Why is there an "Aperture Book Printing and Design" section?

What is the point in having "Aperture Book Printing and Design" separate from 'everything else'?? Why? It something most people don't use anyway isn't it?

Icc profiles for aperture book printing...

Do the Aperture Book Printing folks provide icc profiles so I can soft-proof the images beforehand?

At one point, in Mark's email to you, as mentioned above in his email from Apple, I have to say I am a little surprised about his statement re: monitors provide fairly accurate... when the images saved in an sRGB colour space...
It is very tricky statement where it depends on how we define the term "fairly accurate" in monitors. What we don't know if Mark meant by when monitor has been "properly" set up as profiled and calibrated with high-grade calibration hardware. Unless IF the monitor has been proper profiled and calibrated, then his statement would be correct. But IF not profiled or calibrated at all, I am afraid that his statement is incorrect.
Now these days with newer monitors and newer Apple laptops with better monitor technology, it is still need to be properly profiled and calibrated. It just depends on individual's preference, desire and the purpose of such project whatever someone is working on. While majority of Aperture users' are probably mostly professional photographers or those who are into photography savvy, then colour-managed workflow is a norm. For me, it IS absolute A MUST colour-managed workflow.
Although, I do a heavy post-production workflow on MacPro where I always have my monitors calibrated. I don't typically calibrate my laptop, though. Because sometimes I forgot to turn off the automatic ambient light in System Preference in Display section. It is a little inconvenience in that case. Unless if I am being away on photographic trips far from Canada abroad, then it is a different story. But not always bring my calibration device with me. Too inconvenience to haul it around at the airports etc. So colour-managed workflow is a must with MacPro in my studio.
However, other individuals have their own preference, comfort zone and the purpose of such project. Perhaps their workflow set up differently than yours or mine, that is ok.
But in that email you received from someone at Apple didn't make it clear about that statement about 'fairly accuracy'.
Then something else is something else actually--when Apple guy said presses are not always.... Again, that is why it is important that you get monitor properly profiled and calibrated. Once it is done properly, then it is all good. But remember, you need to re-calibrate monitor once a week or every two weeks or once month. In order to get pretty close to printed output, always a good idea to soft proof. If needed to make slightly conservative adjustments to your satisfaction or level of expectation, the output would be fairly close to what it is appeared in monitor. When I mean "fairly close" in comparing the output to what you are seeing in monitor with these post-production images used in that output, in fairness, I would estimate fairly close in terms of anywhere in range between 92 to 95 percent - that is very fair conservative perspective on how close in the output vs monitor. It is truly, really, truly rare to get the output 100% as obvious and precise as you are seeing in monitor. If that is the case, and if that is true FOR that person achieved this, this probably means takes that person many years to perfect his/her colour-managed workflow for that matter. Never has been that pretty close, but I'd be shocked if I see mine aced right on spot. I'd be lying to you if I get all output perfect as appeared in my monitors. If I did, that would be incorrect statement.
It seems a lot of factors and things to do and things need to require in a thoroughly colour-managed workflow production, it is how it is done. But this can also means save money, effort and time if done properly right from the beginning.
In fairness, I would really wish that guy from Apple should have said a little more obvious and precise with his definition of fairly accuracy with monitors. It doesn't says what kind of monitors he refers to. Low quality, cheap monitors deliver good results? Lot of factors need to be looked at for consideration for yourself.
Of course, as you can tell that colour management topic is pretty heavy, highly technical and everything in deep thinking with world of colours. It takes years for an individual (both pros and non-pro individuals) finally understand what it is all about. Again, technologies evolve rapid for the better in many cases for new monitors, commercial print equips, advanced ink technology, advanced paper production technology... That goes on effortless endless, actually.
Hope some of thoughtfu perspective and experience be of some interest, and it is obvious that this discussion probably will attract some more excitement discussion, the more the better. So that every other Aperture users who have the similar issues, they'll definitely want to come to here... And learn and share.
I also use Blurb too. They are getting better than it was once a couple years ago when Blurb first started. As they add more variety of book sizes, types of paper stock and things like that. This also give someone some flexibility in choosing workflow production using Blurb software or online bookmaking or using PDF to Book service for those who are advanced users that use InDesign layout design app. In that case of PDF to Book, the advanced users would need to download Blurb's preset plug-in to put in InDesign in order to export the PDF output to meet and integrate into Blurb's Preflight Checklist at the time of upload. I use PDF to Book service with InDesign, etc. It is fairly self explanatory and easy to follow steps. Also slightly off topic, but when making Blurb book, to get most out of their product and service with Blurb, in that case, they came up with brilliant resource called Colour Resource Centre designed for making more beautiful books. In that resource centre, it is easy to read and follow.
I would think this probably shed some insights and understanding the basics of colour management, the whole thing all about this, that and the other all together.
I would also want other high-powered hard-core Aperture users share their experience with Aperture Book printing service. I'd be happy to share my experience about making Aperture Book vs. Blurb Book through PDF to Book service. However, I would think the export to PDF from Aperture probably has it's own different setting or slightly different configuration inside the PDF engine on Mac for Blurb book. There has been some discussion about wanting a Aperture Plug In for Blurb Book. blurb has been quiet on it, I take that they probably will not develop a special plug-in for Aperture Users. Sorry if it is a little off topic. But somehow someone in the discussion mention Blurb. so...

This is usually indicative of a defective print cartridge. Suspect the black is low in ink or defective. Please check all cartridges.

can I export web logs and have apple books made without a .mac account?

A .Mac account is not required to order iPhoto or Aperture books from Apple or to publish an Aperture gallery to the Internet; in the second case, you will need a webserver to put the gallery on.

Aperture Book Printing+Poor Print Quality

Hello,
I'm wondering if this is a one off, but i just received a book printed through Aperture, the printed pages look terrible, there's banding through several of the images, the images are grainy, it looks like they have printed it on a lazer printer. the images all print fine on an Epson 7800, so there's no problem with the images.
Has anyone had these problems - or did i just get a bad example ?

It depends.
There do seem to be several reports of pages (on the interior, in particular) printing with washed-out coloring.
You can contact Photo Services and get a credit. They can also review the file and see if there is a problem there; they keep the files for 40 days.

Book printing and sharpening

Hello,
I am currently building my first Aperture book. I am wondering what level of sharpening I should apply to my images. Or does the book printing process automatically apply some level of sharpening ?

I LOVE my books the quality for cost ratio is amazing - especially after the last update.
In my experience it seems that aperture applies some sort of smart resizing / sharpening depending on how the image is sized.
When you click the order button - aperture will generate the book and let you view the PDF before you actually click Confirm and pay - so you can look at your PDF and save a copy off with preview and do your own printing if you want to see how its sharpened -
Again, my experience has been that both the color profile and image sharpness has been optimized for the printing service internally.

Aperture book printing discounts???

Anyone know if Apple is offering a discount on book printing at the moment? (or is about to offer one?) I'm just about to submit a major order for a client and if I could save a few extra $$$, it would be great.

Color for Aperture online printing and books

Anyone know what color profile in Aperture we need to choose for having photos printed or books made from Aperture's online services?

Books are printed using the Kodak NexPress which does use icc color profiles. In fact when you qualify a grade of paper you can either generate a "universal" profile (for a grade of paper) which will work (but not great) with different coated papers. Then their is a "Custom" icc profile they generate. A custom profile will work only with the paper that has been qualified. That is the best profile which will give the best results.
If they wanted (Apple) they could provide the profile as one has been generated and to my knowledge they use the same paper all the time for books. It is my understanding they may use several commercial printers all who use the Kodak NexPress for all their products. Personally I think the HP Indigo does a slightly better job but there are issues with that technology as well!!

Aperture book Printing

Hi,
I prepared with “Aperture 2” a 38 pages black book and ordered it to Apple on 5th January 2009 to make a test.
I received it today the 14th, after checking it I can stress that it is not good, it is VERY GOOD, all colours are identical to the ones shown on 30" HD cinema display, there isn't any differences in between the screen and the book.
I was afraid since I printed some of the photos on my HP Photosmart 8250 and colours were very bad.
Congrats to Apple's suppliers, now I can order the remaining that is about 10 units.

I read that soft proofing on aperture 2.2 should be done in sRGB.
That can't be right, can it?
Colour spaces support a different nature and different number of colours. If colour spaces are plotted in the multidimensional Profile Connection Space, one can see that they are of different shape and different size.
Open the Apple ColorSync Utility, select Profiles and click the disclosure icon for RGB. This shows all ICC profiles with data space RGB, as well type MNTR Monitor as type PRTR Printer. Scroll down to select an sRGB profile (probably you will find several).
To the left, a CIELa*b plot is shown in 3D. At the top left corner, press the disclosure icon and scroll down to select Hold for Comparison. If you now select AdobeRGB (1998), you will see a 3D gamut comparison.
Both sRGB and Adobe RGB (1998) are linearised colour spaces where equal amounts of RGB produce gray. But Adobe RGB (1998) is able to define a large number of colours in the green and cyan range that sRGB cannot define.
If you cannot define colours at grid positions in the colour space you are converting from, you cannot define those colours at grid positions in the colour space you are converting into. You have to have the colours to begin with.
Normally, softproofing implies converting from a large normalised RGB working space such as Adobe RGB (1998) or PhotogamutRGB to a somewhat smaller output space, as a rule a hardcopy printing system of some sort.
In matching from a larger source space to a smaller destination space, there are some colours that cannot be matched directly, but also cannot be clipped as that would impact colour contrasts and hence the information content.
Gamut mapping is the art and science of preserving colour contrasts. Gamut mapping is not possible in matrix-based profiles, it presupposes LUT-based profiles. By definition, therefore, gamut mapping presupposes a type PRTR Printer profile as destination.

Why aren't my mac book pro and my iphone 4 compatible to eachother?

Look; When I connected my iphone 4 to my mom's macbook pro, itunes told me that I needed to update to itunes version 11.1 or later... well this macbookpro can not update to any newer version than the 10.6...
both the iphone and the macbook are running on their latest update avaliable.

So the main question is; What is wrong with apple?
I'm a fan of windows for a good reason! this mac book costed my mom's a small fortune and to my knowlege any window computer way older than this mac are compatible with my iphone.....

Book printing and paper orientation

Hi all,
I used to print DVD covers via custom book format for wedding DVDs. But since the last Aperture update it seems aperture does not print with the right orientation. Paper format is A4 portrait but the book page gets cut off because it printed landscape on the paper.
Any ideas?

As a work around I'm now printing the book nad save it as a PDF which I then print with "Preview". However, no one out there with this problem?

Why is there Intermittent Aperture DNG Problems?

I am having intermittent problems downloading DNG files from my Leica M8. Most of the files are brought in fine but there are always a couple of files that give an error message. These files however can be downloaded using Capture with no problems, and then they can be imported into Aperture without any problems.
Anyone else come across this? Anyone know what's going on?

I'm shooting with an M8 as well, no problems to report bringing in DNG's directly from the card. I did have issues with extreme III cards with Tiger and a card reader but I switched to the Ultra II which plug directly into the USB port.
It is good practice to format the cards after each download in the camera, also the M8 is a bit fussy about which cards you use and there have been reports of issues with some cards not on the recommended list here

Also I don't use the supplied USB cable for transfer but rather directly download from the card.

Why are there problems getting notification alerts and sounds in ipadv3. My settings are set exactly like my iPad 1 and all alerts and sounds appear but not on new iPad. Very frustrating. I have rebooted and reset several times. Hate to have to make A

Do you have system sounds muted? Check the button above your volume control on the right hand side of the iPad. If, when you change the button you see mute on your screen, you'll restore system sounds. If you see lock orientation, you can restore system sounds by double tapping your home button to bring up the task bar (most recently used apps). With your finger swipe those apps all the way to the right to reveal a mute icon on the left. Touch that icon and you'll restore system sounds.
Let us know if that was the issue.

Why is there no option to print in the toolbar options, useful components?

I'm not sure that previous versions have had this option either, but when on certain sites (i.e. banking, etc.) they don't always have a print option. Is there a way that this could be added to the toolbar options? Perhaps under useful components?

Why are there 2 'after effects', 14 and regular and which one is the best use? It seems a little crazy to use twice the storeage for the same program?

I up graded adobe cc last night and the cc app down loaded up-grades to my original cc apps, plus another app of each labeled 14. Why do we need two copies of the same app on our machines, and which one is the best to use. I hope adobe in not going down the same road as apple and screwing up the works. i still remember way back when adobe goofed it so bad I switched to final cut. Now apple has screwed up final cut and I am back to Premiere. I know we have huge drives now, but come on, why two bit eating monsters that do the same thing. Stan / Desert Wind Productions.

The "2014" versions are new versions of the software. It's like the difference between CS5 and CS6. The new one is (most of the time) significantly better. This isn't any weird screwup, it's just a new version.
You may want to keep the old version around for compatibility, client needs, safety, etc. However, it probably behooves you to use the current version for all of its new features, etc.
