Why Is Video Output File So Large?

Hi, everyone,
I have a video screen capture demonstrating a piece of software that I work with.  The video is 5:30 long at 30 FPS.  It is 7.5 MB, encoded in H.264 (I transcoded it to this format myself.)
I want to cut out 1:30 of the video.  So I opened iMovie, added this video to a 30 FPS project, cropped the two portions I want from the event (minus the 1:30 I don't want), and placed them together in the project with a fade-to-black transition between them.  I exported the video to the same size, using the same H.264 encoder.
Now the file is 75 MB.
Can someone tell me what I have done to increase this file so much?  I would love any tips to get this file back down to 7.5 MB.

there are a few other 'knobs' to play  with ... :
usually, there's no need for 30fps on a screengrab - who cares when the mouse cursor 'stutters'?
for a public viewing, 15fps would reduce file size by half.
next, for screengrabs, I wouldn't suggest h254 but Animation ...
last, and most important: bitrate. in the many option&sub-options of the Export with Quicktime dialog, you're allowed to set manually the bit-rate. for plain graphical content as a sreen-grab you can experiment with ultra-low settings, <1.000kB/s or even <500kB/s ... even for a 1920x1280 video (iM had changed the res of your grab into that res).
if the grab had a smaller res, you can re-size that on export in the same dialog too.
lowering frame-rate, bit-rate and probably resolution will help you to accomplish the goal.
for the last grain of quality on low bit-rate, I would also suggest the free x264-encoder which imho performs on low rates better than the original h264.-

  • Why would an alias file be larger than the original file?

I have a simple document that is 106kb. When I create an alias to the file, the alias is 133kb. Why would the alias file be larger than the orginal file when the alias file is simply a redirect to the original file?

  • Why are my .moxl files so large?

I am trying to slim down our team site collection--a never-ending struggle you're all famiiar with. :-)
So, I am in Storage Metrics looking for large files. Some of my forms library SharePoint Designer workflows are HUGE! in one, the .moxl file is 47 MB!
Why do these files get so large, and what can I do about it? I though all worlfow files were realtively small.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to know the reason of xoml file is large.
xoml file is a serialization of workflow object. When creating
the workflow in workflow designer, it builds object tree and serialized it into XOML format.I suggest you can check which workflow the xoml file belongs to.

  • Why is the output file jerky ?

    Hi there,
I have AE CS5 on my Mac. My system is 27" iMac core i5 with 12 GB RAM DDR3 1333 MHz with quad core.
I rendered a 40 seconds clip with an earth spinning.
I output it to mov format in 1920 x 1080.
When I did a RAM preview, it was fine & the earth was spinning smoothly.
But the output file (in mov) - (I did thru Composition > Make movie) when I play using QuickTime player is jerky at 20th Sec to 29th sec.
I then import this mov file into Final Cut, it look stuck in the Viewer but was perfect on the Canvas.
When I render in Final Cut, the output file as mov and use the same Quick Time player to play it & it is perfect.
Can I know what is the reason that it is not working in Quick Time the first time when it was fresh out from AE ?
    Thank you.
    Cheers

The default render settings use Quicktime Animation codec at best quality. These files will not playback smoothly because the data rate is too high for the hard drives to keep up with. The animation codec is a lossless codec designed not designed for playback.
Final Cut uses compressed codecs designed for playback as the default. I'd suggest that you open up the help files (F1) and read the entire section on Rendering and Exporting (link).

  • Why is the jpg file so large?

I can't find the reason why this attached image file is so huge?! Lately, when saving an image from Photoshop cc to a jpg image file, the file size has gone up 10 times. It is almost the same as when saving a PNG file. I normally use 9 in jpg quality, and I have been working with Photoshop for over 12 years. Have never seen seen anything like this before. I have attached two images for comparison. One of them is just one pixel row wide and should be no bigger than 20k or so. But it is 1,5MB. The other file with the iPhone/AppleWatch contains a lot more information but is almost the same size (1.6MB, unless image is compressed or resized when posting this ).
    Any suggestions?
(Notice the very thin gradient line below)

The image with the 1 row of pixels was removed when posting this for some reason, but I guess you understand the issue?

  • Why Block Video Output?

I have just purchase a brand new shiny Yamaha AV amp and Yamaha iPod dock (which was supposed to be video compatible) with the hope of using the on-screen facility to select music tracks. But oh no, thanks to someone in Apples ludicrous decision to block video output unless you're using Apple's own dock and cables I can’t!
Apple - please unblock this ridiculous restriction!

    Hi,
I'm not condoning it, but in my estimation this will not change. Apple implemented this to secure the video so that they could reach the agreements they have with the film companies regarding online purchasing and rentals. If the limit is ever officially removed I'm sure Apple would lose the iTunes Store content overnight. It's for this reason that the first video iPod (the fifth generation) can accept rental films.

  • Why is the Other file so large on my iPhone - nearly 5 GB.

I have a 32 GB iphone 5s. I'm running out of space.  In syncing with my computer, it shows the different file groups (audio, video, photos, etc.), and the "Other" file is nearly 5 GB.  Why is it that big, and what is it all?  Also is there a way to reduce it in size?

"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
    Text messages
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
    Probably a few I've missed.
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 3 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Sometimes "Other" includes data corruption. If you suspect this is a possibility try connecting to iTunes and click the Restore iPhone button. First restore from backup; the Other doesn't get any smaller you can Restore again and set up as New, then add your content back separately from your backup.

  • Why is my Illustrator file so large, the EPS file is only linked?

I have an Illustrator CS4 file. I have a 20MB EPS file that I have placed as a link in it. When I go to save it, the Illustrator file becomes 100MB!!
Why is this happening? Am I not checking the correct settings when saving the Illustrator file?
    Please advise. Thanks!

As mentioned already, with certain options data will always be embedded. That would especially be true if the linked file is part of a larrger construct with belnding options, clipping masks etc., requiring to produce additional clipping paths and objects when creating PDF data.

  • Why is 500kb jpg file too large for PDF readers?

I have a jpg file size of 500kb and it is too big for GoodReader and PDF reader.  Adobe Reader does not appear in the "Open In" dialog.  Please help. I have an iPad 2.
    hawkdavis

Can you open these attachments in your email with no issues? There is no way that 500kb is too large as Diavonex has already stated.
Two thoughts - the jpgs are not being saved correctly or you have an issue with GoodReader.
Have you restarted your iPad? Quit GoodReader completely and then try again?

  • Why Is "Export Small File Size" Large?

Hi, I work in CS3.  Out of 100 brochures, I have two brochures that will not export to a small file size PDF. The settings for export are all the same.  What else should I be looking for?  The sizes are usually 1 MG.  These particular 2 brochures are 5 - 6 MG.  What can I look for to correct this?
    Thanks

Small size is very dependent on the contents being exported to PDF. Images are readily compressed. Text and vector data isn't. Thus, if your content is primarily text and vector, it is very unlikely that the content can be compressed signficantly more via change of settings.
Another factor that can relate to image compression is use of any duotones that use spot colors. Such images cannot be JPEG-compressed, only ZIP-compressed.

  • Output file is in slow motion

    hello,
When I render my video in after effects the output file is in slow motion, its not the render settings but something else.
    Anyone can help me?
    thanks

What do you mean that it's in slow motion? Are you sure that the problem isn't that you created a file so large that your video player and computer can't play it in real time?
    See this page:
"FAQ: Why is my output file huge, and why doesn't it play back smoothly in a media player?"

  • Canvas brightness doesn't match FCP output files/Matches TIF Still Files!!

Hi, the first part of this problem was addressed earlier in the forum-the fact that the Canvas shows the clips as much much darker and way more saturated than when viewed on an external monitor, or when exported to DVD Studio Pro and burned on dvd.
The second part is that when I export an image from the clip in Final Cut using Quicktime Conversion to Still Image and open up the still in Preview or Photoshop or email it to another computer IT MATCHES the much darker and more saturated canvas. How is this possible? How can I get it to match the video output files?
Any advice asap would be really really appreciated.

You need to understand monitoring... first, a computer's display isn't set up for use as a TV set or video monitor. They don't exhibit the same response color wise to gammas. So it makes perfect sense that viewing a still will match what you saw in the canvas. If you were to look at that still externally on a video monitor, you'd see it also matches the video it came from on that same monitor. Colors aren't shifting, the differences in the displays of that same file is what's causing your consternation.
Always color correct for the medium you wish to exhibit in... so if TV, then correct to an external video monitor which is properly set up. If to the web, then you color correct using computer displays (also properly set up) To further the problem, the gamma responses from a PC's display don't match those of a Mac's display. The PC will see things darker in general... so that too has to be taken into account when judging color, contrast and brightness...

  • Media Encoder CS4 output file size varies--why??

I was batch encoding several files yesterday, and one of the files failed. Adobe Media Encoder provided no details, other than when I hover over the yellow exclamation point error icon, it says: "Error compiling movie. Unknown error." Very insightful.
Today I reprocessed the file same file with the same preset [FLV - Same As Source (Flash 7 and Higher)] and it worked fine. To check for instability on my machine, I actually ran the same job 10 times, and each job succeeded. But the curious thing is, even though I was using the same input file and output preset, I see that the output files vary in size. The output sizes are:
    30,739,977 bytes
    30,750,834 bytes
    30,750,504bytes
    30,750,654bytes
    30,739,928bytes
    30,740,044bytes
    30,750,615bytes
    30,740,001bytes
    30,739,979bytes
    30,750,637bytes
Now I understand that this variation is less than 10kB on a 30MB file, so it's prety small. But I am curious as to why the file size would vary in this way.
    Any ideas?

I would guess that you are overclocking your cpu and the cooler is not able to make the cpu cool enough and some calculations can go wrong. There are programs that put the cpu in a high load and check if it's running properly as expected. Give them a try.

  • Why is my word and pdf files so large? How can I reduce the size?

My document contains mostly photos from a database via a path to the actual jpeg photos on disk.
There are 39 jpeg photos + a small amount of text with each photo.
The 39 jpeg photos on the disk add up to be 5.79 mb.
If I export the crystal reports document as [Microsoft Word (97-2003) Non Editable] the, the file size is 36.8 mb.
If I export the same data as a [Microsoft Word (97-2003) Editable] the file size is only 3.1 mb.
That is a difference of 33.7 mb! Why?
Also, when I export the same data to a PDF file it is much larger than I think it should be; 12.7 mb.
Why is my word and PDF files so large?
How can I reduce the size of the word and PDF files? (without reducing the photo quality).
Are there any tools to post process the Word or PDF files to reduce the file size?

You can't, extra size is to hold the details
