Why is waking Leopard up so buggy!??!

Comp goes to sleep, and won't wake up!
This has happened on the Macbook and Powermac!
Argh!

Two questions:
1. After the lid is opened, have you (any of you) tried increasing the screen brightness to make sure it's not just that the screen is dim?
2. When you shut the lid to put your macbook to sleep, do you let it go to sleep completely (i.e. wait until the light at the front is flashing) before moving it (putting into your backpack, etc.)? Moving it before the light is flashing might cause sleep to fail.

  • Why are "Signatures" so Unreliable and Buggy?

    Using OS 10.5.4
Ok, why are the Mail "Signatures" so buggy and unreliable? I opened Mail today and when I go new Message my signature do not show up. They worked fine yesterday.
I went into the Preferences and under "All Signatures" it shows that I have 2 signatures, but when I click on my 2 different mail accounts (below "All Signatures") the signatures are missing.
I didn't change anything to make them not work so what's up?
Also when I create a new message I can't choose a signature from the little drop down in the email. Why is that?
Very frustrated signatures have never worked properly.
    Thanks

Your signatures are stored as webarchive files in your <home>/Library/Mail/Signatures folder. There should be a webarchive file for each signature and they in turn are referenced in a SignaturesByAccount.plist file within the same folder. It is possible that the plist file has become corrupted and/or the signature files are corrupted. Move the SignaturesByAccount.plist file to the desktop and then re-create your signatures to see if that resolves the problem.

  • Why Is My Leopard So Buggy?

I question why I upgraded to 10.5.1 almost everyday because of these problems. Should I re-install Leopard?
    Problems:
    More program crashes than Tiger
Screen sometimes does not turn on after in sleep mode
Randomly files will disappear from the desktop and reappear after restart
I have to deal with iChat timing out because of port problems
All around the OS is acting really buggy and I haven't really enjoyed it since I purchased it. Should re-installing fix any of these problems?

    More program crashes than Tiger
This may be due to some applications simply not being Leopard compatible or their preferences being corrupted, or the need to repair permissions.
Screen sometimes does not turn on after in sleep mode
Any non-Apple peripherals not familiar with Apple's low-power mode for USB and Firewire ports can cause the Energy Saver to fail to wake up.
Randomly files will disappear from the desktop and reappear after restart
This is an indication that Spotlight may need to reindex your files or that there is directory damage. Do you need to know how to check for this? Is your data backed up?
I have to deal with iChat timing out because of port problems
Are you using any software or hardware based firewall programs other than the system's own?
Stop using any third party utilities designed to empty cache, update prebinding, or repair permissions. They can actually cause damage to cache files creating some of the same symptoms you've been having.
Make sure your hard drive is not over 85% full. This amount can also create directory issues on systems.
If you need help doing any of these checks, let us know which ones you don't know how.

  • Why will a Leopard backup DVD not work on G5.

    A couple of Leopard issues:
1, When I a make a dvd backup of my Leopard dvd using either Disk Utility or Toast it will work fine on the intel but will be spit out of the G5. The G5 cannot make double layer so I must rely on a computer that does! My G4 can make double layer but it is 400 miles away now! When is a copy not a copy?
2, Leopard disk utility repair permissions takes a long long time. It gives the errors discussed on other posts but why such a long time?? By the way, the Diskwarrior site gives some cautions about repairing permissions but does not address the inordinate amount of time, with respect
    to Tiger, issue.
Other than the above and some applications no longer launching or working properly I appear to have two stable systems working. As I have done for years I install a new OS on an external drive, find out what works and what don't and in a few weeks upgrade the main drive. I usually use Supperdupper but found out it does not work on Leopard, a least for me! So I have not yet figured out how to make an archive copy of a Leopard system. Hard drives are like people, they eventually die. I have not tried a restore using Time Machine so I do not have any faith in it yet!

The fact that your G5 cannot make a dl DVD means nothing. I am sure it can read it, and that's all that counts. If you can play a movie on the G5, it can read a dual-layer DVD. You have some other issue there.
I would also point out that not all DVD DL blanks are equal and some machines can only read the + and some only the - types. A homemade dual-layer DVD is not the same as a commercial one.

This is a known "issue" which has been discussed here many times. We do not know why it takes a long time. Only Apple knows.

  • Seriously Apple, why can't Leopard render a transparent menu bar on my Mac?

I have a 2-year-old PowerBook 12" 1.5 GHz running Leopard 10.5.2 freshly updated today. I thought for sure I'd get to see a translucent menu bar but, no, still opaque as ever with no option to change.
Apple, let me tell you some of the things this pretty capable computer can do:
-Dynamically render transparency and reflections in a magnifying Dock
-Dynamically render transparency in Terminal windows with varying levels of transparency
-Render GPU-intensive animations such as Genie effect, rotating cube, and dashboard "splash"
-Hey, I can even boot into Linux, run Gnome, and make it's menu bar transparent!
Please stop telling me my computer is not compatible enough to display a translucent menu bar. Displaying the transparency in the menu bar has got to be one of the least intensive operations Leopard will do. It is a static image (save for seldom changing menu items) that rarely needs to be re-rendered. Terminal windows, however, get resized, dragged around and display their transparency beautifully.
Let's get some straight answers as to why this simple issue of getting a Transparent menu bar consistently displayed (ot not displayed, by choice) across all of your "compatible" hardware is such a confusing mystery.
Thanks for fixing the Stacks, at least.

Thanks for your input. While you may not mind a solid menu bar, I quite like it and would like to have one. My main gripe however, is the fact that this really just seems like some bug that Apple isn't willing to focus on, or admit to.
They say the graphics card can render "most effects" but not the menu bar. But, seriously, as I've mentioned before, why can it render transparent drop-down menus, transparent Terminal windows, transparent/reflective Dock, Dashboard ripple effect but not a simple, basic, transparent menu?
Once I get a decent answer to this, I'll be satisfied. Because right now, telling me my 64MB graphics card can't handle it seems like a load of bulls**t.

  • Please HELP!  Why won't Leopard install on my eMac?

When I put the Leopard DVD in my eMac it does not recognize it at all. I don't hear the drive running, and nothing pops up on the desktop. Altho it is an older machine, it meets all of the system requirements: 1GHz, 640MB, PowerPC G4, with plenty of hard drive space! I've tried to reboot and install, I've tried reboot and hold the C key to install... nothing works! I even put in another DVD just to make sure that the optical drive is still working properly... it played just fine.
I've read everything that I can about installing but haven't found anything that addresses this. I did see one article that said that Leopard cannot be installed on UFS(?)-formatted volumes. Can anyone tell me how I would find out whether I'm affected by that or not? Also, when I tried it in my iBook G4, it popped right up... what's the deal?!
PLEASE HELP! I'M SOOOO FRUSTRATED!! Thanx in advance!

    Hi There...
So, I currently have a CD read/write and DVD player combo drive... should that be able to read the Leopard Install DVD? I don't understand why my iBook G4, 1GHz with 256MB will read it, but my eMac G$, 1GHz, 640MB won't!
I would suspect that your optical drive is not functioning properly. While the drive is most likely capable of reading DL DVDs, it may not be working right. See if you can skip through a full DL DVD movie on the drive with zero errors. Be sure to include both layers meaning go past the 2-hour point.
The target mode is another solution, but even if you install it, you won't be able to fix it or do anything that requires the DVD unless you fix that first.
I will try to install it using the "target mode" with a firewire and see if it works, unless anyone has any other suggestions for me... thanx.

  • Why has snow leopard been removed for download

I don't get Apple - they release a new OSx that can only be updated from Snow Leopard but in their amazing commercial wisdom remove the ability to buy Snow Leopard. That will increase the uptake of Mountain Lion - NOT! Anyway does anyone know how I can legally upgrade to Snow Leopard now? Thanks Apple always useful - your redundancy policy completely ***.
    N

Klaus, are you suggesting that users should always upgrade right away?
What I am suggesting is that users should always try to run the highest version of OS X that their particular Mac can run, not just for the 'extra features' but also for security reasons, i.e. available security updates, which Apple do not supply for outdated versions like Tiger or Leopard.
Are they also supposed to call Apple directly?
If they already have Snow Leopard they have no reason to call Apple!
And what about those users who have Snow Leopard and want to upgrade, but don't have sufficient hardware to run Mountain Lion? Did they wait too long?
That is a question of money. Not all of us can afford, or can see the necessity, of buying the latest MacBook, iMac or whatever. What our Mac did yesterday it will also do tomorrow! The 'built-in obsolescence' of a Mac used to be about 5 years, but is now only about two years or sometimes less. To replace a computer that often is, IMO, overkill, technically speaking, but it may appeal to rich fashion victims!

  • Why does my leopard server sometime come up as a networked PC?

I have an iMac G5 with a fresh install of leopard... everything is working great... but sometimes and I cannot see any rhyme or reason to it, but it will come up in my shared list (bonjour shared) as a little PC monitor icon as opposed to it's iMac icon... seems like something is happening here that I just don't understand....
when it does come up as that I cannot login and connect to it for file sharing... anything I should check out?

If you're trying to change the "From" name, to change it on and iOS device, go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap your iCloud email account, tap you iCloud account at the top, tap Mail at the bottom, then enter the name you want to use in the Name field at the top.
To change the From name on your Mac Mail, go to icloud.com, sign into your account, open Mail, click the gear shaped icon on the top right and choose Preferences, go to the Accounts tab and enter the name you want to use in the Full Name field and click Done.  Then quit Mail on your Mac and re-open it.  Your new From name should now appear in the drop-down list when you compose a new email.

  • Why did Snow Leopard delete ALL of my leopard time machine backups?

I received my copy of snow leopard on Friday. I verified my time machine backups were functioning and current. At the time my backups went back to April of 2009. I performed the upgrade from leopard (10.5.8) to snow leopard (an actual upgrade not a re-install). There were no issues with the upgrade. Today (one day after the upgrade) I noticed time machine running. When looked at what time
Machine was doing it said it was "deleting backups". After that finished it performed a backup. When I went into time machine after that my backups only go back to yesterday. It appears time machine has wiped out all of my leopard based backups. Are
y leopard based backups still there? This appears to mean I can't rollback to leopard or even get files pre snow leopard. It would have been nice to have confirmation from time machine before it did this....

Time Machine shows the oldest backup is Friday, August 28, 2009. I downloaded Time Machine Buddy widget and it works but froze on me twice. I followed the advice in this article (http://www.macworld.com/article/131534/2008/01/tmeye.html) and used the console utility searching for the backupd process. The system logs only go back to 8-29-09 so maybe the logs got purged. The logs do show however that Time Machine deleted the old backups so it could make a 147gb backup. It did this a couple of times....I'm beginning to think though that it has to do with my updating to ilife 09 as well. I updated to ilife09 on Saturday 8/29/09. I have a 140gb photo library (the downside of owning a nikon d80). Updating iphoto 09 tweaks your photo library several times (initial install, after pulling down latest updates from apple, etc). I have a 750gb internal boot drive and a 750gb external time machine drive. I think that each time iphoto tweak the iphoto library it had to perform a ~150gb backup. This would have quickly canabalized all of my old backups... so bottom line is it's the iphoto upgrade and my large iphoto library and NOT Snow Leopard that caused this issue...oops my bad! A work around would have been to shut off time machine before I upgraded to ilife09... and then not turn it back on until iphoto was settled down with updating the library.

  • Why does Snow Leopard Crash Pages?

Pages crashes constantly with the explanation that the SFWordPlugin is the problem. I am forced to go back to using MS Word as a result. Judging from the complaints on the net it seems like Apple are using its customers to test run Snow Leopard. I also got dumped on the phone by the Apple 'Care' line here in the UK.

  • Why not Snow Leopard? Add your reasons.

    - I want my networked printers at home and at work to work (they don't, Epson - "we know we have an IP address problem, were working on it.)
    - I want mobile internet accesss, essential. (Australian telco says no plans to update to accommodate Snow Leopards, sorry)
    I am sooooo ****** off!

Did you consider that you may have a router issue?
Are all the Epson printers you have listed on:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
If they aren't you may want to consider selling those which aren't, and replacing them.
It isn't as if you don't have a choice.
Do you consider which applications have already been tested with Snow Leopard:
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
    http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/snowleopard/slcompat.html#d31aug2009-21 56/
As for Telco's lack of support, are you talking tethering, or some other type of support?

  • Why is 7.0.2 so buggy and unstable?

Since installing version 7.0.2 to fix my 1418 error message problem, I never know whether my iPod will actually work.
Sometimes I get the file/exclamation point telling me it's dead. Then a minute later, my iPod's back up. When I fast forward through playlists, the screen moves ahead faster than the music. I can move 10 songs forward on the screem but it takes a minute or two before the music catches up and starts to play.
When I synch the iPod to iTunes, it's hit or miss if the two will recognize one another. I'm constantly having to go into Windows to tweak the settings so my iPod is recognized. And tweaking it once means nothing. The next time I synch up, I have to do it all over again.
Not to mention the random messages telling me I have a corrupted iPod that needs to be restored. If I unplug my iPod and wait finutes before plugging in again, there's a good chance the problem fixed itself.
****, this is just like the bad old days of monkeying around with MS-DOS.
Come on, Apple. You're too good a company to be acting like a nightmarish combination of Microsoft and Verizon.
Tweak 7.0.2 so it integrates iTunes and iPods as seamlessly as the earlier versions. My iPod is two years old this week. Until mid-September, it worked like a Swiss watch. It was flawless.
I used to tell friends who were considering an iPod that Apple had figured things out so well that it was idiot-proof.
No more. Now I tell them to be prepared to diddle around fixing niggling little things that never seem to behave (misbehave) in the same way.

of the 4 touch screen units we have we have a ios 5.1.1 touch and ipad that we did not upgrade after I did just my touch, but my wifes new iphone 4s that came with ios 6 has had no problems at all.  she went with the iphone 4s due to the "fire wire" connection issue. we both think it was a good for business / crappy for upgraders move on apples part ... we didnt want to have to buy an adapert for everything we use I ios devices for.

  • Why is the Podcasts App so buggy???

I listen to podcasts almost everyday and have been using this app ever since it was first released.
It's basically a dog's breakfast. The main problems are (1) bugs, and (2) lack of functionality.
    Bugs:
    1. The app will start automatically anytime an alarm goes of: someone calls you, after you hang up the last podcast you were listening to starts playing. Same thing with alarms, and even just testing ring tones. ***?
    2. It frequently won't download podcasts. It is very temperamental: it will allow some podcasts to download, others not.
    3. It crashes randomly in the middle of podcasts. This is what motivated me to write this review today. actually this and the fact that problem 2 took me about 2 days and 5 attempts to download the podcast that then crashed. Was this software written by children?
    Lack of basic functionality:
    1. No playlists or anyway to star or prioritize podcasts you want to listen to.
    2. It is basically impossible to browse the titles of individual podcasts because the names are longer than the screen space.
Points 1 + 2 together are a real pain if you, like me, have a collection of one set of podcasts that is over 500 episodes you want to read over and choose from... You can't read the titles and if you take the time to read and select your favorites you can't save them.
Seriously, this app should be up there with Apple disasters like Apple Maps.

I just replaced my prior iPhone 3G by a brand new iPhone 5 and installed this new Podcast app, as podcast content dif not appear in "music" any more.
Although I enjoy having direct sync of podcasts on the iPhone over Wifi (instead of having to plug it to my iTunes), I am not fully satisfied as well:
    - for some podcasts, it seems to be working fine, event though some episodes appear much later on my iPhone as on iTunes
    - for some others, it used to work fine at the start, but I do not get any of the most recent episodes anymore (they do not appear at all)
    - for some others, downloading seems to always fail but streaming is OK
    - for some others, I can see the episodes but cannot donwload nor stream them on my iPhone.
In the meantime, all these podcasts perfectly work on a standard iTunes (on a Mac or a PC).
I tried to unscribe an subscribe again but it didi not fix anything. Perhaps shall I try to uninstall and reinstall the application.
The erratic sync feature is definitly the most critical issue to fix by Apple.
Not supporting long labels & playlists is more a kind of "nice to have", although I agree these would be very useful.
Concern iMap, I did not have any major concern up to now with it (I do not use it so often, but it worked well at each occasion).

  • Why is the new Illustrator so buggy?! Is anyone else having this problem?

I am wasting so much time waiting for the program. The things that nearly crash it are, "moving linked images", opening my layers panel, selecting linked images, clicking off linked images will even stop everything.

I am running on an iMac QuadCore i7 processor with 16GB RAM and the 1TB fusion drive. According to the specs the computer isn't the problem. When illustrator is thinking, I can open an internet window, make edits in PS, open and play iTunes, while downloading something...all while illustrator is frozen. I am having most trouble with links. simple selecting a linked image (full frame, high res), inside a clipping mask stops illustrator for a good 5 minutes. Then releasing the clipping mask takes another 5. Any idea what is happening?
