Why lock a hard drive?

When you are in a finder window and you selected "get info" on a hard drive, down at Ownership and Permissions there is a lock for the Hard Drive. What is this used for?

Hi, B.
See "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Setting permissions for disks, folders, and files" which mentions the specific lock you note in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel.
That lock is used in cases where you are not authorized to change the permissions on the specific object whose Get Info window is open. For example, the Home folder of another user. If you cannot make selections in the pop-up menus in the Details panel because they are unavailable or "greyed-out," clicking the lock and making changes would then prompt you for an Admin account and password on that Mac to authenticate the changes.
Good luck!

  • Why is my hard drive mostly backups?

    Why is my hard drive full of backups?
    Okay, my computer was running low on storage space, so I decided to clean it up. Now, my storage tab in "about this mac" looks like this:
    What happened? Is there a secret folder somewhere where I can delete all these backups? I have a 2009 macbook pro that has seen better days, and I am currently running on OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1. My computer doesn't run well after it has less than 100gb of free space left. Can someone please help? I would get another mac, but I don't have the money. Thanks to anyone who can help!

  • Why is my hard drive full when I only have the operating system loaded and nothing else?  No pics, music, nothing...It's the 60 Gig hard drive on the air built in late 2010.

    Why is my hard drive full when I'm only running the operating system and nothing else is loaded?  No music, pics, nothing! I understand the hard drive is small at 60 gig, but I can't believe the os would take up that much space.

    First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free on the startup volume for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root. Back up all data now. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
    I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

    Why is my hard drive requiring authentication before allowing me to drag documents to it?

    Why do you even think it needs defraginng, your iMac is not an old MS Windows machine?. Defragging HD's is a very antiquated and unneccessary thing to do. Even current MS Windows machines don't need it.

  • Why do new hard drives keep failing in Mac Mini OSX Server?

    Why new new hard drives keep failing in Mac Mini OSX server?

    If it only failed in 8 days.. I just return the drives back to newegg and get a different brand like western digital. NewEgg has a 30 day return policy.
    If you deal with any hard drive manufacturer now, they will give you a refurbished item and not a new item that you are entitled.
    As for testing  hardware....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
    even if it still passed Apple tests.. it does not mean logicboard is fine..... it just means it passes the tests.
    At this point, If i were you, I would just go back to NewEgg and send back the Seagates letting know they are bad and prefer a different brand such as Western Digital.
    Install the Western Digitals and see how long they last. If they fail again in a a short amoung of time, it's the logicboard then.
    This is based on experience in dealing with repairs with Macs, PCs, and other various kinds of Servers and computers over the last 10+ years.
    In fact, One of my clients who has a Dual 4-core Intel Xeon Server with a Supermicro logicboard, one of their SATA drive ports are bad. Every 4 months like clock work the Mirror RAID Drive would degrade on that port. Then after figuring out that the drives are not necessary bad, I swapped to using another spare  SATA port and since then no problems.

  • It appears windows hacker has locked my hard drive as readonly how can this be disabled?

    It appears windows hacker has locked my hard drive as readonly how can this be disabled?

    Sorry about the delay; I have called Apple Care sr advisors and spent 3 over 200 hrs explaining the problems to which they always recommend I exchange the Mac with a new one. This is my 5th Mac mini in less than 2 months. Many of the problems are not directly related to windows issues however (in my uneducated opinion should not be happening)Here are the unexplained issues:
    1. The sr advisors have been remotely connected to the machine and each one said I was setup on a server;
    2. My uid has been replaced with a windows uid (s-18-0-0-1 or sim);
    3. All the root certificates seem to be either fraudulent or modified to allow access to root account from remote locations;
    4. Apache server is active;
    5. WebDAV is configured as well as SQL services;
    6. Every newly exchanged Mac mini has iLife uninstalled prior to any updates being installed;
    7. Mac updates have warning messages indicating they are not signed properly, "contact software manufacture for more information", apple has no answer to this;
    8. Although I have never claimed (nor do I ever want to be computer program literate), I have been plagued by the same issues on Windows PC, Linux and now OS X. My main purpose for needing a secure computer is to write a resume and find employment. In 3 years I have been unable to do either. My data is always Either locked after as read only or is accessible on a URL only.
    9. I know this one will only classify me as an insane maniac but It appears as though I am connected to the Internet via an ipv6 udp connection even though my ISP doesn't support ip6 and all GUIs indicate all connections are inactive. This is typical no matter geographical location ie:Denver, San Deigo, Seattle, Boise et al)

  • Why is my hard drive running all the time in Mountain Lion

    My hard drive is powering up far more than it ever did with Lion, and this of course is killing battery power rapidly. Any one know why my hard drive runs so often on the new OS?
    Thanks!

    Great. Thanks. What I mean is my hard drive actually revs up and makes noise far more often than it ever did on Lion. It is actively engaged in a higher usage than ever before and this of course makes the battery quickly expire.
    Would anyone else like to offer advice? Thanks!

  • Why does external hard drive have to wake up?

    I understand that in Finder if I want to look at a file then it might have to wake up my external hard drive.
    Why is it the case that when I perform a seemingly unrelated action - such as bringing up a dialogue box in Photoshop, viewing developer tools in Chrome, or playing the next track of a file sitting on a folder on my desktop - forces the external drive to wake up, and forces me to wait until the wakeup whilst it does so?
    Yes, I want the drive to sleep as much as possible. It's only there for time machine backups which I rely on, and the less the drive is spinning the lower the chances are of the drive having an issue. So turning off "sleep when inactive" is NOT a solution.

    Not sure why but I had the same issue when I was using FW drives and ML.  Later I upgraded to Mavericks and changed over to USB3 drive with my new Mini and now no longer have that issue.  Must be something between the OS and the type of drive but not sure what the critical component is.

  • Items show "locked" in hard drive

    how do I "unlock" items in my hard drive?  I wonder if that is keeping me from deleting items (especially photos) on my hard drive?  My startup disk is full.

    If you have locked items in the Trash, you should be able to remove them by selecting "Remove All Items" when you Empty Trash.
    If that doesn't work, you can unlock files/folders by opening GetInfo and UNchecking the "Locked" selection for the file or folder.

  • Why is my hard drive disappearing?

    Hi all,
    For several months now, my hard drive space has been gradually shrinking at a steady clip and I have not been able to figure out why. I lose about 3-4gb per month and this has been occurring for a few months (at least that is how long ago that I first noticed it was happening). During this time I have not downloaded anything major--no music, no applications, no photos, no movies, nothing really. The only files that have been added are PDF's, Word docs, and Excel spreadsheets that I use for work. Nothing I've added even comes close to accounting for this persistent loss of disk space. For what it's worth, the applications I use 99% of the time are Word, Excel, Preview, Mail, Calendar, iTunes, Firefox, and Parallels.
    For the life of me I cannot figure out why this is happening. I've spent hours upon hours on these and other forums looking for a solution and so far nothing has worked. I've cleared out my caches and logs and that didn't help. I downloaded Whatsize to identify large files and I couldn't find anything. I've had a new hard drive installed (unrelated issue) and that didn't change anything. I've run AVG free virus scan on my Parallels VM (Windows XP Professional) and I've run ClamXav free virus scan on my Mac and neither identified any viruses.
    I've found countless answers on these forums in the past, but this is the first time I've ever been completely stumped. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?? Is there anything in the folders I can't access (ex. root) that might be chewing up space? Any chance Parallels or one of the applications I run on the VM is cranking out some massive log somewhere that I'm not aware of (I have Parallels running all day for work-related tasks)?
    Thank you in advance for any input. Also, thanks to all of you out there that take the time to read posts from people like me and offer your expert help. It is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Looks like it's going down a bit!?
    BTW, OSX can mark off a lot of space that doesn't show up anywhere to defrag big files.
    Might be an errant growing System file, not sure what you used to clear caches, but I think this one does it better...
    At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
    After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
    Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
    At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
    The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
    Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Why is my Hard drive info not displaying the correct availability

    I can open "About This MAC" and click on more info it lets me check my hard disk usage under storage. It shows I have 81 GB available of 499.76. However it shows 98 GB of Backups, what could that be?
    Now when I actually right click on Macintosh HD it says I have 437.22 GB available of 499.25 GB. I just don't understand, and I don't believe either is right. If I right click my user file in MAcintosh HD it says I have 165 GB on disc. What gives?

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    That's normal. OS X Lion and Mountain Lion, when you have turned on Time Machine, create "local snapshots" on the hard drive of portable Macs. See > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
    One of the "features" of local snapshots is that Disk Utility detects them as used space and Finder detects them as free space. That's the reason why you are seeing different free spaces depending on the application you use. There's nothing wrong in making local snapshots

  • Why is my hard drive randomly trashing unselected files?

    Hey all,
    I've noticed that everytime i plug in my hard drive, a selection of files end up in the trash, and these are files that i have not deleted. i made the mistake of emptying the trash and lost a whole lot of files from my hard drive.
    when i unplug the hd the files are no longer in the trash, but when i plug it back in the trash is full. this is a problem because the files i do delete to free up the space on my hd seem  to end up in the trash with files that i havent deleted at all, and the only way to free up space on my hd is to empty the trash. how can i resolve this problem of making sure only the files i delete are in the trash and not importrant unselected files?? Help!

  • Why is my hard drive split up like this?

    Ok so my hard drive is split up into five different parts. I have a 1 TB by the way. They are:
    the C: drive-902 GB
    Unallocated-28GB
    Hidden 400MB
    System 260MB
    Hidden 391MB
    Anyway can anyone tell me why its split up that way? Can I somehow allocate the 28Gb to the c drive? And what are the hidden drives?
    If you need more info let me know. I'm trying to learn as much about computers as possible because I want to work in IT someday and right now i just don't know what info is relevent. BTW I'm running windows 8 64 bit.
    Thanks!
