Why my MacbookPro 15 cursor is jumping randomly?

I use both track pad and extenal wireless mouse and the cursor randomly jumps. Already emptied cache, restart and shutdown the Mac.
Is this a hardware defect, malware?.
Appreciate your advise. Thank you

OK... but a) that doesn't quite answer my question - I've still got my fingers crossed for a more helpful, more "supportive" answer, since I'm fairly sure reinstalling OS X is NOT going to solve my problem, since all it will do is just put me right back at square 1, which is not a good place - my MacBook is actually better at the moment, though still not where I feel it should be.
and b) it wasn't some random blog... it was on one of these Apple Support Community threads.
Thanks

  • Firefox 4 on a Dell inspiron 1525 - Cursor Is Jumping...

I'm having a problem (see below as it occured while typing this) when trying to type in a message box on a message board or in the address bar, the cursor will just randomly jump like the mouse has been clicked. This has been occuring more frequently. [I have a problem when trying to type in a message box on any message board websie top of thte or in the address bar on th ]

I have an Inspiron 1525n... and in fact everything works... here're the problems I encountered:
    1) On my system the Wi Fi card is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4310 USB Controller and as such it has no native linux driver and I only managed to get it to work with ndiswrapper (details in this thread)
    2) The home multimedia key and the FN key are not detected so if you want to get them working you need to install third party programs that make a model keyboard and so on.... I think details are described in the hotkeys wiki... As for the play/pause stop and volume keys - they have asigned keycodes so all you need to do is bind xf86 functions to them - here's a sample of my Xmodmap:
    keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
    keycode 160 = XF86AudioMute
    keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
    keycode 162 = XF86AudioPlay
    keycode 164 = XF86AudioStop
    keycode 144 = XF86AudioPrev
    keycode 153 = XF86AudioNext
    keycode 222 = XF86PowerDown
(but you keycodes may be different so check them using xev)
3)I've goten my webcamera to work... partially... It is recognized after installing the package linux-uvc-svn and loading the uvcvideo module, and I've been able to take some good pictures using motion, however I'm yet to find a suitable application (note that the linux-uvc driver should be included in the 2.6.26 kernel)
The IEEE port is recognized, bluetooth and obex server work fine (the card reader also according to the information on the Web, but I haven't tested it yet)
I haven't tested the hdmi port, but that's for when I get a HD TV
EDIT: Ah, and BTW sound works beatifully with the OSS4 driver - everything was recognized by default (I didn't bother trying ALSA, since I use OSS4 on my other PC and it gets me better sound than ALSA)
EDIT2: The home key is detected, you just need to asign keycode for it...

  • Why are the threads start and terminate randomly?

    Hi there,
I got the program below. I am wondering why are the threads start and terminate randomly? Everytime, I run the program, it produces different results.
I know that these four threads have got same normal priority (should be 5), and under windows there is something called timeslice. Then these four threads rotate using this timeslice. How do we know what exactly the timeslice is in seconds? If the timeslice is fix, then why the results are ramdom?
    Thanks in advance!

    t.start();

    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    System.out.println(
    "Exception: Thread main interrupted.");
    System.out.println(
    "Terminating thread: main thread.");
    1. Firstly, I set in the main function:
    Thread.sleep(10000);
and I run the program it gives:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 4
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: main thread.
BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
    Run it again, it gives:
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 4
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: main thread.
BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
And my question was why it outputs like this? It suppose to be:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: main thread.
BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
Why these four threads start and finish randomly each time I run the program? I use Windows, suppose there is a timeslice (i.e. 1 second), these threads have the same priority. Then the threads should start and finish in turn one by one. Am I right?
    2. My second question is:
When I change the codes in the 'main' function into:
    Thread.sleep(10000); -> Thread.sleep(2000);
it gives me the results like:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 4
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 2
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 2
BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)
    Run it again:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 1
BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)
I tried several times. The main thread always terminates before or after the first child thread finished.
My question is why it doesn't output something like:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    Terminating thread: 1
BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)
    or
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: main thread.
BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)

Yes, my machine has multi-core. Then you mean that if I got a one core machine the result should always be:

    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 2

    ???No.

How to explain my second quesiton then? Why the main thread always terminates before some of the child threads end? Thanks a lot.

  • Mouse cursor sometime jumps down

I have ThinkPad Yoga 20CD0-038. If I use OneLink Dock, my mouse cursor sometime jump to down or down-right and sometimes makes a click or right-click. I have two OneLink Dock and two different mouse. It is the same when the mouse is connected to USB in Yoga and to USB in OneLink Dock. It is very annoying, I'm going crazy from it :-(

    Hi,
I have the same problem as well. I don't think it's related to the mouse hardware at all- on mine the mouse curser stays in the same position but Photoshop registeres is elsewhere! If I let go (of holding the mouse button), the mouse is still where I left it. I've had this problem since Photoshop CS4 x64 but the problem still happens on Photoshop CS5 x64 (it was fine at first but after about a month of use now CS5 has started having the same problem).
I've had the problem for a while (almost a year now) and is really annoying! I dont have any tablets, and I've changed my mouse a few times. I am using a laptop with Windows Ultimate x64. It only happens in photoshop, it's fine in Adobe InDesign.
Hopefully someone might come up with a solution!
Thanks to anyone who can help me/us

  • Why does moving the cursor peg the cpu in numbers?

Why does moving the cursor, even by one cell, peg the cpu in numbers?

    Hello
Before posting yesterdays, I tested with a table of 4435 x 8 cells on the iMac described below.
I will be more precise than yesterdays.
Numbers recalculate the entire document after every change. A single new character is sufficient.
Twenty years ago, AppleWorks designers were kind enough to recalculate only what really needed.
It seems that new developers are not relying upon intelligence but upon processor's brute force.
Their code will be efficient … on the machines which will be available within at least five years.
Alas, at this time there will no longer be compatible with the operating system.
Given this awful coding, when AutoSave apply, it must write on disk an entire new index.xml file.
    Same thing when Versions apply.
Under SnowLeopard these two features don't strike.
If you wish, you may send your 'offending' document to my mailbox so I will be able to check the way it behave here. Don’t worry, I don't take care of what is really stored, only of the doc's behavior.

  • How does one prevent cursor from jumping to previous words, deleting words?

A question for my daughter who has a macbook pro with an intel chip using system 10.4.11. On several different programs,e.g. word, gmail, her cursor arrow jumps from the word she is on, backwards, to the previous words, deleting words, phrases, and sentences along the way. What may be the cause? How may we prevent this? Thank you.

Has ANYONE found a solution to this???? My MacBook Pro (purchased Sept 08) doesn't have the ignore accidental trackpad thing. I seriously doubt that it's my typing, since I've used 2 different IBM's, 3 different Gateways, 3 different PowerBooks, a MacBook, and an older MacBook Pro. No problem ever with any of them. Not even once.
If I turn off the Tap to Click (and the two finger right mouse is REALLY HARD to give up) the problem goes away. Several threads give this as the solution. Just turn the trackpad tap on and off. This is a workaround NOT A SOLUTION!!!!!
I've been reading on this for quite a while. "Genius" solutions like reinstalling the OS, etc. Not found one that actually works.
Did I miss it???? Is it out there somewhere????

  • Cursor automatically jumps to end to text when clicking inside and online form

When I type text in an online form like the one I am using to post this question and I want to go back and edit my text I click on the text/line I want to edit in the online form  but my cursor automatically jumps to the very end of the text.
Is there a setting I can change to stop this from happening?
    Thanks.

the best way to test is to remove OnKeyUp="this.value=this.value.toUpperCase();"  and then check whether you still have the problem
strange that the problem is there even when you replace OnKeyUp with onChange because the function should not be executed until the change is complete. also replace OnKeyUp with onBlur

  • Cursor suddenly jumps to upper left corner

I have tried to do a search for this, but most of what I looked at did not seem to fit exactly. I have a desktop iMac G4, the "lamp" style one. Every so often the cursor suddenly jumps up to the upper left corner. I cannot figure out anything I am doing or anything that I might have downloaded that could cause it. It seems to be getting more frequent. I have repaired permissions, run macjanitor.
Does anyone have any suggestions? It is hardly a life or death issue, but it is annoying.
    Many thanks in advance.

You did not mention checking a couple of other items:
    1) Check you mouse connection - unplug/replug. Have you tried using a different USB port to see if you can duplicate the problem? Make sure you don't have fuzz, dust and other assorted ca-ca under the mouse.
    2) Check your preferences - System preferences>Keyboard & Mouse. Make adjustments and see if that helps.
    3) You might also wish to toss your systempreferences.plist found in your Home>Library>Preferences
    Hopes this helps.

  • Cursor periodically jumps on Portege M700

Can anyone suggest a resolution to a problem I have?
As i type, the cursor periodically jumps all over the screen. This means that one moment I am on a particular line, the next I am inserting text into a line elsewhere in the document.
Is this a faulty machine or is it a "feature" of the M700?

Thanks for that. This seems to work. It is a bit of a pain though as you need to either connect a mouse or keep enabling the touch pad. Perhaps Toshiba might like to rethink this "undocumented feature" of the M700!

I installed Yosemite yesterday, and now, whenever I try to write an email, my cursor keeps jumping all over the place.  I can't write more than a few words without my cursor jumping back in the middle of one of the previous words.  I makes Mail almost unusable.  Am I the only one with this problem?

Similar problem. Mine seems to happen in mail - my cursor jumps to the line below and carries on typing - almost as if I'd pressed the down arrow to move the cursor. It seems to happen more when I type an apostrophe too.
