Why is there a question mark on my startup disk.

When I go to apple system preferences, there is a question mark on my startup disk. Why? and what should I do to resolve it.
I don't have any problem starting my ocmputer and using it.

in the system pref.
the top line ... "Show all, Display, Sound, Network,
Startup disk
my 'startup disk' has a question mark!
Right. That's fine. It's just telling you that you can click that icon to choose a different Startup Disk. That question mark is part of the icon for that preference pane.
I click on it and I get a"select the system.."
It shows my Mac OS 10.3.9 and Network Startup which
has a question mark
I do have OS selected.
and question mark on Network.
Is that correct?
Correct.
Now, where do I go to see my startup items?
Click on "Show All" in the System Preferences. Then Accounts down in the System section. Choose your account in the list at the left hand side, then choose the "Startup Items" tab on the right.
To remove an app from that list, select it and use the "-" button below. Unchecking it just means that if the application has a window, it'll be hidden at startup.
Thanks for all your help.
You're welcome.
cheers,
charlie

Why is there a question mark on the Startup Disc folder in System Preferences?
    Thanks in advance.

Because there's a permissions issue with the application, or it's been moved somewhere which isn't accessible to the second user account, or its entry in the Dock plist on the second account is corrupt, in which case it needs to be located in the Applications folder and dragged to the Dock.

  • Why is there a question mark on Start up disk?

    Hello everyone,
So I turned on my computer and a flashing folder with a question mark appeared. I followed some intructions that I found here such as pressing the pressing the On button when I heard the start up tone but it took me to a I wanna say "back up" disk.. The original start up disk has a question mark in it and I cannot access to any of my original files etc. It's very frustrating. I have thought about taking it to the apple store but I want to know if there's a way where I can fix it myself. As you all know the apple store can be a bit pricey..
    Thanks for your time.

    Not good in most instances.
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
This can happen when your Mac can't find a System Folder to boot from either because the startup disk is failing or failed.
Try starting up while holding down the Option key. Theoretically, that should prompt the Startup Manager window. Select the startup disk then click Restart.

  • Why is there a question mark in the Finder window?

Why is there a question mark in the finder window that looks like this.     When I click the question mark in displays this message.

Because the item there has been moved from its original location or deleted (there's none in that location by default), or something made the Finder think there was an item there. In either case, the question mark can be removed by control-clicking it and choosing Remove Item, or by command-clicking it and dragging it out of the window.

Why is there a Question Mark on my Documents folder? It will not let me access the folder.
    Thank You

The question mark means the link to your Documents folder icon on your Dock (which is only an alias) has been broken.
Open Finder an observe your Documents folder.
Drag the one with the question mark off the Dock. It will vanish!
Drag the one from your Finder back to the Dock to replace it. This re-establishes the link

  • Why is there a Question Mark in my Finder Window?

This question mark has recently appeared in my finder windows on my 21" iMac (2010), any ideas why?

If you performed an upgrade from an earlier version (such as 10.6.8) there might have been an item that you added to your Finder Window but cannot be found now to reinstate as part of the Finder Window. It such a case a Question Mark Icon appears as a place holder for the missing (or unfound) item.

  • Why is there a question mark over a printer icon on my dock?

I have just installed a new printer on my computer.  I also have another printer installed along with this one.  I put this new printer's icon on my dock.  Now my old printer icon is showing a question mark over it.  I set my new printer to be the default printer.  Didn't know if that was the problem, so reset the default printer to be my old printer, but icon stayed.  Reset new printer to default and then turned on the old printer.  Question mark still there.  Set old printer to default and tuned on the old printer.  Set old printer to scan to see if setting it up to use it would do something.  Question mark still there.  I am stumped.  Anyone know why this is happening?  It just bugs me that it won't go away.

Noticed in the print summary that the printer icon had a pause symbol over it even though there was no print job listed that could be deleted.  Then got brilliant idea - took icon off of dock and dragged a new icon to dock - voila!! question mark gone!!  Crazy.  Anyway thanks for your thoughts as it led me to try this.

  • Why is there a question mark in the top right corner of finder window?

just noticed this today, what does it mean?

when i click on it it says " the item can not be found" what item?
    thanks for your help.

This just happened to me. Help.
There was a mounted disk image on the desktop. I used to command-drag these to the drive so that it would copy as a whole folder. I just did that in Mountain Lion. But a folder was nowhere to be found. I forgot about it and just ejected the disk image.
Now I see there is a question mark at the right of every Finder window. I can't seem to remove it.
EDIT: I googled for the answer and found it. It can be removed by first right-clicking to "Customize Toolbar". Then drag it off and poof..

  • Why is there a question mark

There is a question mark on one of the pictures in my photobook creation.  What is it and how do I fix it?

It means that the PSE Organizer cannot find the photo. It is not in the place that PSE expects it to be. This usually happens becuase you renamed or moved or deleted the photo outside of PSE. To fix it, find the actual location and file name of this photo using Windows, then in PSE select the photo and then File->Reconnect and then point PSE to the actual location of the photo.

  • Why do I get question marks on iphoto instead of the photos?

Why do I get question marks on iphoto instead of the photos?

Possibly because you have set iPhoto to refer to photos stored elsewhere rather than copying them into its own library; and you've moved the photos.
If you have it set this way, Preferences>Advanced - 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library' will be unchecked.

  • Question mark folder at startup, safe boot not working

Last night my iMac froze up, Force Quit didn't work, and I used the Power button to shut it off.  When trying to restart, it was getting stuck at the grey Apple.
I tried unplugging the peripherals and restarting; zapping the PRAM and restarting; safe boot and restarting.  Safe boot did it.
I then ended up going through those steps a few more times as my iMac starting freezing up again.  One of those times I changed all my applications in the dock that were set to launch at login to not do so, wondering if that was somehow causing a problem.  I also took a folder of recent items I'd created, mostly a LOT of PDFs of newspaper articles, burned it to a DVD and deleted the folder to free up more memory if that was part of the problem (I'm running out).  I then restarted from the Apple menu and it shut down through safe boot and then restarted without safe boot and did so just fine.  I ran Disk Utility and very few if any permissions needed repairing.  And it was operating OK for a bit and then froze up again.
Now I'm getting the question mark folder at startup and safe boot isn't working.  What should I be trying next?  Lion Recovery with Command-R?  I'm relatively new to Lion, but it had been working OK for me for a while now.
What other things should I try?  Would Target Disk mode possibly work from the MacBook I'm using now, which doesn't have Lion installed?

The question mark folder usually means that the
firmware could either not find a valid operating
system to boot, or, it could not find a hard disk
with an operating system on it.
Have you tried booting to Lion Recovery?  If
you can, then go into Disk Utility and do a
Repair Disk on your OSX volume.  If the
OSX volume is not showing up, you may need
to do a reformat and re-install.
Since it is a 24" iMac (from your description) it was
a pre-Lion Mac.  If you still have the original install
disks, try booting with it and use Disk Utility from it
to see if the hard drive is working.
Try this first before making a road trip.

  • Folder with question mark + wont boot from disk

    Hi
I am trying to reinstall a powermac g5 from the disk, using a old hard drive that works.. (formatted in NTFS) (hoping that when selected to boot from disk, mac will then erase and reformat it)this image is presented when i hold down the option key and the disk ejects this other image is presented when i hold down C (folder with question mark blinking) and the disk ejects... also presented if i boot normally.... Could some help be offered please??????
    Powermac G5
    Thank you in advance

Yes, you must Format it HFS+ first...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    How to format your disks...

(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
