Why isn't Time Capsule showing up in Disk Utility?

I'm trying to move a Time Machine backup from an external HD to a .5TB Time Capsule [2008]. I've researched and researched and tried it all.
First, I tried dragging the backups.backupdb to the Time Machine folder as advised in several places. Got the error message "The volume is the wrong format for a backup" altho' I reset the TC to defaults before starting.
Then I tried to do a restore from the external HD holding my Time Machine backups to the TC but the TC isn't showing up as a disk in the left column of disk utility....so I can't select it as a destination drive.
The TC is connected and functioning properly. I started a TM backup on it to see if it was working and it is. I just want all my TM history to migrate to the TC without having to start from scratch.
Also, the TM backups on the external HD are in plain English...all files and folders are readable. The backup I started on the TC is a .sparsebundle and just a single image.
Please advise. I need to send the external HD back to manufacturer as it is making horrific noises.
HELP! [and thanks]

  • HT1338 I erased my Time Capsule HD using the Disk Utility on my Vista computer

I erased my Time Capsule HD using the Disk Utility on my Vista computer and I now can not see my TC in my computer. I tried to remap it by right clicking my computer and selecting remap drive, but after selecting Z drive I cannot find TC in browser. Not sure if I did something wrong but it was working fine before I erased it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To erase the OSX on your harddisk you have to boot your Mac from the OSx Install DVD that came with your Mac.
You can't erase the OSx from which your Mac is booted.

  • Why Doesnt the Time Capsule show up my New Raid Setup External HD?

I purchased a new enclosure for a RAID 1 setup (2, 1TB hard drives) and plugged it into my MacBook PRO to use disk utility to set up. The setup was fine. I then plugged this unit into the Time Capsule UBS port and it shows up on the airport application (2, 923gb drives) but does NOT show up on the network - which is what I want it to do. I know the USB port on the TC works because I have a small portable hard drive, plug that in and it shows up. I then unplug it, plug in the RAID and it does not show up on the network but does show up on the airport application.
I hope someone can help me with this.
    Skip
PS: I have a second question about partitioning this RAID 1 set up but not sure if this is the correct place to pose that question. basically, I want to partition this RAID 1 into 3 partitions; one for Time Machine, one for superduper clone image, and one for misc. extra space. Perhaps you can guide me on where to post this question.

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • How do I get my Time Capsule to appear in Disk Utility so I can repair it as instructed by Time Machine do to?

Time Machine twice reported it couldn't complete the backup to Time Capsule, and I should do a Repair Permission on Time Capsule. Unfortunately, it fails to appear in Disk Utility - only the iMac hard drive appears. What do I do?

I found this same question in the archives. I followed the instructions to click on New Image, but there is no Shared item on the left as suggested, so don't know what to do next. Cannot understand why Time Capsule fails to appear when it is plugged into the iMac!

  • Should Time Capsule be visible in Disk Utility

I don't see Time Capsule as a HD drive in Disk Utility. I also can't see it using Data REscue II. It there something wrong with the Time capsule ? How do you restore repair or recover data from the time capsule?

Each of the backups on the Time Capsule is a sparsebundle. You can see the sparsebundle(s) by clicking on Time Capsule under Shared in a Finder window, then after a moment or two you can double click on the Time Capsule folder. To attempt to repair a backup, do the following. Bear in mind that the Repair function could take a few hours. I prefer to run it overnight so I don't stress about it. There's nothing like reviewing Repair messages over steaming hot cup o' java.
    - Turn off Time Machine on the Mac that backs up to the sparsebundle in question. (The Mac's name is in the sparsebundle's name).
    - Double click on the sparsebundle.
    - Once the "Opening" dialog appears, click "Skip" to skip the check.
    - You have now mounted the virtual backup drive stored in the sparsebundle -- it shows up under your list of Devices in the Finder window.
    - Open Disk Utility
    - Select "Backup of [machine name]" in the left pane
    - Select the First Aid tab if it's not already selected
    - Click on Repair disk
    - Give it a few hours.
Sometimes, if the sparsebundle can't be repaired, the solution is to delete the sparsebundle and start over. Perhaps Data Rescue works on a mounted sparsebundle -- I'm not sure.
It's unlikely you need to repair the Time Capsule's drive itself, as it usually has very few files on it (just the sparsebundles), and it's disk directory is rarely updated.

  • Time Capsule not visible in disk utility

i'm trying to create a disk image on my time capsule to so i can store some seperate media files and the time capsule is not available in the disk utility when its connected via the network. do I need to be connected through and ethernet cord for this to work?
    Thanks.

When you click New Image, a setup box will appear.
Make sure that the little arrow in the top box next to Save As appears in the "up" position
Look for your Time Capsule under the SHARED heading in the Finder window on the left
    Click the Time Capsule icon
Then double click on the Time Capsule folder to the right
Type a name in the Save As box at the top
    Name the Disk Image
Select the size of image that you want
Keep the format of Mac OS Extended Journaled and single partition and read/write disk image
    Click Create
It takes about an hour for a 25-30 GB disk image to be created, so do this using Ethernet. Allow 3-5 times longer if you do this using wireless
Some users find it easier to save the Disk Image to the desktop and then move it over the Time Capsule disk, but this takes longer.

  • Time Capsule Not Seen By Disk Utility, Not On Desktop

My 1T TC works like a champ and backs up as expected. Can TC be used as an ordinary external HD in addition to being the location of TM back ups. The TC does not appear on my desktop and is not discovered by Disk Utility.

    Rocky,
Be very careful with the xxxxxx.sparsebundle file. That is an image of all of your Time Machine backups. Leave it alone unless you want to delete all of your backups.
If you do want to delete your Time Machine backups, use the gear icon just above the xxxxx.sparsebundle file. Click the .sparsebundle file to highlight it and select Move to Trash. This is only safe way to do this.
There is also an alternate way to delete your backups and wipe the Time Capsule clean if that is what you want to do. Open AirPort Utility, select Manual Setup, click on the Disks icon, then click on the Disks tab just below that and select Erase. This is probably the better option if you want to start over with a clean disk.
Now, if you want to create a folder or folders on the Time Capsule to move files into, use that same gear shaped icon in the preceding paragraph and select New Folder. Once you see the folder, you can rename it as needed. Create more folders in the same way. You can drag files into the folder from the desktop.
I haven't tried any kind of automated backups into the folders and don't know if this might be possible.
If you add folders and keep your Time Machine backups, Time Machine will leave the folders alone even if the TC is full and deleting old backups to make room for new Time Machine backups.
Hope this helps. Just be careful and you will be fine.

  • Time Capsule shows up as Computer in Sidebar

    Hi,
Each time after the iMac waked up from sleep the sidebar-icon of the Time Capsule has changed to the icon for a normal computer (Monitor). Restarting the Finder helps to show the correct icon (little Time Capsule) but after the next sleepmode the wrong icon is back.
This happens just on one MAC in the network, the others are showing the correct icon at any time even after waking up from sleep.
I've searched the web over and over and it seems that some other people have the same issue sometimes (i.g. here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/10731493#10731493) but I never found a solutuion for that.

    Hi,
I have the same issue. Time Capsule shows up as both a Time Capsule (with correct icon) and as a PC File Server...
Could it be because i've used it to transfer files, over the air, from my old PC laptop to an iMac?
Anyone have an idea about this?

  • Why did my time capsule stopped backing up?

Why would my time capsule stop backing up, it is set to delet when the drive is full?

    LaPastenague wrote:
Many people report that TM no longer deletes old backups as it should.
That does happen sometimes, but for many different reasons.
TM should never run out of space
Yes, it can.  First, remember that it deletes entire backups, not the backups of individual files.  Second, it won't ever delete the last remaining backup.
So if it needs to do a very large backup, there needs to be room for the last remaining backup, plus the new one, plus some workspace.  That's why we recommend that the TM drive be 3-4 times the size of the data it's backing-up.  If it's much less than that, and there's a need for a large or full backup, there may not be enough room.
as i understand how it works, it should simply give a warning that the old backups need to be deleted.
That's how it worked on Leopard, if you had the "Warn when old backups are deleted" option checked -- the backup would fail if there wasn't room.  All you had to do then was remove the check, but many folks didn't understand that.
So, effective with Snow Leopard, the option is now "Notify after old backups are deleted," and that's what happens -- old backups are deleted automatically when necessary, and a notice is sent only after the new backup completes.
It seems that after an upgrade install of the OS.. TM ceases to have the ability to delete old backups.. it simply runs out of space and refuses to backup.
Normally not.  Some have turned out to be users who actually did a "clean install," erasing their internal HD.  If you do that, and don't use either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to put your data back (and transfer Computer Settings), the erased drive is treated as a different one.  In that case, TM will do a full backup, so requires a lot space.
However, effective with Mountain Lion, TM does add more space for "padding" than before, sometimes quite a bit more, so a drive that was barely large enough on Lion or earlier may be too small now.
EDIT:  A good way to figure out what's going on is to look at the log messages, either by using Console and filtering for backupd, or via the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting

  • Time capsule shows up as pc server in finder sidebar

no idea what is happening, but i just turned on my macbook, which is always connected to the time capsule, and it is recognizing my time capsule as a "pc server" and it doesn't have the normal little time capsule icon in the side bar in finder. has anyone had this problem? doesn't always let me connect either. thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Time Capsule shows error message "Conflicting DHCP Range."

I just set up a wireless network using a Time Capsule as the main router with an Airport Extreme bridged to it so I can have a strong signal downstairs. It all worked fine at first, but at some point the Time Capsule showed this error message on Airport Utility: "Conflicting DHCP Range."
The instructions that pop up when I click on the error message are beyond my level of understanding. They say: "This Airport base station rejected a DHCP address in the same subnet as its internal DHCP server. Try switching your Airport Base Station from using DHCP and NAT to bridge mode. If you still want to use DHCP and NAT to share a single IP address, change your DHCP range."
Could one of you tell me what I should do? Thanks.

Try switching your Airport Base Station from using DHCP and NAT to bridge mode.
I suggest that you do what AirPort Utility suggests.....
Open up AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Express and click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the window
Insure that the setting for Router Mode is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update to save the settings and give the AirPort Express a minute to restart
