Why is wicd-curses maxing out my CPU?

Hi, all--
I wrote a much more detailed post, but got auto-logged-out and lost it all, and I'm out of time. So for now I will just pose the question, and if you would like more detail I'll check back later and fill in the blanks.
So I have this Asus EEE netbook, and I am connected to my own wireless router at home, and AFAIK this is the only device connected (my router is "secured" with WPA2). Signal strength is showing at about 79%, and I the connection is on channel 5, which nobody else within range is using. And, according to 'top', wicd-curses is using 93-98% of the CPU! The next most resoure-intensive process is Firefox, at about 1-2%.
Oh, and I have wicd-1.7.2.4-4. And just by way of full disclosure, I know my system is overdue for an upgrade. There's a reason for that, which I'll tell you later if you want to know, but I realize that upgrading might solve the problem. Nonetheless I am really curious about this, because I just can't imagine what could be causing it.
Thanks!

Sounds like a memory leak in ncurses which is used to draw wicd-curses. How long has wicd-curses been running when it gets to that level?
As you say, Update! If that doesn't fix the problem then it might be something else.

  • Why is the latest update maxing out my CPU

After my Firefix updated the last time to 14.0.1, it has been totally unusable. As soon as it starts it just about maxes out my CPU's. Trying to do anything in it is impossible, menus take 4-5 seconds before they open. If I can get to a web site, trying to scroll down a web page takes several seconds to wait for each click to respond. Even typing in information takes several seconds between key strokes.
I've been a long time user of Firefox, but this has been the worse update and I'm preparing to move to another browser.

What kind of images are causing the problems?
Did you check that it isn't caused by JavaScript that is running on those pages?

  • Why is CORE AUDIO maxxing out my CPU

Not sure where to ask this question? My Menumeter app shows my CPU is maxxed out when I boot up - when I check with Activity Monitor it shows it's Core Audio. I can QUIT IT and then my CPU drops down to where it should be... Is my BOSS GS-10 Interface causing this or what? I use the newest USB drivers but it seems like this all started with the 10.5.7 update. Anyone have any ideas where I can look or do? I use Logic a lot with my guitar (recording) so I really can't quit Core Audio. Also how do I restart it - right now I have to keep rebooting...

I assume by booting up you mean starting the Mac, not Logic, right?
First you can try if it is the interface, by starting up with it disconnected.
Second, when you start Logic, do things change? Or does the CPU keep maxing out? And how do your projects play back?

  • Why does my memory max out at 70% (using iStat) @ 2x1GB RAM 667mhz

    Hi,
I'm using iStat as a monitoring service and I have 2x1gb RAM installed and a 2.4 core2duo processor. I run multiple programs at once (Firefox, Dropbox, MS Office, iTunes) and my memory hovers around 71% all the time (it gets sluggish around 70%). It never has gone up or past 74%. I figure it should max out around 100% right? I recently upgraded to 2x2gb or 667 memory. Will I still have the same problem of hitting a threshold? How do I get rid of this ceiling? Thanks!

    Hi bmose14,
I'm not entirely sure how iStat Pro monitors RAM (I always use Activity Monitor for that) but I know Snow Leopard changed how RAM is monitored. Previously in Leopard if you had, for example, 2GB of total RAM it would show that as available and then just immediately allocate the RAM that's being addressed by the GPU. But in Snow Leopard, I find that I have 1.75GB of total RAM (as it doesn't calculate the 256MB of VRAM my shared GPU is allocated).
I'm thinking you have the Intel GMA X3100 GPU (144MB of RAM) and as such that's being calculated here, in addition to the RAM being used by the programs and OS. With that being said, I don't think you can ever reach the 100% mark. I know I fired up iStat Pro on my machine (prior to responding) and I'm also hovering around ~80% despite Activity Monitor showing about the same as "green" in the pie chart.

  • Why does Photos max out my CPU?

Just "upgraded" to 10.10.3 on my MacBook Pro and converted to Photos.  Every time Photos is open, a couple of seconds later, the fan is running full-bore and only stops when I close Photos.  I looked at Activity Monitor, and it is clear Photos is crushing my CPU (see attached screen shot).  What's happening?  Why is Photos crushing my CPU?  Thanks!

    Let it run.
See the replies at > Photo is causing such high CPU usage
The 50+ GB Library on my i5 Mac took less than 2 hours to settle down. The same 50+ GB on my 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo took almost 3 hours.

  • What are hiutil and mdworker? - they're maxing out the CPU!!

So I upgraded this afternoon to Lion on my 13" macbook air from the App Store; first of all the reboot crashed, then a hard off and back on sorted that out.
Now hiutil (and sometimes mdworker) are trashing the CPU constantly at 90-100% (and making the fan go crazy with it)
Anyone have any idea what these threads are?
My MBA is now unusable because of these!!
    Cheers, Simmo

mdworker is the Spotlight indexer. Spotlight is a bit wonky in Lion (as it was in SL 10.6.0)…be patient; it might not be fixed until 10.7.2 or so. If you don't use Spotlight, consider turning it off in SysPrefs. It'll cut that process.
hiutil seems to be a low-level process for Help pages. It's probably indexing those (to get the snappy search results from the Help menu).

  • G5DP - Maxing out one CPU

Why is it that when I get system overload errors, looking at the Audio side of the System Performance window, I see one of my processors going right to the top, while the other stays no where near the top?
Just trying to understand why Logic is pushing one of the processors (to the point of causing errors) and not the other.
Is there anything I can do to spread things around?

I didn't look at your jpg at all. I was just explaining the way that logic appears to use the two processors - and that if one particular instrument is being processed by one processor, then that single instrument alone could cause CPU overloads even if there is plenty of juice remaining in the other one.
btw, the EXS24, when using a library with very large samples (like vienna strings) can indeed easily spike a CPU to overload as the polyphony rises.
things you can do to alleviate this are:
limit the polyphony in the EXS24 instance to what you only need, in order to manage note decays vs CPU usage.
enable disk streaming on the EXS24
change your i/o buffer setting to something higher. if you have it at 64 or lower, your general CPU overhead is much higher.
avoid instanciating plug ins directly on audio instruments, as the lack of pre-buffering (because the plug in has to be processed in absolute realtime) causes higher CPU usage.

  • I want to roll ff back to 3.0, 4.0 and up is taking up to much space to run. since i have updated to 5.0 the problem is killing my laptop and i liked how well 3.0 ran, it didnt max out my cpu like 4.0 and up does.

firefox is using up to 90% of my PCU on my laptop. I spend more time twiddling my thumbs waiting for things to load or i watch my laptop crash from over heating. I did not have this problem with 3.0 and would like to go back to it, how do I roll back firefox to 3.0 so my laptop doesnt burn up ? i run vista on my laptop.

In case your Firefox profile became damaged during the upgrade, or add-on is causing the problem, you could test whether a new blank Firefox profile cures those ills.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, close Firefox and fire up the profile manager to create a new profile: [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles Managing profiles].
If that tests out, you can import your bookmarks and move your saved passwords over from your problem profile to the new profile. [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Recovering+important+data+from+an+old+profile Recovering important data from an old profile].
If that fails, here's the process to roll back:
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
    Close Firefox 5.
You could install Firefox 3.6 over it (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this myself!

  • Why does analog output max out at only 2 V when I connect my device?

I have a device that works on LabVIEW 6 (Win-NT machine), switching over to Vista, LabVIEW2009, with PCIe-6323.  the voltage output signal control works fine on the NT machine over the full range of 0-10V.  On the LabVIEW 2009/Vista machine, open AO channels work properly from -10 to 10 V in MAX.  But when I connect the device - the same device that works just fine on LabVIEW6 - It only works up to ~2V.  For example - I enter 1.5 V - i read 1.5 V.  I anything from 2.2-10V, and I get 2.2 V.  If I disconnect the device, I get output voltage that I enter in the Task test panel.
How can I get it to run the full -10 to 10 V?

The way that the scaling works for DAQmx tasks changed somewhere between DAQmx 7.? and DAQmx 8.8.
At least it did for analog inputs anyway.
Check if any scale is applied to your analog output task. Try changing it.

  • Sppsvc is maxing out cpu core

I don't understand why sppsvc has such high CPU usage all the time. When you run loads of virtual machines, it's basically maxing out the CPU. All the windows server installations seem to have this problem (guests and hosts). I haven't installed

  • Macbook Air 2011 CPU Maxes Out then Overheats and Shuts Down...

I've been having this problem for a while now but have learned to deal with it with SMC Fan Control to basically keep my fans maxed out at all times. This is obviously not ideal.
The problem is that at any given time some small, random task in activity monitor shows CPU usage that is very high, often at least 50% CPU and other times as high as 120% It has happened with the tasks like dock, safari web content and virtually any other task you can imagine.
For example, I just tried emptying my recycling bin and it hung half way through then my computer shut down. What is going on here?
    Details:
    - Macbook Air mid-2011 running Mavericks
    - Never have more than one app open at any given time, usually just Safari with about 5 tabs, max
    - 3rd party applications running in background include Dropbox, Copy, Backblaze, Flux, Sophos anti virus, Jumpcut, Caffeine and that's it
If I'm doing something like a Time Machine backup, I have to disable Wifi, max out the fans and only then will the Macbook Air remain cool enough to complete the backup, otherwise the Time Machine process maxes out the CPU, overheats and shuts down. This happens with virtually everything now.
How can I start trouble shooting this problem? I've run the hardware and system repair checks with no results, done an SMC reset, etc.
This really seems like a software issue more than anything, like something related to the way tasks/processes are handled...any ideas anyone? This is such an annoying problem!

Do the problems also occur in "Safe Mode"?
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • OS X 10.4.3 Processes that Max out CPU

Everything was running perfectly normal until I upgraded to 10.4.3. I first noticed that my hard drive continually made noises as if it was accessing something. Secondly, I observed that after a half hour or so of using my computer, it would become unusable because everything would be so slow. I soon began to question what was the source of this and opened the Activity Moniter and realized that certain applications would automatically bring the CPU usage up to %100. This greatly affected my battery performance (ibook G4). I began to record which applications would max out the CPU and have come up with the following list (although I haven't had time to run through all applications):
    • Safari
    • Widgets
    • "WindowsServer" (Mail)
    • Dictionary
I am now using Firefox and refuse to use any of these applications (even though I need to sometimes). Is anyone else seeing this sort of pattern since they upgraded to 10.4.3 and if so have you found a solution? Or could it simply be a bad update (for some of us) that will simply be fixed in 10.4.4? If it is more than a isolated incedent, I hope that Apple will take note of this problem as it is adversly effecting their products performance.
    -Erik

Erik I don't think 10.4.3 is the cause of your CPU acting the way it is, when you upgraded did check, and repair permissions before and after? if not do so go to the activity monitor and check on all process to see if you can find the problem there. Please post back with your results.

  • 10.5.5 - AFP maxes out CPU usage

Since installing the 10.5.5 update on our Intel Xserves, one sharing AFP Home directories will periodically begin to max out its CPU usage, this seems to happen every 2 or 3 days.
Over the space of an hour or two, CPU usage of the AppleFileServer process will increase from floating around 5% - 25% to a solid 400% (it's a Dual, Quad Xeon server so that's one whole CPU).
As an experiment, I manually disconnected all connected users (about 75 connections, 40ish that were not idle). CPU usage remained a steady 400% with 0 client connections.
Issuing a serveradmin stop afp, gives the response 'AFP Status: STOPPED' as it should, but in actually fact the process is still there. Clicking 'Stop' via ServerAdmin.app has no effect either.
The only thing that seems to work is a reboot (currently I have scheduled a 'shutdown -r now' for 1am every day).
Like I said, no problems with AFP prior to 10.5.5.
I hope there is a fix for this in 10.5.6 as it is a major problem.

Same problem here with AFP. Seems to be even worse with 10.5.6. I have two servers with home directories both doing the same thing. Only a restart seems to stop it. We also have SMB, windows users, disconnected on a random basis. Everyone may get disconnected or about 1/2 of them. This happens once or twice a week. If we use server admin to change any ACL's the SMB users also get disconnected. We are looking at switching back to Windows servers. We have had these issues since switching our home directories last summer. We have been working with a local vendor and Apple SE with no resolutions.
