  • Why is iTunes running slow

    I'm using iTunes 10.7 (avoiding iTunes 11 because you can't have multiple playlists open at the same time with it) on my MacBook Pro.  I have a large library on an external Thunderbolt drive.  I'm finding iTunes running annoyingly slow quite.  I've eliminated all but one or two smart playlists, but have more a couple of hundred regular playlists.  Looking for suggestions on how to speed up iTunes.

    No it's not your computer. The newest version of itunes is basically unusable. It will freeze, not only the program itself, but it will slow your whole computer to a crawl, or more usually, to a completely frozen state. I've done some time checks:
    After clicking on a song, it took over 40 seconds before the song actually played.
    After sliding the volume slider to the left to descrease volume, it took over 90 seconds for the change to actually be implemented.
    I haven't listend to music for months on my computer because of this stupid memory hog of a program. Never had a problem until some of the more recent updates.
    Apparently itunes philosophy is "If it ain't broke, break it."

  • Is there a program that will check for viruses or other reasons why it runs slow?

    For several months my iMac has been running slow or freezing often. Safari often quits unexpectedly as does mail on occasion.

    Programs that check for viruses are a major cause of slow Macs, so let's look at doing steps that don't handicap your computer:
    1) How full is your hard drive? You need a minimum of 10G free for background processes such as Virtual Memory.
    2) How much RAM is installed? RAM for the Mid-2010s is rather cheap at the moment, I upgraded my 27-inch Mid-2010 recently from the original 4GB to 12 GB for about US$55. Installation took only minutes.
    3) If you have an external hard drive for backups, are you using something other than Time Machine to do the backups. Many third-party backup programs can cause a performance hit.
    The next step is a little longer. It checks to see if some runaway background process is eating processor cycles and slowing you down:
    1) Use your computer normally for typical tasks for several hours, then quit any applications you have launched. Do not restart.
    2) In Applications > Utilities, find Activity Monitor. If you've not used it before, you have to change a setting. At the top of the AM window is a "Show" option. By default it is set to show "My Processes." Change it to "All Processes" like this:
    4) Now highlight the "%CPU"column as shown so the most active processes "bubble"to the top (tiny arrow points down).
    Now watch things move up and down for a minute of two. What you are looking for is any single process that is using more than about 10 percent of the processor cycles while the computer is idling. If you see one doing that, post its name in a reply here.
    Awaiting your report,
    Allan

  • Is there a technical explanation for why iTunes runs so slow?

    I seem to experience a lack of performance using iTunes on a PC. It doesn't seem to matter which PC as I have tried many over the years. But the problems persist. Slow program loading, syncing problems, (both USB and wi-fi), iTunes Match problems, program freezes and unresponsiveness, changing from "Install" to "Will Install" in app lists. It really detracts from the over all experience with my iPhone and iPad. I have talked to people with Macs and they never seem to have these problems. I am curious as to why the difficulty in running iTunes on the PC platform. I have never really found a resource that directly addresses the matter and am looking for suggestions other than faster computers or reinstalling, which I have done many times.

    It would help if you could be more specific about the problems you're experiencing.  I run iTunes on a variety of Windows systems: a 10-year desktop running WinXP SP3 / 32 bit, a desktop running Win7 / 32 bit, two laptops running Win7 / 64 bit and a netbook running Win8.1 / 64 bit. The only performance issues I see are on the older machines, where some library operations can be a little slow but these can be explained by the size of my library (approx. 600 Gb).  There are, however, all sorts of combinations of hardware and operating system that can affect application performance - iTunes is something of a memory-hog so can contribute to performance issues if running at the same time as other memory, processor, or disc intensive applications.  One example I had in the past was the combination of iTunes with a resource-hungry anti-virus utility (solved by changing the latter and making sure that scheduled scans happen at times when I'm highly unlikely to be running iTunes).

  • Itunes Running Slow

    Hi All, I purchased the mac about a year ago for music (logic and itunes) as i loved itunes on the pc the more the music catalogue grew the slower itunes got. I purchased a mac mini and with a largish collection all was working fine. I then decided to rip some music videos, and noticed that around 15 seconds into the song the video would freeze I thought that maybe the mac mini was not up to the job with its 5200rpm drive so VLC most of the videos to watch. Itunes recently has also slowed down with spinning beach ball a lot of the time this is because I drastically increased the size of the audio catalogue to doube in size.
    I have pinpointed the problem to the way itunes handles its cataogue. Everytime I get a freeze looking in the itunes folder where the xml and itl file is a temp file appears then dissapears. It seems its writing about 100MB each time this temp file appears, im guessing its updating the database with the playcounts etc. I moved these files to firewire external drive and it speeded things up a little however the problem still exists with a blip in playback on every video without fail.
    Has anyone been able to fix this issue? I am guessing that a mac pro would be a solution as it would be able to handle the writing of the temp file at the same time as keeping OSX running and the video playing but would like to avoid this. Seems like bad programming to me? There should be more than 1 database?
    Thanks
    Shane.

    To add - writing 100MB file to the itunes firewire drive while a video is playing does not cause the video to jitter!

  • ITunes running slow, slowing down PC

    I love my idevices but iTunes was running brutally slow and slowing down my PC to a point beyond functioning. My laptop is a bit old in computer years but it runs anything else I throw at it adequately.
    If you are having the same problem it seems I've found at least one possible cause. Genius. I turned genius off and it seems to be running like a normal program now. I would recommend if you are experiencing the same problem, unless you can't live without it, disable genius. It is located in the "Store" tab.
    Hope this can help someone else.

  • Itunes running slow and freezing

    Just bought a ipod classic 80gb, i've downloaded itunes 7.6 without a problem. But Everytime I open the program it seems to freeze, although I can still move the cursor i'm unable to open any menu choices. I tried uninstalling the software and reinstalling but it still doesn't work properly. Can anyone help

    Thanks for that. Is there any way I can speed up my CPU?

  • Can't recover songs and itunes very slow

    My computer crashed and had to be totally restored so I lost itunes and everything. I downloaded it again and proceeded to try to sync with my nano. First of all, itunes was running way slow...so slow that I thought the computer was freezing but its not. Itunes is the ONLY program that this happens to. When I plugged my ipod in it said it wasn't synced with this computer and gave me two options to sync it, both of which would have pretty much wiped everything off of it.
    I did some digging and found that I needed to get some software to pull the songs off of my ipod and put them back in itunes. I opted for Media Widget and it worked very well. It pulled all of the music off of my ipod and put it back into itunes. When I synce my ipod with itunes it started uploading the songs as expected but then I started getting messages similar to "this computer is not authorized to play (name of song)." I started looking into it and it is all of my purchased music from the itunes store. Its all in itunes but it won't upload to the ipod. So I thought I'd just create a few audio discs from the purchased playlist and then rip them into itunes and remake the playlist. Nope, itunes won't let me burn those songs to a disc, either.
    So, I'm frustrated and a little angry that I can't get music that I paid for back onto my ipod. Anybody have any suggesions? Also, why is itunes running slower than molasses in January?

    It seems I just needed to do a bit more digging. All I had to do was to authorize my computer in itunes and it loaded all of the songs to my ipod and everything is working again with the ipod. Itunes is still painfully slow and I can"t figure out why. It's the only program that runs like that and it was pretty slow even before my computer crashed. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Format command runs slow on Windows2012 when run through service

    We have a windows service which performs some tasks. One of such task is format the given volume(volume name is passed from remote machine). We observed that till Windows2008 format was running properly. on Windows2012 same format starts correctly but runs
    very slow. One special case if if the format is quick it runs fast (same speed as windows2008).
    Another observation is when we start format as process though we set the priority high after start the priority of the process goes to normal
    Any reason why format runs slow?
    Any help/comments are welcome

    here is some code
    We do not use bat file but use process.
    Here is some part of code for this
    ProcessStartInfo FormatInfo = new ProcessStartInfo();
                    FormatInfo.CreateNoWindow = true;
                    FormatInfo.UseShellExecute = false;
     FormatInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = true;
                    FormatInfo.RedirectStandardInput = true;
                    FormatInfo.FileName = "cmd.exe";
                    Process format_process = new Process();
                    format_process.StartInfo = FormatInfo;
                    if (true != format_process.Start())
                        int errCode = Marshal.GetLastWin32Error();

  • HT1338 why is my MacBook Air running slow and I bought the 11 inch with all memory and turbo boost

    why is my MacBook Air running slow and I bought the 11 inch with all memory and turbo boost

    Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
    Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Any change?
    Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
    Log out and log back in. Any change?
    Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
    Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
    If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
    Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
    Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
    If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
    If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • HT1430 Why does my iPad run slow

    Why is my iPad running slow and closes a page when I'm on it?

    Some general troubleshooting steps in order:
    Terminate the Safari Application and restart it. Click the Home button to return to App screen. Double click Home to bring up the App tray. Touch and hold the Safari icon until “-” appears. Touch the “-” to terminate Safari. Terminate all other Apps listed as well. Then restart Safari.
    Use Settings > Safari > Clear History and Clear Cookies and Data
    Restart iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off the device. To turn it back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
    Reset iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off".
    Restore iPad: Connect to iTunes on a PC/Mac and do a restore.

  • Why is my macbook pro running slow.  It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser.  I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out.  Would be super grateful.  :-)

    Hi.  This is my first time posting.  My Macbook Pro with Os X Mavericks has been running super slow since before I installed Mavericks so I'm pretty sure it's not the OS that has the problem.  It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser, particulary google chrome.  If mail is open...forget about it, down to a crawl.  I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out.  Would be super grateful.  :-)
    P.S. - Also, it sounds like something is loose inside my mac.  How should I proceed?
    Thanks in advance.
