Why is Verizon charging $50 more than Apple?

Somebody care to explain to me exactly why Verizon is charging $50 more than Apple themselves for each model of the Verizon iPhone?
Seriously, I'd love to hear the reasoning.
I'm upgrade ineligible but use Macs for my business so I've accepted that I can't get an early upgrade, even though VZW has selectively chosen who they'll give discounts or rebates to. We've been with Verizon for 10+ years and are loyal customers. Regardless, I've accepted it and have planned on paying full retail since day one.
So rather than whining and saying that it's a slap in the face that they won't give me an early upgrade- I won't. WHAT I will say though is that charging $50 more per phone when they know full and well that the vast majority of buyers at full retail WILL be upgrade ineligible, loyal customers, now THAT is a slap in the face.
Think $50 isn't much when you're already spending X amount on the retail price of the phone? Consider that when pricing the 16GB at $649 through Verizon and THEN adding sales tax, you're not far off at all from the 32GB version via Apple.
I don't mind spending a few extra $'s if I'm going to get something from it. I don't like spending another $50 because the corporate suits say "Let's charge a little more because upgrade ineligible customers WILL pay whatever we want and LIKE IT".
If you want the Verion iPhone bad enough, vote with your wallets, give your money DIRECTLY to Apple and save your $50.
Or maybe someone here, or better yet, a Verizon rep can enlighten me on why I should just hand over that extra $50.

If you are already a VZW customer,  go to this link, underneath the device description, click on "Check your iPhone 4 eligibility" and type in your info. If you're not eligible for an early upgrade it will show the the full retail price if you buy now and, it will also show you the price and date when you are eligible for the reduced price.
If you are eligible for an ugrade, I'm not sure if it still shows the full retail price.

And yes, we all full understand the ins and outs of the business world. However, Apple is pretty strict about how much you can charge for their products. That aside, if in fact the pre-order can only be done on Verizon's site on Feb 3rd, and they are not giving loyal customers any type of discount, sure would be nice if they could keep the retail price the same for us. Especially when they know that the majority of those purchasing at full retail will be existing customers. Besides, we're talking about a "reputable business" with Verizon, not Ebay or Craigslist.
In case you're wondering why I think the majority of people paying full retail will be existing, non-upgrade eligible customers? It's simple, a new customer could get the discount price, and cancel a couple months in, eat the ETF and it would still be cheaper than the full retail cost.

Why can't TextEdit open more than 5 links at a time in Yosemite? In the previous OS, I could highlight many links at a time, right click and then select "Open URL" to open the links in Safari. Now, if I select more than five links at a time (and sometimes with five links) it will only open the first five and TextEdit pops up with the alert, "The 'Open URL' service could not be used."

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • My ipod touch 4th generation no longer holds it's charge for more than 40mins,needs new internal battery but I have no idea how to go about this. i love my ipod and don't want it to loose power completely, can anyone help?

My ipod touch 4th generation no longer holds it's charge for more than 40mins from full power, think it needs a new internal battery but have no idea how to go about this and am no longer covered by my guarantee. Can anyone advise me on what's best? Thanks in advance

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use an Apple wall-mount charger.  Do NOT use a computer's USB port.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
    According to Apple:
    Use Your iPod Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • Why does Verizon charge me $30 to buy a new phone and renew my two year plan?

Why does Verizon charge me $30 to buy a new phone and renew my two year plan?  That seems counter-intelligent in a day where other carriers are begging for my business. I've been a customer for 10 years but am considering switching on principle.

Just because "other people do it," doesn't make it right.

I'm sending my bill in exchange for a provided service. The activation fee is garbage, and IMO, if smaller carriers can live without it (because they are), Verizon doesn't need to charge it. Frankly, I'm tired of people settling because "The fee isn't going away." If you agree with it, so be it, but you're the minority.
You are correct, just because other people do it, doesn't make it right. It also "doesn't make it wrong".
Verizon has chosen a price they charge for providing a service. Part of that price is an "upgrade" fee if you choose to purchase a phone at a ~$400 discount. ALL this is doing is lowering the amount of discount on the phone. It is, however, the price Verizon has set to provide their service. You are paying it in exchange for that provided service. You may not agree with it, that is your choice and are free to go elsewhere. If you are in the position to pay this "upgrade" fee, you are NOT under contract and are free to change without penalty. Your choice. If you pay it, you have made your choice.
Yes, other "smaller carriers" can live without it because they are forced to, not because they "want" to or because it is "right". They have to have some sort of incentive to attract customers. The bigger carriers do this by providing a larger footprint for their service. Smaller carriers cannot do so and have to resort to other methods. Lower price is one of those. There are trade-offs in life. Choose your trade-offs. I prefer to pay a slightly higher price for more reliable service. I have been with several providers in the past, Verizon provides me the most reliable service of those I have tried.

  • Why can't I download more than 50mb in iPhone ??

Why can't I download more than 50mb in iPhone ??

Deggie is correct. The carriers originally wanted it so people wouldnt be downloading large files on their networks and causing congestion. Also look at is from a carrier perspective for protecting costumers. People could also complain if they went over their data plan that they should have received a warning about downloading large files. Rather than argue about updating/downloading apps, they have the warning now.
I am hoping down the road that carriers converse with Apple to lift those, we will see what happens. Rodgers has more influence on lifting that limit that normal costumers would.

  • HT204088 App charged me more than the price it showed?

what should I do if an app I downloaded charged me more than the price it showed? I downloaded an angry birds app for my son that said it was 0.99 and they charged me $10.98! Is there any way I can cancel the purchase and recover my money?

Your son probably inadvertently made an in-app purchase. Many apps, particularly games, are free for the base game but charge for additional features; in the case of Angry Birds, things like "Mighty Eagles".  First, to prevent this from happening again, turn off "In App purchases" in the Restrictions settings on your device. For more information, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4213
As to a refund, that's not automatic since the terms of sale for the iTunes Store state that all sales are final. You can contact the iTunes Store, explain the reason for your request, and ask, though:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact.html
They're usually pretty lenient in the case of inadvertent purchases, but there are no guarantees.
    Good luck.

  • Droid X battery will not stay charged for more than 5 minutes. Help

My Droid X will not hold a charge for more than 5 min. 1 phone call and the phone shuts down.

        bdsutton,
Thanks so much for your inquiry! There hasn't been a software update for the Droid X since 2/16/12.
I would like for you to put the device in Safe Mode http://bit.ly/OAXCYh and then check your email to see if it still turns off.
Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue.
I want you to try that to see if there is something else affecting why the phone battery goes low only when you check email.

  • My macbook pro won't hold a charge for more than a day...do I need a new battery?

    my macbook pro won't hold a charge for more than a day...do I need a new battery?  I have a 13" early 2011 model.

A: did you leave most of the time or always plugged in?
B: did you often drain the battery very low?
If so, then thats the issue
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
    Storing your MacBook
If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.
    Considerations:
Your battery is subject to chemical aging even if not in use. A Lithium battery is aging as soon as its made, regardless.
In a perfect (although impractical) situation, your lithium battery is best idealized swinging back and forth between 20 and 85% SOC (state of charge) roughly.
Further still how you discharge the battery is far more important than how it is either charged or stored short term, and more important long term that cycle counts.
Ultimately counting charge cycles is of little importance.  Abuse in discharging (foremost), charging, and storing the battery and how it affects battery chemistry is important and not the ‘odometer’ reading, or cycle counts on the battery.
Everything boils down to battery chemistry long term, and not an arbitrary number, or cycle count.
Keep your macbook plugged in when near a socket since in the near end of long-term life, this is beneficial to the battery.
    Peace

Two different processes can have different task initiators...task initiator means creation of a process instance which can happen only once

  • Why can't I minimize more than 2 notepads in FF? I used to be able to minimize as many notepads as I wanted. FF must have done an update & now I can't do that anymore. Is there a setting I can change that will enable me to do that?

    # Question
Why can't I minimize more than 2 notepads in FF? I used to be able to minimize as many notepads as I wanted. When I do research on a topic I keep many notepads open until I am finished. FF must have done an update & now I can't do that anymore. Is there a setting I can change that will enable me to do that again?
Also at that time, the length of sentence I am typing changed.
It doesn't seem to have any limit to how far it can extend to the right.
Please help. I am not very techy & don't understand Computerese.
    Please explain in everyday English.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Prabhuti,
Thank you so much for all your suggestions & helpful links to get help. I am not very computer literate. I have taken many classes over the years I've had a computer but I am still only a beginner.
I want to tell you that I found a solution to my problem. I finally realized that maybe FF was not the problem but Wind. 7 on my new comp. I went on the 7 Forums & found another person who had the same problem & the answer was simple all I had to do was to right click on the Notepad icon & it would bring up a new Notepad & I could open & minimize as many as I want. I had moved the Notepad icon to my taskbar from the Start menu when I got my new computer.
I have one more question for you. The notepad 2 program was mentioned there along with several others. I think it was about that prog. that someone said that it could open many notepads & when you closed the comp. the notepads would not disappear. Do you know if it was that program? Also is it possible to use that program the same way as I used the original Notepad? There are so many technical options on that program that I didn't understand. All I want to do is open the Notepad & copy & paste my notes in it & minimize them. Not losing them if I shut down the comp. would be real benefit to me. I believe that is the same prog. you recommended to me. Since you seem to understand tech things I thought maybe you could tell me if that is possible?
Thank you so much for all your help.
