Why my mouse pointer often freeze during heavy hard disk activity?
Hi!
My mouse pointer often freeze during heavy disk activity: copying files, extracting archives, downloading and encrypting files from mega.co.nz, etc. The whole system becomes unresponsive. Currently I am using linux-pf kernel with BFS scheduler and I/O scheduler elevator BFQ. What can I do to avoid this annoyance?

Swap space is extremely slow, so you don't want it to be used except as a last resort. Try in /etc/sysctl.conf:
vm.swappiness=0

I've a MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch Late 2013 and I'm using two external displays. One connected to to the HDMI port (display 1) the other to thunderbolt (display 2). The MacBook display is closed. I’m working with Logic Pro 9.1.8 (32bit) with OSX 10.9.1
Why the mouse pointer in Logic Pro does not change shape during work???
It was already difficult with OSX 10.9 but now after upgrading to 10.9.1 it's game over!
At least before I could select which display use Logic Pro to have all the shape functions of the pointer. Not in both displays, so to be forced to edit in ONLY ONE of the two displays using this workaround: (right click on Logic icon in Dock: Option --> Desktop on Display 1). Now or I select “Option --> All Desktops” or does not work. However, by selecting all displays you say goodbye to Mission Control. This can’t be a solution!!!
The amazing thing is that Nuendo has no problem while Logic Pro, Apple's native software, it can't!
With Nuendo it’s indifferent in which display you are working, the shape of the mouse pointer changes shape depending on the requirement in both displays.
This thing drives me crazy!
Solutions?
Here some ideas in other foums:
http://www.logicprohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=86264
But this aren't really solutions but workarounds. Use Logic in all desktops makes Mission Control useless!!I installed all over again by formatting as suggested by the genes of pro application support. Each plug-in, each virtual instrument, a job that lasted 3 days. And as suggested for each new plug-in I proceeded to check the proper functioning of Logic Pro and did each time a back up with Time Machine.
The Result:
Logic works as it should ONLY on the primary monitor and ONLY on the first desktop.
BUT
Reason and Nuendo dont' have this issue !!
I believe that Apple developers are thinking only to mobile phones and things like messages or face time.
And that's not all!
After a few weeks, perhaps by installing a version of Adobe Acrobat, I say maybe because I'm not sure, logic has stopped working properly. Again problems with the mouse pointer.
Luckily I had a back up! But now I'm terrified to install new programs. Thanks Apple! -
Why does Acrobat XI PRO freeze during save or save as tasks in Window 8?
Why does Acrobat XI PRO freeze during save or save as tasks in Window 8? It is intermittent, but CHRONIC, and I am forced to "repair" the installation, or reboot by computer. This has been a problem since upgrading to Windows 8 and installing the only Acrobat XI update. Feedback most welcome and appreciated, but an Adobe FIX would be the best solution.
10/4 to all, same problem here with Save or Save As in Acrobat XI Pro using Win 8 Pro, is it Adobe or Win 8 or both causing the problem.
FYI, I just retired and am trying to archive/reduce my printed material and pictures to pdf, this continuing problem is really the pits................. -
Server hangs or freezes during heavy load
During peak times of the day, especially during heavy load on the Calendar Server,
the application seems to hang. The client side application will not respond on
the user's desktop, and uni* commands on the server itself respond considerably
slow.

There are two parameters in the server configuration file that are strongly
believed to be a trigger of server hangs or freezes in large deployments and/or
busy servers. Here is a description of the problem:

Large deployments tend to be 3000+ users per node. This could be a single or
multi-node environment.

A lock manager fix was implemented in 4.0 to correct a problem that was
found in 3.51 where the server would hang. At that time, the parameters called
read/writelocktimeouts
were introduced as a failover mechanism in case the
database was not available, which would then trigger the client process to
disconnect rather than hang the whole server.

These timeouts effectively will terminate a process whose read or write exceeds
the specified periods. The default of 20 seconds is quite a large amount of time;
however, it is not totally unlikely that such a value could be met on a
very busy system. If this is the case, and there is some relation between a
process being terminated by one of these timeouts and subsequent system
instability, then the "solution" would not be to extend the values of the
timeouts but rather to exclude them. This way, it will ensure that no process is
terminated this way and therefore the process would be allowed to continue until
it had completed its job.

The timeouts were not removed from the product, but under normal circumstances
they probably won't be needed anymore anyhow. It seems that on a busy calendar
server, setting the db timeout alarms may actually trigger the server to freeze.
Below are some examples of errors that appear in the log files which show
that the database is no longer accepting client requests:

db_VISTA ERROR -920 -> cst_d_open: d_open
db_SchedBaseOpen: unable to open database
probable cause: unilckd is down or "/users/unison/tmp/unisonlckm"
was removed
uniengd: database lock timeout
ITEM: "NA,NA" <0,0>
CLIENT: "unises", "A.02.80"
INET-NAME:
INET-ADDR:
CALL: "SessionsInfoGet"

To make the fix:

Using your favorite editor, edit the /users/unison/misc/unison.ini file.
In the following section you will see these two parameters:

[ENG]
writelocktimeout = 20
readlocktimeout = 20

Place a "#" sign (or the appropriate comment symbol for your OS) in front of
these two lines and save the file.

The server will now have to be restarted in order for the changes to take
effect.

This looks similar to what I'm seeing.
DPM 2010, there's one backup set (for me a file server disk) that every time I try to run the initial replica on it the server hangs and needs to be rebooted by iLO. It doesn't just die suddenly, first the data stream on the backup stops then the OS becomes
less responsive but there is no resource issue. trying to open event view will cause a few things to lock up then over a few mins the server is complete froze. like the disk drives have been locked.
Suspecting McAfee, I added in all the exclusions, that didn't help so I added the process exclusions which are done by setting dpmra and csc to low risk and that didn't help either. I could reproduce it just by kicking off a backup for this one file servers
drive so it's easy to test with.
Tonight, I had some permissions in EPO to let me stop the scanning completely and disable the on-access scan and for the first time it worked!
There is definitely an issue between DPM and McAfee beyond what is on MS's web page for AV checks.
I don't have a workaround yet other than stopping the AV completely... Something to follow up on next week. For the moment I made some progress though. -
This is very very annoing and needs a software fix IMMEDIATELY APPLE!
I have this exact problem as well on my retina MBP 15" with 10.8.4. It's been going on at least since 10.8.3, but I'm unsure about anything before that since I bought this machine brand new in April. It's happened around 5 times during my ownership of it.
I read the solution you found (you mentioned this in another comment) about, but I had none of those LaunchServices/Daemons that people were talking about.
The freezing of the trackpad only seems to occur while using Safari, but it may be because I use Safari a lot that I'm drawn to that conclusion. Anyway, I haven't seen anything in Console.app about it.
Re: Trackpad is sometimes not working on MBP after OS X 10.8.2 upgrade
This guy also think it's Safari. I suspect it could even be a Safari extension.
I have these extensions installed, all activated:
* AdBlock 2.6.0
* ClickToPlugin 2.8.4
* 1Password 3.9.19
* DuckDuckGo 1.4.1
* Reddit Enhancement Suite 4.1.2
Of these, the DuckDuckGo extension was added last, and it's also my main suspect. It has an "Answer on right click" option in the settings. I don't know if it's possible that it could be interfering with the trackpad or its driver, but maybe.
If that's not it, I'm guessing corrupt caches or something like that.
OK now, this is what I've tried:
* Repair permissions
* Booting with Cmd+Opt+P+R
This is what I plan to try, individually:
* Run a tool like Maintenance to delete all caches and rebuild LaunchServices database.
* Disable Safari extensions individually for a week or two each.
* Switch to Firefox for a while.
* Remove .plist files relating to trackpad. I do not know which these are yet. -
Daqpad 6508 freezes during heavy usage
I am having a problem running a daqpad 6508 in a heavy i/o envirnment. This problem seems to be platform dependant, and I'm wondering if there is some way I can slow the Daqpad's usb timing so it doesn't freeze.
The problem is this: when I run an i/o heavy application (proprietary software using the latest Nidaq drivers) using the 6508 on my 1.3 ghz Dell (win2k) I have no significant problems. However, when I run the same application with the same OS on an embedded platform, the application freezes consistently. The embedded platform is a 500 mhz K6 running on a ALI1541 chipset. Is it possible that the 500 mhz is just too slow to adequately handle USB timings of this nature? or is there some way I can adjust my device so it
runs slower?
Thanks,
--saWhen you say "handle USB timings of this nature" and "heavy i/o" what are we referring to? How heavy is heavy I/O? Please give me some background on your program so I may determine just how CPU and/or bus intensive it may be.
The DAQPad-6508 is compatible with the USB 1.1 specification which states that maximum speeds are 1.5 Mbytes/sec. This is slower than PCI and other available busses.
The issue may also center around the USB driver for your embedded platform. Do you have any other USB devices that you could test out on this OS to verify that only the DAQPad is susceptible to the freezing problem you are seeing.
Furthermore, does the application generate an error or just lock up? What language are you programming in? Could you troubleshoot wh
ere the freeze occurs? During which calls to the NI-DAQ driver?

Why does my Ipod keep freezing during Facetime
While using Facetime the screen freezes, its very annoying, any ideas why this can happen? We have tried turning off all the apps that we are no longer using and turning Ipod off regularly.
Any other ideas?Not sure exactly what's going on here, but it might be worth taking a look at this Apple support document describing some of the ports that need to be opened on your router/modem in order for FaceTime to work properly.
Using FaceTime behind a firewall
There are plenty of other possible reasons you are running into issues, such as hardware or software issues on your iPod Touch device or perhaps with the other user's device on the other end.

Airport (Snow) freezes during heavy traffic
Anyone else have a problem with their airport base station freezing up during prolonged data transmission? I find that after a couple hours, the base station is totally unresponsive and needs to be reset the hard way (unplugging the power supply). Any suggestions or do i need to buy a new base station?
MacBook Pro 2GHz Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2GB RamI too have been having problems lately with the Airport/DSL set up. This roughly corresponded to upgrading our two notebooks to 10.4. For a while, all works well, then the Airport is unresponsive, needs restarting (sometimes that doesn't help either). I can be right next to the sation, and all of a sudden loose one of the signal bars. I belive the problem is with the Airport and not with the ISP becasue when I connect directly to the DSL modem with ethernet (as I am doing now), I have no problem connecting to the internet.
Occasionally when I turn my airport on and click on the network name I get a message says there was a problem joining the airport network.
I wonder if any of this has anything to do with 10.4?

Anybody else having this problem. Know how to fix it? My mini is the low-end mid 2011 model, using the mouse with the trackpad built in (magic mouse?).
Hello,
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

Logic Freezes During Playback w/ Disk Too Slow Error
I'm trying to mix a song in Logic 9.1.7, but it has gotten to the point where Logic immediately freezes as soon as I hit the playback button in order to actually listen to my project. Before this I was occasionally getting the Sudden Motion Sensor/ Disk Too Slow error. I have increased the buffer size to 1024 and set the buffer range to large. I haven even disabled the sudden motion sensor, just incase this was the problem. I am currently using a Macbook Pro which is not connected to the interface, so this shouldn't be a problem. However, I use a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 interface. The only third party plug-in that I am currently running on the project is the Focusrite Plug-in Suite - which I think might be the issue, considering that my other laptop is runing the same plug-in and having the exact same error. I already tried downloading every relevant software patch and update from the Focusrite website, all to no avail. I have been running Logic along with this plug-in, for over 2 years now and have never once had this problem. I haven't had any problem running Pro Tools, so obviously this problem is specific to Logic. This is incredibly frustrating, and I need this resolved soon. I have a deadline that I must meet by the end of the week.
Update: I just tried running Logic in 64-bit mode. It played for maybe a second and then gave me an error indicating that the plug-in suite was indeed keeping it from running properly. Guess I was right. It will play properly now, but contantly pops up with errors, not to mention that the HD and CPU meters are both constantly riding the red. I will put the most recent 64-bit error report log before the first one I got. I recieved the first one while still running 32-bit.

System freezes due to hard disk problems only on Linux (not windows)
Intro/context:
Recently i've bought (about 2 months) a new laptop, a Lenovo G50-70, which came with Windows 8.1. As i had no interest on that OS, i formatted the disk and installed only Arch Linux. During that time i experienced system freezes which i had no idea why they were happening. As time went by, i found disk errors on system logs related to hard drive. I searched those errors and almost everything i found was that my hard drive had problems, so i decided to use my warranty. But first, i installed the original OS back again. And after using it a couple of weeks, i didn't experiencie any problem with my hard drive (on Linux it was really frequent). Now i've installed Arch Linux back, along with original Windows 8.1, having dual boot. There is no disk problem when using Windows, but when on Arch, i have the same errors and problems i used to have. So i assume it may be related to kernel or some confniguration issue.
I also haven't noticed any relation between system freezes and system use. I mean, it can happen either under light or heavy use.
tl dr: system freezes randomly for some minutes when using linux due to hard drive problems. The problem doesn't happen on windows.
What i've done so far:
The first period i was on Arch, i run smart (long and short), fsck, and hdparm tests. And nothing (no errors). Searched for bad blocks, and nothing. When back on windows, i also run tests on hdd and found no problems, except some sector reallocation not-that-nice indicators. These problems occured at the end of the first arch installation period. But still i currently experience no problem on windows.
I've also tried setting libata: noncq, 3.0G, noacpi, noapic kernel parameters, and had no result.
Changed BIOS setting from AHCI to Legacy, and no result. Also updated BIOS and no result.
I found no firmware update for this hard drive.
So i don't know what other thing i can try. I want to emphasize that there is no problem, no freezing, when running Windows, so i don't think it's a hard drive issue.
Info:
Hard drive is a Toshiba 2.5" HDD MQ01ABD100 5400 rpm.
Some logs i've recollected all this time:

Last edited by jesu (2015-05-03 19:42:53)Something i'd noticed both the first time i was on arch and now i've reinstalled it, was that at first i didn't have this problem. I mean, when Arch was just installed. While i was installing and setting up everything.
Now, i'm not 100% sure about this, but i think problems began when using my current user. Disk is partitioned the following way:
$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 931,5G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 1000M 0 part
├─sda2 8:2 0 260M 0 part /boot
├─sda3 8:3 0 207,7G 0 part
├─sda4 8:4 0 25G 0 part
├─sda5 8:5 0 14,8G 0 part
├─sda6 8:6 0 80,5G 0 part /
├─sda8 8:8 0 599G 0 part /home
└─sda9 8:9 0 2G 0 part [SWAP]
So, i believe problems, for some reason, are related (and were related), both before and now, to the /home partition, /dev/sda8 in this ocassion.
Because of this, i booted into systemd rescue mode, like root, rw, and unmounted /home partition. Despite root-only limitations, i used the system for a couple of hours, started lxqt, browsed the web mainly, and experienced no problem at all.
Now i booted normally, with my regular user, and these problems are experienced just like before (and almost instantly, like 3 or 5 minutes after starting system use).
dmesg this time showed a some different log, though it's not the first time i see this. I just didn't saved that kind of log before.

Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Heavy background disk activity but not time machine
Since accepting the Software update that puts my version of ML as 10.8.2 I have began to notice a regular (every hour) constant heavy activity in one of my drives (yet to identify which one).
The said drive(s)?? whirr up and carry out activity that sounds as if it were carrying out a time machine backup BUT there is no indication that time machine is carrying out its job nor are any of the backups date/time stamped for the activity taking place.
Any ideas as to what is happening would be greatly appreciated as it is becoming rather annoying to listen to heavy background activity without being able to identify what is happening.
Thanks in advance
LesHi, Was looking through the forum because of a similar issue that occured twice yesterday. I was cleaning up and consolidating my externally connected disks (too many backups) 1 x USB connected, a NAS store and my Airport time capsule. After a long session of deleting files I got the spinning globe on the finder window, I could not access other apps to look at what was going on, but I could here the Time Capsule rattling away. Left it for 20 mins still the same, so had to crash the system to recover (hold power button in). Four hours later and more tidying up, went to shut down and again heard the Time capsule rattling away but this time I got to the white screen and the spinning circle. Twenty minutes later still not shutdown so another crash of the system.
I am not sure whether this problem is the same as you have described but there are similarities hence I thought I would post.
Hope we can find a resolution
Apologies need to update my profile, have iMac 27inch with 10.8.2

Why doesn't Illustrator recognize all of my hard disks when I go to select a scratch disk?
I have four dard drives installed on my Mac Pro. One is the 640 GB drive that came with it, one is a 500 GB drive and there are also two 1.5 TB drives. However, when I go to select the Scratch Disk in Illustrator CS5 it only lists the Start-up disk and Time Machine as my Scratch Disk options. What gives? Photoshop shows all of the hard drive options for Scratch disks.

T43p - Mouse pointer freezes after changing the battery to a new one
Hello,
I have bought a new battery for my IBM Thinkpad T43p. In the description of the new battery I have seen that this battery is compatible with T43 series. Battery details are: DC 10.8V 5200mAh/56Wh. Replace: 08K8214.
My problem is:
I have ordered a new battery for my Thinkpad T43p but when I turned off the notebook and replace the old battery with the new one the notebook became strange. I use Windows XP Prof on this computer and when the login screen appeared and during I was typing my user name and password the mouse pointer was freezed and I had to turn off the computer. It was happened within approx 1 minute after the Login screen appeared. The symptom was the same with or without plugged in AC charger. I have tried several times and the same behavior was happened. When I changed back the old battery the computer became normal again without any freezing. The fan was working properly in both cases. The symptom is the same if I change the battery during AC charging and using Windows.
I don't have an idea about the reason of it. Can you help me with ideas?
Thanks in advance,
SliderPull the battery out and run the machine on AC only. Does it freeze now?
If it doesn't, the "new" battery needs to be replaced.
Good luck.
Cheers,
George
