Why Microsoft Loopback Adapter in SAP Installation ?

Hello Gurus
Please Tell Me The Concept of Microsoft Loopback Adapter ?
Why we are using this when we install SAP ?
Please Suggest Any Hyperlink Or Document Where we are going to Get The Information on This
Thank You

Hi Srinivas,
If loopback adapter is not installed on your system then it not able to go inside the \\<hostname>\sapmnt or saploc directory.
Moreover SAP engine requires a LAN adapter to function properly and since sapmnt is shared folder it will get accessed while network is available.

I have Windows XP professional SP2 with a static ip address of my internal lan.
The installation don't pass the check about lan with the same message as you
"DHCP configuration detected , you need to configure ur primary loopback adapter to MICROSOFT LOOPBACK ADAPTER". Why?
I followed the instructions and now is all working adding in the hosts file 2 lines and not only one:

  • Microsoft Loopback Adapter ping failed

I have a laptop and a desktop both running XP Pro SP2. I followed the instructions to install Microsoft Loopback adapter as part of the Oracle installation.
On the desktop, I successfully installed Microsoft Loopback adapter. I was able to ping the IP and host name of the loopback adapter and everything works fine.
On the laptop, I installed the Microsoft Loopback adapter. I cannot ping the Microsoft loopback adapter's host or IP. I can ping localhost and external internet hosts/IP.
    Any ideas?

    Madrid,
Thank you very much for your help. On my laptop, I have Norton Internet Security (NIS) and there was a firewall rule blocking the traffic.
    This problem is now resolved.
    Thanks for your help, Madrid.

  • How to configue "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" ?

    Hi,
I have Oracle 11GR1,Win XP. with DHCP enabled.
My conputer gets dynamic IP on connection to internet, so i want to install "*Microsoft Loopback Adapter*".
For that i visited this link:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B1930601/install.102/b14316/reqs.htm#BABGHEFB_
There, in section 2.4.5.3, Installing a Loopback Adapter on Windows 2003 or Windows XP,
step 20,they said to edit host file.
In this step i have some confusion:
    >For example:
    >10.10.10.10 mycomputer.mydomain.com mycomputer
What to write in above line in place of mydomain.com ?In above example mycomputer is the computer name.In my case
    my computer name is user-5ef511de5
    so , i wrote
    10.10.10.10 user-5ef511de5 user-5ef511de5
This gave unexpected behaviour. That i was unable to connect on DB through any tool.
Please tell what exactly to write in that host file ?
My computer in standalone computer that frequently gets connected to internet via dial up connection.

  • About the microsoft loopback adapter settings

In the minisap setup process, when I use the recommended loopback setting and change the ip to 10.10.0.10 and also change the host file.
But If I do this , it's really slow for my minisap to run~~~
So I just change the ip to local host (127.0.0.1)again, then the minisap run much faster?
Would anyone give me some sugestions about how this happened?

    hi mahis,
my question is that why oracle need microsoft loopback adapterIts a pre-requisite for OBIEE 11g to call the IP of the host file.It is defined that way,you can go through the documentation for it.

  • Why do i need the Microsoft Loopback Adaptor on XP

I just received a new PC running XP pro at work. This new PC replaced my old PC running win 2k. I installed XE as a domain user and it installed and ran without any issues. Now i try to install XE on XP pro and the listener will not start for port 8080 or any other port. Why would this new PC have this problem? Both PCs are configured to use DHCP.
    Thanks,
    Christopher

    Hi
Please have a look into the following to understand Loopback Adapter and DHCP:
    What is a Loopback Adapter?
The Microsoft Loopback adapter is a testing tool for a virtual network environment where network access is not available. Also, you must use the Loopback adapter if there are conflicts with a network adapter or with a network adapter driver. You can bind network clients, protocols, and other network configuration items to the Loopback adapter, and you can install the network adapter driver or network adapter later while retaining the network configuration information. The Loopback adapter is a useful tool for testing the configuration of network protocols such as TCP/IP on a local system when you don't have a network card.
DHCP is a protocol used by networked computers (clients) to obtain IP addresses and other parameters such as the default gateway, subnet mask, and IP addresses of DNS servers from a DHCP server. It facilitates access to a network because these settings would otherwise have to be made manually for the client to participate in the network.
The DHCP server ensures that all IP addresses are unique, that is, no IP address is assigned to a second client while the first client's assignment is valid (its lease has not expired). Thus IP address pool management is done by the server
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) automates the assignment of IP addresses, subnet masks, default gateway, and other IP parameters. The assignment occurs when the DHCP-configured machine boots up or regains connectivity to the network. The DHCP client sends out a query requesting a response from a DHCP server on the locally attached network. The query is typically initiated immediately after booting up and before the client initiates any IP based communication with other hosts. The DHCP server then replies to the client with its assigned IP address, subnet mask, DNS server and default gateway information.
The assignment of the IP address generally expires after a predetermined period of time, at which point the DHCP client and server renegotiate a new IP address from the server's predefined pool of addresses. Typical intervals range from one hour to several months, and can, if desired, be set to infinite (never expire). The length of time the address is available to the device it was assigned to is called a lease, and is determined by the server.
DHCP is intended for client PCs, not servers. It also suggests when DHCP is suitable: when there are lots of client machines to be configured So if you work in the server room of a corporation, you may well think that you have a large number of servers which need IP addresses to be allocated... but generally, for most corporate networks, the number of servers will be relatively small. And they also tend to all be physically co-located in one, large, rather chilly, server room. There is therefore no need for servers to have dynamically-assigned IP addresses.
One more way to understand DHCP: DHCP is a protocol that lets network administrators centrally manage and automate the assignment of IP Addresses on the corporate network. When a company sets up its computer users with a connection to the Internet, an IP address must be assigned to each machine. Without DHCP, the IP address must be entered manually at each computer .
The key features of DHCP are listed as central management of IP addresses.

  • Loopback adapter not working - can't install Oracle.

I'm attempting to install 10g on a Win XP box that is not connected to a network. Installation instructions dictate to install the MS loopback adapter before database installation. I installed it, but I can't get the loopback adapter to work. It can't find itself with ping and the 10g software won't install without it.
I'm up for a big job using Oracle and I want to upgrade my skills before I interview. This is very important to me. This may sound a bit corny, but I need to pay for a few medical bills and this job has enough of a pay raise to cover my expenses.
I don't like my current job and I love working with Oracle. Can someone please help me?

  • Using MS Loopback Adapter

Hi, I am running 10g at home on Windows XP Pro. I have installed 2 network connections, one for home internet (DHCP) and another one created with Microsoft Loopback Adapter for running Enterprise Manager.
To run EM, I have to disable the DHCP connection and enable Loopback Adapter. Is there a way to be able to run EM even with both connections enabled? Thanks.

Assuming you set a specific IP address for the loopback adapter, you should be able to specify that IP address in the URL (or an entry in your hosts file that resolves to that IP address) while both connections are active.

You may have a lot of greif if this is the wrong version of adaptor for 8.1. I too was directed to this EAR file when looking for the 8.1 adaptor. The problem looks like it is in the weblogic-ra.xml file in BEA_SAP_1_0.rar. The some of the xml entries for <map-config-properties> loo incomplete:
              <map-config-property>
              <map-config-property-name>bselocation</map-config-property-name>
              </map-config-property>
              <map-config-property>
              <map-config-property-name>bseeis</map-config-property-name>
              </map-config-property>
              Are missing a value tags.
You can try adding some dummy ones in order to get passed the SAX exception but you may run into more problems. (I was going to install this my self but never got round to it in the end).
              Good Luck

  • Multicasting problem with MS Loopback Adapter

My IBM software dispatcher requires Microsoft Loopback Adapter on my Application Servers.
Unfortunatly, multicasting does not work with MS Loopback Adapter. I am running WebLogic
6.1 on Windows 2000 Application Server. Is this a known problem? Has it been fixed
in a Service Pack? Is there a way around it?
              Thanks in advance,
              Guylaine.

Installing Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 AS fixed the problem.
