Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You can be reached by iMessage at and Start new conversations from. If you never want an iMessage addressed to your registered iMessage email address or addresses, remove the email addresses below you can be reached by iMessage at and be sure to have your cell phone number selected for start new conversations from.
The same for FaceTime at Settings > FaceTime.

  • IMessage and 10.8.2 Phone Number

    Hello,
This morning I installed the new update for OSX ( 10.8.2 ) for my iMac and now iMessages is not recognizing my iPhone number? I have checked my Apple ID info to be sure my phone number is registered. The only messages that show up now in iMessages are the messages I have sent and received via email.
Does any one have any suggestions, or a similar problem?
Just to clarify I am referring to the iMessages app on my iMac, the iMessage app on my iPhone is working fine.
        Thank You
        John

    Hi,
As Sig says both apps are called Messages.
iMessages is just something both of them can do.
On the Mac it is in the Messages app as a separate account
It needs you to register an Apple ID.
It pulls no details about that Apple ID (other than using the password).
It does not have to be the iCloud one that you might be syncing the Contacts app list to the iPhone with.
It does not have to be the iTunes one (if that is separate from your iCloud one).
    In OS X 10.8 and OS X 10.8.1 Messages was at version 7 (.0)
This did not Sync  iMessages send to the iPhone Number
It only did so with iMessages sent to the Apple ID which were then synced across all the devices using the Apple ID that was registered.
At OS x 10.8.2 Messages gets update to Version 7.0.1 and iOS 6 on the phone at the same time allows the iMessages going to the iPhone Number to also be synced to the Messages app on the Mac (and iPads and Touches).
It also allows Send and Receive on the Messages app on the Mac.
I would start with the iPhone
Settings > Messages > Send and Receive.  Is the iPhone Number ticked ?
If it is Not then remove the Apple ID.
Turn Messages Off (Or put the phone in Airplane Mode)
After a few minutes re-add the Apple ID
    Restart Messages on the Mac.
You should now get an Alert Style messages saying the iPhone is now Using the Apple ID and the iPhone Number with an Accept option button
Click this and the iPhone Number will get listed and ticked as a Receive "Alias" and get added to the Send drop down at the bottom.  (In Messages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages Account).

  • MMS messages I send showing received from different phone number

Very strange behavior. I sent an MMS (video taken previously with my iPhone 3GS and stored in my library)to two different iphone users (one message, two recipients)and on their phone it showed a completely different "from phone number" This happened at least three times. Sending the same message a fourth time displayed my correct phone number on the recipients phone. AT&T said it myst be a problem with Apple or my phone, they connected me to Apple. Apple said it can only be a problem with AT&T..... Go figure!

This same thing has happened to me, except I was on the receiving end. I was in the middle of an MMS discussion with a person who I regularly text with. Suddenly, a video MMS from the same person showed up from an unrecognized number - a number neither of us knows. Subsequent MMS messages showed up as having come from the correct number. Has anyone determined any causes and/or solutions to this? Thanks!
    * Both iPhones are 3GS, neither is jailbroken, both are completely updated with most recent software and carrier settings.

  • TS2755 My husband and I have iPhone 4S's.  For some reason, my text messages show up on his phone.  We share the Apple ID, and my settings are such that I send and receive from my phone number and email address. How do we correct this?

My husband and I both have iphone 4S's and for some reason he gets my text conversations w/ other people.  We share the apple ID and I have my settings set to and from my phone # and email address.  He is getting tired of being apart of text messages I am on.  How do we remedy this?

Each of you need to have your own apple id's instead of sharing is the best way. But you can go to each phones settings, messages, send and recieve, and down to start new conversation from, and make sure each of you have your own email address with a check mark beside of it not the same address.

  • I am having trouble with iMessage being activated. It has worked up until yesterday and now won't activate and is saying no address in the send and receive section. My number is there but not ticked. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

iMessage and FaceTime went down yesterday for some people. Mine is still down. My iMessage is saying the same thing about being activated. Sounds like you are still down too. Ignore the status page that says everything is fine - it lies.

    How do I do that?

    Howdy kingtonz,
If I understand you correctly, you want to limit to limit your use of the Messages application to non-iCloud sources such as text messaging through your phone carrier, is that right?
You can turn off the use of iMessages in Settings > Messages > iMessage. See this help article -

Ever since I updated my iPhone 4S and my iPad 2 to IOS 6 all my iMessages are coming to both my iPhone and my IPad. How do I stop the iMessages I send and receive on my phone from receiving on my iPad as well? I have tried going into my settings and making sure I'm only set up to receive iMessages to my cell number and not my email....but that didn't fix the problem.

Here the way to do it, for both, or for only one Go into your settings, Messages and turn on iMessage. It will then send messages that are iMessages to both your iPad and iPhone. You can also turn off this feature on the iPad if you do not want to receive messages on the iPad.

Ok. You don't have to select your number. Just check your email under your "grey" number and then at the bottom of this page you will see the option "Start new conversations from". Select your number.

You can check this support document regarding troubleshooting Messages http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2755
However, SMS is a carrier function. You say that iMessage is working, so I would contact the carrier since it is SMS is not working.

IF that is the only iDevice activated for that recipient, then no. It should not successfully send as an iMessage if the phone is powered off or has no data connection. If you have Send as SMS turned on, it should automatically fallback to SMS after a few minutes. Of course, they won't get this until they power on their phone, assuming they have a text messaging plan with their carrier.

The messages you send to phone numbers are known as SMS. The iPad cannot send those. Only iMessages through email addresses.
