Why is Verizon limiting Spam Filter to only 50 entrees?

I've been with Verizon (first with DSL and now FIOS) for over 15 years.   Lately, the SPAM has gotten really out of hand and I have realized that the most powerful way to deal with it is to set-up the SETTINGS / E-MAIL OPTIONS / FILTERS inside the Verizon's Webmail website for each .NET account I have and use.
Believe me, it actully works but of course, the spammers keep changing the spelling of keywords to bypass the filter.  I have had no problem to go in an add "new" keywords about once a week but just now, I got the shock of my life.
It seems that Verizon is limiting each email address to just 50 filters.   WHY??!?!?!?
It's not as it you can go logic entry for each keyword (meaning you can specify 10 words in each entry and us AND/OR logic).  You need to use a phrase or just a single word per EACH filter entry.
How and whom do you suggest I contact to complain about this.  I am considering writing the executive office if I have to.
This is just so wrong.   When I go in and add filter keywords, I am not taking up Verizon heck of a lot of Verizon's storage, nor am I taking up their time.
Can someone please tell me if I am missing anything and how can we all get involved in having them moving up the limitation from 50 to at least 200, if not 500!!!!
- A shocked Verizon user

I have been reading these discussions periodically for the past few months and subscribed today just to add my voice to the chorus of customers who find Verizon's silence and inaction on this issue inexcusable.  Verizon email accounts are not free and every Verizon customer knows that we pay through the nose for Verizon FIOS service including the email.  I view it as an insult to consantly see recommendations about "turning the spam filter on", "marking not caught messages as SPAM" and "forwarding not caught messages to Verizon" when none of these actions changes anything as anyone who has done these for months can attest.
I too have been a Verizon customer for over a decade and only early this year became subjected to the massive onslaught of OBVIOUS spam.  I understand and accept that the spammers change servers everyday and send out the same spam over and over.  However, key word filtering does work so if key word filtering works at the end user level, why can't verizon do it at the server/source level?  Needless to say I too was livid when I discovered that Verizon limited the number of filter rules one can make.  So on the one hand they do minimal filtering (the only SPAM I see get caught is spam that has my username in the subject line and offers of male enhancement remidies), but limit the amount of filtering you can do.  Unfortunately for us customers, as the old saying goes, Membership (in the monopoly club) has its privileges.

  • SPAM filter not working

Over the last week or two, SPAM going into my Inbox has spiked to about 15-20 messages a day. I've confirmed my SPAM filter is enabled and quite a bit of spam is filtered everyday. Is something wrong with Verizon's SPAM filter? I've searched this forum and it seems this is a recurring issue. I don't want to close this email account but it's getting ridiculous and messy to manage.
    Thanks!

I guess you are already doing all of this, http://www.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/highspeed/troubleshooting/security/questionsone/...
You can also use blocking- Settings - email settings - blocking
A better logn term solution is to use a free email solution such as zohomail. IF you use the free addrees provided by them as your primary account you should see a huge decrease in SPAM plus you will still have full access to verion mail through zoho's full featured web interface.

  • Ground Hog Day redux with recurrent overly aggressive spam filter on Verizon outbound email

Each day I send out two emails.  Each is to one addressee.  Each contains as an attachment a jobs newsletter my two friends have asked me to forward.  About every two weeks since this summer the Verizon spam filter identifies my emails as "spam."  This then requires contacting the Verizon spam site and within a day or so I can send my two daily emails until the spam filter blocks them again.
Has anyone had any success with a more permanent fix?  Is there anyone at Verizon who cares that their customers are  being inconvenienced by their war against spam?  I don't like being collateral damage in that war.
    Thanks,
    Bill

Verizon does care that legitimate emails are being blocked. That is why they have the [email protected] address available in the first place. It actually causes fewer problems than allowing spam to continue unabated, which leads to situations where entire DOMAINS block ALL Verizon mail for days, even weeks at a time. The outbound spam filter isn't perfect, but it IS a step forward.
Sending false positives to the [email protected]  EVERY time is the best way to help the filter improve.
Some other troubleshooting steps you can try:
If you have a signature, try removing one line at a time from it and attempting to send the message again. Some signatures look like "ads" to the filters, apparently.
If you are using a pop3 client (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.) try sending your message from the verizon.net website. If this resolves the issue, then it is something that your client is adding to the message that is causing it to be blocked.
If the Subject line of your message has a whole bunch of "Fwd: Fwd: Re: Fwd:" try removing some of them.
If a forum member gives an answer you like, give them the Kudos they deserve. If a member gives you the answer to your question, mark the answer as Accepted Solution so others can see the solution to the problem.

  • Verizon spam filter not working---how can I stop the massive influx of SPAM?

For more than 5 months I have tolerated the massive influx of Spam from my emial account.  I check my spam filter settings, my outlook junk mail settings, and even resorted to deleting spam one by one.  There has to be some solution to stopping this push of junk mail from the server to my inbox.
    Any ideas and suggestions?

SPAM Detector tool - for incoming email only
What does SPAM DETECTOR tool do?
Your ability to communicate with family or friends can be hindered by unsolicited email or "spam". If you have your SPAM Detector ON, it will sift and catch unsolicited emails sent to your email account and either present them in the SPAM Detector folder or delete them. (Note: You can adjust your SPAM Detector settings in the Settings/Email Settings tab within Message Center.)
Furthermore, if there are emails you deem as SPAM, you can “Mark as SPAM” by selecting the email from your email inbox list view and select SPAM icon from top menu bar. It will put the email in your SPAM Detector folder and send an email to the VZ Abuse team and third party vendor to evaluate. If it is deemed SPAM, SPAM Detector definitions/rules will be updated.
Please note that marking email as SPAM does not add the email to the Blocked Senders list. Furthermore, SPAMMERs rarely use the same email address more than once to send SPAM.
With that said, You should start doing the following:
You- should start reporting the spam with a spam button in the webmail client
For-ward spam emails that were not caught to [email protected]
Set your e-mail filter. An e-mail filter and spam blocking software are absolutely critical. Set these security measures to update automatically to ensure that you are protected from the latest threats.
NEVER reply to spam. Replying to spam, even to "unsubscribe," could set you up for more spam.
Protect your e-mail address and instant message ID. If you must post this information online, set up two identities, one for real use and one for online activities.
Be wary of e-mail attachments. Change the settings on your e-mail program so that images and attachments are not opened automatically. Only open attachments from users known to you.
Watch out for phishing scams. Don't click on links in e-mails or instant messages unless the sender is known to you. Instead, open a separate web browser and visit the site directly.
Create smart and strong passwords. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.
Never enter your personal information in a pop-up window. You may not be able to tell when a scammer has hijacked a seemingly legitimate site.
Don't fill out online surveys, or register for contests or fan clubs. These may be fronts for spammers trying to collect your e-mail address

  • No iPhone SPAM FILTER - why no iPhone SPAM FILTER?

I'm tired of spending 10 minutes a day deleting spam from my iPhone. Why doesn't the Junk Mail filter on my iMac synch up and work on my iPhone?

I'm not aware of any email client on a cell phone that includes a spam filter and if so, one that syncs all "learned" settings with the junk mail filter available with the email client used on a computer.
I access my MobileMe account with the Mail.app on my Mac and with the iPhone's Mail client. Since all server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account, and the Mail.app on my Mac includes a junk mail filter and is always launched and running, I have a remote junk mail filter for my iPhone.
The responsibility for this should be at the incoming mail server for the account anyway. This is like Microsoft placing all responsibility for security with antivirus software, which they pretty much do anyway, but shouldn't.

  • Is there a Spam filter for Mail? In iOS 5?

I haven't seen this question posted for a couple of years, so I'm curious if iOS 4 has addressed my concern. Can Mail for iPod Touch 4th Generation be set up with some sort of spam filter? I have very good filters associated with my various email accounts at their servers (Gmail, GoDaddy, Earthlink) but all of these accounts pass the spam through to my iPod.
Will this be fixed in iOS 5?
And also ... why do some messages not offer the "Trash Can" icon, but only the multiple button option to "Move to>Trash"?
    Thanks

No. iOS5 isn't out yet. We don't know what's in it. But likely there isn't.

  • Email SPAM filter doesn't work

Is the webmail SPAM filter supposed to ... like ... prevent SPAM? I get the same SPAM every day. The SPAM button does nothing,

I have been marking about 30 per day as spam and forwarding all of them to the address that Verizon says is for undetected spam. The spam I get is all from the same outfit, I believe, based on the uniformity of how they package their notes and the fact that all of the links are spoofed.  One would think that after 30 a day for several months, somebody in Verizon would wake up to the fact that Verizon users are getting killed with spam. One would think that if they truly cared about our email experience they would have an army of folks jumping on the spam we forward to them, aggressively pursuing it and working to reduce it.  The fact is that they show no evidence of putting forth ANY effort at making our experience better.
The fact seems to be that they have little concern for their email users.  The more of us that stick with Verizon for our home internet service, paying them their monthly fee, but jump to other, better email providers merely means less work for them.  Not a bad model for making maximum profit, but a sucky way to treat customers.
My Verizon Wireless service has been fantastic.  But my Verizon phone/internet service sucks.  I'm just waiting until another provider is available in my area so I can leave Verizon forever.  Lousy support, uncaring employees.  I send in notes to them and get zero response.  Look at the complaints in these forums that continue to rack up. Almost no response from the company.  We're all left to try to deal with our problems ourselves with only minimal support.  Probably some intern that spends his/her shift playing Angry Birds.

  • Spam filter never learns to filter most addresses

Repeatedly, day after day, I have marked emails from certain addresses as spam but the next day they are back in my inbox.  My Verizon Yahoo account learned these immediately.  I hate wading through more spam than necessary.  Why is the spam filter not working properly yet?

You might have better luck setting up a filter and/or adding the address(es) to your Blocked Senders list. The Spam Detector doesn't block based on sender, but on content of the message.

  • How can i turn off the spam filter?

How can i turn off the spam filter for HP eprintcenter?

    zanganah;
    I hope you are doing well and sorry to learn that you are having this issue;
Most of the time when you have issues receiving emails is that the email have something like FWD  subject line. Eliminate that.
Does the email have a title? Make sure it does.
ePrint emails can only have one email address in the “To:” field. To send an email to your printer and to additional email addresses of friends and family at the same time, put your printer's email address in the “To:” field, and put your friends/family email addresses in the “BCC” (blind carbon copy) field.
    Also this are some of the limitations of the service to keep in mind;
The attachment size or number of attachments exceeded the allowed limit.
There is a 5 MB limit to the email and a 5MB limit to each attachment. HP ePrint supports a maximum of 10 attachments to a single email. Emails that exceed these limits will not print.
Is the attached file supported by ePrint? Supported attachments include:
    Microsoft Word
    Microsoft PowerPoint
    Microsoft Excel*
    Text files (.txt)
    PDF
    HTML
Images (bmp, jpg, png, gif, tiff)
    * HP strongly recommends that you preview documents in Excel before printing.
    Hope this helps:

  • Verizon Email Spam Checker

How do I stop Verizon from declaring email I get from one or two individuals as SPAM? I am part of a small group mailing. If she sends it from her COMCAST account it ends up in my spam box on Webmail. If she sends it from GMAIL, I get it...Problem is I dont always use webmail so I may not see it until its way past due.
Does Verizon have issues with COMCAST????
I get other group messages OK, Just from her...I never entered her in a spam filter...Thanks.

I don't know how you would get Verizon to stop treating it as SPAM.
You said you have never tried a SPAM filter; why not? It should work to look for mail coming from a specific email address, and if it is then move it to the inbox, thus when your email client checks the inbox it will find the email.
I was having trouble with the Verizon SPAM filter with email from several organizations that I wanted to see; I set up the filters and they seem to work just fine. If you want to try it, assuming you are using the Rich webmail application, go to My Settings ==> Mail ==> Filters ==> Add New Filter and see if that will work. You will need to know the specific Comcast email address she uses.
Another alternative would be to try adding her email address or domain to the Safe List. I have never used this but it should also work I think, and would be slightly easier to set up.
Can't hurt to try one of the options, might fix your problem with very little effort.

  • Spam filter mulfunction

I have 3 mail accounts that I open via Apple Mail.
As I increasingly get all the medical and insurance spam, I went to the spam filter section of preferences and tried out several settings, to no avail. Either it lets everything in or it throws into the spam bin even my own emails, as well as the daily newsletters I get (of course, their addresses are in the Address Book).
I thought I was just unable to resolve a simple problem, so I went to the Apple store to get the help of a Genius. After 40 minutes of trying all the tricks in his bag the Genius gave up. Very much to my dissatisfaction.
The problem is that I either have to waste time to sort and throw the medical stuff away, or I waste it to find and fish legitimate emails out of the spam bin.
What is the next step in trying to resolve such Apple Mail problem?
    Thanks a lot,
    Luigi

First of all, know that you're talking to other customers here.  If you want to talk to Verizon you need to call or chat with them.
Never, ever, click "unsubscribe" on a spam message.  This confirms to the spmers that your email address is valid and it will be added to even more spam lists.
The only time to use unsubscribe is when the sender is obviously a valid company that you no longer want to receive emails from.
Verizon doesn't control spam or the presence or absence of unsubscribe options.  Again, as noted above, you don't want to use unsubsrcibe on spam messages.  It is really a "subscribe to more spam" button.
Verizon's email service is not the best in the market.  Many people use gmail, outlook or other free email services that offer much better features and spam control.  This also has the added benefit of de-coupling your email account from your ISP.  That way, if you ever change ISPs you don't have to change email addresses.
    Enjoy.

  • Why does Verizon shuffle arond local channels?

    I have a question.
Now, I currently have DirecTV but I've been thinking about getting Verizon FiOS when it is finally available in my area.  One thing though that I'm noticing about Verizon is they appear to be doing this same crazy practice that the local Cable Companies does... It drove me crazy all the time...  Basically, it is where they shift all the local channel numbers around so you have to keep stopping to think about where the channel has been moved to.
For example in the Boston, the local terrestrial channels are like this.
    2(WGBH), 4(WWBZ), 5(WCVB), 7(WHDH), 11(PBS New Hampshire), 25(WFXT), ... 44(WGBX), 56(WLVI) 62, 68,etc. Simple enough.  Now thankfully DirecTV keeps this same pattern...
However on Verizon for say the city of Belmont, MA (Zipcode "02476") the channel lineup is like this.. 38 comes in on 3. 25 comes in on 8. 56 jumps to 12...  etc.  No kind of normalcy basically....
Why did Verizon do this????I see they already have channels going over 1000 so why didn't they vacate 0-99 nationally so the local channels can fall into their correct slot and then start the cable stations like say above channel 99???
In having DirecTV, I've noticed the way that company gets around needing to shift all the local channels all over is they start all of their cable TV stations above channel 99.  This leaves 2-99 as open- so that the local channel can goto its correct allotment anywhere in the USA.  It just seems logical to leave the local channels in their true slot so I'm wondering what was soo appealing about this type of format where everything gets scattered all over.
Does anyone have some idea of what I'm missing and perhaps if there's some kind of method to this madness-- which I've never quite understood?
    ~J. P.

I'm glad I was able to reassure you, but I now think I went too far. Looking at your channel listings you provide, Verizon has some major problems to make it all line up. And looking in more detail at ours, it isn't as simple as I made it out to be.
Verizon, IMO to their credit, has tried to standardize channel assignments for most everything around the country. Easier for them I suspect. Anyway, they start their SD cable channels at 50 in most places, I think; that means that UHF channels 50 and above must be relocated somewhere, and they do that, down into the low range. Here in Texas, some of the higher broadcast channels, but not all, are relocated - 27 to 7, 33 to 9, 39 to 10, etc, while 21 is on 21, 29 is on 29, etc.Verizon puts the local PEG cable channels at 30-47, then TV Guide at 48, and local weather at 49, then the real cable channels 50 and above. So all of the local broadcast channels that they carry are reloacated if necessary to below 30 here.
The HD channels (the ones that do offer HD channels) do follow the scheme I mentioned, local + 500.
When I made my statement earlier, I was really thinking of the "major" channels (ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS, etc), because those are pretty much the only local channels I watch, I forgot about all of the various smaller channels (religeous, Spanish language, etc) that they do carry. Sorry, I really didn't mean to make a mistake, I should have actually looked at the lineup first.

  • Amavisd not running, mails not delivered when spam filter is enabled

    Hey everyone,
So I've got a slight problem here with a 10.4.11 server. Our spam filter was set to be too tolerant of spam, allowing a threshold 22.0 before bouncing it, so through the command line I edited /etc/amavisd.conf to $sa_kill_level_deflt = 6.0; tag2 is set to 3.0. Then I bounced amavisd via:
    sudo /bin/launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.amavis.amavisd.plist
    sudo /bin/launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.amavis.amavisd.plist
Well that caused all sorts of whacky issues with the queue. The server couldn't connect to itself and wouldn't deliver any mail, only queue it up. So I went back in to amavisd.conf and changed the parameters back to default, then bounced amavisd again. To no avail. Then I restored from a backup file I had created and bounced amavisd again to no avail.
Finally I removed the junkmail and virus filters via SA, saved, then reenabled them to no avail. Then I just disabled them and mail is flowing again, but I still have 187 messages in my queue that wont get delivered no matter how many times I flush it.
After more research, I issued a ps -U clamav to see if amavisd is running, below are the only results I get:
    PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND
    1291 ?? Ss 0:00.01 freshclam -d -D -pfreshclam.pid -c 1
I would assume it is NOT running...? I next issued amavisd to see if it throws any errors, and get the following:
    ERROR: MISSING REQUIRED BASIC MODULES:
    MIME::Parser
    BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/amavisd line 139.
So my next question is how do I repair amavisd so I can get it to run so I can reenable the content filter. Here are the results of postconf in case you need them:

    TIA for an help!
    Andrew

To get the queue going, issue:
    sudo postsuper -r ALL
That said, I would think you initially introduced a typo in amavisd.conf. Next you probably restored amavisd and amavisd.conf files which were incompatible with each other and/or amavis incompatible with the updated perl modules of the latest security update.
To fix things, I would re-apply the latest combo updater and security updates (assuming you are running stock versions and have not installed your own versions of amavisd, etc).
If things still do not work, please post the output of:
    amavisd -V

  • Messages released from spam filter do not appear in mailbox IF released more than once.

PLEASE HELP!! We use the Mailfoundry 2100 spam filter appliance in our organization. We are looking at alternatives for how we handle messages that this unit classifies as spam. We are running Exchange 2010 SP3 next inline to the Mailfoundry.
Here is the issue. When a message is quarantined on the spam filter, the recipient is notified and given the option to release the message so that it comes into their mailbox. That works fine... THE FIRST TIME they do it.
If the same user, for any reason needs to go back and release the same message again, it DOES NOT make it to their mailbox.
Here is the catch. Every time the message is released, it is making it to the Journaling Mailbox.
So to clarify what's happening, if I release a message from our spam filter for the second time, the message shows up again in the journaling mailbox, but it DOES NOT show up in my mailbox. It works the first time, but after that, it does not.
I have used all of the Exchange Toolbox options to try to find the issue, but to this point nothing has helped. I hoping some of you Exchange Guru's can help me out here.
    Chris V

I have looked at the logs and here is the only difference I see. I must add that you should read each entry from the bottom to the top. If reading it this way, you will see that the second line is missing the name of the server on the failed (2nd) message
    release. Any ideas?
Here is another one I released 3 times.

  • Why will Verizon not allow the use of a phone number that is Not a Verizon Number?

Not happy with Verizon! No alerts sent to iPad, no phone numbers other than Verizon numbers. Why?

Ok, I have been on the phone twice now with customer support, all I want is an alert sent to my IPad for data usages !
I want an alert sent to my iPad, or my phone, they can not, or will not do it? My phone is through at&t, Verizon will not except any phone number that is not a Verizon! WHY? my iPad is through Verizon, I know they can send alerts to the iPad, because they did it, they sent me a new password through an alert? I went over on my data plan because I did not get the alert in time, it was sent through email, a day late! Also, i asked about being able to serf the Internet and talk on the phone on Verizon, I was told that only 4G devices are capable, Wow,! I have been able to to this with my AT&T iPhone 3Gs from day one. I am now rethinking if I want to switch to Verizon? Is AT&T really that much more advanced?

Only on the ipad 2 has the reminders i was told. Can u get my verizon app in the apple market? I did that for the iphone4 verizon. U can always sign in my verizon on ur ipad. Even if u switch to get a phone with verizon the ipad is on a different #.
