Why isn't my memory stick showing up on MacBook, including Disk Utility?

Hi,
My USB doesn't seem to be shoing in Finder and Disk Utility. Why could this be?

I'm having the same problem with 2 USB sticks, both of which work on my old Tiger MacBook Pro, but not on my new Lion MacBook Pro.
One stick is older
One stick is new and I formatted it a few days ago in Disk Utility, but now neither is visible in the Finder or Disk Utility.
I have tried both of the USB 3 ports and the USB port on my wired Mac Keyboard.
Other devices work on both USB ports.
The Finder Preferences are set to see everything on the desktop.
I can see both of them in the System Information, however.
This is a brand new Mac, so I might have missed a setting.

Why isn't my phone not showing up in itunes?

Funny, I had the same problem today for the first time.  I had to connect it with the sync cable for it to show.  Normally, it's always there waiting for a wireless sync.  Strange!

I'm having the same problem as well - on both the iPhone4 and iPad.  I can see my subscriptions if I sign in via Safari on either of the devices, but if I try to use the built in YouTube app, it says I have no subscriptions.  This started sometime on the 11th for me. I remember watching videos that morning through the app, but they were gone when I tried that afternoon.

  • Why isn't my partition not showing up to install window?

I am trying to add a Windows partition to my MacBook Pro. I have completed the steps through boot camps several times. When I get to the blue screen to select where to add Windows, only the C drive is showed and I know this is my Mac hard drive. I really need help. I have search over the internet, I have even gone to the Apple store and no help. When I go into Disk Utility I see the two partitions I created. The Mac and the Windows (32GB). I am wondering is there a way I can put the Windows on a D:// drive. I need some good assistance. Thanks

What WIndows are you trying to install ?
If it is Windows XP, you have to use a XP with SP2 or SP3 incorporated.
    Earlier versions don't work.
The sysmptoms you describe make me believe you use a WIndows XP with SP1 or earlier.

  • FYI - Just purchased 16GB USB2 memory stick to boot my MacBook Air

    FYI...
Have used SuperDuper! 2.5 to clone my internal boot SSD to a 16GB USB2 memory stick. It was successful and a subsequent boot from this USB2 memory stick went smoothly without issues - although it was just a tad slow in booting compared to the SSD.
This will be my safety boot drive while away from office/home in the event my internal SSD misbehaves or gets corrupted.

The 16GB memory stick is an A-Data brand. P/N 75IC160020 and the packaging states "Data Retention: Up to 10 years".
The issues about the memory stick fitting into the narrow spaced USB port on the MBA is problematic. It kinda of fits but does not seat down completely. I have to shave off a small amount of material around the memory stick's protruding USB connector so that it can seat down properly. I have not done this yet and use a USB2 hub for booting from the memory stick.
I can write to the memory stick at a steady 5.3 MBytes/sec with the occasional spike up to 6.4 MBytes/sec.

  • Finder shows more space available than Disk utility

I am clearing out space on my main hard drive. The Finder shows that I have 265 Gbytes available (out of 750), but disk first aid shows that I have only 90 Gbytes.
    Disk Utility shows no problem.

    Morning Bodance,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
There could be several reasons why this could occur.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:

  • Why is there large used space after erasing external drive with disk utility?

I just used disk utility to erase a 2 TB external hard drive. After erasing it, it shows that the disk has 12 folders, 62 files, and 852 mb of used space. I thought the "erase" function is supposed to format the disk? Where does the large used space come from?
By the way, the disk used to formatted as a windows disk. I suspect it has something to do with it but have no idea what. Any help is greatly appreciated!

HI - i do not think this is purely metadata. (though it could be with your windows disk with such small used memory) i have a 1TB macbook pro drive that i have tried to reformat
METHOD 1 (recommended by advanced Apple Techy) - select hard drive (not partition) select mac os (journalled) and press 'apply' - "this will format drive removing all data. it is always best to work with the drive and not partition, if you are formatting an entire drive."
result at end - drive still shows single partition 999GB WITH 668GB USED
METHOD 2 (after response from Apple techy) - select hard drive and mac os (journalled), press secure erase and select 'write zeros' takes 12 hours
result at end - drive still shows single partition 999GB WITH 668GB USED

  • 10.4.10 will show external hard drive in Disk Utility (in turn, mount)

Here's the problem in a nutshell. When I'm running 10.4.10 my Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (installed in an external enclosure) will not show up in Disk Utility (in turn also unable to mount). My DVD-RW burner will work, the enclosure is fine. When I boot off of the Mac OS X Install CD and run Disk Utility the drive and its partitions display. I did an archive and install and they were back in Mac OS X (10.4.7). - Rather than using Software Update, I decided to download the 10.4.10 Combo update manually and install (with the drive ejected and unplugged of course). Same issue once booting in Mac OS X 10.4.10...
Before I do an archive and install again, and revert to 10.4.9 indefinitely, is there anything I can try. I did googling, deleted some preference/cache files with no success.

This bug popped up after 10.4.9 was released and many folks (myself included) have experienced the same problem - after the install external hard drives, both FireWire and USB, are no longer accessible or visible.
In fact, I'm searching the discussion boards now to see if the 10.4.10 update fixed this. Apparently it has not.
Here are some other threads about this and 10.4.9 that might be of use to you:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=897541
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=892387
I finally reverted to 10.4.8, which perfectly recognizes my external drives, and will not update until I know this bug has been fixed. As far as I know, reverting is unfortunately the only way to fix this issue.:(

  • Windows partition not showing up in finder OR disk utility

doesn't snow leopard have ntfs support out of the box? Well I have windows 7 x64 installed via bootcamp, yet the windows partition will not show up in finder. I checked in disk utility and there is my macintosh HD, and a greyed out partition named disk0s4. It's 120gb, same size as the windows partion, but it says that it is FAT, which I know is not right. I even went so far as to to reformat the whole drive and reinstall both windows 7 and os x, and I am 100% sure it is a NTFS drive, even though it still will not mount in osx and it still says it's FAT in disk utility. What is going on??

Go to Finder > Preferences > General
Make sure External disks is selected.
Restart your Mac then connect the external drive.

  • DVD Stuck in slot drive, doesn't show on desktop or in Disk Utility

I downloaded the 10.5.3 combo update on my Power Mac and burned a disk image of the file to a DVD to update my iMac which suffers from the Airport problem and is unable to successfully download anything before connection drops.
I successfully updated the iMac to 10.5.3 but upon restart, the DVD is still in the slot, and doesn't show on the desktop nor in DU.
I tried the eject button, but nothing. I tried restarting and holding down the mouse button, but no luck.
How do I get the disk out?

    Thanks for replying, xnav.
Unfortunately I have tried these with no luck. The disk does not show up in disk utility, it's like it doesn't even exist, yet it remains there in the drive making it impossible to insert any disk.
I don't know what to do at this point... take it to the shop I guess!

  • HD Get Info Showing Different Size After Using Disk Utility

I recently removed my second partition I used as a back up to free up some more space. I booted into the Leopard install CD and ran disk utility to delete the 2nd partition and resized my "home" partition to ~148GB and had no issues. I booted into Leopard and used "Get Info" on my "home" drive and noted it showing my HD size was only ~74GB. I used find to search for files on "This Mac" where size was greater than 500 MB and found nothing unusual. Does anyone have an idea what this issue could be?
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

    Hi Tom,
Of course, that makes perfect sense! When I made my last disk image backup, my PowerBook had a serious, undiagnosed problem and I had booted from the startup disk to have a current backup of everything before I sent it off for repair.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Why isn't two 4gig sticks an option?

I'm going through the mac pro customizer, and saw that you can get 8 gigs buy getting 4 2gig sticks.
But no option for 2 4gig sticks. Wouldn't that make the most economic sense if you are planning on upgrading down the line? Or is there a reasoning behind why it isn't offered, other than the cynical business one.

    Hi,
Apple just don't offer them, that's all.
You can get 4GB modules from here http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory
Personally I would always go with 4 x XGB modules for best performance, since the MAc Pro has a Memory Controller Hub with two independent links to the Risers A and B.
