Why must I turn off wifi calling for continuity to work?

I find it extremely frustrating that I have to choose between either the continuity features (dialing/receiving calls from iPad/mac, handoff) and WiFi calling on Tmobile. Both were features that were advertised heavily, while there was no mention that they wouldnt work together. Besides- wouldnt it be easier to handoff calls if they are over WiFi and there is no cell network involved?
*rant

I also want to use WiFi calling because the T-Mobile signal in my home area isn't strong. I also really like the Continuity feature that lets me leave my phone "wherever" in the house and catch or make calls from either my iMac, MacBook Pro or iPad (which are typically in different rooms) when the phone isn't at hand.
Not being able to use WiFi Calling and Continuity at the same time is indeed both disappointing and frustrating.
It makes little sense without at least Apple saying why this can't happen simultaneously. Which protocol is being used to "transmit" calls between the iPhone and other devices?
It doesn't make sense when I try to imagine any kind of conflict, since my iPhone is great at using Bluetooth, Cellular and WiFi all at the same time (I can browse the internet using Safari, while on a cellular call via a bluetooth headset). Hopefully it's just a software thing that hasn't been programmed in yet, and will appear with a future update? One can hope!
[EDIT]  PS: It may also have something to do with T-Mobile, since they are still the only ones directly supporting the feature... I'm investigating...

  • Why must I sometimes turn off WiFi to download or send email?

    I have a Droid Razr Maxx, though I don't think it's an Android or even Verizon issue. The problem, which is intermittent, and happens for my friend also on an iPhone, is that sometimes I'm not able to download or send email when connected to a Wifi hot spot. If I turn off WiFi on the phone, it then works fine using the carrier's data plan. Has anyone else experienced this problem and/or know a solution for it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Out of Office responses are best set up in the webmail account which you access using a browser.
    So check there first.
    If you set it up in Thunderbird, then you would have had to leave Computer on and Thunderbird running connected to internet all the time.
    You would have created a template email to use. This would be in the 'Templates' folder.
    You would also have set up a Message Filter to respond to emails in address book using the Template email.
    So check in Message filters for a filter that does this.
    Tools > Message filters
    or
    Menu icon > Message filters > Message filters

    Can a one please help me turn off auto play for Facebook the option is no longer in my  General settings  why is this ?

    And yet the link you posted only tells you how to do it on the Facebook App for Android. Nothing about the Facebook page is mentioned at all, or how to do it on an iPhone.
    With that said, and assuming you have the most up to date version of the Facebook App, you can now turn the auto play feature Off within the Facebook App itself.  Tap on the "More" icon on the bottom right, then scroll down to Settings->Videos and Photos->Auto Play. If Smart auto-Play is on turn it off. Then you can set the check mark on "Never Play Videos Automatically" which is the same as Off.

    What TC do you have? Model number direct from the base is a big help, it will be A1 followed by 3 numbers.. eg
    A1409 Gen 4.. The new AC is A1470
    How is it setup?
    I need the whole network setup. what modem/router, how is the TC connected etc??
    I also need to know what IP the ipod gets, so I can see what mode the TC or network router is working in.

    That's the most stupid thing. It may work but the phone shouldn't be going off in your ear while in use from the start.

  • Streaming audio data won't stop unless I turn off the phone for 5 minutes.

    I have been testing the Curve 8330 regarding streaming audio from an icecast server. The address of the station is http://www.AirProgressive.org, click on "listen". (I have already run this by the icecast experts and they say it is a Blackberry "bug")
    BLACKBERRY USERS! PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE STREAM (dataflow) DOES NOT STOP WHEN YOU CLICK "STOP" ON THE MEDIA PLAYER! (and will continue for as long as you leave it on, and even if you turn off your BB for less than 5 Minutes.) I'm not sure if you are charged for these streams, but it seems that the battery is depleted rapidly if this continues without aborting it. See details of my testing below:
    > Access icecast stream by clicking on the link on the website:
         http://www.airprogressive.org:8000/stream.m3u
    > Stream consists of mp3 at 32kbps / 22050 Hz.
    > Stock media player launches, stops at "Do you want to open or save the item."
        > No connections started yet (viewing "List Clients" page of icecast admin interface).
    > Click "open", stream begins playing.
    > Two connections are started instead of just one, always offset by 2 seconds.

    So, to stop the streaming server from communicating with the Blackberry handset, you must either turn it off or disable mobile network for at least 5 minutes.
    It appears that the handset continues to transfer data (and therefore incur charges, if the user does not have an unlimited data plan) if the handset is not turned off or mobile network disabled for at least five minutes. It also runs down the battery much faster because the radio transmitter is actively being used, even if the user is not listening to the stream.
    The Blackberry network has intervening servers that continue to receive data from the streaming server even if the handset is off. This behavior likely has utility to deal with the realities of the cellphone network, to allow the stream to be transferred from one cell to another, and deal with the possibility that the handset may be out of range for up to 5 minutes without "interruption." However, it is hard to turn off the stream.
    QUESTIONS:
    1. Is there a way to stop this sort of behavior using a configuration setting or something? It seems particularly stupid to start a new stream connection each time a STOP/START cycle is completed, allowing the old connections to continue streaming data (even if the data does not make it to the handset).
    2. IS IT TRUE that the user will be "charged" for the data streams that are not disconnected?
    3. Is there a way for a developer to send a signal to the intervening cellphone network to discontinue the orphan streams?
    THANKS!!

    No, I'm using something like this :
    to start...
                       channel = new SoundChannel();
                                            soundPlay = new Sound();
                                            urlReq=new URLRequest;
                                            urlReq.url=mylUrl;  // url of radio mp3
                                            soundPlay.load(urlReq);
                       channel = soundPlay.play();
    to stop it...
                          channel.stop();
                          channel=null;
                          try{soundPlay.close();} catch (e:Error) {} // error or not, the sream won't stop.
    Any idea ? Did you try with a NetStream object ?

  • If i turn off wifi my phone only goes to Edge and not 3g by default?!?!

    I have a very wierd problem with iphone. mine isn't about 3g reception, as i get eprfect reception. the problem is if i turn on wifi and am connected to a network, once i tun off wifi or get out of wifi range, my phone will automatically revent to Edge, and not 3g. i have to go into network settings and disable, then re-enable 3g, and then 3g works perfectly. even if wifi option is on but im not connected to wifi, this works fine. but if and when i connect to a wifi network, suddenly my phone starts reverting back to edge when i either turn off wifi or move out of wifi range. i then have to disable and renable 3g for it to default back to 3g
    whats the deal here!! this seems to be a glitch in the system. anybody else facing this problem?? im on 2.1 and i didn't have this problem with any of the previous 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 and was getting eprfect 3g every time.

    I think reverting to Edge when in sleep mode is by design.
    It make sense when you think about it. Why would you need 3G data speeds for a phone that is sleeping?
    But it should pop back to 3G when you open the phone.
    I have another thread where ACTIVE Edge transmission streams block switching to Wifi.
    This sounds like all part of the same problem. It sounds like Apple reverted to the lowest power radio when in sleep mode, but has still not perfected the switching upon awakening.
    If you wake your phone, but do NOT slide the Un-lock slider till you see 3G/wifi it seems to work better. However, it it doesn't work in 6 seconds, its not going to work at all in my experience.
    Switching to 3G is so time consuming (not only MY time to initiate it but also the time it takes to actually wait out the "No Service" to get to a 3G icon) that I use very little 3G at all. I'd rather have a solid Edge reliability and
    wifi than a flaky unpredictable and very limited coverage 3G. I think I wanted a iPhone V1.5 (half way between V1 and V2. Keep the 3G, its the source of a lot of headaches on this board).
    In 3 years it might be different as 3G spreads, but right now 3G is not worth the trouble and expense given the plethora of free wifi.

  • Does turning off WiFi stop 3GS battery drain?

    Hi All
    This question is NOT directed at those who can't make phone calls for more than 5/10 mins (although I was once that man).
    I have had problems with waking up in the morning to a randomly dead iPhone, even though battery was at least at 50% before going to bed. However, whenever I turn off WiFi before going to bed I wake up to my iPhone only having lost around 10% battery.
    So, my question is, could people with the same problem as me please try turning off their iPhone's WiFi before going to bed and see what happens?
    I would be interested in the results.
    Thanks
    PS. Please no 'Have you tried...' posts as the answer is 'Yes, I have!'

    Hi BigBex,
    My wife is currently using my iphone and in the last couple of weeks, I have noticed that when ever I go to use it, the battery is very low.
    This phone sits in her handbag most of the time not being used, but the battery was still 80% down within the day.
    I turned off WiFi a few days ago and the battery seems to settled have down and has only used about 25% per day.
    I intend to have a much closer look over the next weekend to see if I can determine what may be causing the drain.

    Thank you. I rang Vodafone and although they were not too technical - they suggested my speaker was broken and was probably interfering with the microphone sound out as well. So thank you for the clue - I must admit to not thinking of ringing my carrier supplier.  Thank goodness for two things - it is intermittent and I am due an upgrade phone in 6 weeks.  I can manage till then I hope with the watery sound from time to time.

I am testing with MotionX, garmin blueChart mobile, and a GPS monitoring tool. All show no signal. I have ios 7 and lately when i go to settings-cellular and try to turn off cellular data for some apps it doesnt work. As i turn off cellular data for one app immideately after i exit settings and re-enter settings cellular data for that same app goes back on again by itself. That happens for most of my apps and is reqlly annoying. Whats more annoying is that when i am not using wifi even though the settings for cellular data for safari or facebook or some other app are turned on (since i cant turn them off as i mentioned) i get the message that cellular data is turned off for this app and i cant use the internet at all on cellular data. I have reset to factory settings and restored from backup and the problem persists. Is there some help or tips you can offer me?

    Did you get anywhere with this? I'm considering wiping it and setting it up as a new device.
