Why is there a "modified" and an "Original" file in iPhoto Library?

I ran out of space on a 100 Gig drive today.. My iphoto library shows 23.9 gb on the bottom left hand side of the iphoto screen.. But when I look at the drive I find the "modified" file is 23.9 gig and the "original" file is 78 gigs.
Anyone know if I need both of those files?
Thanks. Gil

Gil
Yes you most certainly need both of those.
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
iPhoto always preserves your Original file. When you edit, export or whatever, the app uses a copy for these actions. In doing this it’s working to the best principles of Digital Asset Management. So, in your Modified folder are the edited versions of the pics. This is why you can use the Photos -> Revert to Original command. It’s also the basis of the Non-Destructive editing feature.
If you don’t want this way of working then, simply, don’t use iPhoto. You simply cannot stop it doing this.
If disk space is an issue you can run your Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys.  Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it.  It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process.  Other PowerPC to Intel migration issues are covered here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

  • "Modified" vs. "Original" files in iphoto

What is the purpose of having the photos split into these two files in iphoto? When I download them off of my camera, it seems to put some of them in the "modified" files right away (the movies, mostly?)
Anyway, just hoping for an explanation as to the point of having the photos from one roll in two separate files. Also, if I put all of the photos from a roll into one file or the other manually (so that they are consolidated) how will this affect iphoto? Will it move them back?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4)

You see movies in the Modified folders because of the way iPhoto files your video clips. It places the actual clip inside the Originals folder. When you import a clip iPhoto creates a jpeg of the first frame - that jpeg goes in the Modified folder. A thumbnail of this frame is also created and stored in the Data folder. When you view your library you are shown the thumbnail. When you increase the size to a certain point you are given the full-size jpeg. When you double-click a movie clip, the Original is opened with QuickTime so that you can play it.
If you shoot in camera RAW the system is similar. The RAW goes in Originals, a jpeg goes in Modified for display purposes, and a thumbnail jpeg goes in Data.
All this is nice to know, but it doesn't really matter. As PhillyPhan and Old Toad have said, you are supposed to use iPhoto to access those files once you import them into your library. Don't change the way iPhoto files them, and don't use the Finder to access them. See this from the iPhoto Help, under "About using the iPhoto Library":
"IMPORTANT: There is also an "iPhoto Library" folder located in the Pictures folder in your home folder, outside the iPhoto application. If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise touch files or folders within this folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in the iPhoto application.
"The files within this folder should only be manipulated by a customer care representative.
Perhaps you are used to file browsers. With a file browser you keep your files in folders, then organize everything into subfolders in whatever structure you like. Then you browse through those folders to find your files. You have to decide if that picture of your dog with your kid belongs in the folder for your dog, your kid, the date it was taken, etc. To have it in each place would necessitate keeping multiple copies. You can do this yourself by using the Finder to navigate through the folders, or use an application that assists with file browsing and perhaps offers sorting and tagging.
iPhoto is not a file browser, it is a database application. With a database application you import your files into the database. From that point, you no longer access those files from within their folders and subfolders. Instead, you open the application and access them from there. An advantage is that the photo of your dog with your kid can now be placed in your dog album your kid's album, your date-based album, your holiday album, etc. with no duplication of that photo eating up space on your hard drive. Plus, you have many features for tagging and sorting your photos so that you can easily find one picture or a whole group with a few clicks. This results in more power, using less storage, making iPhoto an efficient application.
If you need to use your photos outside of iPhoto, then use iPhoto to locate and select them, and export them to your Desktop. iPhoto knows which folders your photos are in and will always give you the most recent, full-size files. (You can rename and resize the copies during the export process, if you like.) This is handy for uploading to websites, attaching to email, or burning a CD for a photo developer. Trash the exports when done, since iPhoto retains the files.
To edit your photos in another application, set it as an external editor in iPhoto's preferences. Use iPhoto to select the photo, double-click to open it in your editor, then save (not save as) and the edited version is saved back into your iPhoto library.
    Regards.

  • Moving photos, some modified and some original to external hard drive

I have about 3000 photos that I would like to move either to my external hard drive or DVD to free up some space. My dilemma is that I would like only to have one of each picture. What I mean by this is that if I have modified a photo it seems that both the modified and the original are copied. I don't need duplicates. But if I haven't modified the picture I would need the orignal to copy. Thoughts? Thanks.

Hi, bows4474. If you select pictures in your library and Export them to a folder on your desktop or elsewhere on your hard drive — being sure to select Original Size in the Export dialog box — then that folder will contain the modified versions of pictures you've modified and the original versions of pictures you haven't modified. It won't contain the originals of pictures you've modified. It also won't be an iPhoto Library database folder, so it won't contain any thumbnails, albums, film rolls, books, slideshows, etc. that were created in iPhoto — it will simply be a folder full of image files. You can then burn it to CD or DVD, and you won't need iPhoto to access and open the files on any Mac or PC. But they won't be organized as you organized them in iPhoto, and if any of them have the same names, you won't be able to put same-named images in the same folder without one of them replacing the other(s).
To get all the pictures back into iPhoto at any later time, you'd probably want to create a brand new iPhoto Library and import them into it. Importing them back into the same library you exported them from would duplicate every one there, creating real havoc.

The massage means what it says. iTunes can't find the actual music files. All iTunes has is a database of where the files should be and they are not there.

  • How can I change the time of photos in info in iPhoto for iOS. I've done it in iPhoto for Mac but when I sync to my ipad the info field goes back to the camera time ignoring "modify original files" in iPhoto for Mac?

I used "adjust date and time" and"modify original files" to correct the time of photos taken on a camera used in Peru which was set to UK rather than local time. which is 6 hours  behind. This was to bring them into line with shots taken with other cameras set to local time. This was using iphoto 08 on a Mac. I then synced to my iPad. The photos stayed in the correct order in photos but in iphoto (iOS version) the original dates appear (the camera dates) and so the photos are out of chronological order again. This looks like a bug but is there a fix?

don't know what you mean by "write to master" but speculate that it means modify the original times, in which case the taken times on the camera should no longer be present
No,I meant your using the option "modify original files" will do exactly that - change the capture date original master files stored in the iPhoto library. Only when you do that, the "date modified" of your original files will be changed as well, and it will now be the date of your manipulation of the capture date.
Oh - I hadnt considered that possibility - but of that were the case, why don't my manipulated photos go to the end of the sequence as I have done all the manipulation after the end of the holiday??
In photos the synced album maintains the chronological order which I set up on the mac by modifying the originals, as you said,
That is what the linked article is describing: "some apps may sort your photos in the order you specify in the app (such as iPhoto or Aperture"
The problem I have is that, in the album, iphoto (ipad) sorts them differently to both iphoto (Mac) and the photos tab on the ipad
In addition to albums and events, synced photos appear in a unified category called Photo Library (on iPad, this is the Photos tab). Photos are not duplicated. This category will also sort photos in ascending order by the date modified.
"on ipad this is the Photos tab" - but this displays as per the original sequence ignoring time adjustments - the manipulations seem to be ignored (but are reflected in the album in the photos tab) and the photos tahat have been modified stay in their original positiom - they don't get put the end
Because the library uses a different date - the date modified - the date of the last time the file has been changed in any way - any editing you do to your image, including adjust date and time will change the "date modified"
This may change the sorting of the database but it appears not to influence the order in the albums
In addition to albums and events, synced photos appear in a unified category called Photo Library (on iPad, this is the Photos tab). Photos are not duplicated. This category will also sort photos in ascending order by the date modified.
So how can i get my photos in date and time order in an album in iphoto for ipad?
    Thanks for your help

  • Why won't Front Row play movies located in my iPhoto Library?

I currently have a little over 300 short movies from my digital cameras. I keep them in subfolders located at /Users/shared/Shared Movies/digital camera movies/ and Front Row plays them just fine under each user account since each user has an alias to /Users/shared/Shared Movies/ located in their "movies" folder within their home folder.
Recently a buddy convinced me to import my short digicam movies into iPhoto as an easier way to organize the short .mov and .avi files. I have over 14K image files in my library so I liked the idea of browsing my video shorts using iPhoto. I created a smart album in iPhoto for all file names ending with .avi or .mov and that works great to quickly locate the relatively few video files in the sea of digital stills.
BUT... WHY won't Front Row locate or play the movies that are located inside of iPhoto's Library? Did they just forget this functionality? Front Row's Video player displays Video Podcasts located in iTunes why wouldn't there also be an automagic category that appears in Front Row for movies located in your iPhoto Library?!
Front Row chokes if I attempt to play the smart "movies" album I created in iPhoto. It just keeps spinning the little "train tracks" progress thingy and never shows a movie. I finally just hit the menu button on the remote to "back out" of that selection.
The other work around I tried to play these movies located in iPhoto was a smart folder located at /Users/shared/Shared Movies/ that displays filenames that contain .mov and .avi located in my iPhoto library folder. This doesn't work. Front Row's Video player will not display the movies found by a smart folder the same way it does for an alias to a folder or file.
I don't want to keep duplicate copies of these movie files on my HD. I'll have to keep them located outside of iPhoto so I can enjoy browsing and watching them "on demand" using Front Row.
What is the fix? Work around?

Thanks for the suggestion but that isn't an option. Think about how iPhoto stores images and movies you import into the photo library. It will import files originally located in one folder and scatter them by storing all the files in hundreds of folders and subfolders based on date. Originally I had my movies in my home movie folder and even used an alias to the shared movies. That all works fine and it isn't the issue. The issue is when you try to use the only tool Apple provides to organize your digital images, both still and moving pictures. Once you import your movies into the iPhoto Library they become invisible to Front Row's video player.
Once iPhoto imports my 300+ files and scatters them into hundreds of subfolders based on the date -how in the world would you even begin to maintain aliases in a folder that point to these files. That is NOT an option, who would do that?! That is why I decided to try the smart folder since it would dynamically locate all the files with .mov and .avi in the file name located within the iPhoto library. Good idea but Front Row will not play these files listed in the result set of a smart folder. It will follow an alias but not play the contents of a smart folder.
Front Row should handle movie files within the iPhoto library the same way it deals with videos within the iTunes library. Poor design, oversight, bug, whatever -it should be fixed. There should be an automatic category that appears under the Front Row video player for "Movies in iPhoto" and if you have no movies in your library it displays something like it does when you have no video podcasts, or no TV shows, or no music videos in iTunes. Come on, how many users have those items vs. an iPhoto library with movies from their digital cameras? I bet more users have movies from their digital cameras that currently drop through a gaping hole in the design of Front Row if they use iPhoto to manage their digicam movie files.

Where are the masters actually stored upon conversion from Aperture to Photos? Photos?
The master files are stored on your drive, but they are not actually stored "in" any folder. Folders are really just special files that store various bits of information about the files associated with that folder, including links to where they actually are stored. That's why you can "move" a file from one folder to another very quickly: all that you really are doing is moving the link & other info from one folder to the other folder, while the file itself stays where it was.
Because of this, it is possible for more than one folder to link to the same file -- in the Finder it looks just like there are two copies of the file, one in each folder, but there really is just the one copy. From the description in the Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries doc, it looks like that's what happens when you import your iPhoto library into Photos -- both the old iPhoto Library "file" (which actually is a set of folders & subfolders of files) & the Photos Library (also consisting of folders & files) contain links to the master files, but like the Apple doc says, there really is just one set of master files being stored.
This is very similar to the way Time Machine backups look like they have multiple copies of the same unique file, one in each time-stamped backup folder, but there really is only one copy on the Time Machine drive. My guess is Apple is using hard links for this, which means the actual master files will not be deleted from the file system as long as at least one link remains to each of them.
So you should be safe in deleting the old iPhotos Library once you are absolutely sure you don't need it, but to be sure, if it was me I would make a backup just in case, or better yet just leave it alone.

  • I have files in my iTunes media folder that somehow are not in my library. How do I get iTunes to scan my media folder and add missing files to my library without making a copy of each file in the same location?

I have files in my iTunes media folder that somehow are not in my library. How do I get iTunes to scan my media folder and add missing files to my library without making a copy of each file in the same location? If I use add file / folder to library, it scans the folder and then makes a copy of any file that is not in my library in the exact same location; I recal in older versions of iTunes being able to just drag my media folder into my library and it would update missing links.

Only the songs that are connected to iTunes will be copied when you consolidate to a new folder.
Splitting the media folder away from the usual location makes it harder to move iTunes in the future.
Are you go move everything back once you've tidied up or are you going to leave it that way? Either way I'd recommend you create an iTunes folder at the new location, an iTunes Media folder inside that, and consolidate to this new iTunes Media folder. You should also use the option File > LIbrary > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder"> if you have not already done so.

  • Why won't my unzipped and rezipped IDML file open in InDesign?

I'm a developer working on an IDML based project.
My application opens an IDML file, inflates the contents and (for the moment, without making any changes), deflates them again.
The result is a file which:
    a) Opens fine in any zip application
    b) My code can then reopen without problems.
InDesign, however, throws the following error:
"Cannot open the file "filename.idml". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be miussing, or the file may be open in another application."
I have verified that the file is not open in another app, and that no plug ins are involved.
InDesign will open the original IDML file that it exported, so there's no general error.
I assume the issue is with the zip container not being UCF compliant, and I'm trying to diagnose what the problem might be.
    My question(s):
Has anyone been through this and do they have any suggestions or guidance?
Is there any way I can get InDesign to tell me in more detail why it cannot open the file?
What are the most likely issues with the container?
I have inspected both the original file and the output file using Winzip, and I append the results of a detailed diagnostic on each below. The only difference I can see is that some files in the original are not compressed (they are simply stored in the zip container), but the UCF specification seems to suggest that a container can contain either compressed or normal files, so I don't see why this should be a problem. Would this cause InDesign to have a problem?
Many thanks in advance for any assistance. Zip file diagnostics follow.
