Using OS10.7, my hard disc is full.  When I go to "About this Mac - Storage", it shows that it is entirely filled with "Other".  Does anyone know what "Other" is so that I can delete some of it?

First, reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

I don't know why my Mac hardly connects to the Internet. The Internet bars are there but it does not browse, while my iPhone does.

If other Internet applications such as Mail and iTunes also don't work, run the Network Diagnostics assistant. How far do you get?

  • Hard disc is full

I am trying to get rid of unused stuff on my desktop. How can I clean up my hard disc to have more space?
    Thanks,
    BC

Even in un-paid mode OmniDiskSweeper is great at showing you everything - sorted - and you can double click to get to it in the Finder.
Paying lets you do one thing, delete the file or folder from within the program.
Makes it easy and fast to dig through packages and hidden directories as well as normal places.
Sure, you can even use the terminal to sort and view, but most prefer and can take in more information, when looking at a graphic representation.

  • Apple TV 1st generation. purchases movies are not synch with itunes anymore. Hard disc is full now. How to transfer to MAC.

Sorry for my bad englich. I have an apple TV first generation for somie years now. I used to buy movies. Via Itundes sync they got transferred to my mac mini. This is not working anymore (half a year). Hard disk on apptle TV is full now.
I did not change any configuration. Computer and TV are activated for same store account.

Are you trying to transfer stuff to iTunes from AppleTV or from AppleTV to iTunes.
Syncing of purchases from AppleTV to iTunes is no longer a necessity if your country supports purchases in the cloud - you should just be able to download old purchases from the internet in iTunes - go to the iTunes Store page with the home icon and look for the Purchased Quick Link on the far right.
If AppleTV is full and you want different content you will need to change the sync Settings in iTunes - you can sync manually which is what I preferred.

  • Why is my hard disk so full?

My Mac Mini has a 55 gig hard drive and it only has 200MB left!   As most sites suggest, I have deleted all caches, removed unused programs, deleted old operating systems, emptied the trash, etc.
Finder is telling me that I am using 9.9 gigs but that the drive is full.   Where are the other 45 gigs?
Here is what my finder is telling me about the main HDD:
There is nothing more that I can or want to delete in the "Users" section.  4 gb doesn't seem like much, anyway.
Why is my drive so full?
How can I free up space?

Hi, plenty of great help here, but
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
You might also open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if you are getting frequent errors logging continually.

  • System memory vs disk usage -- why is my hard drive almost full if my system memory is half empty?

I have a white Macbook, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 GB of memory, Mac OS X, version 10.5.8, purchased in 2008. My Mac keeps warning me that my startup disk is almost full, and indeed Activity Monitor shows that my disk usage has minimal free space (2.31 GB). However, the System Memory tab shows that half my space is free.
Does the discrepancy mean that there is lots of space left on my Mac? If not, how can I identify if some sort of error is filling up my memory? Right now, I have a lot of music and documents stored on my laptop, but nothing else, and I would like to be sure it's those two things that are filling up the space.
What is the recommended method for adding more memory to my Mac, if nothing else?

There are two different types of memory in your Mac. There is system memory, more commonly referred to as RAM, and there is disk space. RAM is where the Mac works on data. Disk space is where data is stored for long term storage.
You are in serious danger of causing your Mac to die completely by running it with so little free space on your system drive. It is imperative that you start either deleting or move data off the disk drive. You should have 8 to 10 time as much free space at least at all times for OS X to run will.
A tool that can  with cleaning up your disk drive is OmniDiskSweeper. It will tell you the files and fol,der that are using the most space. That will give you good candidates for deletion or movement.

  • 320GB hard disc is full, but only 112GB of data used

As you can see OmniDiskSweeper could only find 112GB of Data.  The same goes for the Programme WhatSize.
I don't know what these 143GB of music should be either.  I've got 11GB of music in my iTunes library, and maybe 10GB of video files on my mac.  The rest i pictures etc.  Wherever I looked online it said that these programmes would tell me where my storage capacity is being eaten, but they all fail to do so.  TimeCapsule function is switched off.
    Hope Someone can help.
    Cheers

    Hello,
First Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any repeating messages, making huge log files.
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

    Find Any File...

Hold Option key down when clicking on Find to Find All.
Search for say File Size Geater than 1 GB

  • Why is my hard drive suddenly full?

A truly amazing thing has happened. My iMac, which has about 700Gig of memory, suddenly announces it only has 3kb spare! (I discovered this when it refused to let me copy a photo from one file to another). It seems to be because the folder 'Library' is overloaded, but I can't find out which part of it. I have not used the computer for anything which might use up that kind of memory (or any kind of memory - I have iTunes but that only holds 6,000 songs). I am running Time Machine successfully (in itself a small miracle). Does anyone know how I can run diagnostics to find out which file is causing the problem - it certainly shouldn't be there. Thanks so much for reading this.

you probably have some runaway process that's eating up all the space. first, restart the computer. if the problem was with a runaway swap file it will go away. if not you can figure out what's taking all the space using 3rd party tools like [Whatsize|http://whatsize.en.softonic.com/mac], [Omindisksweeper|http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper>, [Disk Inventory X|http://www.derlien.com> or [Grandperspective|http://sourceforge.net/projects/grandperspectiv>. there is also a terminal method described on [this page|http://homepage.mac.com/francines/articles/TigerMisc.html].
you might want to start with the terminal method since it doesn't require installing anything.

  • Hard Disc suddenly full

    Hi All
I have a problem which seems quite popular on these forums but I've not quite found the answer yet on my search. Yesterday I had lots of free space on my (300GB) drive and today it says I have just 651.6MB available. This follows me being "clever" and ensuring that we (the wife and I) both had access to my itunes folder by copying it (and deleting the original) and placing it on the shared folder. Both our itunes accounts are now linked to this shared file and I suspect this is where the issue is.
I have run OmniDiskSweeper and it says I have used up 135.1GB of space taken up where in Finder it says I am using 249.72GB.
Any ideas what's happening here and how I can resolve this?
    Thanks
    DB

    Are you on MobileMe?
    See this FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
Also double check the iTunes preferences to make sure it isn't trying to make a copy of your iTunes library folder.

  • Hard disc full warning

Occasionally when I am writing maths text using 'Equation Editor' I get a message saying the hard disc is full and suggests quitting other applications/windows. If I try and save the work on a CD or backup disc, even after quitting everything else, I still get this message and the work is lost. However next time I use the same programme there may be not problem. It doesn't happen with any other programme.

Hi Jude, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Second question, are you using Filevault?
Third question, have you emptied the Trash?

  • Why does my Mac say my hard drive is full, but that's not true?

Why does my Mac say my hard drive is full, but there should be plenty of space on it?

You need to get a program like OmniDiskSweeper,  it will check your drive and see what is taking up the space.  From there you can decide what to do.

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
