Hello,
My ThinkPad X100e (Type 3508-CTO) has the following three LEDs:
Power - solid green around power button when system is on
Sleep - solid green when in sleep (standby) mode, blinks when entering or leaving sleep
Battery - toggles between solid, slow-blinking and fast-blinking green and solid, slow-blinking and fast-blinking orange depending upon charge
The other LEDs are probably not present because of space, power or cost reasons, but both Microsoft Windows 7 and Lenovo's Access Connections show the status of the wireless connection on the screen and you can use a program like HddLed Indicator, DriveGLEAM or DKHardDrive-Light to see activity status for the hard disk drive. on the screen.

  • Why is the ThinkPad 256GB SSD so expensive?

    Hey,
I have a T420 in which I have the factory fitted 128gb SSD and I need more space (surprise!)  I'm thinking about swapping it out for a 256gb SSD and was just wondering if there's any reason why I can't/shouldn't do that with an off the shelf drive?
The only 256gb SSD drive listed on the Lenovo Store is nearly £700 http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/gbweb/LenovoPortal/en_GB/catalog.workflow:item.detai...
I can buy a "normal" drive for around £250.  Does anyone know why is the Lenovo one so expensive?
    Thanks in advance.

OEM drives are never cheap. The reason that OEM drives are expensive:
    1. They are supported by a better warranty service, i.e. onsite, back to base, keep your drive if it fails, etc.
    2. They are tested to be compatible with your ThinkPads. While most drives on the market will be compatible, there are odd occasions that this is not true. i.e. some mSATA drives not working (i.e. OCZ Nocti).
    3. The extra cost of maintaining an inventory of small and varied part no. Lenovo doesn't have the volume advantage like that of OEM SSD manufacturers.
    4. Profitability.

  • ThinkPad E455 Excessive Battery Drains When Power Off

I bought a new ThinkPad E455 two months ago with AMD processor and I use Windows 7 (64-bit) as my operating system. The problem is, since a week ago, when I turn off my laptop (completely shut-down, not hibernating nor sleeping), the battery looses 14% in less than 24 hours. This problem has never happened before. When I search for solution, apparently my problem is similar to https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E535-High-battery-drain-when-laptop-is-powered-off/ta-p/1249897 and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E530-Battery-drains-and-power-manager-issue/ta-p/1249887 and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E440-battery-drains-when-powered-off/m-p/1527086/highlight/true#M18743. It appears that the power drains happened in other type of ThinkPad as well. Moreover, it seems that this problem is not limited to ThinkPad series (e.g: http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-2324931/laptop-battery-drains-powered-shutdown.html), and more surprisingly, some of other brands experience this condition as well. My question is, what causes the power drain? I mean, the laptop just worked fine for a period of time (in my case it is two months), if it was trigerred by something, what is it? I looked for the technical updating BIOS solution in http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht077068, but unfortunately the series E455 is not in the list. Of course, updating the BIOS using incompatible version is not recommended by the technical support. Please help me.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Configuration_and_Power_Interface When you think the laptop is powered off it's actually in ACPI Power State S5 with power being supplied to the power button and some of the USB sockets. So, when you shut down the laptop and then removed the power cord, if the BIOS version was lower than 1.13, the laptop was still draining the battery.I followed your suggestion, and it seems solving the problem, thank you. However, another problem arises just recently. When I was playing a game on my laptop, the battery capacity is decreasing when the AC power connected (as described by both lenovo and Windows battery gauge). I post this problem in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/ThinkPad-E455-Battery-Capacity-Reduced-When-Connected-to-AC/td-p/2106218. Oddly, the problem (seems) does not occur when I quit the game to windows. Why was this happen?

  • Why is the ios7 draining my battery by 50% after three hours when i havent used it?

My iphone 5 has been updated to ios7,
the battery life if appauling, i have lost 50% of the battery over three hours when i havent even used it,
i also am  unable to delete my open apps?
the apps keep freezing when i do use it,
This is ridiculous i am really annoyed with this update as i am unable to use my phone or it will die seconds later!

Well, you could start by searching the forum. You might then find this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3391947?tstart=0, a thread with over a million views and over ten thousand posts, discussing this very subject.
But the short answer is you have an app that is using data and power. If you have an Exchange account it might be email if you get a lot of messages. If you have the FaceBook app it is almost certainly that. Exiting out of apps does not necessarily kill the background process if they are built in apps (like mail, contacts and calendar, ping, genius, iTunes). Other apps can re-launch their background tasks if they are set to receive notifications and the receive one.

  • MBP will not turn on but the power indicator light does

I have read 40 pages of discussion, tried all of the boot up key combinations that are listed on the apple support website, and tried the online chat, but it only covers imac and ipod at this time. Have been an apple fan for 15 years, and currently own three plus the 23" display for this 15"MBP, but I am nearly the end of my patience. I did get it to boot up a couple of times by resetting the PRAM but the reinstall disc is now in the computer (never got a chance to use it because it shut down while I was out of the room) and I can neither get it out or start up with the disc. Battery is fully charged. I just want to do my work. Any help? or should I just try to return it?

Do you have an external (bootable) drive, or even an installation disc that you can try to boot from - would at least let you know if the drive is okay, and you could remove the problematic program. If you can do this, also try repairing the permissions of the internal hard drive (use Disk Utility) - sometimes it will help to sort out some stuff.
Even before that, try starting up and "zap the pram" - immediately after the startup chime, hold this key combination - Apple-key + Option-key + P-key + R-key - in that order - hold it down until you force the computer to restart three or four times (ie you'll hear the startup chime three or four times and see the screen flash the same number of times) - release the keys and let the computer try to start up normally. You'd be surprised how many times this will clear up a problem - I still am and I've been doing since 1999.

  • ThinkPad X100e Shuts down a few mins after startup.

I received a Lenovo ThinkPad X100e laptop from my friend to keep. He said everything works fine and that there aren't any issues. I actually have a major issue with it. Everything works fine except for the fact that when I try to install Windows 7 or just sit at the BIOS screen, it shuts down with the fan at full blast throughout the whole time. I can even feel that the system is warm from the underside, and I'm not sure what to do. I have tried running it from the AC adapter only, battery only (after charging it for a while) and battery and charger both attached. Everything except for the SSD is original because I used my own drive for safety reasons. It randomly shuts down at different intervals too. What I mean by that is if I leave it without doing anything at just the BIOS, it stays on for about 20 mins (or so) and if I try and install windows, it stays on for about the same time, If not a little shorter. Also, just to clarify, the fan spins freely and everything works fine, so I have no idea what to do. Help!
PS. This is the single core model.

    Hello,
    Perhaps the unit is overheating?
You can download the ThinkPad X100e Hardware Maintenance Manual and use that as a guide to disassemble the unit, thoroughly clean the inside out, including cleaning a re-applying thermal paste to the heat sink, and it should perform much better.

  • My MacBook pro 2009, won't turn on but the indicator light does.

Hey guys, I am computer illiterate as far as hardware goes, so I hope someone can help me.  I have a 2009 MacBook pro, and today was the first day I have ever had a problem with it.  It won't turn on, however the little power indicator light does come on and it stays on.  The battery indicator is green.  The keyboard isn't working because when I press on the caps lock button it doesnt turn green.  I tried to charge my IPhone to it to see if it was getting enough power, and the IPhone didn't charge.  So I'm guessing that my MacBook isn't getting enough power, could it be this simple or more severe.

It sounds like your MBP doesn't produce a startup chime that is an indication that the POST, Power On Self Test, has failed which means that it has hardware problems that are serious enough to prevent POST from completing successfully.
You are either going to have to do some serious troubleshooting to find out what part of the MBP has failed or take it to Apple and ask them to fix it for you. They will give you an estimate after they see it so that you can decide if you are going to have it fixed or not.

Can I make the dock background color darker to see app. indicator lights easier. Installing OS X Mavericks made it too light.

Hacking around, I found a fix to my own zombified terminal problem.
Control-click (right-click) on the tab to the terminal and one of the options is 'MOVE TAB TO NEW WINDOW'
On moving the terminal tab to the new window, the old terminal window is responsive again (Allowing scrolling to old error messages, etc.)
You have to do this for each tab in the zombified window one-at-a-time
but you can drag all new windows back together as tabs to a single window if you feel like it.
Before trying this, I tried a lot of the other click options and the other options were as unresponsive as the whole terminal window with the problem.

  • Why does my iPad Mini Retina Display battery drain so quickly? I will be playing some 3d games and it says the battery is 90% but I'll turn off and turn  in back on it about 30 minutes and the battery is only 70%. Why is the reading so inaccurate?

I will be playing some 3d games and it says the battery is 90% but I'll turn off and turn  in back on it about 30 minutes and the battery is only 70%. Why is the reading so inaccurate? I understand that 3d games on high brightness will drain my battery quickly, but why doesn't it tell be how low it is to begin with? The other night it said it was around 35% and I turned it on in the morning and it was only 3%?

Sorry there are some typos above, but you should be able to figure out what I'm asking. Let me know if you have tha same problem, know how to fix it, or know if apple is aware of the problem and is adressing it in a future update.

  • As a novice computer user, I wonder why I'm often getting "white-out" (program/app I'm working in goes totally blank onscreen). If it makes a difference, I'm working 99% of the time on battery, not AC, power. What causes this?

As a novice computer user, I wonder why I'm often getting "white-out" (program/app/site I'm working in goes totally blank onscreen). This is when I'm Internet online. If it makes a difference, I'm working 99% of the time on battery, not AC, power. Some of the possibilities I'm guessing are: glitches in my Verizon FiOS Wi-Fi providership?; staying too long on a site that's waiting for me to finish and "Submit"?; computer hardware prob (yikes, I hope not! It's brand new). Any ideas out there?

When this 'white-out' occurs, is the display 100% white with no error message and no menu bar?
Does this occur when you are using Wi Fi or connected to the Internet via the Ethernet cable?
    Ciao.

  • Lenovo... why did you "DownGrade" the ThinkPads?

Dear Sirs, this is a complain and I hope someone will read it in order to make Lenovo ThinkPad's product line become the top choice again.
I'm a ThinkPad user since... the '90. As a result I know the product and I use it daily. I've purchased a new T440 and basically my complain is about the quality. My feeling is that you "DownGraded" the ThinkPad and I don't understand why. You already have a low-cost line of products (IdeaPad). Why overlapping the two lines? ThinkPads are professional products, not consumer. I will be more precise why some examples:
    a. The ETH port is located on the right side. Most people are right-handed and use a mouse. Mouse and ETH cable on the same right side don't work well.
    b. The cover has nothing that helps opening it. How are you expected to open the cover? With one finger... with two fingers... holding the bottom down?
    c. The keyboard misses several keys and leds that are needed:
    1. CAPS LOCK: who much does a CAPS LOCK led cost? Nothing and it saves a lot of time.
    2. Contextual Menu: usually a key located between "AltGr" and "Ctrl". Very useful when typing text and running grammar correction. Don't answer that I can use the mouse because this is the typical answer by someone that doesn't use PCs for typing.
    3. The Numerical Keys.
    4. The HDD activity LED. When a PC doesn't respond as expected (or even freezes for a while) the first thing you look at is the HDD LED. There is no one any more.
    5. The PAUSE Key.
    d. ONLY 2 USB ports.
The T440 is my Company's Laptop and I personally own a X301. I was considering buying a new ThinkPad for my personal use in place of the X301 but after this T440 experience I'm considering other products.
Please let me know what you think and share with us what are you planning for the near future.
    Thank you.

I was wondering why the iPhone 5 has the option for a battery percentage and the iPod touch 5g doesn't? I mean... they are almost both the same thing... just the iPod does not have the phone.

One likely reason is the % battery is not that accurate because of the smaller battery capacity in the iPod compared to iPhone and iPad. Users why use a % battery app post that the % reading changes a lot.
