is that? Is there a way to restore the padlock? I have already tried "repairing" my install and the padlock did not come back. Thank you.

This will answer everyone of y'all, why some have it and why some don't.
System Preferences---> Security & Privacy---> (unlock the PadLock)---> Advance---> checkmark the "Require an administrator password to access system-wide preferences."
Before I checked that, I had the same set up as FoxFifth. Where App Store, Time Machine and others did not have the PadLock. However, after checking it. The App Store and Time Machine did have a PadLock.

Why doesn't iTunes appear in system tray???

I never had this problem before installing iTunes 5.0 (at least not with iTunes, I did have the same problem with a lesser known program called Music Editor), I double click on it and nothing. The only place anything appears is in the Processes menu in Ctrl-Alt-Del, where it lists all the programs it is running, it just has iTunes.exe. Besides that, nothing. Can't end the task under Ctrl-Alt-Del, it just stays there, Can't try again, nothing happens. Can somebody please help me and explain why this happens and how to fix it? Btw, I have since got rid of 5.0 & quicktime 7 and bonjour, reinstalled 4.9 and quicktime 6, but the exact same thing happens.

how in the world would i do that? it comes standard on the hard drive and i don't want to reset it to factory settings (although it does have that). I have tried system restore (it takes you back to a previous point when things worked correctly) but it keeps saying it can't go back because nothing is different. arrgh. frustrating. can i put on windows xp again without resetting everything? and how so? ty

Why is the quit function of system applications (utilities) different?

For example the Network Utility (and/or Disk Utility) quits if I click the window close button. I don't have to make a Quit by keyboard shortcut or from the Menuebar. But if I open the Activity Monitor (and/or Console, Terminal, ColorSync Utility...), I do have to quit by cmd + q or the Menuebar entry!?
I don't understand this different behaviour and the sense behind. For me it's simply not unique.

If all the activity in a given application can only take place in a single window, closing that window will quit the application.

But would it not give me an error message if it was something like that? First thing I did was to try another port but the result was the same.
Also, my itunes shows my ipod as connected and the entire contents are visible there and accurate. Could it still do that with a faulty cable?

How to minimize window into the system tray icon

I tried to fin how to minimize the application main window into the right down corner (system tray bar) only as an icon cause I don't want to have it on main bar.

I've already done that, some years ago.
Sorry, but I cannot give you the code, cause it has vanished after a few (!!!) system re-installations ;)
But this was the main idea:
- make a jni-dll
- inside the dll, get the handle to the window you want to minimize
- alter that window's properties
It's rather easy, once you've avoided all pitfalls. I'll suggest http://www.codeproject.com , they've certainly some tutorials on minimizing to the system tray.

Icons in system tray

on a non wired desktop pc, windows xp. sp2, I want to clean out the system tray of unneeded icon(programs)running there.
I have:
Linksys Router BEFW1154
adapter WUSB11Ver2.6
cable modem BEFCMU10 v.3
In the non wired computers system tray there are 2 icons together, shaped like a computer monitor, and then another one shaped like a monitor, off by itself. These are Linksys icons.
Question?? Is it necessary to have these in the system tray? I have never actually used them so far as I know. Are they needed in the system tray in order for the wireless connection to operate properly?
I phoned Linksys tech support but they won't answer this question because my warranty has expired. Everything works fine even though I bought the router and adapeter about 5 years ago. Thanks for your advice.

For the modem and router, you don't need any icons. Not sure about the adapter's icon. You may be using that for the connection.
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

Dynamic system tray icon tooltips?

In AIR, can the system tray icon tooltip be dynamically
generated?
I want to dynamically display some data whenever the user
hovers over system tray icon, but it doesn't appear I can do that
with air.NativeApplication.nativeApplication.icon.tooltip ?
for example, I tried to dynamically return the current
date/time but it didn't work:

My other thought was to create my own custom "toolip" using
NativeWindow when a user hovers over the systray (but would like to

I don't believe this is possible. A better strategy may be to
change the tooltip when the state of your application changes such
that the text should be updated (rather than in response to a user
event). However, I don't think the tooltip display will change
while it is already open.
Using a native window wouldn't work in this scenario, either.
The difficulty is still detecting when the mouse is hovering over
the icon. It is also not possible to definitely locate the icon on
the desktop, although you can guess using the usableBounds property
of the Screen class.

Can't delete email messages - get dreaded multicolor revolving circle and have to force quit

Since installing Lion, there are two messages in my Mail inbox that I cannot read or delete. Whenever I try by putting the cursor on either one of them, I get the multicolor revolving circle symbol. I then can't access anything in Mail or stop the revolving circle. I have to go to Force Quit to end the Mail application and start over. Then must be very careful not to highlight one of those messages or the same thing happens over and over again. I suspect these two are some kind of spam or virus mail because I don't recognize the sender or the bit of the message that shows up in the inbox.
Please help - this is quite annoying. I will be most appreciative of any ideas.

Hold the phone. This, apparently, may be a Bell Sympatico server issue after all. I've tried to get in contact with their support people and the message says that they've been having problems. Also, my wife, who only uses .mac mail recieved the same email (that keeps popping up in my inbox) and has had no issues. I retrieved my mail using my newer imac as well and the same problem occured there. Hence, it is probably not an app issue, but a server issue.

Wmii, or other tiling wm, with a system tray

I really like the way wmii does tiling (minimal but functional window decorations, and the columnar layout), but I have recently sorely felt the lack of a system tray. I installed trayer and it works fine, I like it in the abstract, but it has some obvious problems with wmii. For one thing, it doesn't stick around when switching tags, and for another, it doesn't play well with wmii's own status bar or with tiled windows.
So, is there anyone else who has tried this, and what was your solution? Is there another tray that behaves, or another tiling window manager that plays nice? I have heard that it's possible to add a margin where tiled windows will not be placed, but only in passing and no details specific to wmii.
My ideal desktop would be more or less exactly like wmii's default setup, with a few extra keybindings, etc. and a system tray in the bar. While I'm willing to accept the fact that nothing like this yet exists, I'm sure it could be closely emulated (perhaps with a separate panel). In the meantime I'm using awesome, but I don't like any of the default window layouts or the lack of decorations on the windows (the list in the bar doesn't cut it).
I'd like to hear any suggestions the Arch community has to offer, whether for configs or window managers (or both).
