WHY MAC???

I have been a PC guy but am now looking at a new laptop and a friend had suggested a Mac. Every Apple person I know always raved about the product. So I have narrowed it down to two machines. The Dell XPS M1210 or the MacBook. I use my computer for work (office, acrobat, & internet) plus movies, photo's, and travel a lot with it. I don't play games.
After spending the better part of a day reading the posts on here I am wondering why buy a Mac. It seems that common problems for the MacBook are;
- random shutdowns/reboots,
- numerous battery issues,
- CD's/DVD's not playing and/or being scratched by the drive,
- CD's/DVD's getting stuck in the drive,
- The proclaimed ability to run windows does not seem to be as flawless as portrayed
- Several websites not being able to be opened,
- But the one that got me is the numerous complaints about Apple service, with common replies of "impact damage" or "software problems not coverd by AppleCare" and requiring moeny to fix.
From what I have read it does not live up to the reputation of Apple being a superior integrated product with fantastic support. In other words not much different from PC.
So I ask everyone out there, because I was quite keen to switch to Mac, why buy a Mac?? How is better than a PC??
Thanks,

Well I guess I understand your point.... But think about this when you go to a hospital all you see is people who are sick or having problems with a health concern in their life. When you come to the discussion all you will have is people with problems trying to get them solved. Nobody comes in here to chat about how great their laptop is, they come here to share common problems. I have been a Windows user all my life. I never had any interest for macs until recently we put my HP Pavilion to the test versus a Ibook Pro. We did 3 hours of audio recording. I was so asahmed of my HP because it froze 6 times in 3 hours and when we put the ibook it did everything perfect. The next day I sold it and just a week ago I got my mac, infact im on it right now. This machine is absolutely amazing. The widescreen feature is mind boggling! Its a bright little screen that blows your mind. I got the mac with the 2.0 ghz Intel Core Duo processor and with the basic 512 mb ram. THIS THING IS QUICK!! It came with the DVD burner superdrive and its great. The OS X is real simple and very effective for what ever you neeed it. I thought I would take longer than a week to learn this system, but I already got it down. Other things like the bluetooth, allows you to transfer info between computers or cell phones without any wires. Battery timE! WOOO HOOO! Easy 5 hours on doing basic stuff and about 3 hours and 30 minutes playing a dvd or doing many things at once. I can have 15 pages of Safari(Internet Browser) open and the laptop will still be as fast as when they were closed. Ever heard of no virus, no spyware, no pop-ups? LOL i did not believe it either but now I get to surf the internet pop-up free with no risk of viruses or spyware attaching to my computer. You like to travel right. This computer has a very sleek design and is very light 5.? pounds. Pictures? The macbook has a built in camera called Isight it takes incredible pictures and also it is great for video chatting or video conferencing it comes with software for picture editing(cant think of te name) I thik its Iphoto. Ill tell you one thing about changing to a new system(you will expereince this). When you change to a new system for example from windows to mac. When something you dont have the knowledge of goes wrong, people have the tendency of blaming the machine immediatley without any doubts. This happened to me. This is my first mac ever and when the internet was not working properly, I immediatley blamed the mac for it, without realizing that my router was the one messing up. I bought office 2004 for mac and it is completely different to the windows software it is more stylish and better designed. Of course if you have problems adapting to mac, Mac offers a software called parallels for mac. This program allows you to run and install windows on your mac and run it parralel to OSX. Of course when you use windows you get all them dirty things on the internet that mess up your computer. This has been the best investment in my whole life. I am going to stick to mac until I die. LOL. Take it into consideration that im a college student studying to become a physical therapist. So I have to have a machine that I can rely on and that it will not fail me. Regrets? NO WAY! There is no such thing as perfect techonolgy in this world. But I can tell you that the Macbook comes real close to it.Anything you purchase in this world can come defective there is no guarantee on anything. But to me its the MAC OSX that makes this machine stand out. The security, the simplicty. The mac is very user friendly. I give it two thumbs up and recommend it to all!
I hope this Helps GLI77
If there is anything else I can help you with. Please let me know!

Why Mac App Store cannot resume broken transfer?
Everyday I start download of xcode, at the end of day it archived several hundred MBs, but the next day the download start from 0 again, it took me two weeks and I'm still trapped in this!

Quit the App Store if it's open.
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General
Click the lock icon bottom left corner of the pane. You may be prompted for your admin password.
Select:  Mac App Store and identified developers
Click the lock icon to prevent further changes.
Relaunch the App Store. From the App Store menu bar (top of your screen) click Store > Check for Unfinished Downnloads or follow the insstructions here >  Mac App Store: How to resume interrupted downloads
If you still have problems ...
    -  Temporarily disable anti virus software if installed
    -  Apps such as Little Snitch, Net Nanny, and Hands Off can prevent apps from downloading
    -  Third party download managers are not compatible with the App Store.

Why Mac crashes when I run the clean speech ring of osx and then run the RestoreTime Machine? Could it be that I run restore the setup from a usb drive. I've done thisbefore and when it has not been a problem.
Does anyone have a good answer on this so I'm happy.

    What is that?
    run the RestoreTime Machine?
    What are you restoring?
Do you mean a full system restore?  Or something else?
When does your Mac crash -- during the restore, when you try to start up afterwards, or ?

  • Why Mac pro is better & more expensive than IMac?!

can you advice me on this:
tell me which one is more practical and powerful for 3D rendering and animation?!  why?!
and why Mac pro is more expensive than IMac?! even though numbers in IMac are higher than Mac pro.......
    IMac:
              - 27-inch
              - 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
              - 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
              - 2TB Serial ATA Drive
              - AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
    or
    Mac pro:
Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (12 cores)
    12GB (6X2GB)
    2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB
    One 18x SuperDrive

Apparently you don't fathom or realize what I said:
Better value: Mac Pro 6-core 3.33GHz. You can buy base and throw in W3680.
You can buy a single 6-core like that from Apple and pay $900 more.
    I do not recommend 12-core.
I do not recommend the slower 2.66 processor
I do recommend avoiding the 2009 model.
Better off starting with the 2.8 4-core and go from there.
Ivy Bridge socket LGA2011 will have a lot of other features making them the "to die for" but no one knows and I for one would not want to be on cutting edge with any chipset or new revision. Seriously, Apple has always had issues with first silicon whether 2011 MBP or iMac or 2008/2009 Mac Pro. And always takes a couple OS updates. And then things break. And then software has to catch up.
A slower 12-core is not going to future proof. It is going to cost more and not deliver.
For last year we've all been seeing and saying 6 x 3.33.

It's not Mac, it is iTunes, especially the recent version.
Every week you can see about 10 posts on iPod missing songs after ejecting from iTunes.
Well maybe Apple is telling iPod users, to buy their latest innovation like iPad 2.

If it's the Yahoo Messenger app that doesn't work for you, then consider downloading and using the Adium app.
The Adium UI is somewhat cryptic, but the tool does work with Yahoo IM and a whole bunch of other ways that are commonly used to chat.
But yes, more details on the errors or problems or dialog boxes or messages are needed, if there's something going wrong with Yahoo Messenger app.

  • HT1199 Why Macs have low Graphic Card specs?

I don't know why Macs have very low graphic card such as Intel Graphics! It's not worth it to spend $1500 to buy a Macbook Pro. I only can play such an crappy old games like GTA San Andreas, GTA 3, etc. But why I can't play GTA 4, Battlefield 4, or other hardcore games? When I play it on bootcamp, the game is even more laggy and almost unplayable!

Not all Macs have that.  I suggest going through the Mac lineup and reading it carefully:
    http://www.everymac.com/
No one here works for Apple, nor can question their policies or decisions to build machines as they have.

  • Why mac pro 2013 not supporting illustrator GPU rendering

Here, all nvidia cards supporting this:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/gpu-performance-preview-improvements.html
now I'm thinking, that buying the new mac pro 2013 maybe wasn't the best idea... Apple put in AMD GPu's, that is fine by me, but come on, give us some more support for them! Normal windows PC (for 800€) with nvidia GPU is faster at rendering in Illustrator, than my workstation mac (3500+€)! Really? O.o
And story doesn't end here. I was reading one article about GPU usage in this new mac pro and then I tested it myself. Only one GPU is used and the other is barely touched! And this goes for Maya, photoshop, illustrator and other adobe programs. I was shocked, that I discovered I have one GPU to warm up my room and only one actually doing all the work.
Ok I understand, that also software developers needs to support stuff and write their software to actually use GPU's, but adobe creative suite is one of examples, where software is actually capable of using GPU via openCL and in some cases even CUDA from nvidia.
And there is one more thing: new mac pro, has 2 identical AMD GPU's inside, which can work in crossfire configuration under windows in bootcamp, but not in OS X. Sometimes I even play some games on my mac and sometimes I'm testing them (I'm artist, but I also like to develop and test some games in my free time) and it's kinda a shame, that I can run games with better performance under windows in bootcamp.
When I bought this computer I thought this is going to rock and sweep up with all my previous machines. Well in practice it is much of unused potential and great room warmer. It's kinda sad, that on my girlfriend's PC I can play games with better frames and details on GF 660GTX than on my mac pro... I know I know, mac's aren't for gaming, but hey, sometimes it is good to get my mind on rest and blow up some enemies!
I'm not saying mac pro isn't great product, which is (very great). But support to use all computer capabilities is very limited and Apple should kick developers in their back side and push them to start developing things to use GPU's more.
I'm also not expecting Apple to jump on their feet and fix problems overnight. No, just start thinking of adding more support and things that would make our computers much more used and not only good decoration on desk. First would be a good steep adding crossfire support to OS X. That might even help at rendering some 3D scenes?
Next step would probably be better cooperation with software developers, like Adobe , Autodesk,... If adobe made good support for GPU rendering in Illustrator, aim that we get that support soon as well. I'm sometimes having a lot of paths and objects and rendering goes pretty slow then.
I'm also thinking about that AMD choice Apple made wasn't so good when you see that Nvidia puts much more effort into supporting more and more stuff, while AMD is sitting idle not even updating their drivers anymore.
Oh and one more thing: Can we please, please, please, please, preeeeeetty please get 10-bit output support on OS X? It's kinda sad, having good mac workstation with 10-bit capable monitor (dell UP2414Q) and no support for it, while other PC workstations all support it... Photoshop is working much better on OS X and here I have much better integration and everything and I really love working in Photoshop running on OS X, but some basic things are missing and I'm really asking myself sometimes: was that good decision? Photoshop was first written for macs and in 2014 there is much better support for adobe software on windows than on OS X. Where went wrong?
Don't take me wrong and think I'm just ranting here without any good reason, but think: buying very expensive computer that is supposed to make creative work easy and painless is actually just on paper. In reality computer potential is pretty much unused and that makes me thinking if I would be much better buying iMac instead of mac pro...
TL;DR: I wish for some more support from Apple for their new expensive mac pro's 2013. They are great piece of equipment, but equivalent PC's running windows are surpassing them in this department, specially when GPU's are involved. Now I would like to point this out to Apple, so I don't know where to write so they will read so I first wrote that here. I hope someone from Apple reads this and give us some feedback on those missing things or maybe I get direction where to write to Apple so I get maybe some response from them(?):
-not enough GPU support for creative software (adobe suite, autodesk,...) - nvidia + windows offering much more for less money?
-no crossfire support on OS X. Any particular reason for that?
-no 10-bit support for 10-bit displays. Why not? Hardware is capable, why software isn't?
-lack of openCL software out there. Apple isn't doing much to get more support or developers just too lazy to put more effort into this? GPGPU isn't the future as some companies are trying to convince us?

    Grant Bennet-Alder wrote:
All displays are supported by one GPU -- the display GPU. The second GPU is reserved for un-interrupted GPU computing and has no Display output Hardware.
Anandtech has a discussion of this in his review of the late 2013 Mac Pro.
Under OS X the situation is a bit more complicated. There is no system-wide CrossFire X equivalent that will automatically split up rendering tasks across both GPUs.
By default, one GPU is setup for display duties while the other is used exclusively for GPU compute workloads. GPUs are notoriously bad at context switching, which can severely limit compute performance if the GPU also has to deal with the rendering workloads associated with display in a modern OS. NVIDIA sought to address a similar problem with their Maximus technology, combining Quadro and Tesla cards into a single system for display and compute.
    from section 9:
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/7603/mac-pro-review-late-2013/9
Another problem here: on windows bootcamp crossfire IS working, but not in OS X. As I wrote, sometimes it would be better to get more rendering power than computing power (actually at current state of GPU computing software, computing GPU isn't working very much if at all). It would be nice to have an option to switch on and off crossfire so we could use more rendering power when needed.
Also not all people are doing video rendering on their computers. What about 3D modelling and 2D work in photosohp? And maybe people like me are occasionally wish to play some games on their mac?
You linked me GPU usage from one program (probably adobe after effects or premiere pro or apple final cut X?), that is probably one of the only pieces of software that actually uses both GPU's under OS X. I made same experiment with software I use and I even tested some software I don't use but it is advertised it is "optimized" for mac pro like pixelmator.
And guess what? Second GPU is 99% time idle. Even when some stuff is using openCL in Photoshop, stuff is still computed on rendering GPU and not on computing one, which makes computing GPU just a good room warmer as I wrote before. Wouldn't be better to at least use second GPU for something than heating air?

That does not sound correct.  Lion comes with 7 Arabic fonts supported by Apple apps:  Al Bayan, Baghdad, Damascus, Deco Type Naskh, Geeza Pro, Kufi Standard, Nadeem.  Plus a few others which should also work in TextEdit.
What apps are you trying to use?  MS Word for Mac has never supported Arabic.  Instead of that you should use Mellel, TextEdit, Nisus Writer, or OpenOffice.  For Adobe apps for best results you should use the special ME Version designed for RTL scripts.

  • Why Mac's are not prone to viruses

I have ALWAYS had a mac dating back to the old Macintosh II and dread whenever I HAVE TO use a windows. Many of my friends and employees are windows fans and I have found myself defending mac's when I do not know the facts. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could educate me on this topic.

I can't believe I'm having to do this (defend Microsoft a little here), but the reality is that Windows has a lot more unknowns to deal with than does Apple. Apple has a distinct advantage in controlling both hardware and software. It is also using an OS that is based on a form of UNIX that has proven fairly stable through decades of international use, fixes and debugging.
So, to say that Windows is less secure is a bit naive. It has many, many more attackers to deal with. In fact, at the last "hackers" symposium, it was shown that Safari was the least secure browser and the first to fall.
The only problem is that the way in which these competitions are setup are inherently in favor of systems like Microsoft. If you give anybody admin rights to login to a system and setup an application to control it remotely you're going to find people that can perform this feat. The real issue is what is the likelihood of that happening? It is like leaving a car with the doors open in the middle of the street saying "try to steal this" and leaving a screw-driver and wire cutters on the driver's seat.
The whole point about OS X is that they make great efforts to keep the identity of the car invisible to begin with... it is like it is in a closed garage, locked, security system activated and lo-jack to boot. Maybe not the most secured, but why bother trying if there are plenty of easier targets?
If you can explain it like that to someone in your family, they may understand it conceptually. It really has little to do with how many systems are out there. Apple just has a much better (imho) way of addressing the issue than does Microsoft. I've been proudly using Macs since 2001 and have NEVER had one virus, trojan horse, or anything of that nature on any of my systems.
But the biggest benefit of all (if you're looking to convince your family of the benefits of a Mac) is very simple; after all is said and done, Apple saves you time. They don't "avoid" problems by bringing out new products every week (i.e. see cell phone manufacturers). They provide a product and continue to refine it long after you've purchased it. The issue isn't viruses/trojans, etc., it is all the time wasted talking/writing about it and fixing/dealing with it that you save... (like reading this long post for instance...)
    Have fun!

I suggest you download from the Internet iStat pro (free) and install it.  It will show you all of the temperatures being produced inside your MBP.  When you have that data, post it with the applications you are using.  With that data a judgement can be made if you indeed have a heating issue or not.
