Why is Winclone Needed? Can't Disk Utility Restore a Boot Camp Partition?

Hi. Could we just use Disk Utility to create a backup the Boot Camp Partition running Windows 7 64-bit for example and then just use Disk Utility to restore it if you need to replace your Boot Camp partition?
Why is Winclone the tool use to create an image of Boot Camp partition as well as to restore a Boot Camp partition? Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the reply. How about if you opt for the non compressed image, the DVD/CD Master option (Image Format) when you do the New Image in Disk Utility? Would choosing the DVD/CD Master option be cloning it instead of archiving it? If the images created by Disk Utility are not the exact copy or clone then, it won't be bootable I believe but how come when you create an image of a DVD (to back it up for example) and burn that image, it is bootable which mean it copies it exactly (clone it in effect)?
What does WinClone do or copy exactly that Disk Utility can't?

Does Winclone still work to restore a Boot Camp partition?

I have a 50GB Boot Camp partition, NTFS file system, with Windows XP. My computer is a Mac Pro running OS X 10.6.5. I have been using Winclone to clone the Boot Camp partition as a backup. I know that Winclone is no longer supported, and have heard that Winclone may not work properly with Snow Leopard.
I have no problem creating an image of the Boot Camp partition using Winclone. I have not yet had to do a restore to a new partition, but assume that some day I may need to do so.
My question is: Has anyone running Snow Leopard successfully used Winclone to restore a Boot Camp partition?
A secondary question: Is there any other utility, running on the Mac side, that will clone/restore a Boot Camp partition?

Good luck to you. I am trying to transfer/migrate my Bootcamp partition (XP pro, FAT32) to a larger HD. I tried Winclone, and like you could create an image, but am unable to restore it on the new drive. I get the same error that you do. I tried creating a Bootcamp partition, rather than having Winclone do it, but would get this error in the log:
Source image volume size is not an exact multiple of 1 MiB
This happened whether I used Bootcamp Assistant or Disk Utility to create the partition, and it didn't matter whether I used a larger partition size or attempted to match the existing one. Apparently Winclone measures the block-sizes differently than Finder, Terminal, or any other measurement that I have used reports.
I've read about suggestions to turn my old FAT-32 Bootcamp Parition into an NFTS one, but I'm loathe to do that since I have on idea if that will work.

Copying a disk which has a boot camp partition

Colleague has an iMac with a boot camp partition, and the disk has failed. It won't boot off the mac partition, although the windows partition works fine. He bought a new 1T disk and we are trying to copy his disk on to it, and will then install the new disk into the iMac.
So it's booted up using the SnowLeopard install disk and I am running disk utility. First I tried to partition the disk into something that looks like the partition scheme on the current disk -- big partition for os x, little partition for windows, although big & little are 750GB vs 250GB as opposed to the smaller version on the 260GB original.
Then I tried to use the Restore to go from the old bootcamp partition to the new MS-DOS (fat) partition on the new drive. This failed. First it resized the fat partition down to an ever-so-slightly smaller partition than the NTFS original, and then generated an error because the partition is too small.
How do we do this?

Well moving the new disk in to the iMac is one of the tasks we need to accomplish, so we can do it now. My plan was to use dd to move the data from the partition on the old drive to the partition on the new drive, once we can get Boot Camp Assistant to create it. Winclone looks like a great product, but it's $29. Parallels is only $79, and if a disk fails or you migrate to new hardware all of the Parallels vms come over effortlessly using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant.

Can I recovery Lion with a Boot Camp partition?

Yes, you can. Your Boot Camp partition is unaffected by installing or reinstalling OS X on a different partition.
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select Macintosh HD volume from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. Can i "copy" a 200 GB boot camp partition from Mac Pro to MBP?

i spent a lot of time working with virtual machines and i have decided i simply have to increase the size of my mac pro HD and put a boot camp partition in it.
can i COPY a 200 GB windows 7 boot camp partition from my 1 TB Mac Pro drive to a 200 GB partition on my MBP that will have a 500 GB drive?
this would let me focus on doing a full install and full setup on the Mac Pro and just copy this over to the MBP (when i get the new drive) saving me a ton o time.

Can't install Windows 7 on Boot Camp partition

I ran the Boot Camp application and it formatted a partition but when I try to install Windows 7 Home Premium full version it says the partition is invalid. There was no option to choose NTFS or FAT and now the installer is telling me that the partition is not NTFS.
What should I do?

Yup. Windows will not install when there are other drives present that have GPT.
Very old simple to just remove until later.
If you were installing to the same drive as OS X (prefer not to of course) still need to pull the drives temporarily until after Windows is done.
you do not need a new drive. You can just format the drive now that you were going to use:
Disk Utility: Partition: 1 or more, does not matter: Advanced: Options - choose MBR Windows partition table format. Click Apply. Then Apply again.
When in Windows 7, choose the entire drive - Advanced Options and delete what DU created! let Windows do its thing - no need to create or format if you deleted / removed those partitions.

Cancelled Boot Camp Partition, Now Disk Capacity Reduced

Hi, i was partitioning my MacBook Air to install windows 7, but after an hour it just froze, so I force quit Boot Camp and the space was gone. I tried the SL/Lion solution and the space is still GONE! What can I do to recover it? Disk Utility won't work :C

I call it nuked and only a slim chance of retrieve or survival, so my vote is to use the backup you made and go ahead and erase the drive and restore it to how it was, or clone your Mac volume and boot from there and restore, maybe even zero the drive to help check for disk errors.
If you need help cloning, Disk utility Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner can do the trick.

Repairing permissions after an update or upgrade is harmless, but I would question the need to do it even there. The Apple update itself should set the correct Permissions. I still do this, really as a hangover from Tiger days -- not certain it was really ever needed there either -- and because it's a habit that's hard to kick, but it's never found anything to repair...but for one buggy exception, which was the 10.5.8 Combo update. Running it once and then repairing Permissions created a real error. It was discovered the Combo needed to be run twice back to back and then Permissions repair. In fact, one would have been better off not running Permissions for that update to begin with. There it wasn't harnless.

NEED HELP! Disk Utility mixed up HD and erased 2TB of data!

I just encountered a disaster thanks to disk utility and am asking for your help. PLEASEEEEEEE

Here is the short story. Like any semi-computer nerd, I have a lot of external harddrives for all my work. One was having issues and showed symptoms of a break down. So I backed-up everything on the drive and tried to reformat it. Half-way through, disk utility seemed to get stuck or something. The bar did not progress, and the estimated time to complete continued to go up. After about two hours, I needed to grab some files off another harddrive. No big deal. I left the harddrive being reformatted still plugged in, so the process would continue undisturbed. In the second USB port, I plugged in an expansion port with 2 other external harddrives connected to it. ...Within seconds, literally seconds, diskutility erased one of the new harddrives and renamed it. I'm not kidding. It happened so fast, I couldn't stop it. It worked faster then I've ever seen DiskUtility erase a drive…10…20 seconds max. I lost 2 terrabits of files. Information, files and personal documents that cannot be replaced. This is a huge disaster!
Is there anyway to fix this? Is the restore image feature in disk utility bring back files? Worst of all, there is no reasonable argument for why disk utility mixed it up. I never unplugged the drive it was reformating. I never touched the program or clicked anything. And how did it mix them up? You have to select the drive explicitly that you want to erase. One was a Western Digital HD and the other aSeagate, both with different names, models and serial numbers. Computers don't simply mix up drives. It's coded. Second, how could it erase the drive so fast? It never even mounted. By the time the new drive appeared, it was already erased and renamed.
This is huge. I cannot replace these files. Does anyone know how to fix this?

8) Attempted to restart with literature saying that you can restart Disk Utility as though it would delete temp files and start again. System could not be found (folder/face/folder/face showed on the screen)
You really shouldn't use a lower OSes DU to work on a higher one.
2) Used Disk Warrior to rebuild directory on disk, but I believe that there is NO space at all. Disk Warrior took a very long time...more than an hour.

Disk Utility Restore - Why error -34 ?

I cloned my 700 G3 iBook's 20GB hard drive to a 30GB ext. HD with Disk Utility>Restore before sending it for repair. Now that I have gotten it back I want to restore the data to the computer's HD. I'm getting error -34 (disk full).
So what is the nature of my problem? Must the destination disk be at least as big as the source disk? (Because it is copying the entire 30GB size.) Or must I empty (erase, reformat) the destination disk? (Because it is adding the data to what is already there.)

While I had made back-up clones before, this was the first time I needed to put it back into the computer's hard drive.

Can I use the Leopard Disk Utility to repair a Tiger partition?

I have a multi-partition external disk, one partition has Tiger installed on it, while others have Leopard. (I used Leopard to partition the drive and then used SuperDuper! to copy my earlier Tiger backup from another disk to this disk.) Now I find I have errors on the partition with Tiger. Can I use the Disk Utility tool from my Leopard install to repair the Tiger partition? Earlier today I tried to boot from my Tiger install DVD and use the Disk Utility there to repair the partition, but it just hangs up and won't go forward.

You could use it, but if Tiger's Disk Utility couldn't fix it, it's doubtful Leopard's would fix it as well. You're better off using Disk Warrior from Alsoft.com.

Yes. I'll post a link to instructions. Be sure to create a full reliable backup before you begin (don't just do the backup, test the backup to be sure it's good), and the only application that should be running until the process is complete is Disk Utility.

Some people have problems resizing partitions because of the hidden Recovery HD partition. It sometimes gets in the way because Disk Utility can move it "up" but cannot move it "down".

How to clone disk (Disk Utility Restore, boot: kernel panic)

Hi, I've tried two times to clone my 120GB system disk (old Core2Duo Mac Mini (macmini2,1)) to a 1TB disk attached via USB cradle. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which long time ago was upgraded from Leopard.
Used the Disk Utility "Restore" for cloning. Both times Disk Utility completed without errors. However when I swap the 1TB from USB cradle into mac mini (to internal SATA), the result of even a "Save Mode" boot attempt with Shift/Mod key held is always a kernel panic: "unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI\"
As my goal is to clone the existing system to a larger drive, a new install of OS X on the 1TB drive is out of the question. The original 120GB disk boots without problems. But the cloned attempts do not boot.
Judging from the kernel panic it is as if "Restore" doesn't actually restore, but leaves out files. Thus Disk Utility restore in SL is buggy?
Or is my cloning method wrong? Currently I just drag the 120GB system disk (the live running system) to the Source, then drag the 1TB USB disk to Destination, and allow full erase of destination, and do the priviledge elevation to root i.e. the usual password prompt. Does successful cloning need something extra...?

If I understand correctly, what you're doing is copying your 120 GB drive to the 1 TB drive, then swapping the 1 TB drive into your Mac and trying to boot from it, and it fails.
You're doing it wrong, and that's why it fails. A Finder copy (what you're doing) does not respect permissions or symbolic links, which are required to make the system boot. You need to use something that does respect that.
Get your hands on a copy of SuperDuper http://shirtpocket.com/
(free for basic use, but it's well worth the small fee of $27.95 for full access to all features); and/or
Carbon Copy Cloner http://bombich.com
and use one of those to make a bootable clone of your 120 GB drive, then you can boot from it.

Disk Utility: MediaKit reports no such partition

What is up with my disk?
On my brand new mac mini, I played around with resizing partitions in Disk Utility, it worked fine, and I eventually returned it to the original single-partition state.
Then, I ran boot camp, and told it to create a 10 GB partition.
Then, I installed Linux (64-bit Ubuntu) -- from the Linux installer I deleted the windows partition, and a zero-size partition before it, and put Linux swap and ext3 partitions in that space.
Now, from the mac side, if I try to shrink the boot partition again, I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition".
Help? One potentially related anomaly is that Disk Utility shows my Linux ext3 partition format as "MS-DOS (FAT)" but the "fdisk" command correctly lists it as "Linux files*"
Another disturbing thing is that if I type "sudo pdisk" on the Macintosh command line, and give the 'L' command to list partitions on all disks, pdisk exits with the error "Floating point exception"

It doesn't sound like you've actually tried reformatting the entire drive, just resizing partitions. There is absolutely no reason why mountability should enter into the picture at all since you can't format a drive if any volumes are mounted.
