Why is URL expansion no longer working in Safari 6?

In Safari 5 and earlier, typing a single word in the URL bar and entering it would automatically check the local domain, then that word with .com appended. This made for quick access to local and .com websites. With the unified bar in Safari 6, this functionality is gone. While I do find that to be a significant problem, the bigger problem is that it also changes how it handles entries with a slash. Here's an example:  Enter apple/ca/support in the bar at top and press enter.  Safari 5 behaviour: Expands to apple.com/ca/support automatically and loads the page. Safari 6 behaviour: Searches for this term in the default search engine. You then have to click on the search result to load the page.  The first behaviour is clearly the more logical and efficient, even if you don't change the no-slash behaviour. I use this kind of abbreviation multiple times daily. While I understand why Apple has gone with the unified URL+Search bar (even though I don't like it), there is no reason why a search term with slashes and no spaces should not be expanded as before.  Is there a defaults setting that will let me change that behaviour back, or is this removed functionality? Since OmniWeb and Opera both support the Safari 5 behaviour, I can always use those browsers, but I would prefer to have Safari behave as it previously did.

Here are some suggestions for getting the best results from this site.
Create a user profile that accurately reflects the type of hardware you're using and your version of OS X, or include that information in your first message.
Give details of the problem. A statement such as "it doesn't work" conveys no information. If it did work, you wouldn't be here. Instead, you should post something like this: "I did A; I was expecting B; but I got C instead." Include the complete text of any error messages you saw and where you saw them: in an application window, a CrashReporter window, a log, or whatever. Also include the steps you’ve taken yourself, if any, to try to resolve the issue. If the problem is of recent origin, did you make any changes to your setup just before you first noticed it? Is the problem reproducible or intermittent? That is, does it always manifest itself when you take a certain action, or only at unpredictable times?
Before posting, ask yourself whether it’s likely that you are the the only person ever to have had this problem. If not, search the discussions for answered questions similar to yours. If you found any pertinent information, but it didn't help, include details.
