Why must I purchase OSX Lion for my Macbook?

I have an elderly MacBook that runs quite happily but wants to use Mobile Me. I also have a new iPad and iPhone bothe with OS 5.1 and which want to use iCloud. So how do I get to sync my MacBook with my other devices without having to buy a new OS for it??

iCloud needs Lion; there's no way around it.
It gets worse - an elderly MacBook may not run Lion well, if it all. This is just Apple dragging us into the future yet again, whether we like it or not.
You may wish to consider buying Lion until you can afford a new Mac, which will have it already. In the meantime download all your iDisk contents from Mobile Me because it is going away as of June 30:

Your @me.com email will still work no matter what.

  • How to get newly purchased osx Lion DL link or App ?

    howdee,
ive submitted this question for email support, since it is specific to my purchase - but im assuming others might have the issues as well...
1 - yesterday i submitted an order for a piece of hardware and for the osx-lion software...
2 - yesterday my account status said something like 'pending' - while it went thru billing, i assume...
3 - today my account status shows the hardware is in-process/shipping and the software is complete...
4 - i received the nice email saying that i should go to my order-page and click on a 'download-now' link...
5 - that link does not exist, the order-status says 'complete' which (when mouse-hovered) says that i will not receive a physical item...
    comments:
1 - since i am on snow-leopard on a core-2-duo, i cannot do anything fancy like go straight to mavericks on this machine...  altho i have on other machines (and have the mavericks link available in my account)...
2 - under apple-s/w-update: it says im up to date on this machine (the core2duo with 10.6.8 SL)...
3 - under mac-app-store: it does not show my purchase of osx-lion, so i cannot redownload it in case i ever lose it...
4 - when i did the original purchase, i did NOT get an app-store link which tried to do the download for me (semi-obv. from prev.comment)
5 - basically, with the two paid-osx systems (lion/mountain-lion) it is fairly hard to sort out what-to-do...
    questions:
1 - how do i find a REAL (not some non-legal-stuff) download link for my purchased osx-Lion ?
2 - how do i get to this magic-link a second time, assuming something dreadful happens to my hdd or my backups or whatnot ?
if i come up with some answers i will post a reply or two, assuming i can...
    tia, h.

wellp, the correct answer was, indeed, to wait...
just awhile ago i received another TWO emails from apple:
1 - was an email saying that the password for the other-email's-attachment was: xxxxx
    2 - was an email with a password-protected PDF file containing a redemption-code: yyyyy
the instructions are basically to go into the app-store (with the ID you want to use - be careful here)
and then in the regular featured-tab, there is a redeem-link on the right-hand-side...
type in the magic-code from inside the pdf and -poof- the osx-lion (or mountain-lion) app is available to download...
in fact, by default (if it can), the download will begin immediately...
i guess the only-thing that is kinda-useful to note in all this is that the instructions in the original-email
which claims that you will get a download-link on your order-status are wrong...  just wait - youll get
another two emails with the actual-instructions on how-to-download the sw from the app-store...
    hth, h.

You cannot use Lion until you have upgraded to 10.6.8:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
You received a coupon you can use and redeem on the App Store to download Lion. There is no App Store in Leopard.

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro. After setting up my new laptop, I got an email from Apple about upgrading to OSX Lion. I wasn't sure what the email was so I accidentally deleted it. Afterwards, I was informed that I need this upgrade and I have no way of retrieving this email. Is there anyway another email can be sent out to me so I don't have to purchase OSX Lion through the App Store?

  • "this apple ID was not used to purchase OSX Lion"

Have the late 2009 imac (21.5" with 4GB and 500GB HD) and was running OSX Lion 10.7.5. This is my kids' computer and the hard drive was pretty much full up of junk. So I wiped the hard drive and began the process to reinstall OSX Lion using the original installation DVD that came with the computer when I purchased it. Goes through all the steps to install and then asks me to login with Apple ID and comes back with "This Apple ID was not used to purchase OSX Lion" Well, of course I purchased it. It came with the computer. It is the only installation disk I have. Talked to Apple support, tried different solutions with them. They even sent another disk. Same message.

Perchance, was there a USB Thumbdrive version Lion 10.7 included with the computer
when it was new? If you had that, (as the computer likely shipped with 10.7 installed only
if it had a backup installer) then you could install from there.
If the computer has an internal optical drive, there should have been grey-label install
restore media discs (DVD specific to that model build) with applications & OS X on it.
Such an original DVD disc set would also have an Apple Hardware Test on DVD.
The 10.7 Thumbdrive version was offered on a limited basis, no longer available, at $69.
Per the MacTracker database, the only model shown which shipped with 10.7 installed
and also had an optical superdrive, was the iMac (21.5, Late 2011) model. Earlier model
versions show the shipped OS X on media (DVD) as being OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard.
Avoid Mavericks if you have/possess older software that you would be using regularly.
There may also be a firmware update that could make it hard to revert to the original
OS X version if the Mavericks is installed on certain models that supported it later.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can I install OSX lion on a MacBook 4.1?

Can I install OSX lion on a MacBook 4.1? I'm trying to install iCloud on this computer and I need to install OSX (10.7.4) or higher. I don't see OSX (7) available in the store.

    mqanderson wrote:

Yes. Lion is not offered in the App Store, so you must phone Apple on the number shown in the Apple Online Store.
Explain that you want to purchase Lion for your MacBook4,1.
After Apple collects their fee ($20 + tax) they will send you a download code in an encrypted PDF document, and in another email supply the key to unencrypt the PDF.
"Redeem" the code in the App Store to purchase Lion.
Make sure you have enough memory; your Mac can address a maximum 6 GB. Lion's minimum requirement is 2 GB but I recommend at least 4 GB. More is better.
