Why Lightroom cannot read Nikon Scanner's NEF?

I am trying to scan my old negatives with a nikon coolscan IV. There are optiions for saving the files in NEF raw file format or TIFF format. TIFF format works fine, but Nikon's NEF file format is not openable with Lightroom or Photoshop CS3 or CS2. I also have a Nikon D50 and NEF from the camera are imported and readable by Lightroom and Photoshop. Can anyone explain to me why this is the case, since both are NEF files. Is it the setting of the scan or something else? Is there a fixed for this?
Michael

Nikon's "scanner NEF" files contain EXACTLY the same image data is their TIFF files, just packaged differently in a way that is incompatible with normal TIFF readers such as Lightroom.
We will probably add support for these files in some future version, however this will only be so users don't have to convert these files to normal TIFF files using Nikon software. This future support would have absolutely ZERO quality advantage over just using TIFF in the first place.
In the meantime, just use TIFF with Nikon scanner software. Using "scanner NEF" is a waste of time, and is completely pointless.

Sorry to butt in. We used to double-shoot, too, but after a couple of years we discovered it was unnecessary when using both Aperture and Lightroom. Your workflow will be different from ours of course, and one does what one needs to do. We found the duplicate images were tedious and, even though they were quite small compared to the NEFs, they occupied a lot of space that was needlessly redundant. The Mac (or PC) is so instantly responsive that the NEF is offered up quickly so the jpg has no real purpose.

Thnx again for the reply.  The version of Lightroom I have is 4.0  (working w/Windows 7)  This computer and all media files are kept off-line After doing more research, I downloaded DNG Converter 7.1This loaded into a .zip folder, which I am planning to install into the off-line computer andrun.  Where does this folder go?
And will this set up work with my version of Lightroom?
What a pain.  Makes me wanna go back to shooting .nef files for all stills

  • I can't read Nikon D5200 Raw NEF files with CS6 under Windows 8.1?

I bought a new PC so I could use Photoshop CS6 more efficiently.  However, after I installed CS6, I can't read Nikon D5200 Raw NEF files under Windows 8.1.  I've tried updating CS6, but nothing seems to work.

First, I hadto load the most recent version of  the Adobe Application Manager.  Then I could see all of the CS6 Updates including the most recent Camera Raw update.
I had to run one update at a time for it to work correctly.
But now I'm cooking with gas.
    Thanks for your help.

  • I cannot read Nikon D600 raw files with CS5

I cannot read Nikon D600 raw files with CS5, I have tried Camera Raw 6.1 update but that has not worked.

Nikon D 600 will work with ACR 7.3 which needs minimum of PS CS 6  : http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
With PS CS 5, ACR 7.3 will not work.
So either you need to upgrade to CS 6 or use DNG converter to convert images to DNG format which you can open in CS 5

  • Lightroom doesn't read Nikon D700's nef files Help!

Anyone know a way to get Nikon's D700 nef files into Lightroom 2 ? The only way I can even get an image in there is to convert it to a tiff in Nikon's Capture NX2 and export it. Is Adobe going to provide an update for this any time soon? I have the Nikon NX2 program for a 60 day free trial. I really don't want to purchase or switch to it. Solutions anyone?
    (I have a PowerBook G4 with Mac OS X 10.4.)

I have a D700 & LR2 and all works fine (in that area that is...).
I did nothing extra, so I dont know what to say
Except Im on a macpro, but that shouldnt make a difference. Should it?
Latest Adobe Raw plug maybe? Good luck..sorry i cant help
(maybe you know this already, but its normal for now, that you dont see them on the desktop/in preview or anything like that, apple is not ready yet..)

  • Help Cannot Read any of my NEF (Nikon RAW) with iPhoto '08

I recently upgraded to iPhoto '08 and also to an Intel-based iMac (24in 2.8Ghz).
But now I cannot import, view or manipulate any of my old NEF (Nikon RAW format) pictures. Strangely, I also cannot view them in my Aperture. Previously, using PowerPC Mac, I had no problems viewing both.
Is this a compatibility issue with the Intel-based Macs? Is it an issue with the latest version of iPhoto?
Is this something I can solve, or will I need to convert all my NEF files to JPEG using Nikon software? Which I'd really rather not do since I have a vast number of them.
    Thank you so much.

    Joseph
RAW support is a function of the OS rather than iPhoto or Aperture. I would download and re-apply the 10.4.10 update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads.
Dont forget to repair permissions after.

  • Lightroom support for Nikon lossless-compressed NEFs

    Hi,
I shoot in NEF (12-bit, no compression) with a Nikon D200.
I then edit the files with Nikon Capture NX2, and, doing so, I save them as lossless compressed NEF.
I then finish editing in View NX2, where I further add geotagging and star rating.
I would like to import the NEF images straight into Lightroom 3.
My need is only to use the database and slideshow functions of Lr3; I understand and accept that, if I want to re-edit the image, I must use Capture again.
ONLY IN THE CASE I wanted to individually proceed editing in Lr3, I accept the need to extract the embedded jpeg and edit it in Lr3, ending up with two separate images.
In principle, I do not want to duplicate all my images saving them twice also as jpeg.
If I try now to import my lossless-compressed NEFs in Lr3.2, during import preview I can positively see the images, with editing applied. But after import, sometimes it shows an image composed solely by "noise", and sometimes it shows the image, but without any editing. If I open the individual image view, it always says "An error has occurred in elaboration of the image".
For testing, I also tried to save the edited image as NEF non-compressed and import it; I do not obtain the "noise" images any more, but the images are shown in the original version, without editing.
Only if I try to import the original images, it works.
I do not understand such a strange behaviour, since if I use a much simpler program like ExifPro v1.1.11, everything works fine and also the LL-c NEFs are correctly shown, with edits.
I also tried the NXTooey plugin by Rob Cole, but I end up duplicating my images as jpegs, and I do not want it (either I do not use it correctly?).
    Thanks for your help

Thank you for your prompt answers
    @ Lee
I can understand that the philosophy of Lr wants it to be a program for editing, and not merely for viewing - but, indeed, it is not ONLY an edit program (and for editing it has some features I like very much, and it is the reason why I would like to keep using it): it has also the database features, the slideshow, etc., so I cannot understand the intention to deliberately keep such a limitation: to me, such an option could be useful to many users, in many scenarios apart from editing.
The feature could be offered as an optional setting for the user (use internal render - use embedded jpeg), so it is an enlargement of the capabilities of the program, and not a limitation.
Moreover, in my understanding, it is not true that the edited raw images contain only the metadata relative to the editing infos: they certainly contain also an embedded jpeg (or tiff) of the edited image, ready to be extracted.
Infact, programs like ExifPro show the image at 100% quality (not a thumbnail) with editing applied, and they are extremely fast. It is not possible that they have the capability:
    1) to fully understand the proprietary matadata - part of them are not even disclosed out of Nikon
    2) to apply them on the fly, always and without any misunderstanding
    3) perform such an heavy elaboration 10 to 20 times faster than Capture or Lr
So,they instead certainly look into the file for an area where they know it is embedded the edited jpeg, ready and done.
And this could be easily done in the same way also by Lr with minimal effort.
Of course, I accept that, if I want to continue editing in Lr, (since it cannot understand the proprietary metadata), the embedded edited jpeg is extracted and saved, and from now on, I have two separate files that are no more in sincrony with editing.
    @ Rob
The firmware of the D200 unfortunately does not have the option to save in NEF Lossless-compressed: either you save in NEF NON-compressed (12-bit),
or you save in NEF LOSSY-compressed (apart from the options of saving in Jpeg)
And so I do not want to save in LOSSY since I would lose infos.
Yes I know that the more recent cameras have the option to save Lossless, and I would always use it indeed, if I had.
Given that, I agree with you for what you say in the second part of your answer.
But I would like to make the temptative anyway: I like very much Lr, it is a program full of options and opportunities (among them, the ability to edit
in a powerful and fast way - who knows if I will abandon Capture in the future and adopt LR for some editings, and for others no)
So: +1 vote: Lightroom option for persistent display of embedded jpeg (could it be offered as an option, or a flag to be checked in the settings??), and
    optional extraction for editing.
And I will submit the "noise" phenomenon as a bug - Now I only have to find how to do it...
    Thank you again

  • IPhoto 09 not reading Nikon raw files (.nef) properly?

Hey everyone. Over the weekend I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Everything seemed to be working correctly until I started using iPhoto. Since the upgrade, I've noticed that photos that I imported from a Nikon D700 seem to look pixelated. I took it to a Genius Bar and the dude helping me was at a loss. He said to try and re-install Snow Leopard, which I did, and that didn't help. I went back and he upgraded me to iPhoto 09...also didn't help. He said he thinks that maybe it's Snow Leopard/iPhoto bug. He said that it's not reading the raw files correctly and seeing them as thumbnails. We looked at the photo info of a random photo, and even though it was a large 10MB file (indicative of raw format) its pixels were 160x160. Weird. Also of note, both Photoshop and Lightroom view and display all photos correctly.
If anyone has any suggestions or solutions on how to fix this it'd be much appreciated!!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
We looked at the photo info of a random photo, and even though it was a large 10MB file (indicative of raw format) its pixels were 160x160.
That means that what you're seeing is the jpeg Preview inside the NEF and not the actual file.
My guess is that the your Camera Raw bundle is damaged.
    Go to
    HD / System / Library / Core Services / RawCamera.bundle
What version of this do you have?

  • Cannot open Nikon D5200 RAW (NEF) Files in Bridge CS5.

How do I sort this problem? Is there a bridge CS5 update for this camera? (I can't find one in Adobe Downloads)
    Dmecy

The D5200 was first supported in Camera Raw 7.3 (current version is 8.1)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
which was first supported in Bridge CS6
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
Camera Raw 7.x is not compatible with CS5 or lower versions. Only CS6+
    Your options:
Join the Adobe Cloud and get the latest versions of the software
Upgrade to CS6 (perpetual license) which is still on sale but is now abandonware since the all-new Cloud-only CC versions of Adobe software will be released on June 17. CS6 will remain on sale but won't be patched or updated other than the occasional bugfix.
Convert the D5200 Raw files to DNGs using the free DNG converter then open and edit the DNGs in CS5

  • Lightroom 4.4 cannot partly read Nikon Capture NX2 changes in NEF files

    Good Morning,
if I improve a NEF-File in capture NX2 and save it as a NEF-file and afterwards will import these files into LR, then the changes are available on the LR Importscreen (great), but during the import-process in LR the changes - embedded in the NEF-file - disappear, and I just see the original NEF-file before the changes. Looking to learn how to solve this problem.

Nikon Capture NX2 uses its own proprietory process to render the raw data and produce a viewable image file which Lightroom cannot use.
Lightroom has its own process and profiles developed for your camera model, it uses these to render the raw data and produces a viewable image file. The view you see on the import screen are the thumbnail jpeg's created by your camera which enable you to view the image on your camera's screen.
Adobe may have created aditional profiles for you camera to emulate the look of your camera, in the develop module these are located in the Camera Calibration and can be choosen there (Camera standard, camera landscape, camera portrait etc.). There are also tools for you to create your own profile and look for your camera if  you wish.

It’s a very new camera model but camera raw 8.6 updates are available as a release candidate (post beta) for CS6, Photoshop CC and Photoshop CC 2014. If you can’t wait for Lightroom compatibility you could convert your NEF files to Adobe Raw (DNG) using the stand alone release candidate converter.
