Why isn't sharing between SL and Windows7 stupid simple?

I'm a fairly smart guy, but I have to admit, I'm stumped here. I have a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard and a Toshiba Laptop running Windows 7. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to share files between the two. I'm currently using Dropbox, but that ain't gonna cut it for much longer.
I've got SMB sharing turned on in System Preferences, and I think I've got Windows7 set up correctly, but really, who the **** knows?
Why is this so hard? I've even got Bonjour for Windows installed, but after running the installer there's no sign of the app anywhere on the laptop. Searching for it turns up zero results.
Anybody have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I really don't even need two-way sharing; I simply want a way to transfer files FROM the PC TO the Mac in the other building. The Mac is sharing the drive in question; I just want to be able to write to it.

The Shadow, er, I mean the Ghost knows. On Win7, have you turned on file sharing the the Network and Sharing control panel? I wouldn't try password protected sharing now. Have you shared something on the Win7? If not, then pick, say, your Documents folder, right click on it, and choose sharing. I don't recall exactly what you will see, but the idea is to share the folder with everyone (this can be changed later).

You shouldn't need Bonjour. It's a waste of time. OS X/Windows sharing is very easy. Just make sure that trying to use Bonjour is not getting in your way.

On the other side, having smb sharing selected is a start. Be sure file sharing is selected on your Mac. You may end up wanting to share both ways. And, you might make sure your Win7 and Mac are in the same workgroup. Use the workgroup of the Win7--presumably "workgroup." For this step, Go > System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Wins.
Also, on your Mac, under Sno, you probably will have to use Go > Connect to Server--smb://IpAddress (or computer name) to connect. The Win7 is not very likely to show up under "Shared" as it should because you are using Sno. Your Mac should show up very readily in Network on the Win7. The hard part of sharing between Win7/Sno and Vista/Sno is the Sno part.

  • Why has file sharing between iPad and iTunes stopped working?

After installing the new version of iTunes and Lion my iPad shared files no longer appear in the Shared Files window in the Apps tab.  For instance I use Artrage and have imported many of my drawings using iTunes....but now this no longer works.  I contacted Artrage and they say that this does not seem to be a problem with specific Apps because they are seeing similar complaints from other people with the same problem but with different Apps.  I no longer have access to my Pages document either.  Does any one have any tips on how to fix this?  Anyone else having the same problem?  Thanks.
So to clarify....I connect my iPad.  Click my connected iPad tab on the left.  Then click the Apps tab along the top.  Then I scroll down and see the File Sharing section.  I see 4 Apps that allow file sharing.  I click Artrage to see files appear on the right hand side.  No files are listed. (I have at least 30-50 drawings)  I click Pages to access files.  2 files do appear....but not all files.  On my iPad I have 3 folders each with more than 4 documents....plus 4 other documents that are not in folders.
    Hope this makes sence.

I saw a similar post that had a solution posted.  The idea was a corrupted iPad back up.  So I deleted my iPad back up and created a new one.  This did not work.
I was hoping it would be so easy.

  • Any issues with file sharing between Windows and latest Mac client?

We're running Lync 2013. My Windows client is 15.0.4551.1005. Mac client is version 14.0.8.
I open a conversation with a coworker on his Mac. I then try to share a png file. He clicks accept but then my client says the attempt timed out, and his client says that I canceled the file transfer. The coworker then boots the Mac into Windows and we try
again, and the file share works fine. When I jump on my Mac, I can send files to his Mac without issue. When he tries to send from his Mac to my PC it fails, but when he tries to send from Windows on his Mac to my PC, it works.
I can't find anything specific in the logs that would indicate a firewall issue. Is there a bug with file sharing between the Mac and PC clients?
    Thanks,
    Matt

No, There isn't a bug with file sharing between Mac and Pc client.
2941640 Desktop sharing session stops in Lync 2013 when all screen data is updated

  • Internet sharing between cellphone and computer us...

I have watched some videos in youtube about internet sharing between cellphones and computer using "BLUETOOTH"... How do they do that? How can we do this? Anybody here can share to us how to do this??

I personally would not of thaught this is possible as bluetooth is essentially just a radio signal, obviously it can transmit data but i dont think it has the ability to stream a broadband connection. Could be completely wrong but thats what i think.
    You are wrong
Most Nokia phones with a bluetooth interface can let you connect your computer to the Internet using your phone as a modem connected by bluetooth. So, BT definitely can support the data stream.
Enabling a computer to use the phone's Internet connection over BT or via USB cable is possible with no additional software on the phone. Doing the opposite, allowing the phone to use the computer's Internet connection via BT, requires additional software. GNUBox does just that.

Either they've been moved to another home screen or dropped in a folder, in which case doing a search or resetting the Home Screen layout (Settings/General/Reset) should bring them up, or they've been turned off in General/Restrictions.

    Hi cbafiero,
It seems that the problem lies in your router. I'm not sure exactly what the issue is (I've just now discovered it myself), but after switching from a Linksys WRT54GX2 to a thrift store Netgear, my shared libraries appeared instantly. My gut is telling me that the Linksys routers are blocking the multicast traffic, which is stupid on Linksys's part, to filter traffic internally. I'll look more into the Netgear and see what it has that the Linksys doesn't (or vice versa).

  • Screen sharing between Lion and Snow Leopard

Does anyone know whether it is possible to do Screen Sharing between two Macs where one is using lion and the other Snow Leopard?  I use this feature to help my father with his computer problems but am wary about upgrading my machine to Lion without an assurance that it will work across OS's.  He is in Europe where I believe Lion a) may not yet have been released and b) think it unlikely anyway that I will be able to encourage him to change something he is already finding difficult (aged 84) having never had to use a computer prior to 3 years ago at my behest.

after reading your post, i thought i'd do the same on my lion machine -- toggle screen sharing off and back on -- only to discover that it was *already* off, although it was positively enabled on the same machine when running snow leopard.
i never disabled it, as i use the feature quite regularly, which is why it never occurred to me to check the sharing settings, because i always leave screen sharing on. but apparently installing lion either caused the setting to revert, or it's possible lion simply installs with screen-sharing off by default. (who knows.)
    regardless -- a simple fix.
    thanks.

  • File sharing between Mac and PC CS5

While our graphic designer, who uses a Mac, is on maternity leave, I am doing whatever graphics-type work we have on my work PC. I have CS5 and so does the Mac (I have checked multiple times, we both have CS5; NOT CS5.5 on either machine). I cannot open many of her InDesign files because it says that I don't have some of the same plug-ins. I have tried just copying her plug-ins, but an error occurs when I try to copy them. I realize some things may be missing, but I should at least be able to open those files. We am I missing? Or will upgrading both to CS5.5 solve this problem?
This is very frustrating as I can't really get anything done moving around between offices and computers all day; this is why we have a shared drive system. Please let me know what we can do.

If in doubt about an InDesign document version, you can use my IDentify script: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4071273#4071273 (if only to make absolutely sure these files are, in fact, '5 files, and not '5.5s).
It's strange & somewhat worrying that your InDesign won't update -- the latest version is 7.0.4 and that's what the updater ought to install. HOWEVER, I do not believe InDesign would refuse to load a document from an updated version. That just can't be right.
So, please try my little script. Just in case this co-worker happened to have the newer version somewhere at home, or something like that.

  • Insufficient privledges when sharing between iMac and Powerbook

I just upgraded both my powerbook and iMac to Leopard and want to turn on file sharing between the two. The way it used to work with Tiger, I would just click on the drive on my network and it would give me read and write privledges. Now it is saying that I have insufficient privledges. I can get the powerbook to mount the iMac and vice versa but can't seem to do much else.
I am trying to move my iPhoto library from my Powerbook to my iMac.
    Thanks

If you are trying to write directly into the iPhoto Library, note that it is not a regular folder but a package. The permissions on the iPhoto Library package only allow writing by the owner, so another approach is needed, such as those mentioned in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198

  • Catalog sharing between Lightroom and Photoshop Elements

Can the catalog be shared between Lightroom 2 and Photoshop Elements 10?

Lightroom and PSE cannot share catalogs (although the same image can be in both)
PSE catalogs can be upgraded to Lightroom catalogs, but then changes made in Lightroom are not reflected in PSE. You cannot go the other way, Lightroom catalogs cannot be converted to PSE catalogs.
Lastly, I strongly recommend that you use only a single "organizing" application. The idea of using two (or more) different "organizing" applications will lead to confusion and errors and lack of synchronization.

  • Home Sharing between pc and ipad. Where is the library and sharing icon on ipad?

Hi, I have followed the exact Apple instructions on how to set up Home sharing on both Pc and ipad2. However when going to music app or videos app, I see no icon for the library or shared library as shown on the screen shots. Tried to see supports troubleshooting, but there is no indications on how , where and when these Libraries should show up. There is something saying you should immediately create a library on your ipad, but no instructions on how to do so. So for any of you with a successfull sharing setup between pc and ipad, any tips are appreciated. I.e. When and where will the shared library show up on the ipad if it ever will?

When you turn on Home Sharing on your PC you will only see the Sharing option in the sidebar if other computers on your network also have iTunes running with Home Sharing turned on as well.
As for how to get it to work on your iPhone go into Settings on your iPhone and scroll down to Music. Tap on the Music settings button. On the Music screen, in the Home Sharing section enter the Apple ID and password that you use on your PC.
Now go back to your Home screen. Launch the Music app. Tab on the More button on the bottom of the screen. On the More screen tap on the Shared button. You should see a list of all available shared iTunes libraries on your network. Make sure iTunes is running on on your PC with home Sharing turned on. You should now see all the music on your PC's shared library. You will not however be able to wirelessly transfer the music from the shared library to your iPhone. You will only be able to play it.

  • Is it possible to use screen sharing between lion and mountain lion

I could always use screen sharing between my 2010 macbook and my 2007 macmini, both with lion. But now since I upgraded the macbook to mountain loin it doesn't work. The macmini did at first show up on the macbook finder sidebar under sharing like it always had done but as soon as I tried to connect the sharing option disappeared and won't come back. The macmini can still see the macbook however, its on the finder there. But when I try to connect from the mini to the macbook I get an error message that says something like "server error" and contact administrator(that's me!)I can't upgrade the mini to mountain lion as it's too old.So it this an incompatibility between the two operating systems or is it something else?
I also tried to do it with BackTo My Mac,enabled through icloud on both computers but no luck, not even showing the Back to my Mac icon on either Finder sidebar like it's supposed to.When I did it through system preferences-icloud,it said this was successfully enabled but it just doesn't work at all.
Cross about this since I always use the macbook to control the macmini which is plugged into a flat screen tv and it's much easier than fiddling around with a mouse and keyboard.

I can screen share my wife's Lion iMac using Mountain Lion and the reverse is true. If the computer is not showing up to be selected under shard on the left column of the finder it is probable a connection issue. I would check my home network, restart the the macs and toggle the sharded settings and energy saving settings like wake for network activity. Be sure and set up iCloud on both your macs and turn on UPnP if you have a router for your home network serving up NAT IP Numbers. UPnG will make the port forwarding enteries in you router to allow you macs to connect behind the firewall created by nat addressing.
I am currently having a problem with back to my mac. S
creen shares great the the Lion iMac but Mountain Lion to Mountain on one computer will not connect if the computer is sleeping. It lights the screen on the sleeping computer but never shows on the computer requesting to share. File share always workd. If I wake the computere before I attemp the connection, screen share work as it should. If I try to screen share while the second computer is sleeping, It will never work again until I restart the iMac.

  • Sharing between iOS and 10.7.2

For the last 4-6 months, I have been unable to use Home Sharing between either of my iOS Devices (1st gen iPad and iPhone 3GS--both running iOS 5) and my primary desktop machine. It use to work, then for some reason unbeknownst to me, it stopped and I have not been able to get it to work since.   All devices are logged into the same iTunes account, all devices are properly registered, all devices are set up to home share.  However, if I choose "Shared Libraries" and select the desktop machine, it will load about a third of the way before crashing and sending the iOS device back to the home screen.
Here is what has been done in the past 4-6 months in an effort to resolve this:
    * All applicable updates have been run.
    * All iOS devices have been restored (as new)
    * Firewall has been deactivated
    * iTunes has been removed and reinstalled
    * Computer was archieved and installed
    * Router settings have been tried on both WPA and WEP
    * Router was reset
    * Router was replaced
And still after all of this, they continue to crash out when trying to load a shared library.  It is almost as if the database file that it is trying to read for Home Sharing is corrupted and this file is not being corrected by reinstallation or any other options that I've tried.
If anyone has any suggestions, that would be awesome.

Mail should be in /var/imap unless you installed an alternate mail system: you referenced Dovecot? Did you have Dovecot running on SLS?
The /var/imap directory should be existent even if you never enabled SLS's Mail service, with contents like:
    drwxr-xr-x  8 _cyrus  mail  272 Oct 25  2010 db
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 log
    -rw-------     1 _cyrus  mail  144 Oct 25  2010 mailboxes.db
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 msg
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 proc
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 ptclient
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 socket
    drwxr-xr-x  2 _cyrus  mail   68 Oct 25  2010 sync
This is from a server that never had Mail enabled..
I have no idea whether the the command you referenced would do a migration if there is no /var/imap directory on the source volume.
