Why isn't 36 GB enough space to store 50 MB of data?

My iMac has an 80 GB hard drive and Finder says there's 36.54 GB available. I tried to export 100 photos (~500 KB each) from iPhoto to a folder under Documents and the software said I didn't have enough disk space to perform the operation. It tried exporting a few at a time and it let me export for a while before I got the same message. I then deleted some unneeded files, emptied the trash and then I was able to export the rest. The implication appears to be that the usable portion of my hard drive is virtually full even though Finder says there's 36+ GB available. What's going on? Any ideas out there? Do I need to use Disk Utility to Verify Disk?
I accessed the UNIX prompt from Terminal and entered the UNIX command 'df -k' to get info about disk usage. It echoed what Finder reports:
/dev/disk0s3 has 80GB, 42GB used, 38GB available, disk 52% full.
Here's a summary of my disk usage (as reported by Finder):
-- Applications folder 6.08 GB
-- Library folder 3.25 GB
-- System folder 1.02 GB
-- Users folder 28.17 GB
(and a few other top level folders with almost nothing in them)
All work is done in one user account (I created a second user account for emergencies, but it's never used and is close to empty) and it's largest folders are:
-- Documents 1.27 GB
-- Music 24.00 GB
-- Pictures 2.32 GB

It looks as though you have a good handle on what's on your drive. You could try using OmniDiskSweeper to see if there is a hidden folder on your machine that is taken up all the space. My other question is, how do you know your pictures are only taking up 500K per picture? Maybe they are taking up more space than expected. Not really sure but those are my guesses, HTH.

What I learned is that all the people who did not download the updates are good. There phone is working the same. The people who have, they're having battery problems
I have downloaded every update and my battery life is better than any previous iPhone I have ever owned. I see posts from hundreds of people every day, and this is not a commonly reported problem. While there are a few random reports of battery problems, it is no more than I have seen for any other model or any other version of iOS in almost 8 years. Usually problems of rapid battery drain can be traced to bad apps (FaceBook is the worst offender) or corrupt data being synced from iCloud or other sources (gmail, Windows Live, Yahoo, etc).
The simple test is to restore the phone as New. Do not create any email accounts. Do not install any apps. Do not enable FaceTime or iMessage. Do not enable Twitter or any other social networking app. Use it for a day and check the battery usage. You will find that it is working well.

    Check Safari tabs.

See if Disney,  ESPN, and Disney are there.

  • I have purchased additional iCloud space.  It shows I still have space, however my iPad mini shows I don't have enough space for the update for ios7.  My photos are in the cloud, I guess,  so why don't I have enough space?

If I delete photos on my iPad mini, can I still see them in iCloud storage?  How do I free up more space on my iPad  without removing photos?

If you delete photos from your iPad, they will also be deleted from iCloud and you'll lose them.  Also, having additional iCloud space won't give you any more space on your device.   You can't move any data to iCloud and delete it from your device.  All you iCloud data is also on you device, and if you delete it from your device, it is also deleted from iCloud.
One option to free up space for the update is to delete the music from your iPad, then sync it back using iTunes after you update.   (You can delete it all by going to Settings>General>Usage, wait for the apps list to open, then tap Music>Edit, then tap next to All Music.)
Also, if you purchsed the iCloud storage upgrade in the last 15 days thinking you chould use it to free up space on your iPad, you can call the Apple online store for your country and get a refund (1-800-MY-APPLE in the U.S. and Canada.)

  • Why isn't  there arabic books in iBooks store ??

i have just 1 Q : why i do not find any arabic books in iBooks store to download ??? can anyone answer me and tell me how can i make suggestions to Apple ??
    waiting ..

    Hi guys,
I made a search and I found some Arabic books on iBooks. You can search: ويكيليكس or by the publisher's name: OWNI and you'll find the book I'm talking about.
In the beginning I thought the text is posted as pictures -since iBooks doesn't support Arabic- but it's all written as a text that you can select and highlight with all the features that English books have -except the dictionary-.
Does iBooks support Arabic? I don't know, but apparently, you can publish in Arabic
    Thanks,
    Abdullah.

  • HT1689 When I'm using iTunes through my iPad, it constantly tells me "this article is not available in the Australian store" Why isn't it showing me the Australian store in the first place? I'm pretty sure my software is up to date.

    .

I have found tones of documentation that stays that it indeed compatible, so...
So ignore the Apple support people.
They make loads of mistakes regarding compatibility and are likely the last people that you should ask.
Also, when Apple discontinues a product, or, release a new product, they don't always list compatibility of older parts with newer machines. Also, they don't test the parts, so they don't say that the parts are compatible with new machines.
Users know best..... so does Nvidia. Under Drivers and Downloads:
Mac Pro Requirements: >>To find out if you are running the correct Mac Pro, go to About This Mac to find out what system you are running. You can find this by doing the following:
Go to • About This Mac
Click on the • More Info button
    Select • Hardware
The model identifier should be MacPro3,1 or MacPro4,1 (2008 or 2009) or later
Note: MacPro1,1 and MacPro2,1 are not compatible.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_quadro_fx_4800_for_mac_us.html
That would make the MacPro 5,1 compatible with the Quadro 4800 FX......
    Ignore Apple support.

I want to create some database in a DatabaseEnvironment which will be store a large data, such as 10TB. It throws a database exception while put data and the database size reach a size(or 125% size) specified by CacheInfo, even though I close and then reopen the database environment and database. In addition,  it will throw an exception when I give the param "gbytes" a value larger than 1 in CacheInfo,  such as  "new CacheInfo(2, 0, 1)". The OS is windows 8. Why?

    Hi,
I have run your program on both 32 and 64 bit Windows, but there is no error of "Not enough space". The program is able to inserts the records until it fills up the disk. I have tried running it with CacheInfo(0, 64 * 1024 * 1024, 1) and CacheInfo(1, 64 * 1024 * 1024, 1).
For the cachesize problem, I can reproduce the failure when the program requests a single 2GB cache. But this is normal.
32-bit Windows hardly ever has a 2GB contiguous free region in its address map. There are .DLLs and data segments mapped scattered all over the address space, include just below 2GB. Since the most data that a 32-bit application can possibly have is 3 GB (and even that is unusual), there is no single 2GB space for a mapping.
This is not a BDB bug. If you really need 2GB cache, you could try several smaller regions to get closer to 2GB.
Moreover, if you pass the null db file name to HashDatabase.Open(). The database will be created in-memory. That means the database stays inside the environment cache only. So if the database grows bigger than the cache, it will return the "Not enough space" error.
If there is any question, please let me know.

    Cindy Zeng

    Hi there,
Wondering if you might know?  I don't have enough space to update the new software on iPad.  So my facetime isn't working anymore, this is prob why. Seems I have to delete like all the games/apps we have to do so.  Will I lose the progress data/levels in the games? But how do I back up the games data?
Please help.  Scared to delete them to update and then not have the space to restore them and if I get them again will the levels/progress be gone?
    Thanks Rachel

Connect your device to iTunes and do the update through iTunes. Using a computer takes much less space on your device than doing the update on your device.

I have an ipod touch 5th generation 64g . Just bought a new laptop and authorised it to use itunes library. When i try and sync my ipod it says it can't do it because there isn't enough space on my ipod to hold everything in the itunes library. I already know that i can't fit everything on my ipod but when using my old laptop i was able to choose what i wanted to sync. Now i don't seem to have the option of choosing what i can sync, it just refuses to do it as there isn't enough space. Why is this???

  • I'm trying a full restore in Lion, but it won't. States that there isn't enough space on the Mac HD. How do I restore everything from a recent Time Machine Backup?

I'm trying a full restore in Lion, but it won't. States that there isn't enough space on the Mac HD. How do I restore everything from a recent Time Machine Backup?

Thanks but I think it has something to do with the 'restore'. in the newest iTunes 11, when I click on the tab "iphone", it redirects me to the "welcome to your new iphone" page and asks about doing a 'restore'. I already did a 'restore', but it went to the original factory settings and I want to 'restore' to my lastest back up as of April 12. When I choose that option, it says my iphone doesn't have enough space. I don't know how much I need to delete in order to make it work. I've deleted lots, but it only has 4.1 GB available. I'm not sure why this isn't enough to do a 'restore'. I don't want to delete all my photos and videos, but maybe I will have to?...7.7GB is used up for that. I can't sync or do ANYTHING...

  • HT4623 I lost my apps and iTunes after a restore, but it says there isn't enough space on the iPhone 4. How do I know how much space needs to be freed up? I keep deleting photos and videos, but I'm still getting the same message.

I did an iphone 4 software update. It then asked me to do a "restore" in order for me to be able to use the latest iTunes. I did a "restore" to "factory settings" (this was the only option listed) thinking I'd be able to sync later and get everything back and ended up losing all my purchased apps and iTunes. When I open iTunes, "Welcome to your new iphone" and it says I can re-do the "restore" and choose my lastest update. I assume this will give me back my apps and iTunes. When i choose to do this, it says there isn't enough space on the iPhone. How do I know how much space needs to be freed up? I keep deleting photos and videos from the phone, but I'm still getting the same message every time I re-try. I don't want to delete everything, but I don't know what to do...? Thanks!

  • HT4946 Can I back up my iPhone 4S to my ipad 3 (64 gb)? I do not have a computer. I deleted pictures from my iPhone and added then to the ipad, but now I don't have enough space in iCloud to backup either device. Why not?

Can I back up my iPhone 4S to my ipad 3 (64 gb)? I do not have a computer running Mountain Lion. Our desktop still runs Tiger, so I purchased the 3rd generation iPad with 64 gb thinking it had had plenty of room to backup my iPhone photos. I used a camera connection kit and transferred about 1100 old photos from my camera roll on my iPhone to my ipad.  I then deleted pictures from my iPhone and now my camera roll has only 357 photos. However, in the Settings, under "About" it says I have 2147 photos. Why? I only have a total of 216 photos in all my albums. However, now I don't have enough space in iCloud to backup either device. Why not?  Any help, any advice, appreciated please! I spent a long time on the phone with Apple today and they couldn't solve the problem.

iCloud only give so much space for free storage, then if you exceed the limit of 5gb you have to pay for additional storage.
