Why is Xmonad so beautiful? (Discussion about tiling WMs)

About a week ago I started to use Xmonad - and I am highly impressed! The complete work flow is a breeze, I don't have to keep track of all my hundreds of programs anymore - at least the way I used to.
Everything is arranged, nice and neatly. It is the first time I am actually taking advantage of the possibilities offered by having different workspaces!
Starting with Windows 95 (I was just 6 years or so old), then later with Windows 98 and Windows XP I was used to work with only one workspace, alt+tabbing my way through the clutter of windows being spread all over. After my switch to GNU/Linux (Ubuntu at that time) this didn't really change, although there were different workspace. It was the same with Openbox or KDE later one. The possibility was there, but it just didn't come natural to work like that.
But with those tiling WMs I am seriously spoiled! Just after this very week I am already having a hard time adopting to a classic floating WM again.
Now I just wonder - how come tiling WMs aren't widely used these days? Is it because Microsoft didn't support them? Or Apple?
When did tiling WMs actually emerge? And do you think there is a chance for them to get widely accepted, even among non-techsavvy people?
Or for those who are using Floating WMs - did you ever try a tiling WM? Are you planning to? If you tried one, why aren't you using it?
What do guys think is the major advantage of tiling WMs over floating WMs and vice versae?
I would like to hear some opinions.

slackhack wrote:I thought about using a tiling WM, but I use mostly browsers and other gtk2 gui apps, with terminals secondarily. tiling WMs seemed better if you primarily use terminals, am I wrong about that? It just seems like I would feel constricted or restrained not being able to move windows around, resize them, etc.  what's the best tiling WM to try? Awesome?
Hell no. I recommend xmonad. You can intergrate any DE you want too,

I'm running gnome when procrastinating and dwm when procrastinating with scripts and lots of terminal work.
* A clear indication of lack of basic Haskell l33tness. I did enjoy running Xmonad after a week of tinkering, though.
I think that your statement is not true anymore. the dwm configuration file has been constantly changing for like half a year or so which is very irritating. also the attempt to intergrate xinerama support with all those xv, yv 's or what they were called was very funny, and frustrating to say the least. also see my response to slackhack.
Even though xmonad is written in haskell, and i dont know  any haskell, its the only serious tiling window manager left out there.
maybe wmii too. dwm is probably still a good base to build your own kickass wm.

  • Tiling WMs - Management style

Can someone explain what that means
I checked this comparo of tiling WMs and the only clue I got was this obscure statement
The user must manually move windows around.
Can someone elaborate on it? What does it mean to the actual user? If I am moving the windows manually as a user(whatever that means), what do the other Tiling WMs that have a dynamic management style do differently?

Dynamic - the wm places the windows according to the layout you choose (awesome , xmonad, dwm etc)

Why not try them out and understand the difference?
I am trying them out. I have currently installed awesome, dwm and wmii to see which suits me. well I removed awesome when I saw on the wiki that the recommended is awesome-git and I had installed it from the repo. So I will be installing the git version tonight.
Its just that once I get into those WMs, there is hardly anything that I can do since I don't know the shortcuts to do anything. Last night I logged into dwm and the only thing I could do was hard reset -- of course that was because I am a bonehead and not because dwm is lacking.
As dieter@be said, start with wmii, because it has a pretty good tutorial on startup which gives you a pretty good idea about tiling wms. Once you get the idea, try them all and you will find something which will suit you.
In my case i found ion3 to be perfect for my need though it is not that popular among others (may be because of the politics). Ion3 and pekwm both allow hotswapping of window managers so i find using a combination of both to be perfect(you can bind keys to swap windowmanagers on the fly.. which is pretty nice when you want to open gimp or cinepaint).

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.

  • Why lock a perfectly innocuous post about a broken PowerBook hinge?

    Very odd.
Some chap below said that his hinge had broken, that Applecare told him to take it to an Applestore to get them to determine if it was warrantable, but set his expectation that he would spend $500 repairing a 2 year old machine that he did not break.
He asks for advice, mentions that he's furious and the topic is locked.
Seemed like a perfectly reasonable thread to me. Just wondering what terms justify locking that particular thread and stopping that poor chap getting advice from the Apple community.
    Any ideas?

Thanks for the response. I Can't say I agree with your points at all.
    a) Forum for technical problems only?
    This is what Apple say on the subject;
"Apple Discussions is a user-to-user support forum that enables anyone who uses Apple products to meet and discuss various topics, resolve issues, ask questions, get tips and advice, and more".
If what you say about technical problems is written somewhere, perhaps you could point us to it.
Seem to me that he had a mechanical problem, completely legitimate.
He asked for advice on how to deal with the issue he had. He got advice. Nobody told him what to do - when I make a post, usually, the post allows me to decide if I want to mark it answered. His was locked. Doesn't that strike you as a bit strange?
His original question expressed a bit of frustration at being told he'd likely have to pay $500 for what he considered a hardware failure or design fault. He wasn't rude, profane or unreasonable in what he originally wrote, otherwise he wouldn't have got replies.
His follow up to the advice he got was to tell us what he was going to do and to promise to keep us posted.
"Odd thing was I had just used it right before it broke. I simply Opened the screen in the upward direction and heard something almost like a crack. Didn't think much of the noise and when I opened it to its upright position it had broke. That simple. No force whatsoever. Thats the most upsetting part. It's simply rediculous. If this has happened and Apple has received repairs specifically this type, the lightbulb should go on and say, "Hey we have a bunch of people with the SAME EXACT PROBLEM going on here. What can we do to rectify the problem and fix this." It's a simple recall just like what they did with the batteries. Enough people complain and something gets taken care of. Anyway, thanks for the luck. I am taking it to the Apple store this weekend to have them look at it. I will post my experiance as soon as I can. Hope this helps people who have had the SAME problem as me. "
Doesn't sound like whining, sounds like he was going to do something about it and like he wants a resolution to a legitimate complaint in an expensive 2 year old machine. A pretty reasonable response to the advice he got, I thought. He actually went to the trouble of explaining how he experienced the fault as he said "to help people who have had the SAME problem as me"
There are loads of posts here which have been going for months and months asking questions and debating issues - e.g. the Powerbook lines issue for example.
I'm just struggling to understand why someone has locked this particular post. I don't agree with your assertion that the poster is merely whining or has had his problem solved.
    So for the moment I am still wondering;
Why lock a perfectly innocuous post about a broken PowerBook hinge?

After upating from Lion 10.7.4 to 10.7.5, my MacBook Pro will not reboot.  Why?  What can I do about it?

I ended up having to visit an Apple Store.  They claimed that the update must have aggravated an already corrupted hard disk drive.  The solution was to wipe my hard disk (fortunately I had recently backed up on Time Machine).  The "Genius" also claimed this was the first time he had come across the problem.  Although he was clearly able to diagnose it straightaway, and the next person he saw had exactly the same problem with his Mac, and I saw an awful lot of customers queuing up with their Macs and iMacs looking very suspiciously like they all had the same problem!  So clearly Apple know what the problem is but as usual treat customers as if they're idiots in order to cover up the problem.  But at least the problem is now solved (although having to take at trip out and wait in a queue at an Apple store, and then restoring from backups is a painstaking inconvenience I could well have done without).  All I can suggest is that you might as well take it in.  None of the "solutions" on the Forum are remotely on the ball, and all Apple "Geniuses" have clearly been told what the problem is and how to fix it.  Good luck!

  • (Looking for) Old discussion about »best« justification settings

    Hi there!
I seem to remember there once was a vivid discussion about the best working justification settings in the old days of this forum – about 2 or 3 years ago, I would guess. Quoting »justification settings« I mean this tricky palette with minimum, desired and maximum values for word spacing, letter spacing, glyph scaling etc. I believe it was Dave Saunders among others taking part in that discussion ...
Well, the forum search didn’t help me a lot. Is there a chance to find any old discussion here at all?
    Cheers,
    Klaus

I have archives which are not on the forums any longer. I didn't find a post from Dave, but here's some posts from others...
    Ole Kvern:
    Fellow InDesigners,
For whatever it's worth, I start with:
    Word Spacing: 95 / 100/ 140
I never use any letter spacing or glyph scaling (so those settings are at 0/0/0 and 100/100/100, respectively). I turn on optical kerning and use the paragraph composer. I put fairly tight limits on hyphenation.
This approach will sometimes result in overly-wide word spacing, but I've found that a.) wide word spacing is easy to find and fix, and b.) the reader's eye is less sensitive to variation in word spacing than it is to variation in letter spacing.
I look at every line in the book. No matter what your spacing settings are, nothing absolves you from this responsibility.
I think it works pretty well. Your mileage may vary.:-)
    Kenneth Benson:
The "right" values for these settings depends on typeface, size, column
width, hyphenation settings, and the phase of the moon, but most books
use something close to 100% for Desired, something less than but close
to Desired for Minimum, and something greater than Desired for Maximum.
I'm looking at a book now that uses a 27p wide column, 10/12 Sabon, with
Justification settings at 80/100/133, but in this same spec I've seen
90/115/200 and 75/95/150. You need to give the program a range in which
to work; if you tell it to use 100/100/100, all the spaces will be
exactly the same size. The narrower the column, the bigger the type, the
more restrictive the hyphenation settings, the more generous you should
be with min/max settings. The wider the column, the smaller the type,
the less restrictive the hyphenation settings, the more restrictive you
can be with min/max settings. In the end, it comes down to what looks
best. Try a variety of settings on one page of justified type, and then
pick the one that looks the most readable.
    Dominic Hurley:
Depends on the font (which is another point to consider - not all digital fonts with the same name have the same metrics, and if you are trying to match a book set with metal type you're in for a lot of manual work). Desired is usually set at 100 per cent (which means ID will strive to use the word spacing set in the font). I usually don't like seeing word spacing set below 90 per cent. Maximum is what you can live with. I always leave letterspacing set at 0 (I don't believe in it), but those who do use it will normally use a very tight range.
    Mike Witherell:
No matter what Justification settings you setup in InDesign paragraph styles, InDesign will vary from it. My belief is to give it more parameters to work with, in order to get closer to what I want to see more often. I setup at least 2 if not all 3 settings to have a bit of leeway. For example:
    Word Spacing: 80 / 100/ 120
    Letter Spacing: -5 / 0 / 5
    Glyph Scaling: 97% / 100% / 103%
If the OP wants looser spacing most of the time, he might try increasing the numbers, especially the desired, like this:
    Word Spacing: 100 / 120 / 140
    Letter Spacing: 5 / 10 / 15
I usually don't give an tracking values to the styles at all.
My apologies in advance to those who are horrified at the idea of glyph scaling.
There was another lengthy discussion on the pros and cons of glyph scaling...

  • After updating with Security Update 2010-001, Quicken will not auto update.  Auto update function in Preferences are also inop.  Numerous posts in Macbook discussions about similar problems with other apps.

Installed Security Update 2012-001.  Now Quicken will not auto save and the auto save function in Preferences cannot be changed. There are numerous similar comments in the Macbook discussions about other apps.   Come on, Apple, we need some help out here!

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.
