  • Apple: Why isn't 16:9 a supported format?

This has been bugging me for a couple of years now. And no - I'm not as stupid as the title suggests.
But seriously. When I capture a 16:9 anamorphic file using the correct settings, or having edited and exported a 16:9 sequence... Why is everything squished and squashed when playing it in QTplayer or importing it as a clip in FCP? Or for that matter - why does DVDSP or Compressor not recognize the FCP-exported 16:9 sequence as that?
If this metadata is such a big problem to pass on, I would at least reccomend 16:9 to be the default ratio while they embed a real flag for this! I mean. What format is most used by video-professionals these days? Is it 4:3? Or is it perhaps 16:9?
I know about both square and rectangular pixels, and I know a whole lot of workarounds to get the result as I want it. But they all require manual punch-in, they are all multiple step-processes that take time, and they all have pitfalls. And seriously - even if I get it - people around me don't... I'm kinda getting tired of telling everybody "You have to do this and this stupid thing..."
Aren't these things just supposed to "work"?
    So... Why isn't 16:9 a supported format?

I have to deal with this in my real job and to be honest, it gives me a huge headache; integrating SD, analog and HD material into one show whatever the flavor of the day is - is that video cropped, squished or stretched or letterboxed or pillarboxed....wait, I need that to be stretched from that show and that to be cropped from that show and and and and....
I can't provide a solution as I don't understand it all myself, however, to answer your query of what aspect ratio is predominantly used it is still 4:3 NTSC here in the U.S. Until all programming is HD and everyone has purchased an ATSC tv, I think we'll be stuck with this issue.

  • Why isn't clock available in notification center? How did they forget that

If reminders and calendar are available in notification center why isn't clock?

Do you mean alarms? Because the time is displayed at the top of the screen while in the notification center. If you mean alarms, it's probably because they expect people to stop using the alarm feature for anything other than waking them up in the morning, which probably doesn't need to be displayed in the notification center since it must be dismissed or snoozed immediately. Now that Reminders is a feature, it's much easier to use that as you had used the alarm clock before. You can be 'reminded' at a certain date & time without having to use clocks.
Is that what you were talking about or am I off the mark?

  • Mad men series 2 - why isn't it available on iTunes in the uk

Why isn't mad men series 2 available on iTunes in the uk

Of course it was shown on a UK Channel! Back in 2009! And the really annoying thing is that series 1, 3 and 4 are available so it makes no sense whatsoever!!

  • Why is the chat option under support gone?

    Hey guys,
I can't find the chat option under service anymore. When I go through the process describing my problem I get choices of either
    Send in for service,
    Or take in for service,
    Or contact carrier,
Or contact Apple Support (call when you are ready)
Do anyone know how I can use the chat option again? I think that's a very convinient way for me to communicate since my english isn't that great.
    Thank you!

I think it only applies to certain countries.   Have you moved to a different country since you last used it.   Or do you know for sure it has been available where you live?

  • Why isn't Lightroom available as a Desktop app in the Creative Cloud?

I guess I assumed Lightroom would be a part of the Adobe Creative Cloud and available for Desktop download? Is there any reason in particular why is it not? It's very disappointing....

Great News! Lightroom 4 is now available as part of the Creative Cloud membership! Learn more from Jeff Veen on the product team blog: http://adobe.ly/Lr4CCM

  • Why isn't there an Apple support email address?

I have a support case, opened yesterday, about Apple ID security (a suspected identity theft attempt).  I now want to provide additional information (a copy of an email I have just received).  But although I have a support case number, the support website doesn't have any way for me to provide that information.  The only thing it offers is a way to arrange a phone call with support.  I don't want another phone call: the one I had yesterday is plenty.  I want to forward the email to Apple and have it connected to my support case.  All of the emails I have received from Apple regarding this issue have been from some sort of do-not-reply address.  This *****, frankly.  I should be able to hit 'reply' on something, have the subject line pick up the case number, and just paste in the information I have.

Just FYI, the forum software wasn't developed by Apple. It's a commercial package from Jive Software, and this rather old version of the software, to the best of my knowledge, did not have a "mobile" version. Apple is working on a new "Communities" which will use different forum software, and at that time it's possible that there might be a mobile version. We'll have to wait and see, though, until such time as Apple is ready to say more.

  • Why isn't Kuler available for Android anymore??

All the Adobe apps were available for Android tablets (and I paid for them @ $10 each) and now I can't get them installed on my new tablet.

    Hi Trinitywebdesign,
Do you still have access to the older Android device? You might be able to use an Android backup app (for example MyBackup Pro) to backup the apps on the older device online or to a SD card, and then install backup app on the new device and restore them there. You would want to ensure the apps were compatible with the new device before doing so. We can’t guarantee it will work, but I’ve heard of it working for others.
If you have the order numbers from the purchases I can pursue trying to get you a refund.

  • Why isn't it available worldwide already?

Why is it only possible to buy it in the US?
When can we expect to buy it in Europe?

Well, I was just a little ahead in time. I forgot about the old clock issue... It was first launched in the US because it was wednesday morning there, and it came out this morning in Europe too...
Sorry about that... I was just so excited that I blancked!
It's here alright. I've just ordered mine a few minutes ago. Probably will get it next week.

  • Why isn't audiobook available for download on my computer?

I just got an audiobook on my iPad, but on my iPod touch and my computer, the "Buy" button is still there instead of the "download" button. I've checked my "Purchased" page and it's not there, but on my computer, I looked at my purchase history from the "Account" option, and it was there....So why can't I find the download option anywhere?

Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store - I believe that they are all supplied to Apple by audible.com, so it's possibly them that are requiring the one-time download. You should be able to connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over to your computer (they should copy over to the Books part of your library) and you then sync them to your iPod (and take a backup copy).

  • HT5007 why isn't this available in canada?

It's not like the movies are especially different...

Very likely it's a movie studio restriction. You can bet if Apple can do anything to get you to part with your money they would.

  • Why isn't IOS7 available for the iPod 4th generation?

Even though fourth generation is old is should have to stay with the same ios forever

There is a time when the software just outgrows the hardware. That is what has happened with the iPod 4th gen.
It is just obsolete. So you are just going to have to live with that fact.

  • Why isn't JMS available in J2SE?

i think i may have a possible application for JMS in one of my projects, but i only use J2SE.
    what gives?

    Hi.
Lets get things straight here - ok, so JMS is defined in the context of J2EE and all that. This doesn't mean you can't use it in J2SE - after all, it is only a set of interfaces and their implementations.
The only thing is - you'd have to work out a way to obtain the connection to the messaging provider in order to get the connection factories and destinations, but that shouldn't be too hard anyway. Choose a provider, and you'll be able to do it.
I wouldn't recommend sockets for robust messaging, unless its only two applications, and you really want to handle everything by yourself.
There are some messaging products you can use, they differ in many things, like size (in MB), speed, reliability, functionality, and of course - price.
    I'd take a look at a few providers -

  • Why isn't there an Apple Support/Discussions Forum app?

I think this would be very useful.

  • Why isn't the first generation iPad not supported by iOS 6?

I am totally confused. Why isn't the first iPad supported in iOS 6?
iPad 1: Apple A4 1GHz processor and 256 mb RAM
iPod Touch 3G: 800 MHz processor (same as iPhone 3GS) and 256 mb RAM
iPhone 3GS: 800 MHz processor (underclocked to 600 i believe)

3GS is still sold officially and new. iPad first generation isn't. Android is even worse about things like this.
PLEASE don't branch this into twenty different threads, and keep it in the two that already exist.
