Why is the time remaining so wrong?

I've noticed over the past few years that the "Time Remaining" estimates from various applications in OS X are increasingly inaccurate - usually the estimate is too long!
This is true for apps from Itunes, to Disk Utility, to <on and on and on>. For example, I was just burning a DVD from a playlist in ITunes and when it started the "Finishing" part - it said "Might be up to an hour". It completed in 30 seconds.
Time estimates are just that - estimates - but do they have to be so wildly inaccurate as to be useless as a guide? I have a feeling nobody in the OS X world has looked at how they update the estimate in a long time, and they do not presently reflect the performance of either hardware or software.
Hey Apple!  Update the Time Remaining code! Please?
David

Ignoring the boot progress bar (which I believe is an animation, at least it was in my old Tiger system), the progress bars are usually computed by specifying a range of values to produce a scaling factor and updated by supplying values within that range.  The amount of progress is determined by the supplied values within the range.
The segment of code responsible for supplying values is given control on some criteria within the algorithm doing whatever the progress is to measure.  There's potentially a lot of variables that can affect when this segment of code is called to update its progress.  With disk copies there's how fast the drives are, buffer sizes, what else is running that could interrupt the process, and who knows what else.  Certainly you should not expect the progress bar drawing to have a high priority in the grand scheme of things.  I'd rather the service be "obsessed" with its primary goal (whatever its service is to do) rather then keeping me constantly updated every millisecond taking valuable cycles from the primary task.

Why is the time remaining going up as I install adobe inDesign through creative cloud?

Downloads have built-in "checksums" (I think that's the correct term that basically check to make sure the bits of data are being downloaded correctly.
Sometimes the previous check has to redownload the previous bits. That can cause the time to go up.
Also, it may be that your bandwidth speed is slowing down or lots of others are accessing the bandwidth.
BUT if the download goes way, way up—like instead of 12 minutes, it goes to 6 hours, something's wrong with the installation.

  • Why is the Time remaining not showing up screen?

When listening to music the time remaining doesn't show up on the screen. It does show up on my iPhone 4S but not iPod Touch. Why is that?

Because you need to tap the Now Playing screen so that the time scrubber bar is overlayed onto the artwork.

When watching an item ending in ebay/firefox, the time remaining doesn't count down. However I'm sure it used too.

    Just an update...
I took my computer into the Apple Store and they gave me a new battery (again).  I also erased my hard drive and reinstalled Lion.  I am still having the same problem with my battery icon not counting down (when i have the power cord unplugged).  Another thing I may have not talked about is when I unplug my power adapter from my MacBook the screen used to dim slightly,  It no longer does that. Hmm.  And yes I have checked the power settings.
I am seeing a big difference in my new battery though.  The 6 month old battery I was using before my replacement wasn't lasting but maybe and hour before completely turning off my laptop.  SInce I got my replacement battery I am back to a regular battery life.  Maybe a couple issues going on here...
As a fix, I purchased Battery Guard from the app store and placed the icon on my tool bar.  It actually counts down my battery life as a percentage.  So its a huge help.  I just don't know why the native Mac icon isn't working properly??  One thing I have noticed is the 3rd party app will only count down using a Percentage.  But, like the native Mac icon it will not count down using time.  Something else to add...  After using my battery, and I plug my MacBook back in, the battery icon will count up.  Kinda strange that it will count up but not down.
Dstppy, any luck at the Apple Store?

  • It appears that the time remaining calculation is hindering the download.

So I'm trying to download a 2GB movie on a slow DSL connection.  I understand it's going to take a while, BUT...
Why does iTunes try and recalculate the time remaining after 1k of download?  Each time it recalcs, it slows down the download.  I wait for recalc, then another 1k gets added and it recalcs.  What a waste of processing time.
Here's the interesting part.  If I pause the download then restart it, bang! I get 1k more instantly.  Now if I sit here and pause/start/pause/start/pause/... you get the idea, I can download it faster than just letting it do it's dumb calculation.
Help!  Can I turn off the calculation?
    Thanks

I agree, there is something strange. I am just downloading an update for my ipad and can see what you are saying.
I also experienced this sort of problem much worse when converting aac to mp3's.
If you stay on the page where you selected the music and start the conversion you can see the progress bar and it goes like a snail with someone standing on it. If you swap to another page where you can't see the progress bar it all speeds up amazingly.
    That's life

  • Why is the Apple Weather App wrong for low temps in Albuquerque, NM?  Low temp is always displays about 10 degrees too low.

Why is the Apple Weather App wrong for low temps in Albuquerque, NM?
Low temp is always displays about 10 degrees too low.

The reason for the problematic weather prediction in Apple is simple and disturbing at the same time.
    1. Traditionally Apple gets its weather data from Yahoo! they do so regardless to the fact that Yahoo is not a weather company, this arrangement has historical reasons (and it has nothing to do with the accuracy or quality of service you as a user are getting from Apple weather).
    2. Yahoo! (not a weather company) gets its weather data from the Weather Channel.
    3. Weather Channel CEO (David Kenny) also serves as Yahoo board member. So good luck changing the Weather Channel Yahoo agreement.
    4. The iPhone build in weather app is one of the world most popular apps, The Weather Channel has no incentive to make the Apple weather app as accurate as The Weather Channel own app.
The result is – easy to use inaccurate weather app

  • Calculate the time remaining during File Download ?

    Hi
I need to calculate the time remaining of file download . I am using NSURLConnection for file download in Cocoa . I am able to show the download progressbar . I want to show the time remaining for complete download and it should vary if network signal fluctuate .
    Please guide me ...
    Thanks

The tricky part is to define what is a disturbance
First do once  a correlation to find and correct a shift in the signal
Look at the (absolute or squared) difference of both signals and define a threswhold and use the threshold detector vi
from the point location(s) calculate the time and log it.
And have a look at the waveform monitoring vis....

  • Why is the time wrong when setting itself automatically under Lion

My Date and Time preferences are set to ‘set date and time automatically’ and the zone is set to Europe (where I live).
However, since updating to Lion 10.7.1 (via the App Store), the time is showing as 8 hours early (ie USA time. What is the cause for this and are there any fixes?
    Thanks?

That is what makes the time go wrong. I can only ‘fix’ it by setting it to manual and adjusting it myself. Every time I set it to ‘automatic’ it sets itself not to European times (as selected) but to 8 hours earlier....

  • Why does the iPhone 5c display wrong time?

My iphone 5c currently started displaying the wrong time. I hadnt updated the software yet and thought this was the source of the issue. After the update was complete the time was still incorrect. I have tried syncing my phone with itunes, deleting world clocks, doing hard resets, even wiped the phone back to factory settings. Nothing has worked

Ok, so this is a two fold problem.  One just like brad805 pointed out you have to have Settings App > General > Date & Time > if Set Automatically is OFF > ON, if it was ON > OFF > Set Date & Time yourself (but when you bring up this screen to manually set time there is this little reminder about having location services set to ON for it to change time zones correctly).  So, leave it  Settings App > General > Date & Time > if Set Automatically is OFF > ON, now go back to Settings App>Privacy>Location Services>ON (if off).  Once I did this (which mine was off) and I went back to Date & Time instead of it thinking I was in New York, it now showed a very complicated America/Indiana/Indiana... (I suspect this is due to the fact that Indiana has 3 time zones EST, EDT (for the counties that observe) and CDT).  Now time is running automatic and smoothly.  This was on an iPhone 5c 16 GB running 7.1.2 on Verizon.  I hope this helps.
On a side note, its sad that techs in the store cannot read the screen and Apples little notes on it to help you out.
