Why is there extra storage used?

Firstly, my MacBook Air is showing that I have 44.1 GBs of free memory, however, the math of the used storage does not add up, there is approx 70GB of extra storage used, even summing just Apps and Backups is more than my MacBook's total 251GB Disk.
Secondly, I have no idea where that "212GBs" of apps come from, there are only 25GBs of apps in my Apps folder, System information does not reveal other apps that I might have unknowingly downloaded either. I do have a few apps that are ported from .exe but those don't take more than 10GBs total.
Thirdly, what is "Backups" and where can I find it, I would gladly remove some.
Forth, (I checked) my user home folder only uses about 120GB, where does the rest come from?
Fifth, isn't there supposed to be a column for "available" in the chart.
if anybody has had any similar issues and has found a solution, I'd gladly take advice.
I'm using a Mid-2012 13" 251GB Macbook Air, 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5 (Processor), 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 (Memory), running OS X Yosemite Ver. 10.10.3.
Model Identifier: MacBookAir5,2
Macintosh HD:

Thirdly, what is "Backups" and where can I find it, I would gladly remove some.
I recommend you don't. Read why: About Time Machine local snapshots - Apple Support
Forth, (I checked) my user home folder only uses about 120GB, where does the rest come from?
Everything else, for example, Applications, System, and other users' Home folders, if they exist.
Fifth, isn't there supposed to be a column for "available" in the chart.
No. It will just indicate "free" as yours does.
For more information read OS X: What is "other" space in About This Mac? - Apple Support
"Other" includes everything that is not audio, movies, photos, apps, or backups. It includes downloads, work products such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, Mail messages and their attachments, and OS X itself.

  • Why is there extra time at end of movie???

Just wondering why, on a couple of projects, I have extra time in the timeline?
The project is 1min 6 sec long but I can scroll to 5min 35sec. I have checked to see it there is an additional piece of footage or audio clip 'hidden' at the end...nope.,,,I've also checked to see if there is a 'black' frame at the ens and again, nope.
Just wondering how this will transfer back to the camera??? as 1:06 or as 5:35.
    Thank you for your input

    Hi mikex:
Did you split and trash any audio or video clips while you were making the movie that ended up in the trash?
If so, go ahead and empty the trash and save the movie.
Then close iMovie and reopen it.
    Did that help?

  • Why is there extra white space at the top of swf file?

I can't figure out how to get rid of extra white space in the browser at the top of a swf file. It looks fine when I preview the file, but when I do publish preview in flash/ try to incorporate in HTML, there's an extra 1/4" at top of window.

Do you have the html page (that you have the swf file embedded into) set so that there are no page margins? Your "body" tag should look like this…
    <body leftmargin="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" topmargin="0">

  • Why is there extra white space on below the navigation bar?

I am running Nightly 6.0a1, and for the past few days, there has been extra white space under the Navigation Toolbar, as though there is an extra empty toolbar. The only toolbar I have is the Navigation Toolbar. BTW, this happens w/ tabs on top and bottom. Here's a screenshot: [http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/cg2916/extraspace.png http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af162/cg2916/extraspace.png]

Do you see any toolbars listed in "Nightly > Options" that are visible but do have a check mark?

  • Why is there extra white space after exporting to JPEG?

After exporting an *.ai file to jpeg using  150 ppi and 5 for compression, I have extra white space below the artwork. This has happened in two files after exporting.

    Urthie,
What about the Artboard, is that aligned to the Pixel Grid (it is if the size is a whole number of points/pixels and one corner is at X=Y=0 or another set of integer values, otherwise not)?
    Edit: Cross posting.
Congratulations, some things are difficult to spot (and guess for others); your finding the solution is the best happy ending.

  • Why is there 2.7gb used for saved messages

Noticed my memory has been full so checked my usage and it says I have 2.7gb of saved messages......NO I DONT!!! What the heck how do I fix this ???!

Why do you believe that it is wrong?  A lot of people never delete their SMS/MMS/iMessage history.  Also, pictures sent via those services take up a good bit of space.
If you truly believe it is wrong, restore the device from the most recent backup.

  • Why is there extra white space around an imported image?

I had made a JPEG2000 format image sized at 119 pixels wide by 142 pixels tall. Went to convert it to a pdf file and Acrobat took the liberty of enlarging the images size to what I assume is the smallest size supported by the format.
Any ideas on how to resolve this without having to open and edit the pdf directly? Ya know, during export.
    Acrobat Version: XI Pro

The new Acrobat size is formatted at 1 inch by 1 inch (300px x 300px). Importing this new *.pdf file back into photoshop interestingly reduces this back to the original size, however, handling of the pdf when importing into say, InDesign, will retain the new size. This might be just be a media box, but I would rather change the formatting than adjust placement options every time.

  • Why is there extra space above google search results?

When I do a google search, an excessive amount of white space appears above the search results, requiring me to scroll down the page to see even the first choice. Only started happening today.

It's autopager. Don't do all the stuff above.

Sounds just the same and as bad with headphones/headset as from internal speaker. Others have reported this problem. Has a solution been found yet?

  • Photostream storage use

I am a bit confused about Photostream and storage use. Have search the communities, just to find out that there are a lot of different answers. I have also search Apple Support without any success, so here I go:
    Photostream on OS X:
The photos i Photostream are stored in iCloud. I have to save them or transfer them into iPhoto, before they use any storage?
    Photostream on AppleTV:
Just stream, they will never be downloaded or use any storage? They still be in iCloud?
    iOS:
Photos in Photostream use storage on my device, if I choose to look at them or using others shared Photostream?
If this i true, why the difference between storage use on the different devices?
(I am aware of, that photos taken on my iOS use storage in the Camera Roll, but if the pictures are transferred from another camera into my OS X, they still be appering in Photostream on my iOS)
I really appriciate an answer, preferably with a source.
    Best Regards

    Hi randers4
    thank you for your replay
    1. "OS X: Photo stream photos are streamed to iPhoto.  They can automatically be imported to your iPhoto library by checking Automatic Import in iPhoto>Preferences>Photo Stream."
Demands that you choose to do so.
    2. "Apple TV: Photo stream photos only stream to your Apple TV as it lacks internal storage to store photos.  They remain in iCloud for 30 days."
Yes, I understand that, but why can you stream from Apple TV, without downloading, and are forced to download on your iOS-device?
I´m sorry if I wasn´t clear in my question:
Why does Photostream on a iOS-device use storage automaticly, if OS X and Apple TV doesn't?
    Best Regards

  • Is there any way I can add extra storage to hold my Newsstand magazines?

Is there any way I can add extra storage to hold my Newsstand magazines?

Thanks for that.  It is what I expected.
There are lots of WIFI and flash drives that you can plug in but, as far as I can see,  they are only useful for holding stuff pre-loaded from a PC/MAC, and can only be used via a special app.
Let bus look forward to the day that Apple give us a memory extension socket.

  • Why was there over ten thousand file in my "All My Files" on my new MBP. I'm very new at using ICloud. I don't understand syncing vs time vs time vs syncing! I simply have not idea how to manage my file now.

Why is there over ten thousand file in my "All My Files" on my new MBP. I'm very new at using ICloud. I don't understand syncing vs time vs time vs syncing! I simply have not idea how to manage my files now. I read short comments & how to's in the support sections, but nothing I've read so far explains"best practices" or turning iCloud off to get a grip on managing files. I have 250gb fast storage on the MBP itself, and 200gb in the ICloud, one would thing that's enough. The files seem too be multiplying like rabbits. IPhoto's Faces has created hundereds of "somethings" not sure what. I am sure I am very frustrated! Please comment with kindness.

Yes,I am confused. To say its just another drive is a "buzz statement".
OK, for example. If I download a document, song, or photo from ICloud, as I understand, it goes to Download in Finder. If I want to move it to a local folder of my choice on the solid state drive in my new MBP, does a copy always stay in ICloud? How do you housekeep? I have always  used to a physical drive. What is different about the mind set.  I used ICloud to store the contents of my old MBP. Once I download all the files I need, should I turn off ICloud and manage the file locally? I don't like the automatic movement of files when I don't understand the locations.
    Nope, you don't understand it.
If you download a song from the iTunes cloud storage (which is not iCloud) it goes into the iTunes music folder (generally to a subfolder therein)
If you download a document from the iCloud drive it will go wherever you chose to put it.
If you download a photo from the iCloud Photo library it will also go wherever you choose to put it.*
If you move something you have not copied it, if you want to keep a copy on the iCloud drive and in a local folder, you would copy, not move it.
There is no 'automatic' movement, you decide what to store on the iCloud drive (exactly like any other drive) and what to remove.
The iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder, you use it just like any other, copy/paste, save, delete etc.
You can turn the iCloud drive off whenever you like, download the content to a local drive first.
    * Because the iCloud drive appears as a folder in Finder there is in fact no need to ever download anything to your Mac, everything on the drive is already on your Mac.

  • HT4847 None of my iOS devises show no or very little storage used. Why am i getting this message. Ron

I received the iCloud email saying my storage is full.  None of my devises show any or very little storage used.  Why am I getting this type of email?

your home page to get into your Web site should be index.html (for Mac) or index.htm  (on PC)
You can name it something other than index, but will be harder to find.  when you create the subjects and link to them, they can can be named anything with the html extension  Or if your using PHP end in .php. There is a Microsoft type asp or aspx but your hosting service has to set up using windows server system.
My hosting service use a Linux server normally but can convert Windows for a Fee.  UNIX Linux has no concept of asp or aspx.

  • Using older 500GB TC with new 1TB TC for extra storage

I recently upgraded to the duel channel 1 TB Time Capsule and was wondering if I can use the older single channel 500GB Time Capsule purely as extra storage on my network. I just hate to let the old TC collect dust when there is valuable storage on it...
I'm concerned that if I connect the 500GB TC to the new one with an ethernet cable, the WIFI functions on the old TC may interfere or confuse the the computers on my network trying to connect wirelessly to the older TC. I'd prefer not to join the older TC to the network wirelessly.
    Questions:
    1. If I connect the older TC to the new one using ethernet cable, will the WIFI functionality of the old one automatically turn off or will it turn on and search for devices to connect to?
    2. Should I connect the two using ethernet, which I understand is a much faster connection, or do I need to connect the two using USB to use the older TC purely as additional storage?
    3. Is there anyway to manually turn off the WIFI functionality of the older TC to act as an external drive only?
    4. If the WIFI cannot be turned off, will it interfere with the signals of the new TC? And do I have to join it to the network at this point or will the ethernet or USB connections override and shutdown the WIFI?
    5. Will this work at all without any trouble or do I need to invest in a simple external hard drive at some point and connect using USB or ethernet to gain additional network storage as the TC documentation indicates I can easily do?
    Any guidance is appreciated!
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions!
+1. If I connect the older TC to the new one using ethernet cable, will the WIFI functionality of the old one automatically turn off or will it turn on and search for devices to connect to?+
If you previously had the older TC setup to broadcast a wireless network, then it will continue to do so unless you set the Wireless Mode to "Off" in AirPort Utility.
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Wireless tab (just below icons) > Wireless Mode = Off.
Also, if you are connecting the older TC to the new TC using ethernet, you would run an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the new TC to the WAN (circle icon) port on the old TC. The old TC would need to configured as a "bridge"
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet Icon > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode).
+2. Should I connect the two using ethernet, which I understand is a much faster connection, or do I need to connect the two using USB to use the older TC purely as additional storage?+
Use ethernet configured as above. USB will not work in this type of application.

    See #1 above.
+4. If the WIFI cannot be turned off, will it interfere with the signals of the new TC? And do I have to join it to the network at this point or will the ethernet or USB connections override and shutdown the WIFI?+

You haven't mentioned whether you plan to use the TC for Time Machine backups or other file storage. Can you clarify on how you plan to use the old TC?

  • Can time capsule just be used as extra storage and not back up

I recently purchased time capsule 3TB can i use the time capsule as extra storage only and not as a back up?  My plan was to use TC to save all my itunes purchases (music, movies etc)?

Sure, it is possible but the following issue exists..
There is no easy backup. If you plug in a USB drive, the TC can only do a whole backup. It takes forever and with 3TB man the wait is going to be eternal as it has to write everything every time.. there is no incremental backup. If you copy the files over the network to another location, you are no better off, as you still need a second storage somewhere. And it has to be copied over the network to do it.
So think carefully as a TC has a single drive which can die any day.. and will for sure one day.. what you will lose on that day will depend on how carefully you have done backups which will require your attention.
