Why is there such a big block of space being taken up by backups on my computer's hard drive?

I'm about to leave for college, and I've gotten pretty much everything set up on my 13 inch MBP. I recently opened 'About This Mac' and went to storage to view how my storage was being used. I noticed the wierdest thing; that is, that I have a supposed 73 GB of 'Backups' on my MBP. I don't recall ever backing anything up, and I went through and deleted all mobile backups. I've also noticed that I have actually 27 GB of music and it says I only have 4 GB, so I know there are other faults too. I'm just hoping that the 'Backups' being displayed are really backups, and that maybe I can delete them and get more space on my MBP. If anyone knows how I could find these 'Backups' please let me know.

I was using about this mac>more info>storage
for any others having this problem, it's referring to local snapshots.
to disable local snapshots enter this command in the terminal:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
then turn off time machine and restart your computer. You will find that all local snapshots have been deleted.
Cheers!

And you neglected to add "for many years."
Some of mine have acted quirky at times, but overall, never really any trouble. And never had to replace one of mine. I just take it that's because they're so complicated; just look at some of the stuff we put up with from computers and just throw up our hands and say "oh well, it's a computer, we'll probably never know why it started doing this, or stopped doing that."
If someone is burning a lot of discs, I'd recommend an external or one built into a Mac Pro or other desktop bay.

When recording a Video demo slide in Captivate 8, pressing the [END] key takes more than a minute to stop the recording. Why is there such a lag? Additionally, the software I record experiences terrible lag times. For instance, It may take 15 seconds to display a 2-digit number I typed into a blank field. the same software has no lag issues when I'm not recording it.

Yes and no. The CPTX file is on my PC. Our software that I'm making the demo of is on the network. but I'm not the "IT Guy" so I can't provide specifics; however, I work at a computer software company and we probably have more servers than employees. The network hardware is kept current. I've been making similar tutorials for 10 years and haven't run into this issue until switching to the subscription Captivate.

You don't need to have Lightroom 3 and 4 installed on your computer to install Lightroom 5.  Just install Lightroom 5 and input your serial number for 3 in the previous version box and your serial number for 5 in the upgrade box.

    Hi Glenn,
You need to Authorize your Mom's computer to your iTunes sign on. Sign on to iTunes, then go to Store at the top of the screen, and select Authorize this Computer.
Then you can download your purchases from your iTunes library by going to the iTunes Store (the one in the sidebar), Music, and then under Quick Links, Purchased.
Once the Purchased window comes up, select "Not on this Computer", and then select All Songs. Your purchased songs will display with a cloud next to them, and you can download them selectively or "Download All" (lower right-hand corner).
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers,

  • Why are the JPEGS on my computer's hard drive all of a sudden now blank?

The JPEGS on my computer's hard drive are now blank (it reads 0kb, and the thumbnail is missing) and when I go to open it in Windows Photo Viewer it gives me an error saying that it doesn't exist. I noticed that this happens to almost all the photos I edited in Lightroom 5. I shot a whole season of football last year, all in JPEG format, and with my keepers I went ahead and edited them in Lightroom and now they're blank. I have never moved my photos anywhere. I shot the game last November, created the folder for that game, and that's it. I go almost a year later to print one of them out for my portfolio and the file is missing! Lightroom can show the photo but I can't make any adjustments in the development module because the file is blank on my computer. The weird part is that the thumbnail is there, the correct image number is there, and when I click to show in Explorer through Lightroom it pulls up the right JPEG, so the location is correct in Lightroom, just no thumbnail image and no full size image when I go to open it using Windows Photo Viewer. I checked other games I shot and it happened to almost every game.

If you have the photos on your camera cards, then obviously you can simply copy them to the appropriate locations.
There are Lightroom plug-ins that can retrieve the preview that Lightroom uses, but these will be smaller and lower in quality than the original. Maybe one of our plug-in experts can suggest the proper plug-in.
If the hard disk is really going bad, as I speculated, you would definitely want to get it replaced. If that is the case, you don't want to keep using it. You might want to run some disk diagnostics on it.

You can't do a backup of icloud to an external drive.  In fact, does your post have anything to do with icloud (you're in the icloud forum)?
What kind of "system backup" are you doing?  Are you using Time Machine?

  • HT201290 why is QuickTime Player not working when i try to open this files i got in a external hard drive some one els lend me ???

i have a macbook that was resantly upgrade we running Yosemite 10.9 OS and the external hard drive is fairly current brand name WD capacity 500GB with 147GB free lots of its contents are QuickTime Player videos that will like to open some other media is available in different format and is working properly, i have download a more current version of QuickTime Player and it sound better at list sound like it is going to star playing but it don't... so please if some one can help me with some answers will be real appreciate , thank you kindly looking forward to hear from you is my first time asking questions about apple it feels a bit like a shoot in the dark !

Is the friend's external drive where you said these files are, correctly formatted
for use with Mac OS X, or is it set up for use solely with a Windows format?
If you copy one of the QuickTime files into a folder, in your computer and try
to run it from there, does it work at that point? It may not. Could be the drive
you borrowed from a friend has some other issue; perhaps creator account
and permissions may also be limited by how the content was added there.
There is way too much missing information for me to guess, but I wonder about
how the hardware was set up and if the files are actually available to your Mac.
The QuickTime support page itself should be a portal to more information...

The above link is part of this larger section:

Perhaps someone will see this ASC discussion thread later in the day (2AM here)
and maybe can offer a more direct reply. There are several articles in Apple Support
database for applications and other items (such as QuickTime) & the support site is
searchable. Sometimes the database is hard to find exact articles or topics, though.
Hopefully the issue is not too difficult to determine the cause...

  • If my MacBook won't start, is there a way to access my data without replacing the battery? Someone mentioned removing the hard drive?

I'm assuming that my MacBook won't start because it's been spilled on... It's happened once before and when I brought it in, all that was needed was a battery replacement. I have a brand new MacBook Pro and all I really want is my pictures, videos, music & other documents from my old MacBook.. Is there a way of getting all of that without buying a new battery, and then using Mavericks to switch over everything? A friend suggested that I just get all of it from the hard drive, but I don't really know much about that. Help?

If you can take the computer to somewhere or someone who has a known-good battery, and if the MacBook is dry, you could tell in quick order if a replacement battery would be worth it. Likely, you won't have been as fortunate more than once; electricity and water don't mix well, and short circuited or fried electronics result.
    {There used to be a way to access one Mac from another if you could get the bad one to boot into Target Disk mode, but Intel-based macs didn't always work; they both needed FireWire ports & correct cable. If In an enclosure, you may be able to use a migration assistant utility.}
An authorized service tech with Apple certification in portable computers should be able to remove the internal hard disk drive, install it into an external enclosure, & test it, for a fee; once in an enclosure it may be accessed to see if the hard drive's data files on the drive, or at least sees them. Labor + parts?
Once the hard disk drive is removed, your user files would still have whatever account password protection needed to access them, but there are ways to migrate data from drives into another computer; in some cases the information on this may be tilted toward using a device you don't have, such as a Time Machine. If the data had been backed up on a Time Machine, it may have been possible to get it from that device using a method available in a Support article and put directly into another Mac.
If the computer has failed due to contact with moisture or a drink pouring over it, more than once, it may require more than a new battery to see if it'd work well enough to run and get data from its hard disk drive. You may pay quite a bit of money to have someone do anything at all.
How long ago did the MacBook get wet again? If several weeks ago, it may be dry inside. But may be damaged and the main logic board short-circuited or toast. So, it may not work even with the MagSafe attached due to other damages beyond a new battery. That could be a waste of money to buy one.
There are repair guides at http://ifixit.com which may help you determine if you can extract the HDD from the failed MacBook, but even then you'd have to install it into a suitable USB enclosure to gain access to data. Some drive enclosures already have a hard disk drive inside, so try and get one that would work with the MacBook's SATA hard disk drive, and with no HDD installed. One less thing to do.
So I know only enough about it to be dangerous.
And to troubleshoot the old MacBook may not
be worth the cost, if logicboard now is toasted.
Maybe someone else can say it direct w/ less words? LOL
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I have just bought a 16gb Ipad Mini retina . Is there a way of extending saving a document or photo to a SD card or external hard drive

    Hi
I am a complete novice and just bought my first Apple product a Ipad Mini Retina 16gb . On reflection if I had been wiser ( and/or  richer!) I would have bought the 32gb versi instead for recording audio ,  storing photo's and documents .
But  I have ton make do with what I have got so Is there a way ( a work a round)  of saving these files  instead where capacity is a problem on a SD card or external hard drive using the lighting connector ?
    Thanks

  • Why does my Mac ask for my password when I try to make a change on my external hard drive with Time Machine?

I recently formatted the hard drive to do a fresh install of Mavericks on my Macbook Pro Retina. I then formatted my Western Digital 2 TB External Hard Drive for Time Machine. I then began storing others files and folders on the external hard drive along side the TIme Machine Backup folder. Everytime I added a folder or changed a foler name it asked for my password.
This has never happened to me before using any other OSX.
I apologize if this has been resolved before, I'm new to the communities and have yet to find a solution.

It is not a good idea to be storing other Stuff on your Time Machine drive. You may need an additional separate hard drive for those things.
Once you tell Time Machine to use a Drive, Time Machine owns the Drive. You (as a User) do not have permission to put things there. If you insist, it will do it, but wants your Admin password to do it.

  • Why does time machine make a second/different backup after new installing a hard drive?

    Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster...
after having to install a new hard drive on my MacBook Pro, the new Time Machine backups are not recognising the original/older backups on the external hard drive connected via network router and has created a new/second backup caller 'xxx Mac Book Pro 1' instead of updating/reading the orginal 'xxx Mac Book Pro backup'?
Does anyone know why it did this? and more importantly how do i make it recgonise the original and stop making the secondary copy?
    Thanks!

  • Why does my I Tunes play only some of my library when it can't access the external hard drive from which I imported some of the music? My esternal hard drive has been corrupted, but I    thought I Tunes would have "saved" songs I dragged to it.

Some of my ITunes library came from CDs, some from an external hard drive with songs  in it.  My external hard drive went bad, which I wouln't have thought would have affected my Itunes library or the songs I had previously imported to it from the external drive.  But now the Itunes cannot locate many of those songs. Is there some process of importing/saving that is different when you import from CD? Hope someone can help.....MN

    Hi MNinPungo,
When adding music to iTunes from another location (for example, an external hard drive), iTunes can either make a local copy of the file in the iTunes Library or create a pointer to the original file in the original location, depending on the preferences you have set. You may find the following article helpful:
    Add to Library
So you can access content quickly, iTunes indexes all music, audio book, and video files that you add to iTunes. This index is called the iTunes library. When you add content to the library, iTunes adds an entry for each audio or movie file to your index. The files could be in your Home folder, somewhere else on your hard drive, on an external hard disk, or on another computer that you're accessing through file sharing.
To add files to your iTunes library, you can use these options:
Drag files from the Finder to the appropriate icon on the left side of the iTunes window.
Choose File > Add to Library (on Windows, choose Add File to Library or Add Folder to Library) and select the song or folder that you want to add.
iTunes adds entries to your iTunes library for the selected files and copies the files to your iTunes Music folder (if you selected that option in the Advanced pane of iTunes preferences).
