Why Itunes duplicates all of my songs ?

Hi
I have downloaded and uninstalled Itunes and I still have same songs showing 2 and 3 times
How can I correct this?
Thanks

Because, in some way, you have inadvertently told it to...
Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls, such as lost ratings or playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • ITunes duplicates all of the songs in my library when I try to import it

I haven't used iTunes for years.  I've just installed the latest iTunes on my computer and am trying to add songs from a previous library by dragging into iTunes.  Problem is, it carries out some sort of conversion on the files and, in the process, duplicates every song into the iTunes library.  Anybody know why, please?

Dragging over the old files if they are outside the designated iTunes Media folder is usually seen as a request to make local copies inside the iTunes Media folder.
Make sure you have updated to iTunes 11.0.1 (or later).
Enable the menu bar with ctrl-b if needed
Use Edit > Preferences > General > Show list views for all media
In Music use the Songs view, or select the List view for other media/playlists
Use View > Display Duplicates or, more usefully, hold Shift and use View > Display Exact Duplicates.
Keep one of each repeated group of files and don't send to the recycle bin unless you are sure that there are multiple files on the disc as opposed to multiple entries to the same file.
There is also my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. This can preserve ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. which are lost in a manual clean up. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background on deduping and the script.

  • Hello, i was wondering why itunes retains all old backups of ipad/ipone... is thier a way of overwritting the backups when a new one is created ?

Hello, i was wondering why itunes retains all old backups of ipad/ipone... is thier a way of overwritting the backups when a new one is created ?

    That is covered here:
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
What kind of photos are you talking about?
Ones in the iPod's Camera Roll album are included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes. Photos synced to the iPod or not and they are not in your iTunes library either. You have to back those up separately.
Also the iPod backup that iTunes makes is not included in your iTunes library. It location is listed here:
iTunes: About iOS backups. So back that up too.

  • Itunes duplicates all songs

Why does iTunes duplicate every single song on my MAC?  Sometimes 3 or 4 tiimes

Highlight a track, then press command+R to see to which file it points. Are they all the same file?
Look at the "kind" column. Are they all the same format?  If you import a CD as one format, then convert it to another it will result in two copies of the same track with each format.

  • Copying my Playlists Duplicates All of the Songs

    Hi All-
I have two iTunes librarys; one in lossless format for the Sonos/Home Stereo and a "duplicate" library in the MP3 format on an external drive for the iPods.
I have created playlists in the lossless library and would like to move them to the MP3 library/iPods. However, when I copy/export to XML/import/otherwise move them to the MP3 library, iTunes copies all of the tracks (in lossless format) to the MP3 library. (I'm worried that this is because the playlists are set to find the lossless files, not simply a list of tracks.)
Is there a way to get around having to recreate my playlists or avoid the duplications?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

I'm afraid that a playlist entry is always linked to a specific file. I don't believe iTunes is smart enough to look for a song with the same data.
So unless you find all these songs manually, I don't think there's a way.
    Hope this helps.

  • ITunes recognizes all Iron Maiden songs but IPod only 3

    Hi there!
I have this issue with many artist in my IPod, i.e. Iron Maiden.
ITunes sees all the songs of every artist. They all have the same name (no extra spaces, etc). But IPod only finds couple of them when playing.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thank you in advance.

Suddenly it acts as if nothing is stored upon it, but when I plug it in my computer and use iTunes, here I am not alone able to see all my files I can also play them back from here!
hmmmm. with those symptoms, it might be worth checking to see if you're getting a Windows drive letter confusion. for troubleshooting information on that possibility, see the following document:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • Mystery of why itunes won't play certain songs - quicktime plays them fine

    symptoms:
most of my songs play normally.
the songs that don't play do show up normally in itunes playlist. when i try to play them, however, itunes skips over them immediately and moves on to the next file in the playlist.
this is not a standard "file not found"-type of error. no error message appears. the songs do NOT get a little grey exclamation on them afterwards.
after being skipped, the last played date and play count of the song file is updated in my library as though itunes thinks it played the song normally.
if right-click on the song in itunes and say "show sound file", the file is visible in the finder. if i view a preview in the finder, i CAN PLAY THE FILE FROM THE FINDER PREVIEW window, which makes this whole situation very odd.
i can also open the files and play them in quicktime player.app. they play fine.
the songs in question seem to be mostly old (~5 yrs) files that were encoded in a very old version of itunes (before it was called itunes) called soundjam. still i am pretty sure they are valid mp3 files. i'm quite sure that i have played them with itunes in the past, though i am not sure how long it has been since i last played them - perhaps a few years.
somehow it appears that the standard quicktime player for mp3 files is perfectly happy with this files, yet there is something about them that itunes does not like.
the files have relatively low bitrates (they are digitized versions of old cassette tapes). at least some of them (perhaps all) show in itunes as being encoded with SoundJam 2.6.2, and having variable bit rate.
i am using the latest version of itunes on mac os 10.4.6.
    any suggestions?

so i think you understand that i was upset to find out that they had become unplayable/unconvertable in itunes.
Yes, I do understand. I have a few recordings of family members who died a few decades ago. They're still on tape and I want to digitize them before the magnetic particles "all point to the magnetic poles again".
I'm still in doubt in which format to store them however.
I digitized most of my old vinyl to AIFF and then converted them to Apple Lossless to save HD space.
The costs of large capacity disks have decreased over the years, so I'm thinking to leave the digitized recordings in AIFF format.
This format looks to last for at least a few decades (I hope).
I remember when old data on some type of punchcards (is this correct English?) had to be converted to go in the computer age.
The machines to read them already had been demolished, so they had to build a new one :/

  • ITunes erased all of my songs

When I just synced my iPhone with my computer all of my songs that I didn't buy from iTunes were erased. These were songs I had downloaded from CD and don't have anymore and songs I bought from other music sites. About 1000 songs are gone. Is this some kind of scam Apple has going on? To use iPhone and iTunes I can only have songs bought from Apple? Is this because of the new Mavericks I installed? I have used Apple only since 1994 and I am really considering other options over this.

Post not clear. Erased from the phone or erased from the computer?
Had the phone been synced before?
You no longer have the CDs?  You should keep CDs until you have completely finished with the music, then dispose of both the CD and any files made from it.  The CD is quasi your license to listen to the music.
No, probably millions of people who own i-devices have music from other sources.  There's something about your configuration or what you did that resulted in this but there's insufficient information to say right now.

  • I had to buy a new computer and just loaded iTunes. All my old songs are gone. Can I load them back in from my iPod?

my old system crashed and the disk with my itunes library was lost. I've loaded iTunes on my new computer. How can I recreate my songs? Can they be loaded to the computer disk from my iPod nano?

Important: The first time you connect iPod nano to a computer that it’s not synced with, a message asks if you want to sync songs automatically. If you accept, all songs, audiobooks, and other content are erased from iPod nano and replaced with songs and other items from that computer. You can prevent iPod nano from syncing when you connect it to a computer other than the one you usually sync with.
Turn off automatic syncing for iPod nano:
In the iTunes Summary tab, deselect “Open iTunes when this iPod is connected,” and then click Apply.
If you turn off automatic syncing, you can still sync by clicking the Sync button.
Transferring purchased content to another computer
Content that you purchase in iTunes on one computer can be transferred from iPod nano to an iTunes library on another computer. The other computer must be authorized to play content from your iTunes Store account.
    Authorize another computer:
Open iTunes on the other computer and choose Store > Authorize This Computer.mm
Transfer purchased content to another computer:
1 Open iTunes on the other computer and choose Store > Authorize This Computer.
2 Connect iPod nano to the newly authorized computer.
3 In iTunes, choose File > Transfer Purchases from iPod.

  • Itunes deleted all of my songs

My family got a new computer and i wanted to put itunes on it. When i loaded itunes and plugged my ipod in, itunes deleted every last song i had. what do i do? an how can i get them back?

You apparently had your iPod on autosync. You should have gotten a message when you docked the iPod to the new computer that said something to the effect about your iPod is set-up for another iTunes library, do you want to make this iTunes library the one on your iPod? Yes or NO. Those aren't the exact words, but I think you get the message. You apparently said Yes. Bottom line when you said yes, docked to an empty iTunes library, the autosync wiped out the contents of your iPod. The purpose of autosync is to make the iPod contents a mirror image of iTunes contents, no iTunes content, no iPod contents. Unfortunately, unless you had your library backed up or still have access to the other computer, I'm afraid there's nothing you can do. If you do have access to the other computer that still has your library, simply re-sync your iPod to that computer. By all means, DO NOT DOCK you iPod to the new system until you have iTunes completely installed & your library has been moved to the new system.

  • WHY ITUNE SYNC ALL APPLICATIONS IN THE IPAD EVERYTIME THE IPAD IS CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER?

I HAVE BEEN USING MY IPAD 2 FOR TWO WEEKS. LAST NIGHT, WHEN I CONNECTED MY IPAD WITH THE LAPTOP, THE ITUNE STARTED TO SYNC ALL APPLICATIONS IN THE IPAD. I TOOK ALMOST 6 HOURS TO FINISH THE SYNC. THIS AFTERNOON, I TURNED OFF THE IPAD, THEN TURNED ON AGAIN. WHEN I CONNECTED IT TO THE LAPTOP, SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN.

You need to restore your iPad but do not restore from a backup, restore as a new device otherwise you will transfer all the same apps again. My guess is one or more are not compatible or corrupted.

After you have restored as new, sync 5 apps at time then test the iPad. Process of elimination.

  • I synced my phone to the new iTunes, and all my purchased songs disappeared. How to I get them to show up?

  • How do I get all of the songs from the iPhone back up to show up in my iTunes library?

I just want all of my songs to show up in my library so that I can add my new CDs to my iPhone without loosing any music. If you have any idea on how I can so this, please help me!!

Why aren't all of your songs on your computer?
You can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone to your computer: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

  • I purchased an album on iTunes and all songs downloaded, but one song is not associated with my Apple ID (I can't play it).

I bought an album from iTunes. All of the songs play except one. When I double click on it, a message comes up saying this computer is not authorized to play it, asking me if I want to authorize the computer. Yet when I log in with my ID, the response is that the computer is already authorized.  Then it skips to the next song. I have updated iTunes through software update and am using 11.0.4 (4). I have tried to reboot the computer but the situation stays the same.
I also deleted the file from iTunes to try re-downloading it. The song appears in my list of purchased songs, but when I try to download it again, I get an error message that says "This computer is already associated with an Apple ID. If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you cannot auto download or download past purchases with a different Apple ID for 90 days." My options at this point are a "Transfer" button or a "Cancel" button. Transfer what? What is it talking about?? I purchased and downloaded the complete album at once, obviously with the same Apple ID---the ONLY Apple ID I have ever had and the ONLY Apple ID ever used on this computer! How is one song mysteriously associated with a different account? What is the point of purchasing music legally if it doesn't work? Can anyone help me get this song to play in iTunes? The other strange thing is that it plays just fine in finder.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

If only one track on the album is throwing that message, that suggests the track is damaged.
If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copy of the track and try redownloading a fresh one. See the following document for instructions:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
