Why is USB so slow?

I have two external drives connected to my iMac, one is FW and the other USB. I am using both to backup via SuperDuper! It takes about two hours via FW and three times that via USB (2.0). I am backing up about 220 gigs of data. Is there any reason the USB is so much slower, or is it something in my connections? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
iMac 24-inch; MacBook Pro, various iPods including video   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

From the Wikipedia articles on the two specs;
Though Hi-Speed devices are commonly referred to as "USB 2.0" and advertised as "up to 480 Mb/s", not all USB 2.0 devices are Hi-Speed. Hi-speed devices typically only operate at half of the full theoretical (60 MBytes/s) data throughput rate. The maximum rate currently (2006) attained with real devices is about half, 30 MB/s.[4] Most hi-speed USB devices typically operate at much slower speeds, often about 3MB/s overall, sometimes up to 10-20 MB/s.
FireWire 400 can transfer data between devices at 100, 200, or 400 Mbit/s data rates (the actual transfer rates are 98.304, 196.608, and 393.216 Mbit/s, ie 12.288, 24.576 and 49.152MBytes per second respectively). These different transfer modes are commonly referred to as S100, S200, and S400.

  • USB running slow

Help! The USB my MacBook is running very slow, around 1.1 speeds if that. My iPhone fails to sync and drops the usb connection every time I try to sync, I am unable to get any music loaded. My TimeMachine drive also runs very slow. I was able to restore the phone without a problem (failed twice on the white MacBook) on my unibody MacBook, but restoring my backup and syncing my apps took forever and failed multiple times. Any ideas as to why my USB would be running so slow? Software issue I hope as it is not under warranty any longer!

Did you try another cable? Process of elimination...

  • Why not USB??

    Hi --
So it's widely understood that USB external drives are no good for editing on a Mac. Borrowed quote from an earlier post that I found:
"Recognize that USB is not recommended for use as an editing drive - this is why: while capturing is a relatively simple 3.6MB/sec write, editing involves multiple file reads at the same time which requires a much higher sustained through put - a sustained effort that USB can not reliably provide. If your editing is simple cuts only with one track of video and not very long, you may get away with it but the odds are decidedly against it working without dropped frames, stuttering and so on."
But if thats the case, why does USB work fine with PC edit systems??
I was wondering if anybody can explain once and for all why PC's can edit with USB external HDs but Macs can't? I've searched a lot but cant find the answer to this..

This information is from the APTS book "Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System" Page 386:
    USB
The Universal Serial Bus is in many ways the successor to the older Apple Desktop Bus: a serial bus for the connections of various accessories, like mice, keyboards, and even storage devices. USB drives, like FireWire drives, aren't USB-native, but use bridges between ATA or SATA drives and the USB connection running back to the Mac.
USB 1.0 and 1.1, the original versions, top out at 12 Mb/second, for a piddling 1.5 Mb/second transfer speed. Hi-Speed USB 2.0 runs at a more respectable 480 Mb/second, giving it 20 percent more bandwidth than FW400, at least in theory.
In practice, USB suffers from being a CPU-driven protocol; the controlling computer has to be much more involved in data transfers over USB than over FireWire. Thus, sustained transfer rates tend to be slightly lower on Hi-Speed USB 2.0 than on FW400. And that's in the best case, when a fast computer is being used and isn't doing anything else; if the Mac is busy doing other things (like rendering a real-time effect and displaying the output in the Canvas), performance falls off even more.
Hi-Speed USB suffers just like other multiple-speed buses do: plug in one 12 Mb device, and the entire bus slows down to 12 Mb. Fortunately, each USB 2.0 port on the Mac has its own internal hub, so you can segregate 12 Mb and 480 Mb devices from each other just by plugging them into different ports.
USB is fine for offline data backups and for moving projects from system to system, but it's simply not efficient enough to be the interface of choice for media drives. Although some brave souls have made Hi-Speed USB 2.0 drives work for DV editing without seeing too many dropped frames, it's just not robust enough for video work, especially not when FireWire is available.

  • Why the video is slow and stutter on the viewer clip?

Why the video is slow and stutter when I drag the mouse on the cursor to check from left to right?
I just upgraded to imac 20" and I had never had this problem with my old mac. The old mac seemed to be smoother than this one.
The only difference was my 1 TB external hardrive is linkup using USB 2.0 this time round since I've not purchased the Firewire 800 yet. Does using USB 2.0 cause this problem?

I noticed something from my previous iMac. When I drag the cursor from left to right, there is no sound when I'm dragging. Thus, that makes me think that the absence of audio produce smoother flow. How do I disable the audio while I'm working on the viewer then?

  • Downloaded Mountain Lion on my iMac.  Why is it so slow opening up from sleep and taking so long for the wireless mouse to engage?

Downloaded Mountain Lion on my iMac.  Why is it so slow opening up from sleep and taking so long for the wireless mouse to engage?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Why does Photoshop keep slowing down?

I've been using Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 for two years now, and for some reason it seems to have the problem of slowing down after using it for a while, so if I'm working on a project I have to keep closing it and reopening it to get it fast again. It's weird because it doesn't seem to matter how much stuff is on the canvas, it's just how much I've drawn and hit undo and erased or did anything, After like 5 minutes of straight work it just gets too slow for me to work in, like when I switch tools or change the color it takes a couple seconds to respond. So literally every couple minutes I have to restart Photoshop and open the same file.
What's really odd is that sometimes Photoshop will work perfectly fine and stay lightning fast for hours. Like, for the last couple of months it's been 100% fine, but since a few days ago it started to have this "slowing down" issue again. Every couple months it seems to decide to be perfectly fine or just really annoying. I didn't change anything in my computer.
It can't be my computers specs or my settings in Photoshop, but I will tell you all of that anyway.
    OS - Windows 7 64-bit
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0GHz
    RAM - 12GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz

There is no malware scanner running, in fact I have tried closing out all other applications and unnecessary processes to help improve performance. No luck.
Also, my post actually wasn't quite finished, but my internet shut off on me last night and I guess that just automatically posted whatever I had done before then. What's even better is that the forums won't allow me to edit it. What great features!
Anyway, here's the FULL spec sheet of my computer...
    OS - Windows 7 64-bit
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0GHz
    RAM - 12GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz
    GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 1GB
    Storage - 1x 128GB SSD (OS installed on), 1x 750GB HDD, 1x 160GB HDD
I have the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5.1 Extended, installed on the SSD. Here's the settings I have in the preferences:
    Memory Usage - 100%
    Scratch Disks - All 3, SSD 1st, 750GB HDD 2nd, 160GB HDD 3rd
    History States - 100
    Cache Levels - 8
    Cache Tile Size - 1028K
I have fiddled with these settings and restarted Photoshop countless times. In the end it's the same exact result: Photoshop slows down after a few minutes of work and I have to restart it. I have about 50GB free on the SSD, 150GB free on the 750GB, and about 140GB free on the 160GB.
I don't understand why it gets so slow even when my RAM usage only makes it up to about 45%. Why doesn't it just utilize ALL of the memory like I told it to?
I've tried setting cache to 1, 2, and 4, same result. Cache tile size to all the different settings, same result. History states to an extremely low level like 10, same result. I just don't understand why Photoshop is doing this, especially because it decides to speed up on its own every couple of months...

    Hi!
I have a mac mini and a pc.
I sometimes think that my mac mini is so slow when I use Internett.
There is a norwegian page that I have tested it on... and the answere was alarmin:
My pc had a connection of: about 4000 kbit/s connected to wireless and airport express... and about 6000 with out wireless.... hmmmm I tested it many times...
My mac mini (which is in my livingroom) had a connection at only 919 kbit/s????
why is it sooooooo slow???? can I do anything to speed it up????

    Great Henry,
That was great advice, I have been unofficially been working in WiFi for my school and this is one of the most clear responces I've seen from discussions. Anyways some things that I do believe that you forgot was cordless phones 2.4Ghz range, microwave ovens, DSS (Direct Satellite Service), Electrical things like power lines, Other airport/WiFi stations, and moving objects made of metal between the computer and base station. Those are all broad things. Usually things like that won't effect it but it really depends. For the cordless phone you just need to change the channel on the airport. I hope that helps, Good Luck!

PS I have found that sometimes its just plain wackey, usually cause of wires and such things in the walls
