Why movies take so long to download

We have an Apple TV that never allow us to enjoy a movie right away when we rent or buy.  It always shows a message saying that it will take 20 hours to be ready to watch.  This is very frustrating!  I'm sure somebody has either experienced this problem, has a better configuration or internet connection.  Anyway.  I'm lost and any advice is welcomed.

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • WHY MAIL TAKES SO LONG TO DOWNLOAD ATTACHMENTS???

I'm using Mail 2.0.7 program to handle my mac.com mail account. It takes ages to download attatchments, while if I open a message from mac.com web page or other mail programs the download is perfect.... any idea why this happens? how can I solve this?
    PowerbookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

How long does "it takes ages" include?
Accessing messages via webmail access using a web browser and with an email client are different entirely and not comparable.
Assuming you are accessing your .Mac account as a .Mac type account in Mail (which is really an IMAP type account and behaves in the same way), did you create your .Mac account as an IMAP type or a POP type account with the other email clients or mail programs?

  • My QuickTime Movies take too long to download

I need some assistance with QuickTime movies that I have uploaded to my website.
I upload several movies and then click on them from my web page, but they don't stream, they take up to 4 or 5 minutes to download before playing.  Is there a way to have them stream as soon as possible without the complete downloading process?
    Thanks,
    Craig

No. This has happened in more than one place, with seemingly perfect internet connections. It appears to be some sort of overload or file corruption at Apple's end. For instance, right now I'm trying to download the movie Elysium for more than 3 days. It takes little more than 15 minutes to download half of the 3.9Gb, but then a problem occurs and it starts again. It this was simply an internet connection issue, it would probably continue from the point where it stopped, wouldn't it? Another possibility would be a problem with my iPad, but I find quite unlikely, because I can download purchased (not rented) movies and tv series normally. My problem is very specific: rented movies.

  • HT4743 Why does it take so long to download from Apple TV?

I am just wondering why it takes so long to download a movie from Apple TV? It would only download if I was in Apple TV and it took over 4 hours. Is this normal?

    Speed is only one factor.
Are you using your ISPs DNS? (go into settings - network - DNS should be set to automatic)
Interference can also cause issues (and can present itself with no changes made by the user). To verify check istumbler.net or netstumbler
Sometimes it can be something on your ISPs end

I am noticing the same thing. It appears to be since the recent update, but I have never had a delay before.

  • Why does purchasing a movie from Netflix take so long to download?

When purchasing a movie from Netflix, why does it take so long to download?

I think you mean iTunes, Netflix is a subscription service and there's no PPV rental
In any case, check your internet speed.
You need a minimum sustained 6mbps connection for HD content
If you are lower turn off HD via the settings

Why does it take so long to download a saved movie from the cloud

Hi first off if your running  fcp 7 with compressor 3.5 and fcp x and compressor 4 on the same drive you may run into problems
as you now have a mix up between Qmasters  which caused me lots of problems when i did any back ground Rendering via compressor of FCP-X
i had to completly remove compressor 3.5 and compressor 4 then put compressor 4 back on again  as the shared rendering out of FCP-X seems to loose the plot with both versions on the same on the same drive there is an app
    Here
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
which you can get allows you to get rid of certain bits of FCS and FCP-X correctly as you may know deleting the app is,nt the whole story as you need to remove the pref etc as well
but its really clearing out every thing to do with qmaster thats is the thing here thats what causes all the issues
really you should follow apple install instructions for FCP -X install ( and put it on separate volumes ) and i know they say there is a way to get every thing working on the same drive ...but it did,nt work for me like you i had massive render times and that 3x crash error
    any way
once i had remove done my remove C3.5 ,C4 and reinstall C4 only it worked straight away from FCP-X using all the cores on my machine
get some thing like istats or run activity monitor to make sure Fcp-x is using all your cores to render and you can actually see if its doing anything at all instead of waiting 5 hours for an error
if you want to use multi core in compressor 4 you have to go into the new apple qmaster tab  and setup up a quick cluster etc
On another note i alway use Optimized media when doing the import as while you editing its back ground render every thing into pro res making it a much nice codec to compress down to H264 which you need for the ATV
i hope that helps a bit ,some else may have a better solution but worked for me
    thanks

  • Why does it take so long to download a movie rental from I tunes. I want to then transfer to my Ipad

Why does it take so long to download a movie rental from itunes. I am doing this to transfer to ipad. This is a question.

I have noticed this here on several machines in our office, all running Leopard.
I just did a test and subscribed to the same 16.8MB podcast on a machine running 10.4.11 and another running 10.5.8.
The Tiger raced straight through and downloaded at a constant rate, taking about 15 seconds.
The Leopard raced until 1.2MB downloaded and then slowed to a crawl, going up 0.1MB every 10 or 15 seconds.
Very strange. I've noticed the Leopards were having similar problems doing downloads through the Software Update utility.
I compared downloading an update from Support Downloads in Safari and there is no problem.
So (for me) this issue is applying to Leopard rather than Tiger, and only to downloads via SU and ITunes, not regular http downloads through a browser.

  • Why does it take so long to download on my iPad 2?

Why does it take so long to download on my iPad? My wifi is strong and working perfectly with other computers.  Also, it's slow on my original iPad.

I did what was suggested above (closing all apps and then resetting the iPad). Then I tried to download the movie the Smurfs (for my kid ofcourse!). It's 3.4 GB. In the first hour I have downloaded 1 GB. So it looks like it's going to take at least 3.5 hours to download a movie.  Does this seem correct? My speed is 10 mbps.
Sems a little high but not unreasonable.  Figure that a true 10Mbps would take almost exactly an hour for 3.4GB.  Your 10Mbps rate is the rate to the ISP, which is the absolute best that you can hope for.  Maneuvering data through the many switches in the Internet probably cuts that in half, which would mean two hours.  However, that means absolutely nothing because the weak link in the chain is the rate that the server can send the data.  Consider that we just had a major holiday with many children expecting many movies.  It wouldn't surprise me if the server can send only 2 or 3Mbps per subscriber.
By the way, I do not agree that closing apps and resetting the iPad makes the slightest bit of difference.
My theoretical rate is a tad shy of 5Mbps.  As best I can recall, movies take several hours to download.  My routine is to start the download as I'm going to sleep.  The movie is then available the next day.  No fuss, no bother.

  • Why does it takes so long to download the new version of Itunes?

why does it takes so long to download the new version of Itunes?

Since you cannot download iTunes on an iPod touch, this would not seem to be the correct forum for this question. I'd suggest you post full details of your problem in either the iTunes for Mac forum or the iTunes for Windows forum, as applicable to your system.
    Regards.

  • HT1577 why does it take so long to download a film i have been quoted 18hours for that i may as well buy the film on cd

Why does it take so long to download from itunes I have been quoted 18hours but on the actual device it took 4 hours .When other sites can download films etc at a quater of the time such as amozon takes 30 mins for a HD film to download

Well, I can't exactly answer why it's taking too long but here's the average time estimate depending on your internet speed:

  • Why does it take so long to download software like Adobe to a Mac laptop

I just recently bought a MacBook Pro and I am installing Adobe Reader and it is taking sooooo long to install.  I have been installing since 8:30 pm and its now 10:27 and its only up to 42%.  Why does it taking so long?  Also I have downloading other software and it took forever as well.  Why does it take son long to download software to the Mac?

    Something is obviously wrong.
Stop the download and take the machine back to Apple as you have 90 days free support.
They will test the machine to see if it's a hardware issue or a problem with the Mac itself.
If they say it's fine and it surfs/downloads fast on their connections, then it's likely something wrong with your home network or router.
Did you by any chance change your DNS settings in Network?
This could be the problem, delete what you entered and reboot the machine, the ISP's default DNS settings will return.
To OpenDNS? On the router? Are you using your own router of it someone managing it for you?
Are you over 21 and can you legally surf for adult sites? If some sort of filtering is on, this could be the cause.
OpenDNS doesn't have servers everywhere, so it causes certain downloads from Akamai servers to come from a lot farther away than your ISP servers.
Have you run Internet speed tests? Using other machines on your network are they fast?
Is your router or modem old? Did you power them off, wait 30 seconds and power them back on?
It's rather a lot to try to figure out network issues, you may have to call in a local professional.

Once an item enters the download queue, the user cannot remove it. Either let it complete the download (easiest) or contact the iTunes Store customer support department through the Contact page  and ask them if they'll remove the item(s) from your queue for you.
