Why Mail on Mavericks keeps Writing changes to disc all the time?
I have updated my MacBook Pro (early 2011) to Mavericks and now my IMAP Gmail account on Mail is having a huge endless "Writing changes to disc" on +/- sometimes with up to 50.000 messages, almost freezing my computer all the time! My Inbox, only has aprox 50 messages, I always move mesages to other folders!
Everything just worked fine on Mountain Lion and now my Mac is very slow because of this. Only if I close Mail than I have my Mac back... but I need to work with Mail open, so thats not an option.
I have the same problem. Since installing Mavericks I have a major issue with Apple Mail drastically slowing my whole system down. As others have mentioned, basically Mail takes over the computer and I find myself looking at spinning beach balls for minutes at a time.
From watching the Mail "Activity Window" (accessible from the "Window" menu item), I have discovered that several times a day it starts "Writing changes to disk" (see screenshot) for no apparent reason (it's not as if I have shifted any mailboxes); and that's the time when everything comes to a shuddering halt. It takes a long time, about half an hour or so, to rewrite 27,000 messages (or some other ginormous number, it varies) to disk, and during that time I'm held up. This problem never arose with Mountain Lion.
Basically it seems to me that Mail has been messed up in Mavericks, and Apple needs to fix it.
It was suggested to me by the Apple "Support Advisor" that the fault may lie with Gmail, due to some changes Google have made. But that sounds like it's a cop-out and anyway it's no excuse. Here are two of the biggest companies in the world who are constantly talking with each other about many things. If it's true (unlikely) Apple should be able to communicate with Gmail and get it sorted.

Why is Firefox writing so much data all the time?
I am running Windows 7 x64 and Firefox 8. In my Task Manager I display the I/O Write Bytes of all processes. I have found that Firefox is ALWAYS the Process with the largest amount of write bytes after it has been running an hour or so even though there are dozens of other processes there. The only Web page is Google and all of my plugins are disabled.
Why is Firefox writing so much data all the time?Firefox may be updating the phishing protection database or do maintenance with other files like places.sqlite. It should stop at some point if that has been done.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem.

I have Elements 11. Sometimes, if I edit a photo in Elements Editor, the date gets changed to the current date. Why does that happen? It doesn't happen all the time, so I can't isolate the cause. Any ideas?

HT1688 why are my imessages now turning into text messages all the time?
Why are my iMessages now turning into text messages all the time?
There are a number of reasons why they may be sent as regular sms and not iMessages. If either party is in an area with poor reception and the the data network is struggling, the regular sms messages will be sent to the recipient. iMessage can be switched off at a users convienince, your recipients may have iMessage turned off when you've sent those messages.
There are instances where the iMessage server is not responding due to techinical issues (although, few and far between) -
Why Lightroom keeps using 30% CPU power all the time?
Hello all,
I am relatively new to LIghtRoom.
I started working on a new set of photos (400 app.). I opened it as new directory.
Since then, all the time I work on theses pictures Lightroom keeps using app. 30% of CPU time.
The over all time I spent on these photos is estimated to be more then 30 hours (yes, I am slow and open each in Photoshop while Lightroom is still opened). So I guess Lightroom finished all the rendering it wished to do.
My question is why and what it keeps calculating and is there a way to stop it?
System configuration:
Single core Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 3.6 GHz (Hyper Threading allowed)
2 GB RAM
NVidia 6600 based graphics card (256 MB)
Both LightRoom 2.3 and PhotoShop CS4 are opened
Please help - the system is slow anyway. It can realy use those extra CPU power.

But I get a warning that changes I made to pictures in LR might not be
visible in other applications. Dose this mean that when I send the picture
to PhotoShop, or open the raw file later with bridge, all the editing inside
LR will not show?
The warning badge can be switched off from within View Options panel (Library module View menu) by unchecking the option labelled Unsaved Metadata.
With regard to your question as to whether Lr edits will show in Photoshop and Bridge/ACR - you'll be fine with Photoshop. However, for Lr edits to be visible in Bridge/ACR you will now have to manually save the metadata to each file (i.e. select file(s) then hit Cmd/Ctrl+S to save metadata to file). -
I bought a new Apple I bought a Mac Pro Retina screen, since I got it keeps crashing ALL the time!!! This is my first Mac computer and I am hating it!!! I assume I can take down to the any store and they will replace it??
I have a similar problem, my MBP Retina 15" 6 weeks old crashes and locks-up all the time with just about every application. I now have gone back to using my old MS XP system, it is much more stable than Mountain Lion OS and Apple hardware. I use Window-7 at work for last 6 months, not a single crash and/or lock-up. I'm looking at returning/selling my MBP and getting a Window-8 system, Apple is now building crap hardware and software. I recommend you consider the same solution. Good Luck !

Keeping external docking stations connected all the time?
I would like to connect a couple hard drive docking stations to a new iMac so I can easily swap out different bare hard drives. Are there any issues or reasons to not keep two docking stations connected via FW or TB connected all the time?
Thanks.Should be no problem, just remember to Eject the Disks in the Finder before removing from the Dock.

Can I keep my iMac running at all the times?
I have iMac, early 2009 version and in good condition. I would like to know, whether I can keep the machine ON at all the times ( 7 * 24hrs) or should I switch it off every night? So far, I am switching it off every night and switch it on the next morning. Please clarify me.
In talking with a tech guy at Applecare, I was told to shut the iMac down--all the way down--every so often. I'd been using "sleep" for months and months, but this chap said the processor is running at about 10% capacity in sleep mode. It was then accumulating signals, loading up the RAM, and slowing down the computer. If you shut down the computer from time to time--stopping the processor completely--the accumulated "noise" is erased, and the computer will run faster as a result.
I've used a lot of vague language here. I'm not sure exactly what happens when you use sleep mode for extended periods, but in following the tech's advice, my mac is running fast and smoothly.
So I'd say, DON'T keep your machine running forever.
FWIW.

Why do I have to "renew Touch ID purchases" all the time?
Why do I have to enter my Apple ID password when updating apps?
If I make new purchases, it seems to go thru with touch ID most of the time, however if I update an app I am forced to manually enter my password.
I have the 7.0.1 update and apple store purchases under the general->fingerprint section is turned on.
I have searched here and the common theme is do the update. It's not that.
So short question is, why do I have to "Confirm Apple ID password for <insert my Apple ID> to renew Touch ID purchases"?Gortiz97 wrote:
I toggled the App Store switch off and now it's grayed out and I can't turn it back on I'm not sure what to do.
Go to "Settings - iTunes and App Store", and make sure you're logged in correctly there, and if you're not on wifi, make sure to have the "Use Cellular Data" toggled on. Now, go back to Fingerprint and try to toggle the "iTunes and App Store" back on.
If this doesn't work, try logging into your iTunes account from a computer. You may be having problems with your Apple ID or iTunes account, which is a bigger problems than what you've just discovered here. An Apple chat is a quicker way to get in touch with Apple. -
How do I stop firefox from changing my language all the time?
It keeps resetting my spellcheck to US English. I have to manually change it in the right click context menu of multi-line text boxes, every time.
You can check for problems with preferences and try to rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js files and a possible user.js file to reset all prefs to the default values.
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resetting_preferences
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
You can consider to reset Firefox.
If you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some of your data (bookmarks, passwords, cookies, form data) is automatically imported and your current profile will be moved to the desktop (Old Firefox Data).
You can recover more data from the old profile (be cautious with doing that).

Upgraded to Mavericks 10.9, running very slow all the time
I know this has been asked many times, and I've read through many threads, but I have never seen a definitive answer or anything approaching an official response from Apple.
I upgraded my Macbook Pro from 10.6.8 to 10.9 several weeks after it was released. I immediately noticed that response times for pretty much everything got really bad. I started getting the "beach balls" popping up frequently, and it became painful to use my computer. I am upgraded now to 10.9.2 and no improvement. In fact, it might be even worse. It's inconsistent - sometimes it's just a little slow, and sometimes it's so painfully bad that it's too frustrating to use my expensive laptop.
Don't tell me anything about Spotlight building an index or checking Activity Monitor. My upgrade was done months ago - the index is done. And I checked Activity Monitor, and saw nothing unusual. It claimed I had in the neighborhood of 93% available CPU and half my memory available.
Computer details:

Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
Software: OS X 10.9.2Thanks, Eric - I had read many of those links before, but they mainly talk about things like memory usage, CPU usage or hard disk problems. My CPU and memory usage aren't an issue, and this problem only began after the upgrade to Mavericks, so I doubt that disk problems are the cause.
Here's the Etrecheck output. Thanks for any help you (or anyone else) can provide.

Why is AppleTV showing a popup menu about AirPlay all the time?
I am experiencing a problem with AppleTV that I never had before:
It is a black popup message that keeps poping up on my TV during my Slide Show.
It says:
AirPlay
Wirelessly send what's on your iOS device or computer to this display using AirPlay. To learn more, go to apple.com/airplay
Then it displays an instruction to Choose Wi-Fi Network and Choose This AppleTV
Does anyone know what it is all about and how I could fix it? I never had this problem before and I really need help because I want to play this slideshow on my TV during a party tonight.
Any tip will be mostly welcomed! This is not a fix, this is an annoyance. I want both features! And I don't want to have to go into the settings menu to change between the two! I didn't have to do this before, and I don't want to do it now. Sometimes I use the mirror features, and sometimes I want to see my slideshow with pictures. Fix this apple!

I've encountered at least 3 apps (iTunes - when opening iTunes store, Mail - on startup, Software Update - on Pressing the View Details button) that crashes with the same stack trace (Webkit & Webcore) appearing in Thread 0. I'm not sure what changed in the system recently but I did activate a few iCloud features such as find my iPhone.

Is it necessary to keep the external drive plugged in at all times? Or can I unplug it and choose when I wish to back up my system.
No, I do not believe so. Time Machine would keep all those now-deleted files in previous backups, and as time goes by those backups might be deleted if you needed room, but it would still keep one backup from each day in last month, as well as one from each week forever, as long as you don't start running out of room, then just the oldest would be deleted to make room if needed.
I use a backup drive about double the size of my drive to be backed up, so I would guess it will never get to the point where deleted files being replaced by new ones being backed fill up that drive to the point where backups actually have to get deleted.

My company receives a lot of drawings in PDF format. They look great, but when we're asked to modify these drawings, they have to be redrawn in CAD. This is very time-consuming and costly. I would like to use Illustrator to convert these PDFs to DWG
