Why IView Media Pro when iPhoto 6.0.2 seems like enough?

Probably a simple answer but it escapes me: Why would one use IView Media Pro 3.0.2 when iPhoto 6.0.2 seems to do many of the same things?
I am in the process of switching over from Microsoft/Windows to Mac. I have an extensive Location Scouting Database of pf photos (seems like somewhere between a trillion to a septillion after an hour of keywording...)
I don't edit, annotate, or rename, just categorize. It seems to me I can create a heirarchy of thumbnail folders and albums, keyword the photos and be done with it in iPhoto 6 without having to use additional software. Am I missing something by not using iView or just simplifying things by sticking with one software program(iPhoto)?

It depends on what your goal is in image management. iVMP is more flexible in assigning Catalog Sets (somewhat like albums) which can be hierarchical in nature and can be synced back to the original file. I use sets for family organization and keywords for individuals and elements within a photo. There's also Supplemental Categories which are also like albums. I use them for organizing photos for projects, web pages, etc. They can't be synced to the files. You have complete control of your folder system and are able to move files between folders from within iView and the links will be automatically updated. iView has auto update for folders. Drop a file in a folder and it will be added to the catalog on the next update cycle.
The version control is nice in iView as I can have several different edit versions at the same time.
I use iView as my primary and iPhoto, in the alias mode on the same source files, for books, calendars and cards. The best of both worlds IMO.
As iVMP is a little costly get started with iPhoto until you have a feel on how you want to proceed with your image management. iView will also catalog music, video, text, pdf, html and many other file formats. It's slideshow capability is not nearly as nice as iPhoto's but it's full screen editing is more advanced.
Good luck.

  • How to get ratings from iView Media Pro?

    Hi...
I'm wanting to move from iView Media Pro to iPhoto because:
    1) iPhoto's better and nicer editing features
    2) IPhoto is significantly faster on my quad with my raw files
    3) Better integration with other iLife apps
I'll very much miss iView's nicer organization and other features. I'm hoping I won't miss them so bad. I might though. For a year I've been manually using Photoshop elements to edit and importing into iPhoto whenever I wanted to use the other iLife apps. I'm tired of doing that. Also, iPhoto is so much faster now (it didn't used to be.)
But I have two problems I'm working through...
    (1) I loose all my precious iView ratings when importing to iPhoto. I tried "Synch Annotations" in iView, but iPhoto still didn't read the ratings. Worse...
    (2) iPhoto's image date is the last modified date of the file! And after using "Sych Annotations" all my modified dates are now today! I found and installed PhotoToolCM. This lets me change the file's creation and modified date to the capture date (alas, I have to go through each folder of files manually and "Select All" to do this. I'm willing to do this.)
    Any solution to (1)?
    Thanks,
    Erik

    Try the steps below:
Sync music files using Windows Media Player.
With a memory card inserted, and your phone showing the home screen, connect a  USB data cable to your phone and your computer. Your phone should show in the status bar.
Note: Your phone supports Microsoft® Windows® XP, Windows Vista®, and Apple® Macintosh®. Other operating systems may not be compatible.
Drag down the notification bar. Tap USB connected to select the connection. Tap Mount to connect your memory card to your computer. You can't use the files on your memory card while it is connected. On your computer, open Windows Media Player. On the "Sync" tab, select "More Options". Under "Device", select your phone Select "Properties", check the "Create folder hierarchy on device" box, and click "OK".
Drag your music files over to the "Sync List" and press "Start Sync".

  • IView Media Pro erases adjustments and ratings in Bridge CS3 and Camera RAW 4.2

OUCH! I seem to have lost about a day's worth of work. I rated and adjusted my Canon cr2 RAW files using Bridge CS3 and ACR 4.2. Then I used iView Media Pro 3.1.3 to add keywords. When I opened the files back up in Bridge CS3, my ratings and adjustements were gone. Actually, when I open the sidecar files in a text editor, I can see the adjustments, but ACR and Bridge can't read them. Anyone else seeing this? If so, how do you fix it or work around it???

Have you tried purge cache for folder?
iView Media Pro is now Expression Media 1, maybe this 'upgrade' works for you.
You know that you can add keywords and sets in Bridge as well?

  • 2 questions : expose / iview media pro

hi, i just purchased a new MPP OSX 10.7.2.... compare to the previous system's "Expose and Spaces", why does the new system not have "all windows" feature? and "space" number on the top right of the menu bar? or is it i have not found the switches?
often i have other documents hidden behind the top document.  old "all windows" exposes all of them.
it seems that OSX 10.7.2 does not work with my old iview media pro software. and it seems the software is no longer availabe for purchase. any suggestion? i need iview pro, i have so much work depending on this software.
    thank you.

Swipe down is Application windows, Swipe up is Mission Control. You can set shortcuts for those in the System Prefs. Desktops auto-arrange based on usage. You can disable that in the preferences. In MC, you can highlight a window and hit spacebar to bring it forward. I don't think the Desktop number displays anymore.
iView Media Pro appears to have been absorbed into the Collective. I can't see how the thing it has become is anything like what it was. Looks like a seek and destroy acquisition.
If it was a PowerPC only app, then it won't run under Lion. You could create an external Snow Leopard boot disk to run it off of.

  • IView Media Pro 2.x into Aperture

I consider to buy Aperture. However, my main issue/question is how to get my 40'000 pictures including all my keywords from iView Media Pro 2.6 (I think) into Aperture. I have used many of the given "Keywords" in iView like country, people, event but I also created some of my own.
Is there a way to get all that information into Aperture too? My hope is, that there are some plug-ins or Apple Scripts around. But so far I did not find anything. Or can Aperture read csv?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

PS: Where is the new MBP? ;-(

There is an Applescript called Annoture. I tried using it for some work last week and it seems to be broken with Leopard. Maybe a fix is coming soon, otherwise you could get a spare drive and install Tiger to run the script.

  • Import "People' from iView media pro

So the People category in iview does not exist in LR, or anywhere else it seems.
Is there a way to add it to LR's metadata so that my Iview cataloged photos will come over to LR with "people" intact. Or do I just move all the People into the keywords in iView and have them show up as keywords in LR?
    any help appreciated,
    John

It looks to me like iView Media Pro is using a custom XMP metadata field named 'People' with a registered custom XMP prefix of 'mediapro'.
This is all part of the normal XMP standard that Adobe was brilliant in creating.
Lightroom currently has no way to access and/or use Custom File Info Panels. I think this is the heart of the issue for you. Your images have the info but Lightroom currently cannot understand the info.
I would guess that in some future version of Lightroom the Adobe engineers will add the ability to use Custom File Info Panels and after that you should be able to access the mediapro:People custom XMP metadata field and values.
I just looked at the Custom File Info Panel that iView installed on my Mac years ago. It is where most Custom File Info Panels live in "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/XMP/Custom File Info Panels/iViewPanel V3.txt". This panel is how the field shows up in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Bridge CS3 also added Custom File Info Panel support but needs separate lines in the Custom File Info Panel to use them.
I've copy and pasted the code that defines the 'mediapro:People' custom XMP metadata field below.
    group(placement: place_row, spacing: gSpace, horizontal: align_fill, reverse: rtl_aware)
    static_text(
    name : '$$$/iView/MediaPro/Fieldname/People=&People: ',
    font : font_big_right,

    icon(
    builtin_icon : builtin_icon_alert,
    width : 20,
    height : 20,
    vertical : align_center );
    static_text(
name : '$$$/iView/MediaPro/Fieldname/Howto5=Catalog Sets, Custom Fields and People use semi-colons ";" as a seperator.',
    font : font_small,
    vertical : align_center,
    horizontal : align_left,
    label : false );
    mru_popup(
    xmp_ns_prefix : 'mediapro',
    xmp_namespace : 'http://ns.iview-multimedia.com/mediapro/1.0/',
    xmp_path : 'People',
    container_type : bag_struct,
    no_checks : true,
    mru_append : true,

  • I have a problem with my home butten, its working but when i press it, it seems like something is stuck in it. like sand or something like that, and this is the second time it happens to me with 2 devices. what can i do?

Ok so first sorry for my english, Im not American.
2 months ago i bought a new Iphone 4 device from my phone company, after a month something happened to the home butten, when i pressed it it felt like something stuck in it.. like sand or dirt.. but the home butten worked perfectly. so i went to the phone company and they told me that it is a problem and they replaced it with a new one. but after a week my iphone fell and something happened to him so i sold it to someone i know, and with that money i bought a new one from privet store (unlike the last time, when i bought my iphone in a big phone company) and in the begining it felt new, i didnt had any problems, but 2 days ago when i woke up i pressed the butten and i noticed that the problem with the home butten is back.. and i dont know what to do.. i mean like its not a big deal or something, it just that when i buy something new, i excpet it to be new, and i want to ejnoy it while its new.
so i went to some guy i know and he told me that he will see what he can do, i paid him 130 Shekels (35$) and he told my that he replaced the butten with new one, but still it makes problems. it bothers me alot, because i pay almost 300 shekels per month (75$) and i expect from this device to be new.. and its killing me.
now, i cant go to the phone company because thats not their device, and i know what the people in the privet store will tell me.. that its my fault and bla bla bla.. so what can i do? i cant spend any more money on this..
its new.. for some reason this always happenes to me.. 3 devices, problems problems and problems..

You are right, but how could i send it to Apple? when the phone company first replaced my iphone they had in stock alots of iphones and they just sent mine back to Apple and gave me a new one, so all i did is to give them my phone, but now how could i sent it to Apple? and i cant send it by myself, and the store wont do that, its a lost for them.. so sending it to Apple wasnt an option from the begining.
and for the record, i dont think the store where i bought it is an authorized shop.. its just a store who boughts phone's from Apple in a low price and sells it in much more money..

  • IPhoto '08 and iView Media Pro

Using Powermac G5 and just installed Leopard and iLife '08.
iPhoto '08 seems to have "grayed out" the iPhoto Library so that iView cannot access for cataloging.
I've got just under 25k photos in iPhoto, so don't really use the program but did want it up and running normally.
Anyone use iView and know how this might work?
My normal photo file system is subject based, and might just require me to go thru the iPhoto stuff and sort into this system.... if nothing can be done.
Thanks! I've learned a ton from this forums!

I suspect that something has changed since last August. When v7 first came out that alias trick worked, but I tried it myself again now and find that it doesn't anymore - I wonder if they closed the loophole somewhere along the way...
Old Toad, who's much younger than his name sounds (though not as young as me), is the most knowledgeable poster on here, and he actually uses iVMP as his primary organiser and only imports pics to iPhoto for particular projects - books etc. He may have some light to shine on the issue, but it seems very much to me that the only way you can do this is to run a referenced library, where the files are not copied to the iPhoto Library Folder on import.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
For my money, the only good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode is if you're using two photo organisers.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. Hold out and see what OT offers.

  • Importing iView Media Pro INFP keyword metadata into LR1

    Hi All
I have been tasked with testing LR1 for my employer. Currently, we have an iView [INFP] file containing hundreds of keywords. So far I have been unable to determine how to import (or convert and import) the INFP data into LR1. Does anyone out there know how to do this?
    Many thanks

Forgive me if I am oversimplifying things, but if you are talking about regular iView MediaPro keyword list (I don't know what INFP means), there is a script with instructions on the iView user forum that will let you export the keywords into an XML file. Open that list in Excel, save it as a *.TXT file and then import the list into LR. You can probably import XML directly, but I am not sure.
You can even create the hierarchies with the TXT file if you want to--all you need to do is to insert a tab for the next level of the hierarchy as in:
    Keyword 1
    Mother Level Keyword 2
    [Left TAB]Child Level Keyword 1
    [Left TAB]Child Level Keyword 2
    etc.
    Keyword 3
I am pretty sure child-level keywords are distinct from base-level keywords. So if you have keywordX embedded into a file and your hierarchy is Keyword1>KeywordX, Keyword X from the file will be added as a new Keyword Tag and you will have:
    Keyword1>KeywordX
    as well as
    KeywordX

  • IPhoto vs. iView Media

    Hello,
I have recently imported over 8000 photos from my work Mac (that used iView Media) over to my home Mac (that uses iLife '06/iPhoto 6). Wow, I may have made a really bad choice. iPhoto is seriously lacking in some major organizational features that I relied upon in iView Media. So, let me make sure with these questions:
    1. Is there a way to find the album(s) that a photo is attached to? I have random photos that I need to join with previously imported projects, but can find no easy way to find them.
    2. Is there a way to show all photos that are not associated to an album(s)? I have imported allot of photos first and then created albums for them, so I want to make sure that each photo is in an album somewhere.
    3. Is there a way to change the actual file name of the original photo at the Finder level? I see that I can manually change the name of a photo in iPhoto, but the original name at the Finder level remains the same. This could pose a huge problem as I have hundreds of 001.jpg files and could be devastating if I lost the iPhoto organizational links!
If iPhoto 6 is unable to do any of these tasks, then does anyone know if the upcoming iPhoto 7 (with iLife '07) will be able to? Otherwise, I am going to have no choice but to halt the frustration now and purchase iView Media Pro.
“Technological change is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.” (Albert Einstein, 1941),
    Dr. Z.

    Dr. Z:
I'm try to answer your questions.
    1 - No.
2 - Yes. Make a Smart Album whose criteria is "Album is not any". That will show you all albums not associated with another album.
3 - No. But if you need those files outside of iPhoto you can export them to the destination using the File->Export->File Export menu option and select the "Use Title" option. That will give you new files with that title as a file name.
As far as V7 is concerned we have no idea what direction the developers will take.
I use iVMP as my primary image management application and iPhoto to create books, calendars, cards, etc. What I've done is keep my iVMP organization and create an alias based library (uncheck the Copy files to library upon import checkbox in iPhoto's Advanced preference section) of those source files. Downside to that method is that whenever I add new files to the source files I have to manually import them into iPhoto. But I always add the new files to their own folder that's dated and has a brief description. I then import into iView, rename, keyword and annotate and then import that folder into iPhoto.
That way I have the best of both worlds with only one set of original/source files.. One caveat with this is if you do editing with iVMP iPhoto will see the edited version but the thumbnail will not recognize it. Also if you do any editing in iPhoto the edited version will not be recognized by iView as it will be a new file in iPhoto's Modified folder. So you can do lots of editing, cropping and not affect what iView sees. iPhoto has a good, automatic, rudimentary version control process. iView has version control also but has to be activated and actively engaged by the user.
You can rebuild the library's thumbnails and that will fix that. But you must not change the name of the file or the extension in the editing or iPhoto will not know it's been edited and still display the original.
I've written some Tutorials on the alias method and using iPhoto and iView that may give you some useful information.
If you're not in a big hurry you might hold off or a month, maybe two to see if V7 is released and what the improvements are. However, if you're considering buying iView MediaPro it will remain at it's current price until the Microsoft version of it is released and then the price will go up $100. If you have a licensed version now, you'll get a free upgrade to the full MS version later this spring.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?

  • Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Hi, yes preferences sees there is a second display it recognises what make of monitor it is etc but I just get a blank blue screen on the monitor when I change it to the hdmi setting! I have tried with mirroring on and off, rearranging the displays in the preference window and lots of different resolution settings but with no difference.
An old MacBook connects fine so the monitor and hdmi port must be okay. I'm sure we have used the cable before but it could have been with the previous MacBook Air. The current one I'm using is a mid 2011 version running lion and is (according to software update) all up to date.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!
