Why is the startup volume invisible when booting MBP from Snow leopard disk?
I loaded Snow Leopard onto a new harddrive. It boots and operates my MBP (April 2009) just fine but the drive icon does not show on the desktop. What gives?
Hard drives don't show up automatically in Desktop, so you have to turn it on. Go to Finder menu > Preferences > General, and tick "Hard disks", so your hard disk will appear in the Desktop. You can do the same with external disks, DVDs, iPods, etc.

I borrowed the image below for an HDR workshop I ran at the 2010 PSNZ National Convention, to demonstrate a method of removing halos. You'll remember that halos were a serious problem with early HDR, and while the halos in this image were caused by over sharpening, they are perfect for demonstrating this technique.
It relies on the fact that halos so often tend to put a lighter tone between the two areas where sharpening is being applied. Whether that is the sky abutting a dark line of hills, or the rock and little tower as in this image. I've uploaded it at the size it was supplied to me at (about 2700 pixels wide). So
Click to open the full image, right click and copy, and paste into Photoshop.
Select the clone tool, and set its blend mode to Darken.
Try to sample on a line horizontal to where you want to clone, to give the best tonal match, and start cloning.
Because the sky is darker than the halo, it overwrites it. But the rock is darker than the sky, so it has no affect.
It works even better if you clone on a new layer also set to Darken. No masking, just Photoshop blend mode magic.
You can also fix the little tower. Use a great big brush — just remember to sample horizontal to match the horizon.
Back then I was using the same trick with CAs after forgetting to fix them in ACR, and having done too much work to start again after spotting the problem. -
When I updated from Snow Leopard to Lion, a new username w/administrative powers was created. Trying to merge old w/ new and retain all photos, music, etc of each but can't figure it out. Any ideas on how to do so?
I ended up calling Apple Tech Support for help on this. Got directed to a Mail expert. He had me move the following files from my home Library file folder.
~\Library\Mail\V2\MailData\Envelope Index
~\Library\Mail\V2\MailData\Envelope Index-shm
~\Library\Mail\V2\MailData\Envelope Index-wal
Then he asked me to quit Mail and then restart it again. When it restarted, it imported the mail (which the original migration had not done before). This solved about 90% of the problems. In my old mail folder in Snow Leopard, I had a Mail folder called Archive. Since this is now a reserved folder name, the import to Mountain Lion choked and it created five duplicates of this folder and its subfolders. I just deleted these and then went to Time Machine and brought in a single copy. The Rules and Smart Folders I had were gone and couldn't be resurrected, so had to spend some time and rebuild them by hand. But, now it all seems to be working well. -

Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) is what I have, 10.8 Mountain Lion is what I'm asking about. To be even more clear, I'm a graphic designer, I have dozens for programs that if I have to reintall, I'll need to close my business for at least two days.

I perform music with my Macbook pro. so I have several music applications that startup automatically when the computer boots. they look for the audio interface that they are supposed to talk to and then everything is good. but sometimes I boot my computer when it is not connected to the audio interface and this breaks the conncetion link between the music applications and the audio interface. If the is a way to bypass (turn off) the startup items as I boot the computer when it is not connected to the audio interface, then I'd no longer have this problem. is there a way to do so?

This is a third party software problem you need to contact the developer to fix, perhaps they already have a update and you need to apply it.
Nothing should "break" if it's not connected to hardware as with portables people are always connecting and disconnecting.
If it's breaking the connection between two other pieces of software then it's poorly designed.
Some hardware + software combinations are meant for pernament desktop installations as a integrated system, not for portables.
The only case I can think of that software won't work without the hardware attached if the hardware is a form of content protection, that it won't run without the dongle etc., attached. -
Can't Install Boot Camp from Snow Leopard DVD in Windows 7
I have an iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-inc (08) running 10.6.2 and Windows 7.
I was able to successfully use the Boot Camp Assistant to partition and install Windows 7 on my iMac. After the installation, I was able to download updates from Windows Updates which included video drivers.
However, when I inserted my Snow Leopard DVD to install Boot Camp 3.0, the Setup.exe only gave me two options: To Install Mac OS X remotely and to install CD/DVD Sharing. I was not presented any options to install Boot Camp.
I did manually navigate the Snow Leopard DVD and found a Boot Camp directory with its own setup.exe and when I clicked on it, it gave me an Installation Error stating "Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model". I did some research and I found no mention of my iMac listed as an unsupported model.
Any help would be appreciated.When I inserted Snow Leopard DVD, the autorun didn't show me an option to install Boot Camp Drivers. Just like the author of this topic, it only showed me 2 options: to Install Mac OS X remotely and to install CD/DVD Sharing.
Then, I've run Windows Explorer, navigated to Snow Leopard DVD, opened Boot Camp folder and runned "setup.exe". The installer opened and Boot Camp 3.0 was installed successfully.
I don't know if it could help you guys with that error message, but after the installation of Windows 7 64bits, I've rebooted my Macbook Pro. Only after the reboot I did the Boot Camp Drivers installation.
You can also try to run the "setup.exe" as Administrator (right-click, Run as administrator).
Also, my Snow Leopard DVD is that grey one with the white "Mac OS X Install DVD" labelled on it. -
Why is the file so large when I record from the microphone?
I am trying to write a program that will save incoming and outgoing voicestreams while playing them. I have been successful thus far but when I record the voice from the speaker(microphone) the file size is in the Megabyte size within a few seconds of recording! The incoming stream is more acceptable in size. I checked the files the incoming stream is 128kbps while the microphone recording is 1411kbps. I tried setting the restriction on the devicelist but that didnt work.. any ideas?
I am trying to record the outgoing voice stream when i speak into microphone to another person. I used mostly the AVTransmit 2 code to do that. The thing is i get "no processor exception" when I try to clone the data that i get from processor.getOutput. But if i were to clone the dataSource that is directly from the microphone before being processed then it works but with a much larger file size at 1120kbps. The thing is I am processing the cloneableDataSource so i am not sure what went wrong

Can't connect to LAN when booting MBP from external drive?
In an effort to always work in my computer environment, I backup my Mac Pro main drive to an external firewire drive, plug in to my new Macbook Pro 2.9 and option start off this drive. Result is I'm working off the last backup of my main Mac Pro drive so all my apps, stored mail, etc, is alive and well. I merely track any changes and new files and copy them over or use DropBox to get them on to my Main Mac Pro, my main computer.
Problem is, when booting off my external drive running Lion 10.7.5, my MBP's network won't turn on or recognize my home LAN. Then if I restart off just the MBP drive, it does connet to my LAN automatically.
Could the problem be that since my MBP was set up for Mount Lion, that it won't fully work with a drive with a Lion OS on it? I thought perhaps I had to turn on Airport when on my external Lion drive, since I don't have that turned on on my Mac Pro which uses ethernet. Can't figure this one out. The MBP must have airport as I'm on it now but booted off the internal ML OSX drive.

StevenNo not at all. You should have access to your LAN from any version of OS X that is set up correctly. It's still using the same hardware and should be loading the same drivers for that hardware and YES you may have to actually turn on the Airport card.

Mail didn't migrate when I went from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion
Just got a new MacBook Pro with Retina. It came with Lion on it, I upgraded it to Mountain Lion. Then, I used Migration Assistant to bring over everything from my Time Machine. My old MacBook Pro was running Snow Leopard.
The big glitch seems to be Mail. The mailboxes and folders are in the user/Library folder, but when I open up Mail, it shows I have about 400 emails instead of 50,000+. And, none of the Rules, Smart Mailboxes, etc. are there.
Would migrating to Lion first and then upgrading solve this? Is this a known problem with ugrading from SL to ML? Should I just move the Mail folders in place and try again (I've done this before and am comfortable with the command line)?
I'm sure there are clever ways of rebuilding it all by hand, but I'd love to avoid that.

Preface: I have no experience with Quicken Essentials, but have read, quite often, on this and other forums that it is a further strip down of features from Quicken 2007. So I agree, get Quicken 2007 for Lion/Mt. Lion, but...
BE CAREFUL with Quicken!
When Intuit finally released Quicken 2007 for Lion v16.1.1 in March, 2013 it was a godsend for older Quicken PPC users. It will directly open the data file from Quicken 2005, 2006 or 2007 PPC versions. The upgrade to 16.1.2 with the release of Mountain Lion was also stable.
I found version 16.1.3 to crash on opening on my Lion Mac, so I downgraded back to version 16.1.2 and all is well. Others are now reporting that version 16.1.4, the current version sold by Intuit, is also causing some problems. I have not been able to isolate these reports.
My point: purchase Quicken 2007 for Lion, but ALSO:
1. Make copies of your Quicken 2007 PPC data file and back them up BEFORE you attempt to open it in 16.1.4; and
2. If you run into problems, let me know by email (michaellax) at AOL dot com.
If it works fine for you, please report that too!
PS: Baltwo will tell you he has encountered no problems and good for him. But the reports of others with problems keep mounting... -
I upgraded the operating system on my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion via the web. Now I need to erase the hard drive and restore it to factory settings, so that I can pass it on. How do I accomplish this? When I insert the Mac OS X install disk, the only option is to erase the free space. Any insight would be appreciated.

Once you are running off of the DVD you will be able to do a clean install of SL
To boot off the DVD with the system up running Lion insert the DVD. Open Sytem Preferences->Startup Disk and select the DVD then restart the machine.

Upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks: Volume cannot be used as a start volume
Hi there!
I'm having a triple boot Mac-Linux-Win on a 2010 iMac. Each is on a partition. From Snow Leopard, I'm trying to install OS X Mavericks via App Store. The install Mavericks button has been added to my dock after the download completed.
However, when choosing a target volume, it says that my current Mac volume may not be used as a start volume. File system is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I'm having 168 GB free space on it. Partition table is GUID.
What's wrong?

KalsanYou are never going to have the option to repair a disk if you are booted from the same disk.
I think the place to start is boot off your Snow Leopard DVD install disk by holding down the C key on boot up.
Under Utilities drop down menu you will have access to Disk Utility.
From here you will have the option to repair Disk (ie not grayed out.)
option: Either insert and wait for the Mac OS X Install DVD window and double-click the Install icon; or power down, then start up while holding down the "C" key. Either way, that takes a few minutes. -

My late 2009 27" iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up. It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple logo again. This could possibly be an HD failure, but then why does Safe Mode still work and the USB install not work? 1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Why is my startup volume is a network dev. which connects to my HD?
I have OS X 10.4.5. When I login to OS X my startup volume is shown as a network device. This is the upper right ICON which has a globe icon with the words network but no downward pointing arrow on it. I believe this should be a HD icon. The system works correctly and I see on my desk top the files for my hard disk. I am having a problem with Finale from codamusic. I do not believe that the problem is in Finale as I have two G4 desktop computer same OS side by side. The other computer shows an HD icon as the startup volume and does not have the problem. I believe that input from the KB is different for each computer and would account for the Finale problem. Perhaps the one with the network icon the characters go through a loopback driver? Both have the same version of Finale and the other computer's Finale works where mine does not. I am also seeing character dropouts from the KB particularly when starting programs.

Power PC G4 500Mh Mac OS X (10.4.5)My apologies - it was very early in the morning when I posted my question, I should have recounted all of what I tried. I have tried all of the easy fixes such as resetting my startup system using the startup disk preference panel. When I do reset the startup I get the same exact problem. It does not change my startup volume and it still uses a network volume pointed to my harddisk! When I use the startup disk preference panel it states the system I am trying to reboot to is on my HD not on a network volume, but it still comes up on a network volume. Also my HD icon is on my desktop at the lower right.
The network icon at the upper left is not movable, the HD is. If I try to move the network icon I simply get a clone of the icon.
I've also reset parameter ram, No change. I've also rebooted holding down the X key, no change. I have tried to reboot with the option key down, but the system will not reboot, it will simply sit there with a black screen and no activity on the disk.
I am very frustrated.
