Why isn't UUID working with the mount command/fstab in OS X Lion?

Question

Trying to set up an external drive to mount automatically at boot. 
# cat /etc/fstab
UUID=55E542B9-60B5-3F47-B845-D9DF3EC30D92 /tmp/foo hfs rw,noauto 0 0
# diskutil info /dev/disk2s2 | grep UUID
   Volume UUID:              55E542B9-60B5-3F47-B845-D9DF3EC30D92
# mount /tmp/foo
GetMasterBlock: Error 2 opening UUID=55E542B9-60B5-3F47-B845-D9DF3EC30D92
GetMasterBlock: Error 2 opening UUID=55E542B9-60B5-3F47-B845-D9DF3EC30D92
mount_hfs: No such file or directory
Tutorials I've found seem to indicate this should work but I'm not having any luck.  The diskutil mount command works fine, but I'm trying to get this automated without writing my own LaunchAgent to run some shell script.  My options are rw,noauto because right now I'm just experimenting and I'm not really worried about mounting at boot, this isn't even the real disk i'll end up using.

I read that thread but, maybe I'm missing something, I didn't see an actual solution in the thread.  That being said, technically the man pages don't really claim mount actually supports UUID, only fstab.  I suppose diskutil probably reads it for a reference as well since mounting via diskutil does indeed work.  Unless someone comes up with a way to do with with mount I plan on just using diskutil in a LaunchAgent and making sure the correct settings are on to make sure the filesystem stays mounted without users logging in.
