Why is this file so darn big?

I needed to pull some video off a dvd. I used Toast and the file was 3.8 gig. When I exported the video to a DV quicktime file to open it with iMovie, it grew to a whopping 20 gig. Why is that? Should I convert the dv to a quicktime movie? Or do something else? Thanks. . . .Jim C

When you converted the video from the DVD to DV, the process involved creates a bigger file that has more "potential" quality. i.e. the DV format is higher quality than the compressed DVD data. Unfortunately you don't get to enjoy any of that potential quality. The data that gets converted is to DV is still the compressed DVD quality.
It's the inverse of taking a DV movie made in iMovie and creating a DVD. The massive iMovie file gets converted to much smaller, compressed and lower quality DVD data.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
David

  • Why the db file is so big?

    hello,now i use BDB as my database;
    pdb->open(NULL, m_dbName, NULL, DB_QUEUE, DB_CREATE, 0);
    now, there have two processes , one is FEP, the other is DP
    FEP write 10000 datas to DB_QUEUE one second;
    DP read 10000 datas from DB_QUEUE one second;
    after the two processes run one hour, the db file become so big,
    the size of db file is 1,425,796KB ,but there is no record in db file;
    why the db file is so big?
    the db file will become little automatic?
    do you have some APIs to make the db file little?
    thank you!

    Hello,
    Based on your description, it sounds like you didn't assign a queue extent size when you created the database.
    From the BDB Reference Guide, see the section on [Selecting a Queue Extent Size|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17076_02/html/programmer_reference/rq_conf.html#am_conf_extentsize]. It sounds like the behavior that you are looking for is the ability to automatically delete queue extents once they become empty. This feature should do what you're looking for. Refer to the C API Guide ( here ) on how to define a queue extent.
    If you do not want to use Queue extents for some reason, another option would be to call truncate() on the database. However, that will result in deleting any records that might be in the database as well as truncating it.

  • Why is this file locked (man chflags), does it need to be, and is it safe to unlock it?

    Why is this file locked (man chflags), does it need to be, and is it safe to unlock it?
    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Enterprise/Resources/Resource_3_1.db
    Type this into a terminal in OS X, the above file appears to have a flag set to lock.
    x-man-page://chflags

    <the-sound-of-crickets>
    The reason I'm asking, we have a bunch of computers we inherited that have some permissions issues within each user's respective home directory ("~"). The issue effects Acrobat Pro X's ability to launch ("Internal error occurred") since it tries to get access files/folders it doesn't have access to when the user launches. Recursively setting ownership to the respective user fixes the problem (and follows Apple's guidelines). However, that one file appears to have the unix file lock set (man chflags). So we are using a pre-installation script on our push policy to loop through every home directory. It appears the above file is the only one that won't let us change permissions.

    It is NOT the same vi!!! You need to familiarize yourself with dataflow, LabVIEW does NOT execute left to right, any part can execute if all inputs have data.
    In your particular case, the "file info" will execute at the same time you are building the file path. In addition, you are measuring the size of the stripped path and not of the new file. Try execution highlighting!
    To fix your code:
    You need to get the "file info" from the path AFTER you add the new filename.
    Use the error cluster to enforce proper execution order as in my example. WIre the error out of "close" to the error in of "File info". Now the "File info" must wait until all inputs have data, which can only happen after "close" has completed.
    All clear?
    LabVIEW Champion . Do more with less code and in less time .

  • Why is the file size very big when I add captive runtime?

    I have a game that is 2.56 MB. When I package it up for a captive runtime apk it becomes 12.2 MB. This is very reasonable, but my problem is that when I add this apk on my phone through debugging, the size of the game jumps from 12.2 MB to 30.7 MB! I am using Air 3.9 and I don't understand why it is that big, can anyone help me please!

    IPA and APK are .zip files in disguise. Your app is simply unzipping all or a portion of itself when it is installed, depending on OS. For example one of mine is 35MB (APK) and it goes to 50.2MB after install every time.
    The captive runtime has little to do with it besides it's just one more compressed item. If you added any other random ~10MB of assets instead of captive runtime, depending on the content you'd end up with around the same size app anyhow.

  • Why is this file so large?

    I recorded a slide show in Keynote 08 and exported it to a medium sized Quicktime movie. The file size is 5.5 MB
    I then extracted the audio track and edited it in another app (Sound Edit) and saved it as AIFF. (4.8 MB)
    I opened the AIFF in QT (7.6.4) selected all and added it to the QT movie. The file plays as it should and the sound is better but the file is now 39.7 MB.. How come adding 4.8 to 5.5 comes to 39.7? and what might I do about it?

    The decisions will depend upon your ultimate goal for the video. Are you doing this for a web page, for viewing on a projection screen, on a computer? What is the nature of the video (real life, animation?). Generally the goal is the best quality image and sound possible, but it s always a trade-off with file size (and bandwidth if putting on a web page). If you're making something for playing on an ipod then you don't need the same image size that might end up on a projection screen and can save a lot of size that way.
    I can say for a start that AIFF is usually not the best choice for audio format if size is critical. AIFF is not compressed so it will take up roughly ten times the amount of space that a compressed format (MP3, AAC/MP4audio). If you started off with a compressed format and then convert to AIFF you will not regain what was lost when the sound was compressed.
    I don't know all the Quicktime formats. I haven't actually made a Quicktime video in quite a while. I use other tools. My copy of "Quicktime Pro" is about 15 years old, although it still can access many of the codecs the new version can.

  • Trying to find answers for the question "Why is this file type blocked from being uploaded into SharePoint"

    At least once a month - sometimes much more frequently - I get calls from users asking why the file extension they "need" to upload to SharePoint is blocked.
    Most recently, it was a Microsoft Access database that the user was attempting to upload to a document library. Before that, it was a shortcut link (*.url). And so on.
    Is there a reference document which goes over the reasons why specific file types are blocked?
    Thanks!

    Each blocked file format has it's own reasons for not being allowed to be stored on a SharePoint library.
    Some of them are blocked because they would be processed by SharePoint Servers during the upload/download sequences, thus, possibly corrupting the system ( like dll files ). Others would cause Crawl to break ( url files ).
    The Access database files are blocked for two valid reasons. First, because saving "live" to those files using Windows explorer window ( WebDAV ) doesn't work. Second because SharePoint product managers want us to use SharePoint lists instead.
    And it does makes sense.
    If you're in the middle of a migration from file servers to a SharePoint solution, your people could use these situations to stop and think about it for a little:
    Really ? Now that we have SharePoint, couldn't we do things a little bit differently ?

  • Why does this AppleScript cause a big delay in Mavericks?

    Hello,
    I use FileMaker for my database needs. I have been using an AppleScript to create a calendar event from FM to my Calendar using Apple Calendar. This has worked flawlewssly in Mac oSX 10.7 and 10.8. Every since Mavericks, the script still works (creating no error) but takes about 1 minute to complete. The funny thing is that if I run the script from the AS editor, it works just fine. The FileMaker does have access to my calendar in the security area.
    Any thoughts?
    Here is the script that is invoked:
    launch application "Calendar"
    repeat until application "Calendar" exists
              "delay 1"
    end repeat
    tell application "Calendar"
              set my_event to make new event at end of events of calendar "Test Calendar" with properties {description:"Test description here", summary:"Summary Text here", location:"location information here", start date:date "Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 10:00:00 AM", end date:date "Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 12:00:00 PM", allday event:false}
    end tell
    Thanks!
    Stephen

    set myCal to "MyLocalendar"
    tell application "Calendar"
              set l to the title of every calendar
              if myCal is not in l then
                        set n to uid of (make new calendar with properties {name:myCal})
              end if
    end tell

    I'm unable to email PDF attachments, this has started in the last 2 weeks - any clues why as other file types are sending?

    Greetings,
    That is rather strange. Attachments are attachments.  The big difference between what will send and what won't is usually either who you are sending it to (wrong email address) or how big the attachment is (most email providers have a limit to the total message size between 10 MB and 20 MB).
    -- What happens when you say you are "unable to email PDF attachments"?  What error message do you get?
    -- Are you sending these emails using the Mail program?
    -- What is the file size of the PDF you are trying to send?
    -- What happens if you compress the PDF before you email it (Highlight the PDF on the desktop and then go to File > Compress) ?
    -- What happens if you send the PDF to yourself?
    Cheers.

    Relax, they weren't converted to PDF.
    You can tell by right clicking ANY of them and choosing "Properties". You'll see there that they're STILL .xls or .xlsx files. The "association" has changed and Windows now indicates that they open with Reader, which isn't right.
    Where it says "Open With" under the General tab, you can click "Change" and re-select Excel as the default app to open thim.

    My MacBookPro with Mountain Lion seems to be making copies of files in my download folder.  Why is this happening and how do I stop it?

    This issue has nothing to do with Time Machine or local snaphsots. No built-in feature of OS X does what you describe.
    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
    These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
    Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
    Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
    Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
    Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
    Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copy-and-paste as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
    This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
    Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
    Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
