Why is wireless connection slower than PC?

I just received my new Macbook Pro today but the wireless download speed is about 1.6 mbps compared to about 5.0 mbps on a Dell notebook I have. Both are at my house on the same network. Is there an adjustment I need to make to the MAC?

I have a wired comcast modem that I run through a router to an airport (original). I get wildly different results on broadband speed depending on the test service I try.
I just found one called "Speakeasy" (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/) that lets me test my speed to different cities. I live in the Philadelphia area. My speed was greatest (4.7 Mbs) to Washington DC, abou 4 MBS to NYC, 3 to Atlanta and only about 1.2 to San Francisco. These values were reproducible. Upload ranged between 684-715.
Before I got a new modem from Comcast (my old one was from the time they started service here about 6 years ago) my speed was MUCH slower.
Also, using my son's 12"PB G4 his speeds are slower, too, possibly because of the signal/antenna issue.
So, for me I would say to try several services to find one that is reproducible, then test both your machines again. If the PC is plastic then it will get better reception than the Aluminum MBP. Otherwise, some of the other answers here (e.g., change modem) may be useful.

  • Why is MBA connection 'slower' than iBook?

    Hello,
I'm based in a fairly rural part of the UK.
I have a broadband connection with BT (British Telecom). Whilst not the fastest in the world, it's been more than adequate.
I have a Netgear router (a fairly old and basic model) plugged into the main telephone socket.
Since using my new MB Air, I'd suspected that the internet connection I'm now getting is slower.
I've run some speed tests this evening using http://speedtest.net/, comparing the MB Air to my wife's iBook (a couple of years old now).
Both are connecting via AirPort and are sat on my desk - the same distance from the router.
Here are the download speeds from the last 4 tests I've run (made over the course of an hour - but with a test on one machine being made straight after the other)...
    iBook:
    975 kb/s
    516 kb/s
    547 kb/s
    970 kb/s
    MB Air:
    185 kb/s
    93 kb/s
    181 kb/s
    311 kb/s
As you can see, the MB Air seems to be consistently slower.
I absolutely love my MB Air BUT it is frustrating to have such a slow connection speed.
    Can anyone suggest a solution?
    With thanks,
    Simon

It's anyone's guess.  Startup and shutdown as well as application launches take longer in Lion than they did in Snow Leopard on the three Macs that I "upgraded," and I also see the spinning beach ball more often than I used to.  Add to that the HDMI-related crashes on my Mac mini...
Quite frankly, I have yet to see where I have gained any advantages after upgrading to Lion, and I definititely have problems that I didn't have under Snow Leopard.  Of course, all of it must be my fault, as Apple would never ever relase an upgrade that was less than perfect.

  • New Macbook Pro Wireless is slower than Old G5 Tower

Less than 2 months out of the box, my 15 inch 2.4Ghz Intel Macbook Pro started acting up.
First, waking it from sleep mode seemed to take longer than normal (5 to 10 seconds?).
Then one day, the battery just went kaput. I did a hardware test and got a hit. Called Apple and they mailed me a new battery in less than 24 hours.
The battery works great. But the sleep thing still seems to take longer than it should.
But the real thing that worries me is how SLOW the wireless connection is... at home, as well as on other people's networks. At home I have an Airport Extreme (not the latest square-shaped model, but the one that looks like a flying saucer). And my G5 Tower dual 1.8 wireless loads pages faster than my Macbook Pro.
I'm no expert, but that's just wrong.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

that's a good point too, if I'm getting you. People will be putting, quite understandably, in their G5 HDs into their MPs. Tech changes and so too the well being of HDs. It would pay in the end to do a really thorough job of making sure an HD is OK and working well.
Why is it so hard or impossible for Migration Assistant to have "smart" update and know the source is PPC and Apple Partition Table.
Because, I think, they were more concerned with the new machines than the old ones and their users. It didn't slow them down enough to consider the problems new users from G5s would go through.
Bunch of funky stuff all over the place if one looks hard enough, or encounters an extended "bad" day on their Macs. Shows me the tech is still so new and evolving, it seems it will never be complete. And I still think this is only the beginning in the Computer Age. If we make it, these things are going to change the face of the planet, for the better, if we use them right.

  • 2007 Macbook Pro, Wireless connection slows to a crawl or drops out!

Hi all, I have recently started having problems with my 2007 15" 2.16ghz Macbook Pro and the wireless connection to my router.
Quite often it will say I am not connected to the network, the Airport symbol will fluctuate between full bars and no bars and when it does connect, the speed is awfully slow, it regularly hangs on a webpage for a few seconds before loading it up.
It is not the router as my Girlfriend has a white macbook and when I am experiencing problems she is not. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be the problem, is the wireless card on it's way out??
    btw the airport details are:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)
    Wireless Card Locale: Worldwide
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.10.3
    Current Wireless Network: SKY10597
    Wireless Channel: 2
    Thanks, Nick

You might try a different channel, but the iBook result belies there being a high probability of success using this approach. You could try a different browser. Does the problem also occur when you are very close to the WAP? Your card might be old enough to be malfunctioning. Given the recent experiences of others, I don't recommend doing any updates in trying to solve the problem. Have you done any Airport related updates lately?

  • Is wireless internet slower than cable internet?

I don't have wireless internet yet. I plan on going wireless, and I might buy airport express. A friend at work told me wireless internet is slower than cable internet.
Is he right? He doesn't own a Mac, but I don't know if that matters. And if he is right, just how right is he? A little slower? A lot?
    Thanks!
    Lindsay

    Duane, thanks!
I have a follow-up. You mentioned the slower one and the faster one. How do I make sure I have the faster one? I'm either going to buy a macbook or a macbook pro. Is there some upgrade? Is there an airport upgrade? Is the faster one more expensive?
    Thanks again.

  • Why is FF8 WAY slower than FF7 or IE9

Upgraded to FireFox 8 when it came up as an upgrade. And then Firefox slowed WAY down, and everything else slowed down some too... A speed test from Road Runner showed 1.62 Mbps in FF8 and 51.72 Mbps in IE9... and it affected wireless more than wired. And when I looked it up, someone said they had similar issues and went back to FF7 to fix it, and someone else said that FF8 is the security fix to FF8 so not a good thing to go back to FF7, but this thing is USELESS the way FF8 works now.

May I know what is the correct length then?

  • Why is my connection slow all of a sudden?

So for the past 4 days I've had really slow internet speeds. I normally have 250kbps download speed but for the past for days I've only been getting 30kbps? I've restarted my laptop. Done a virus scan... even tried fully resetting the modem, but still nothing. It's happening on the main computer in my house too so it's not just my laptop. However last month I did download LOADS infact maybe the most I've ever downloaded... Could they of capped me? When do they stop it?

How do I check the information? Also one more thing I tried using my other router too, but it still had the same speed.

  • Why are first connections slow and subsequent ones very slow or won't connect?

Since upgrading initial connections are often slow and subsequent connections very slow or won't connect. I have had to revert to Internet explorer which works fine!

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.
You can try to decrease the value of the pref <b>network.http.max-connections</b> from 255 to a more modest setting like 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

  • My wireless is slower than my wired

I'm sure this is asked on a daily basis by new MacBook Pro owners, but, here goes - I have 35/35 FIOS Internet and my wireless is beyond affected by some unknown anomaly that causes it to cap around 20 Mbps.  My Ethernet port gets the full 41 Mbps, but wireless never exceeds 20 Mbps.  Why?  This is a huge issue for me.  No other devices I have are suffering from this.
    Help is much appreciated.

I have this EXACT same problem!! Same FiOS 35/35, Through an ethernet I cap at 41Mbps but wireless is stuck between 13-20Mbps. I really would love for this to get figured out!!!!!

  • Why is C# code slower than Javascript code?

I'm porting a Javscript to C#, for deployment and management issues, but I have an issue which I cannot figure out;  A same function written in C# is ten times slower compared to Javascript.
For example, I wrote a Javascript which changes the size of every images within the current InDesign document, and it takes about 10 seconds. In C#, via InDesign classes, it takes about 2 minutes.
I think this is because of the real-time update whenever a document is opened. Duration is nearly the same with Javascript when I set property:visible to false.
I tried what I can, but failed. Any help would be very grateful.
    Thank you.

You have to know more about this to work out from reply 2 what the answer to reply 1 is -- "Are you using A or B? Yes." -- And while I'm not faced with the problem, I am interested in the answer.
Ah, I think I'm reading the "duration" comment in the OP wrongly: I think you mean that switching document-visibility property to false causes the C# to run fast. I read it as though you meant JavaScript got slower.
Bear in mind that must of the activity in this kind of code is in the interactions with the Object Model and then with the UI if it is active. The code in the script is going to zip through its part no matter which language (assuming reasonable competence).
Not sure this helps, but I am fascinated by the COM vs. SOAP question and the implications of that.

  • Why is PS 2014 slower than PS CC on some video and GIF operations on my machine?

When I try to make gifs in 2014, I click import> video frames to layers and it takes much more time to load than CC did. Then, when I finally choose the video I want to convert into frames, it takes MORE time loading. Honestly I am thinking about going back to CC.

  • Why does Lion run slower than Snow Leopard?

I recently loaded Lion on my older MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo, with 4 GB 677 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. and it runs slower and the it seems to be hotter and consume more battery power. Are the configuration option that can reduce the power drain?

You may have some mildly-incompatible third-party software, or you may be doing tasks that demand a lot of RAM and 4 GB is no longer enough on a system that has double the memory requirements of SL.  Or could be something else entirely.  Take a look at Understanding upgrade nightmares* for more information and some potential solutions.

  • Why is DB2 (much) slower than Oracle?

Just performed a NW7.01 ECC6.04 Hetro migration Oracle 10G -> DB2 9.7.003. AIX 6.1 Power 5 -> AIX6.1 on Power 7, extra CPUs and extra memory.  Everything is going well, except peformance is not as we had wished.
The new host has penty of horsepower (2times old) both CPU, Memory and IO (by way of an XIV disk array)
Can see plenty of batch jobs running in SAP (sm50) but can see infrastructure (Power 7, XIV disk array) running not even at 50% of CPU capacity and hovering around 10~20%of maximal IO demonstrated capacity. Indexing seems similar and query paths similar to Oracle.  20GB RAM allocated to DB2 instance (single central instance). DB is 1.5TB.
What is seems is that DB2 is not asking enough of the infrastructure, the old power5 system was driven harder by Oracle, ie it appears that Oracle was better at extracting more data in a single thread (disp+work) than DB2. This is particular apparent in sequential reads ( index range scans).
Any suggestions to force DB2 to make better use of the system resources available to it?

    Dear Glenn,
First check that your parameter settings as as recommended in SAP note 1329179 DB2 V9.7 Standard Parameter Settings
We also have now a very usefull parameter check tool:

Have you schedule any go-live checks or earlywacth sessions with SAP to check for perfomance optimization possibilities?
