Why Multiple Kernel "issues" w/G4 iMac/Tiger?

Folks:
Lately have had a run of KPs in my ten year old +- G4 iMac . . . so we know it's "old" but overall when it's running well, it's fine.  I ran the Apple Hardware test and that shows "OK" . . . I have SmartReporter and that shows fine.  I booted up in ext HD and ran DU to Repair Disk, and I ran Onyx as well . . . .  Today, I was trying to see if it was related to the browser, lately Ten4Fox, so I switched back to Camino but got the same "we don't support your browser" and KP there as well . . . .  Then I tried to not use the internet at all and things were going well for awhile, but then got another KP that way.  The computer has stopped generating "Crash Reports" to send to Apple and now just gives the kernel panic in a CLI note in black bars with white text that drops down over the desktop; multiple times the "grey" screen with the "You need to restart" happened, we aren't wasting time doing that now . . . the mouse and screen freezes and the CLI kernel trap info shows up.  BTW, I also had done a PRAM reset, and then I saw BDAqua's post here about doing it three times, which I did the other day and it seemed like the problem was fixed . . . until today with 3 of them.  Seems like it can happen right on revive from sleep or after running the computer for awhile.  Any thoughts?  I've been told already, "It's time for a new computer" and I'm reconciled to that in the near-long term as the "answer" . . . just wondering if I can get some insight into troubleshooting my dear old G4 friend and keep it going for awhile longer???  Can anybody hep me?  Final note, I've got the int HD partitioned and running Xu/Lu 12.0.4, the crash problem started there and that's not new, but then continued over into the OSX side.  Today, I was logged into Xu/Lu and did not have any KP while there . . . but did again back in OSX . . . .  Is it "soft" or "hard" ware issue?  I can't tell . . . .  Many thanks for any insights.

BDAqua:
Ah, "thermal paste" . . . Austin Powers didn't think about that one . . . possibly there is a flaw in the thermal paste . . . .   BTW, I did get some expert feedback on one of my earlier crash reports and the different RAM types was pointed out as a possible source of problems . . . and indeed it might be, but that difference has been there since the very first day . . . ten + years ago???  Would that suddenly become a problem?  The previous reports didn't seem to offer much in terms of clues . . . this is the first time I saw "uncorrectable machine check" . . . that sounds more serious . . . even ominous . . . maybe this is all due to the impending Halloween?????  Hmmmmmmmm . . . .

  • Multiple kernel panics in Lion (iMac 27")

    Hello,
    I know this problem has already been mentioned by several people here but not with my combination of computer/applications in use.
    I have a 27" iMac from October 2010. Before upgrading to Lion I NEVER had any problems, especially not kernel panics. After upgrading to Lion I started have constant wifi droppings and after a few days kernel panics. Since Apple hasn't addressed that problem (the 10.7.1 update didn't solve anything), I tried a clean install, disabling wifi and working with ethernet while I prepared everything (1 To is a lot of data to save).
    This didn't do any good unfortunately. Just now I had two kernel panics in a row while back on the wifi connection.
    Here is the first kernel message (the second is much longer)

    This is the full report on the first panic, it did strike me as short. But then again it is possible that I didn't scroll down properly. In any case, here is the second panic report, which should be related to the same problem:

  • Gratuitous kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this

    Ok, I know I probably shouldn't have installed Tiger on my G3 iMac so you don't need to remind me. However, it runs pretty good and I hardly ever even see the beachball spinning when I ask it to do something. What I am shocked, shocked by is the ridiculous amount of frequency that I end up with a kernel panic that gives me the 'gray screen' telling me I have to restart my Mac. I have been able to keep this down to a minimum by pointedly only running programs and commands one at a time with a good sized pause in between but even with that I am diappointed with how often it happens. Call me a heretic, but I think it would have killed Apple to stick with their classic OS framework rather than go to UNIX. I would like some tips about things I could do to minimize this occurence above what I already do. It really ***** to have had to reinstall Tiger about 3 or 4 times since I upgraded and have to change up the screen position, dock, desktop, mouse, screen saver, and reinstall all my programs after my iMac has croaked and finally accepted another reload of Tiger.

    I'll ignore the major portion of your post which comes across as a rant and try to stick with the title: "kernel panic on my iMac G3 running Tiger. How can I prevent this?"
    Kernel panics are usually caused by bad or marginal RAM or RAM that isn't seated properly, or by buggy or damaged software or drivers. In the past, problems with marginal RAM for Macs has shown up when people upgraded to new versions of the OS -- which might fit your situation.
    Although your CPU is slow, you have lots of RAM, so Tiger should run OK, if the RAM is not defective. You don't mention how much free space you have on your hard drive. Typically you're going to need at least 5 Gig free to give Tiger breathing room.
    Running a system maintenance utility like Yasu would probably also be beneficial:
    http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/
    What does the hardware test for your Mac say about your system? This might help us determine if there is a hardware cause for the kernel panics.

  • Multiple kernel panics & black screen on Macbook Pro Retina early 2013

    My Macbook Pro Retina (early 2013, 8GB ram, 250 GB hard drive) has been experiencing multiple kernel panics forcing rapid-fire restarts of the computer multiple times within a very short time frame. This is followed by the screen staying black even if the computer is on (keyboard lit up, can hear volume buttons) but nothing is on the screen. Once the screen goes black, I have to employ some combination of manually shutting it down (by holding down the power button) and then turning it back on (+/- doing an SMC reset) to get the screen working again. I also tried a PRAM reset once, but it didn't seem to have any effect, and I've repaired the disk permissions.
    This issue has happened multiple times in the past week. It seems to vary as to how long it takes to happen again (could be a few days, could be less than an hour), and it has happened during multiple different activities (surfing the web, using Word, using Mail). I have experienced this both on Mavericks and after updating to Yosemite over the weekend.
    I took it to the Apple Store on Saturday and while the Genius saw that the screen was black when I initially brought it in (even though the computer was on), we couldn't recreate the issue and the diagnostic tests he ran showed nothing. It even started back up fine for him. I thought I was OK, until I had another round of kernel panics + black screen this afternoon. At this point, doing a normal restart of the machine results in a kernel panic before it even makes it off of the loading screen and then a black screen.
    This time, I checked the logs and saw the panic report included below. I don't know enough about this to understand what it means, but hopefully someone else does! Some internet searching has suggested that it might be a problem with the GPU (and the log below says GPU panic). Help, please!

    Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
    Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
    If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
    Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
    Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
    *An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Why is the brightness of my iMac become 100% automatically when I turn on..

    Why is the brightness of my iMac become 100% automatically when I turn on my computer even though I set the brightness to the lowest before I shut it down.
    I want to set the brightness to the lowest every time I turn on the computer automatically.
    Is there anything I can do?

    Hi,
    There seems to be a serious issue with screen brightness on the 24" iMac. About 6 days ago I bought a 24" iMac (2.66 Mhz model w/4 GB RAM + 640HD).
    Out of the box it had Leopard 10.5.5 installed; there were several problems.
    1. Screen brightness was way too BRIGHT. Display preferences would not pull brightness down. At least not down far enough so that the screen could be viewed without extreme discomfort. Plus add insult to injury a reboot would reset the preferences to maximum brightness. NOTE: An upgrade to 10.6.1 did NOT fix the issue.
    2. Viewing a browser page via either Safari or Firefox (latest versions of each) was not good. A vertical scrolling would be jumpy and appear pixelated. Upgrade to 10.6.1 seemed to fix most of the issue in Safari, but Firefox was still not working properly. The issue appeared like a horizontal "ripple" in about the bottom 2/3 of the browser window. The effect did NOT extend outside of browser window. Changing screen resolutions did not work.
    3. Connecting a USB Logitech head set caused issues with Sound preferences.
    If the head set was connected during startup the machine would recognize them as main sound. The internals speakers did NOT appear in the Sound preferences. as an optional choice. Removing USB headset and reboot would return the internal speakers to the Sound preferences. Plugging in headseat would work for a while. We could repeat and same problem would occur.
    These are all in 10.6.1 - definate bugs.
    Returned with the iMac to the Apple store. Bottom line, after nearly three hours; the Apple technician, and everyone could see what we were talking about.
    Regarding the screen brightness. Nothing they could do about it. They stated that "not too many people have complained about it, to their knowledge." They stated that the electronics in the "florescent" panel could not be turned down the same way. TRANSLATION: The programers at Apple let this one slip past them. As a customer (software programmer & network analyst) I expected a bit more of an intelligent answer.
    However.
    Examining the 20" model I noticed that we could turn down the screen brightness - at least to a level that my wife and I could live with. PLUS the settings remained after a restart. Something that was NOT happening with the 24" model.
    So - we exchanged the 24" for a 20". Frankly we are a LOT happier. The Safari/Firefox issue is still carried over to the 20". However it is not nearly so noticable on the smaller screen.
    Plus the USB headset did not cause the same Sound Preference issues.
    So - Thanks for the speedy return/exchange of the iMac. But someone needs to look at this from the programming side of things.

  • Multiple Kernel Panics

    Hello guys, I'm experiencing multiple kernel panics on my 15'MBP 6,2 with installed OS 10.6.6. I tried to archive and reinstall the OS, resetted the PRAM, successfully repaired disk and wrong permissions, tried different sw (Drive Genius etc) BUT the issues come back in the short term. I performed a few tests with techtool pro 5 and it seems all good except temperature of SSD disk which is excessive. It also tells to repair disk because it may be corrupted, but as I said, it was repaired a few times and it cannot stay well for long time. Apple HW test all passed. I also suspect there is something wrong with Flash player too on safari because when surfing the net it often closes the plugin and report another error. And finally, I think there are issues with automatic switching between discrete+integrated graphic cards too. Safari often displays big squares instead of static images and flash contents. In fact when I force use of nvidia discrete card, it returns to run and show anything without image distortion. I will post the latest today's crash log here, please note that I had an external HD for backup on FW800 port. But the panics still happen with or without any device connected to MBP ports. Many thank's to anyone who will help and work on this issue.

  • Multiple kernel panics- help really needed-log included

    Please bare with me, want to give as many detaisl as possible:
    So in general the computer is running along fine, there are a few odd quirks including the inability to open azureus bit torrent files by double-clicking them though I used to be able to, and occasional airport outages which are becoming of recent a bit more frequent. But I could live with that, maybe azureus is acting screwy and maybe my ibook is just located in an odd place and getting spotty reception.
    Yesterday when I unplugged my computer from teh wall, it froze after 3 minutes, no "please restart your computer" just a complete freeze. I shut down and restarted only to have it kernel panic immediatly. Restarted it and bam another kernel panic. This time I just shut it down, and let it rest. Turned it back on only to have nothign happen except the fans starting blasting at full power. Another hard reset. Got to the finder, greeted by message about the date being incorrect and potential problems this coudl cause. I worked for five minutes and then another kernel panic. I let the computer "rest" over night, and began using it in the morning with airport off, and it worked fine, i then turned on airport and it has since been working fien except for the occasional airport outtages from before.
    Incidentally the computer has frozen before, always after I have unplugged the ibook from the wall. I have heard the multiple kernel panics like the one I experienced likely result from hardware issues, just wanted to see if there are any software fixes I can make before I send it in.
    I'm including my kernel panic log in the hopes that someone can decipher it and explain what the issue may be. I'm starting to think there mayb be an issue with the airport card, but I really do not know. Ram has been upgraded but I am confident that the ram is not at all faulty.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi Matteo,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    You might be having a problem with your hard drive. Did you check the S.M.A.R.T. status? You might want to Repair your disk.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • IMac isn't loading a specific website (can't connect to that server), regardless of browser, though the same website will load on other computers on same network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?

    Our iMac isn't loading a specific website (we get a message saying it can't connect to that specific server), regardless of browser (I've tried it in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox). However, the same website, which is for a major medical provider, loads without any issue on our other computers on the same wireless network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings? All other websites seem to be loading without issue on the iMac.

    ... Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?
    Possibly. Make sure you are not using a proxy server. Look in Safari Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > "Change Settings..." This will take you to the applicable Network Preferences. Make sure that nothing is selected in the "select a protocol to configure" list. It should look like this:
    Still not working?
    Locate your Terminal app. It is in your Utilities folder. Open Terminal.
    In Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item'
    This will produce a list of all your account login items.
    While you are in Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
    This will produce a list of all non-Apple kernel extensions. There will be few, if any.
    Post the results of the above.

  • Is it possible to compile NVIDIA for multiple kernels simultaneously?

    Hi all,
    First, the reference is http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVI … tom_kernel, as well as a small discussion I started at http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=20410.
    Basically, currently the nvidia-beta (and I'm sure the rest of the nvidia scripts) use `uname -r` to obtain the current kernel name, which is then used for the rest of the PKGBUILD. Its relatively trivial to alter that to the name of whichever kernel, meaning there's no problem compiling nvidia.ko for kernel26-ice from within kernel26 itself, and to alter the name of the package so that your nvidia-beta package does not need to be over-written (you then have two nvidia.ko, each for their own kernel.
    My question is, is it possible for a single PKGBUILD to compile nvidia.ko for all kernels currently installed (probably through looking at either /lib/modules or /usr/src)? This would mean only one maintainer is needed for nvidia-beta or nvidia-17xx or whichever series, and the same PKGBUILD could be used on any system, even those with multiple kernels.
    I'm not very familiar with the limitations of PKGBUILDs, or the rules governing what they may or may not do (for example, accessing and checking the machine itself outside the fakeroot?), so this may be nonsense, if so feel free to point it out. Another idea would be for a simple bash script to create as many PKGBUILDs as required, based on the most recent nvidia-beta PKGBUILD, simply sed-replacing uname -r with the appropriate kernel names and modifying the PKG name.

    Hi,
    it's not difficult to do but I DO NOT recommend to do it (see my notes below the code).
    PKGBUILD
    pkgname=nvidia-beta
    pkgver=185.18.04
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="NVIDIA beta drivers for kernel26."
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    [ "$CARCH" = "i686" ] && ARCH=x86 && NV=0
    [ "$CARCH" = "x86_64" ] && ARCH=x86_64 && NV=0
    provides=(nvidia=${pkgver})
    url="http://www.nvidia.com/"
    depends=(kernel26 nvidia-utils-beta)
    conflicts=('nvidia-96xx' 'nvidia-71xx' 'nvidia-legacy')
    license=('custom')
    install=('nvidia.install')
    source=(ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-$ARCH/${pkgver}/NVIDIA-Linux-$ARCH-${pkgver}-pkg${NV}.run)
    md5sums=('95b67e6f17cc54d36ae2743df76c9f6d')
    [ "$CARCH" = "x86_64" ] && md5sums=('33967a6d452c562bb8af02b0734ebf22')
    build()
    # Read list of installed kernels
    KERNELS=`ls -1 /lib/modules`
    # Extract the nvidia drivers
    cd $startdir/src/
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-${ARCH}-${pkgver}-pkg${NV}.run --extract-only
    cd NVIDIA-Linux-${ARCH}-${pkgver}-pkg${NV}
    cd usr/src/nv
    ln -s Makefile.kbuild Makefile
    # Now build modules for each kernel
    for KERNEL in $KERNELS; do
    echo "Building for ${KERNEL}"
    # Compile the module
    make SYSSRC=/lib/modules/${KERNEL}/build module || return 1
    # Install kernel module
    mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/${KERNEL}/kernel/drivers/video/
    install -m644 nvidia.ko $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/${KERNEL}/kernel/drivers/video/ || return 1
    # Clean
    make clean || return 1
    done;
    nvidia.install
    # arg 1: the new package version
    post_install() {
    KERNELS=`ls -1 /lib/modules`
    for KERNEL in $KERNELS; do
    depmod -v $KERNEL > /dev/null 2>&1
    done;
    # arg 1: the new package version
    # arg 2: the old package version
    post_upgrade() {
    post_install $1
    rmmod nvidia || echo 'In order to use the new nvidia module, exit Xserver and unload it manually.'
    # arg 1: the old package version
    post_remove() {
    KERNELS=`ls -1 /lib/modules`
    for KERNEL in $KERNELS; do
    depmod -v $KERNEL > /dev/null 2>&1
    done;
    op=$1
    shift
    $op $*
    PS: I haven't test it because I don't use multiple kernels
    But be aware of possible problems. Some modifications may influence kernel functionalities, so once you compile a driver for kernel26-xyz on kernel26-zyx the module may not work on kernel26-xyz or may cause unexpected issues.
    You also should not (you possibly even won't be able to) build module for different release version (eg. build for 2.6.28 on 2.6.29) due changes in kernel headers.
    I'm also not sure if it is safe to generate module dependencies for another kernel then you are currently running.
    As you can see above, it is not problem to make such a PKGBUILD, but it also brings too many problems and it's too dangerous that it is better to stay at current model "module package for each kernel". So if you want to you may try to use this PKGBUILD, but I strictly warn everyone else that it may cause more harm then use so don't blame me if something goes wrong. You were warned .

    Hi mshields1162,
    Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
    Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
    We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
    Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:

  • Multiple OS issues with Email set up; "People" ; Synching phone not working as advertised

    Nokia Lumia 822
    Purchased yesterday (2/10/13)
    So far I have spent 14 hours attempting to resolve what feel like endless errors and bugs. If I can;t get these resolved in the next 48 hours the phone goes back. I am so disappointed  I waited especially for this phone - heard great stuff. My experience is it sucks. Worst phone ever.
    1) POP3 email accounts are non functional. I have attempted to set up and delete and re-set up now multiple times. Each time presents a fresh new nightmare.
    Issue 1 - Email account  receives email but will not send. Error message goes something like  <" Problem sending message. Message failed to send. Problem with Files or Data on your device." >
    Issue 2 - Tapping email + accounts sends me back to start screen cannot even set up account
    Issue 3 - I  get to add email account I enter my information but no account is created
    Issue 4 - I set up an account and I get an error message stating my information cannot be found.
    Issue 5 - trying to open email from start screen just resets to start screen  over and over and over NEVER opens the account.
    These are deal breaker issues. I have multiple email accounts on different platforms. If I cannot access my various emails AND send from those accounts this is NOT the phone for me.
    2) PEOPLE does not function. ALSO multiple various issues and never the same one twice.
    Issue 1 - I tap on a contact and get sent to the start screen over and over and over  and over again.
    Issue 2 I tap on a contact and the phone freezes and wont respond unless I pull the battery
    Issue 3 I open a contact and make an edit, save the contact but the change is never reflected in the list
    Issue 4 I try and search for a contact and the search freezes - only option is to return to start screen
    3) Scrolling thru any APP randomly takes me back to start screen.
    I dread attempting to synch Outlook calendar and contacts on my PC to hotmail - especially if I can't even set up email. And it seems like even holding it will jettison me out of anything I'm doing and back to start screen.
    If I can't get these issues resolved.  look like I'll be going  back to my 3 year old Blackberry Bold which performed flawlessly. It may not be the most impressive phone out there but it did what I needed it to do with out any issues.

    Interesting Twitter conversation VZWSupport on Twitter.  It was suggested to try a HARD reset - and if that doesn't work take the phone back.
    Since I don;t have anything set up yet  that's my solution.
    I see a BlackBerry Z10 in my future

  • Wake issues with 24" iMac

    I am having the issue with my iMac lab. Units will go to sleep and when a student tries to use the unit there is no response from keyboard but mouse will respond. They need to be restarted to resolve the issue but should it go to sleep again we start the process all over. I have 17 in this lab and have been sending them in for repair two at a time. They replaced the DC/SATA cable on the first two and it resolved nothing. Resetting PRAM and PMU also did not correct the issue.
    Any ideas? Hardware? Software?

    I have a computer lab with 25 with the same problem. I found this happened after they keyboard update. Has anyone really solved this problem with the keyboards not responding after the computers go to sleep? We have to restart several every day, every hour. What is apple doing with this?
