Why Isn't Airport Extreme n running "Stealthed"?

I was wondering if anyone can point me to a thread to why, if I am listeing to podcasts correctly, the Airport Extreme n does not run in "stealth mode" but that protection is made for the Mac OS. Any info that can be shed on the matter for me would be much appreciated.

Why does my airport extreme not recognize my cable modem anymore?

Have you tried resetting the modem? Power it down and let it rest a moment, then power it back up again.
Also, some ISPs require physically detaching their cable from the modem for it to be fully reset. Literally unscrew it from the modem. Try that, in conjunction with powering it down.
Don't do anything with your Extreme, other than powering it down too, in the event the modem reset does not help. Reconfiguring it may be necessary but this is not justified quite yet.

  • I am running 10.8 and setup airport extreme to run music from my imac to my receiver in the other room. When I open sound from system preferences, I don't see an external device to choose, other then internal speakers. Any ideas?

Airport Express (the small Airport device, which is the only one with an audio connection) works through Airtunes, which only works with iTunes. The computer won't send ALL system sound to the Airport. If you actually want to send sound outside of iTunes, use Airfoil.

  • Why is my Airport Extreme (A1143) so slow?

This weekend my Airport Extreme crashed and I had to create a new wireless network to get it up and running again. Everything looked okay, but the internet isn't so constant as it was before. Could anyone explain what could be wrong? Thanks in advance.

The first thought that comes to mind is that an AirPort router is designed for 3-4 years of home use.......and the Airport Extreme that you have is anywhere from about 6-8 years old depending on when it was purchased......so the AirPort just may be heading downhill.
If you have reset the AirPort back to factory defaults settings and have reconfigured it a few times, and it is still acting up, this pretty much confirms that the power supply inside the AirPort is starting to fail, and the AirPort will need to be replaced in the near future.
It could not hurt to try a few more resets, but I think you will find that they probably will not help much at this point.

  • Why does my Airport Extreme

Why do my aiport extreme and express regularly flash yellow even while functioning properly?

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line) and a message will appear to explain why the Airport is whining
It might be something as simple as a notice that an update is available

  • Why does my Airport Extreme Base Station keep appearing as a Shared device?

After installing 10.5 my Airport Extreme Base Station keeps appearing with a Windows PC icon under the SHARED list in the Finder, and I don't have a hard drive attached. Does anyone know why it's appearing, and how I can make it go away?

Even more weird in my case, I have the Airport Extreme show up twice under Shared. One shows an icon of the actual Airport Extreme which is the one that has the hard drive attached and that works fine. The second is named Airport-Extreme and has an icon like its a PC. lol Not sure what's going on here but if you ask me the first one should be there because that makes sense, but I have no idea why the second one is displayed. Must be some sort of bug.

  • Why won't Airport Extreme 802.11n software install?

I recently bought an Airport Extreme 802.11n from a friend who replaced it with a Time Machine, and as the first step in installing it, I loaded the software disk into my MacBookPro. When I tried the install, I got a warning that the software could not be installed on my machine because the "version of OS X is not supported". I am running Snow Leopard, so I checked the Apple support site to see if there is a download that would fix the problem. I did update my OS, but that did not help. Right now the Airport Extreme is a doorstop! Any ideas?

Why won't Airport Extreme 802.11n software install?
Because a newer version of it is part of Mac OS X 10.6. If the base station doesn't work properly or at all with the included software, post back.

  • Why does my airport extreme network crash once each evening around 6 P.M.?

Like clockwork, every darned day, my network crashes with no known cause. I'm with Comcast as my ISP but they seem to have no clue - or won't admit it if they do 1 about my crashes. Every service tech they send out has a different possible remedy, like the likelihood of a switch being activated nearby that causes my network to crash so routinely.
Anyone have any experience like this before?

One of the problems with Air Radar and other utilities like this is that it will not display the signals of cordless phones, security systems and even other "closed" networks around you.
As you know, a "closed" network will not display the name of the wireless signal when you scan looking for networks.
This is a popular feature with many users and you can probably safely bet that there are at least 3-4 other networks around you that Air Radar cannot "see".
Other wireless routers are continuously looking for a good channel to use, so while you may have a "good" channel for a time, in a crowded area, some other router will likely jump on the same channels.
Cordless phones change channels continuously so even if you could "see" their signals...(and you can't with Air Radar)....they are tough to avoid.
Did you try different locations with your AirPort Extreme?
Can something from within my iMac be causing this calamity of networking failure?
    Nothing that I know of.
Most wireless networks operate on the 2.4 GHz band. A newer Apple router and also routers from other brands will operate on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band. There are very few networks using 5 GHz so that might be something to think about. The problem here is that your G4 will likely not work on this frequency.
The other thing to think about is having a professional IT person come out to your house to run some scans using pro equipment. I can't say that this will help, but if Air Radar shows 4-5 other signals, you can bet that the pro equipment will probably display over 20 possible sources of interference in your area.

  • Why is my airport extreme showing up as a PC server in Finder's Shared area

I have just set up the shared function on my Macbook and IMac after installing Leopard. Under the new shared section in the sidebar of the Finder, my IMac shows up on my macbook and my macbook shows up on my IMac which is the way it should work. My question, however, is that in addition my 2 computers I think my airport extreme is also showing up under the shared section as a PC server (basically it shows up as a series of numbers and letters which I think is partly the ethernet number from the back of my extreme and when I click on this number and select Get Info - it says it is a PC server). Should I be worried? Does this mean my network is not secured or is this normal?

Oddly enough, after 5 weeks of the wifi being intermittent our iMac/Macbook are working 95% of the time, despite no fix. I've had to recreate everything through the set up a few times. Otherwise I simply gave up on the usual "follow these 50 steps and everything will be OK' kind of solutions.
The solution is to keep banging on at Apple to get this fixed. Send them complaints directly instead of just these threads.
Ironically (and there really is no greater irony) whilst Leopard has been having a caseload of wireless issues, Apple doesn't fix it but instead..... introduces ... a wireless laptop. Duh. Sometimes you want to kiss them - other times you want to throw pies. This time it's the latter - and basically all it is is that there are not enough people working on this.

  • Win Laptop gets "free" wireless internet, why not my Airport Extreme

I'm an Apple novice so don't scream too loud!
My Toshiba automatically picks up several wireless networks in my house.
I cancelled my DSL because these signals were sufficient.
I was hoping to do the same with my Power Mac G5. I installed an airport extreme card but it doesn't recognize the wireless signal.
Will the airport card only recognize a signal from an airport base station?
Is there something I can change in the settings etc?
What is a base station's range? Would it carry from a neighbor's house?
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 (6/04)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    First, welcome to the discussions.
If you installed the Airport Extreme Card correctly, and connected the Antenna it will be just exactly like your Toshiba. ANY Computer that is equiped with a wireless card will see ANY Network that it is in range of.
The range of the Airport Extreme Base Station is 150ft
Yes it would carry from a neighbors house.
Just in passing so you know. When you pick up a signal from a neighbor, and you use it, it is not legal without written permission from the person paying for the service. This is commonly known as Pirating, if caught it can be a fine as well as jail time.
Wasn't that easy and nobody yelled.

  • Why does my airport extreme have 2 of the LAN port on but not the main light after a lightning strike ??!

    pleasee help!!

Unfortunately, this is a symptom that a power surge has damaged the AirPort Extreme. There is likely nothing that can be done other than replacing the device.
If you have an Apple store or authorized servicer in your area, you should take it to them so they can have a look at the device to confirm. As user stinkybumbler mentions, it would be a good idea to have any of your sensitive electronic gear plugged into a high quality surge protection device.

  • Why is my airport extreme signal strength so weak on my macbook pro?

I live in a 4 story brownstone, next to neighbors with lots of wireless routers. My macbook pro (OS X 10.6.8) frequently is dropped from my airport extreme router. The strange thing is, the macbook receives a much stronger connection to my next door neighbor's wireless router (which is behind 2 brick walls, and down 1 floor) than it does to my airport extreme router - located 15 feet to my right with no interfering walls. In fact, I can stay solidly connected to my neighbor's router even when I'm 2 floors above him.
There are 4 other devices in my house connected to my airport extreme router. All have no problems connecting.
An ipad, which moves around from floor to floor, even outside on my front stoop.
A stationary imac located 4 inches away from the router
A stationary brother laser printer, about 10 feet to the right of the router (no interfering walls)
A stationary lexmark inket printer, about 10 feet in front of the router (behind 1 partition wall)
What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Problem solved. My router had some significant interference from a neighbours router that is no longer an issue.

  • Why does my AirPort Extreme keep shutting off?

My AirPort Extreme keeps shutting off randomly can any one help?
    -thanks

More experience leads me to believe the problem is with the new iMac.  If I get the network going by turning AirPort Extreme power off, then on, I see a good signal at my iMac. Experience shows the network drops off after several hours. But yesterday I turned the iMac off, and the network remainded up (I could see it on my iPhone and iPad) throughout the night.  That's the first time that has happened since I got the new iMac.  Never had this issue with the old machine. I transferred all file to the new machine from a Time Machine backup that was up-to-date.  Am working with Apple support. They had me do a re-boot of the AirPort and will call back tomorrow AM to learn it did not solve the problem, but turning off the iMac does.  Darn.

  • Why does my Airport Extreme Base Station not recognize my iProDrive powered external hard drive?

My 500GB iprodrive is recognized when connected directly to any of my computers just fine. My AEBS recognizes flash drives just fine. But the two together don't work. I have tried reformatting to exfat, msdos(fat), extended, extended journaled, none work. Its a powered drive so I'm assuming thats not the problem. Help?

Its a powered drive so I'm assuming thats not the problem.
I have to use a powered USB hub with a 1 TB LaCie hard drive when I connect it to the AirPort Extreme, otherwise the drive is not recognized.
However, I can connect the same hard drive directly to my MacBook Pro and it works just fine without the powered USB hub.
Try formatting the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+, and try using a powered USB hub when you connect the drive to the AEBS.
If that still won't work, then you have to assume that the drive is just not compatible with the USB port on the AEBS.

  • Why does my AirPort Extreme Base Station lose the internet when I unplug my printer Ethernet cable?

I just changed ISPs to Qwest from Speakeasy. New modem. Now my etherneted (from extreme base station) printer (Brother HL1870N) doesn't work.
And if I unplug the printer ethernet cable from the base station, the base station loses the internet connection.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks
