Why isn't my mac running a real OS? An example being Windows 7

My mac doesnt seem to be running any sort of actual Operating System...

uh yeah i know about that, but what im wondering is why i dont have an actual OS (such as Windows 7), but rather i seem to have some sort of lesser Operating System, and i dont like it
That is because you failed to purchase windows to go on your Mac, you can do so very easily from many sources.

    flytnn,
after a fresh install, Spotlight will need to reïndex the files on your internal disk — that happens each time a fresh installation takes place.
I see that you have OS X 10.9.2 installed. Are you planning on installing the 10.9.3 update?
Your installed version of Java is outdated — the most recent version can be downloaded from here.

  • Why is my new Mac running so slow?

I have just purchased a new Mac desktop...and am loving it so far. However, after some photos were added to it off and external hard drive, it seems to be SO slow.
Aslo, I cannot open any PDF files anymore...I've installed Adobe Reader, but what comes up from the download is garbled.
If you can help, I'd be so grateful...I'm really new to Mac.
    Thank you,
    Ally

    Hello & welcome Ally!
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Any change?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

  • Why isn't my mac mail not working?

    Hey Apple Forum,
A problem has occured with my mac mail. I can recieve mail but how come I cannot send mail to anyone? It says there's something wrong with the server. But I haven't been able to send mail using this app since the day I got my macbook. So if you can please help me out. Thanks

You don't need .Mac for mail to work. You do if you're using a .Mac account. You can use your own IPS's mail and that's what I assumed you were using. However if .Mac is the service you're using you need to open Mail and select Preferences from the Menu at the top of the screen.
Once there you need to enter a description (what you want to call the account) name, email address, etc. under the Accounts. Then you need these settings
    Mail Server: mail.mac.com
Username: (whatever you've agreed on as an email address)
Password: (again whatever you've selected for this account)
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.mac.com:(your username)
I have a .Mac account but I've never had a free trial version. But if it's receiving mail then it's the SMTP part that needs the correct information entered. That's the server than sends outgoing mail.....out.

  • HT2584 why isn't my mac pro work properly as it is new. the connection for the bluetooth is totally out and its not functioning at all. kindly please assist me on this

THE BLUETOOTH CONNECTION IS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND IT BEING DIFFICULT TO DOWNLOAD THE UPDATES

The standard first attempt at "fixing" BT problems is to do a smc and pram reset (try these first).  But for mac pro's, if you are using a magic mouse say, about 3 or more feet, from the mac pro, you are most likely in for some continued aggravation.  That's because the BT antenna is hidden in the back of the mac pro (faraday cage) and the magic mouse BT, for lack of better words, $ucks.
Here's a thread on this subject:
Poor Bluetooth reception and jerky mouse
Basically it comes down to wiring your own external antenna in place of the internal one already there or using a BT USB dongle.  I use a dongle myself on my 2010 mac pro.

  • Why isn't my iPod Shuffle (Generation 2) showing up or being recognized on my [Hewlett Packard] PC running Windows 8?

When I connect the iPod Shuffle to the computer via USB port, the light blinks orange 3 times, then green for half a second, and is recognized as a drive at first.  But then the green light turns off and is no longer recognized as a device (device disappears).  ***? I'm just frustrated because I've done almost everything I could think of, including watching several hours of YouTube "how-tos".  Grrrr.  Help, someone

It's supposed to initially sync with iTunes (iPod's storage is mounted at first).  Then iTunes dismounts the iPod's storage, until it needs to sync again (such as when you load music).  To keep the iPod's storage mounted continously, you can set it to Enable disk use, on the iPod's Settings tab in iTunes.
But you are saying it does not appear in iTunes at all when it is connected?  The latest version of iTunes may have the sidebar (on left side) hidden, which is where the shuffle appears (under DEVICES).  If the sidebar is hidden, you can show it by going to the menu bar, under View, and selecting Show Sidebar.
After doing that, the shuffle does not appear under DEVICES in the sidebar?
If it does not appear in iTunes, make sure you have shut down and restarted your PC, if you have not since this problem occurred.  Also, do this to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1655
Have you tried disconnecting all USB devices, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if used), and connecting the shuffle to a direct USB port?

  • Why isn't my mac smart enough not to turn itself off while downloading from the app store?

    it's plugged in and everything.

Is it turning itself off or going to sleep? If it is turning itself off, you may have a shutdown time in System Preferences/Energy Saver that is over riding and shutting it down.
In my personal experience, there are some activities that don't seem to register enough to keep the computer from sleeping/shutting down, so I set sleep to never until I'm done.

  • Mac OS 10.5.5  and joining a Windows XP workgroup

    Hi everyone,
I have been trying to connect my Mac running OS 10.5.5 to my windows XP machine workgroup and have had absolutely no luck. I have tried various online searches for help, and still no luck.
    can anyone help me?
    Thanks

    What have you done already?
There's a bug in Leopard that won't let you change the workgroup name for the default automatic network connection, so is that what you are referring to?

  • Why isn't there a chart with ios, mac os and itunes compatibily?

Since there are so many people who have been screwed over by upgrading to a newer ios without knowing that they would need a different version of iTunes that can only work with a newer Mac os, but their computer cannot run that os, so now they are out of luck, WHY isn't there a chart somewhere that shows the compatibility between ios, itunes, Mac os and even Mac computer versions? The info is available if you search for it separately (lots of searches), but I can't find it all in one place. For example, ios7 works only with itunes 11.1 and up on 10.6.8 and up on an intel Mac. That is really useful for people who want to make sure their whole infrastructure is compatible before they upgrade. Does anyone know if something like this exists anywhere? Thanks.

  • Why does Time Capsule hate older Macs running Tiger??

Time Capsule has ruined my network and my bloody Saturday!
I have never had this much trouble with an Apple product (at least since OS 8)...and I just waited on hold for over 64 minutes and then got disconnected. Sorry if this is jumbled, but it's been one lousy day!!
I got my Time Capsule, and I was looking forward to setting it up for backup once I got past the "easy" part of the router setup...uh huh...easy...for my new iMac (running 10.5.2) , no prob. For my 2002 Power Mac running 10.4.11 and an original AirPort card, another story. Just as well that my old PowerBook G4 is still at work.
After some struggles, I gave up setting up the more secure WPA password for the G4 and reverted to a far less secure WEP password. At least that way I could get the G4 connected wirelessly.
If I want to access drives connected to my G4 from the iMac, no problems; I can also see the Time Capsule drive from the G4; however I cannot for the life of me get the G4 to successfully mount the iMac (which was no problem before I switched routers).
I was using a dLink router (which I gave away because I thought I wouldn't need it anymore), and getting online wirelessly while connecting my iMac to the old Power Mac G4 via Gigabit Ethernet for file sharing on occasion. When I first set up the Time Capsule, I tried to keep the ethernet cable connected directly between the two machines (as I had successfully with the dlink). While the iMac could mount the G4 readily, the G4, despite seeing the iMac, couldn't. Even in iChat using Bonjour, the G4 could receive messages and send messages back to the iMac (in an established chatroom), but it would always fail if I tried to send a "private" message...
sigh I just tried again...I always just had 169.1.1.2 and 169.1.1.3 as manual IP's for my ethernet connection, while mainintaining wireless connections to router (and internet); never a problem...now, even with that &*?&! time Capsule completely out of the loop, the G4 refuses to connect to the iMac...simply won't do it (even when it sees it!)...now because of the snowstorm in Canada, can't even reach Apple...nice real nice...wish I never heard of Time Capsule...
Does anybody have any way to work around this crap??? This is ridiculous!

Well I hade so much trouble to change my AP Express and when it arrives, my TC... to put my macs in a subnet. And that's true, I had to create a new network profile. It seems there was a problem with the normal one, but I can't say from where.
The problem I still have is that it cannot memorize one time for all the device order. It's always changing and gives me troubles.

  • Why wont Turbo Tax 2012 run on my mac?

Why wont Turbo Tax 2012 run on my Intel Mac running OS10.6.8?
    My Mac:
       Intel Core Duo
       OS 10.6.8
       2GHz processor
Box and online specs indicate it should work but it does not...
    Can Anyone help...

    Hi eston,
well, the bad news for you is that the specs do indicate that it will not run on your computer.
    Why, you ask.
If you look at the TurboTax 2012 specs for Mac, it states that for Mac OS X 10.6.8, one needs to run 64-bit.
from Intuit site, TurboTax Deluxe 2012 computer requirements  (http://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/deluxe.jsp):
    Processor:Intel-based Processor
    Operating System:
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or later
Mac OS X v10.7.5 or later
Mac OS X v10.8.0 or later
Note: 64-bit required for Mac OS 10.6.8
the "64-bit required" link takes one to the Apple kb page....
    My Mac:
       Intel Core Duo
       OS 10.6.8
       2GHz processor
your spec list above states that you have an Intel Core Duo.  The Apple kb article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3696)  shows a list of which processors are 64-bit and which are 32-bit.  Unfortunately for you, the Intel Core Duo is 32-bit.  This is why TurboTax 2012 will not run on this computer.
The next processor, Intel Core 2 Duo, is 64-bit, as are the later Xeon and "i" series.
    cheers, and good luck,
    Roy

  • Anyone provide accurate info on why after 1 yr, after guarantee period expiry the DVD player on our I mac running Intel core duo processor with OS 10.6.8 refuses to run DVDs? CDs run

Can anyone provide accurate info on why after 1 yr, ( just after guarantee period expiry) the DVD player on our I mac running Intel core duo processor with OS 10.6.8 refuses to run DVDs?
CDs run without problem and until recently the DVD we have (all original no pirated copies) ran; we have used a CD cleaner disc to no avail.

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
I suggest an erase and install and use your backup for any important files you have.
Did you perform a disk check/repair and permissions repair and a PRAM zap before updating? While not required, they are usually necessary to avoid issues.
There are so many reasons for a bad install, that it is impossible to list them all.
Out-of-date software, drivers, etc, haxies, and other software can cause problems.
My three updates were without incident, so it is possible for a perfect update, but unless you supply us with details about your previous system, programs, apps, drivers, etc., it is not possible to figure out what happened.
Again, whenever installing an update to an OS, a clone or other full backup is absolutely necessary, as reading the posts on this board indicate.
