Why my quicktime player can't play an mpeg file

I have a quicktime player that goes with snow leopard mac-os, but this does not play with an mpeg file dvd

QuickTime X and QuickTime Player 7.6.6 can't play MPEG-2 formats without additional software.
DVD Player should be used, instead.

  • Flash player can't play a .swf file alone

I've have a weird issue regarding flash.
I used Flash CS5 to create an interactive presentation. Everything works perfectly.
My problem is, for some unknown reason, everytime I try to open a stand alone .swf using flash player, the player always opens my interactive presentation instead  and tries to load the .swf INTO it. Using the finder's info window, when I do select a .swf, I get the information all my .swf have been changed to "interactive presentation files", and the default application assigned to open these files is my own presentation.
I can manually change these settings to select Flash player or Flash CS5 back as the default application for all .swf's, but as soon as I close the info window, the files immediately becomes "interactive presentation" files again, so Flash player insists in openning the fiels inside my presentation.
There's a permanent way to fix this?
I'm using a Mac Intel core duo 2.
EDIT: I temporarily solved the problem deleting all copies of my presentation's projector. The flash player atemmpted to use another presentation instead to open .swf files, so I deleted that one too. After that, now plays the .swf files as normal. The only problem is, if for any reason I do re-install any of my interactive presentations proyectors, Flash player  immediately tries to use them to play the .swf's... so the problem really remains unsolved.

  • Quicktime Player won't play avi files all of a sudden

All of a sudden Quicktime Player won't play my avi files. They worked previously. I could play them with Quicktime 7 with or without Perian. I'm running 10.6.4.
They'll run fine on my MacBook and I don't have Perian installed on it.
    Any ideas?

I just uninstalled Flip4Mac and everything is working as it's supposed to. Very strange. Perhaps a conflict with Perian? But then again, QT didn't play the avi files with Perian installed. So, I guess the conflict is with Flip4Mac and something else.
    Thanks anyway

  • HT3775 Can someone direct me as to how I check whether I have the media formats and codecs that QuickTime Player can play back using my Mac Pro?

I'm trying to use quicktime on my macbook pro but I receive the message below when I make an attemp to use it.  Any suggestions?
Media formats supported by QuickTime Player
QuickTime Player natively supports the following media formats and codec components. You can also extend QuickTime to support additional codecs and components.
Below are the media formats and codecs that QuickTime Player can play back in Mac OS X v10.6.x or later:

More alternatives to Quicktime. VLC is recommended a lot.
    Video Player - Divx
    Video Player – Flip4Mac
    Video Player - VLC

Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

  • HT3523 hello, this is the error I get when I try to play a video QuickTime Player can't open "solea-antonio-walter.mov" because a required codec isn't available. Any idea what I need to do? thank you

    Hello,
This is the error message I get when I try to watcha burnt dvd, can anyone tell me what I need to do?
    thank you
QuickTime Player can't open "solea-antonio-walter.mov" because a required codec isn't available.

Quicktime X is a great little piece of software. However, Quicktime X is very finicky on which codec/file format it can decode/play.
Luckily, there are DOZENS of alternative video/media players and extensions available for the Mac. Some of them are even FREE. Some of the better FREE ones include...
    PERIAN (quicktime extension)
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian
    QUICKTIME 7.6.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
    VLC Media Player
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5758/vlc-media-player
    NICEPLAYER
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15136/niceplayer
... And if none of those work, there is a possibility that, that video file may be corrupted.

Google 'Perian' and 'Flip4Mac' — these are the extensions that will make QT play other file formats.
However, a simpler solution is just to abandon QT in favour of the free, open-source player VLC, which plays just about everything natively without further downloads.
Download the free VLC Player from here:
    http://www.videolan.org
Plays just about everything, including avi & mpg, without add ons.

  • Save as quicktime file so quicktime player can be used after right-click

    Hey,
I'm adding short .aiff's to a site for people to right click and save.
-I'm making the .aiff using logic express.
    -Bouncing to desktop.
-Changing file to "open using quicktime player" which makes the file look like a quicktime file with the big "Q" on it. When I double click on the file, it opens with quicktime player.
-Creating text box and linking .aiff (actually they are .aifc) file to text box, just regular stuff for creating links for files.
-After I publish site to folder. When I go in and right click on the link to save to desktop, the file I thought used quicktime player becomes an itunes .aiff file with the itunes colors (green) and opens using itunes, thus adding the file to my itunes library.
I'd like people to be able to just open the .aiff and quicktime player would automatically play the file, this way unwanted stuff won't be added to itunes library.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks, byt
ps, I've been looking up the difference between .aiff and .aifc. It looks as if they are about the same except you can compress .aifc. Does it really matter which is which if you're not compressing or anything and just clicking and playing?
imac g5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Woodwinds, presonus firebox, Garageband and Logic Express, iweb

-After I publish site to folder. When I go in and
right click on the link to save to desktop, the file
I thought used quicktime player becomes an itunes
.aiff file with the itunes colors (green) and opens
using itunes, thus adding the file to my itunes
    library.
I think this is a function of how someone's browser is set up or maybe system preferences that associate file types with certain default applications. For instance, you can take the .aiff file on your desktop that is currently associated with iTunes (and has the iTunes icon)....right click on it and select "Open with..." In the opened window select QuickTime player and then check the "Always Open With" box. This will make QuickTime player the default player of .aiff files instead of iTunes. So you see how it is a user defined variable in terms of which application opens which document.
I'd like people to be able to just open the .aiff and
quicktime player would automatically play the file,
this way unwanted stuff won't be added to itunes
    library.
An alternative would be to convert your sound files to .mov files that will by system default be opened by QuickTime player directly...just like iTunes is the system default for .aiff sound files.
If you have found any of this information to be useful to you, please take the time to provide me with feedback by marking my reply as "solved" or "helpful" using those little buttons that you see in the title bar of this reply. I'd really appreciate it!

  • HT1338 Quicktime Player no longer plays under Mountain Lion

Quicktime Player no longer plays under Mountain Lion.  It loads, I can see the video but it does not move when clicked on to advance. It does move page by page mannually with the arrow buttons but does not play when clicked on the video advance button.

    Is this a known problem?
Yes, if you mean that the MOV file may contain data that is not supported by the QT X AV Foundation, Modernizer, and Convert 64-bit QT X structures embedded in the Mavericks and Yosemite operating systems but still supported by the 32-bit QT 7 structure still included in these operating systems and/or supported by the "open" codec configuration accessible by QT 7.
Has the format of mov files been changed?
I don't believe the file container format has changed but security updates and/or Mavericks/Yosemite codec support limitations may fail to recognize or support a particular file container/data compression format combination. Since you have not provided any information regarding the data actually contained in the MOV file, it is impossible to be more specific here. However, in most cases it is possible to use any of the available FFmpegX based transcoding utilities to manually convert unsupported data to file/compression combinations that are compatible with both QT X and QT 7 based apps under any current Mac OS X systems.

  • I have an MPEG4 movie running.  I don't know why but Quicktime Player will not let me open this file now to shut it down.  Any tips on how to do this?  I've tried installing an older version QuickTime Player 7.  OS Maveriks

I have an iMac with an OSX 10.9.5.  I have an MPEG4 program that is running.  QuickTime Player can't open it up for me to stop it.  What are my options?  I've tried downloading QuickTime Player 7, an older version but that hasn't helped.

Not sure what you mean then. Is QuickTime still open and playing the video? If so, do you mean you can't even get back to QT to shut it down?
Check the Dock for the QT logo. Click it to bring that app to the foreground. The menu bar then should say QuickTIme Player next to the Apple logo. Close the app and the video will shut down with it.

  • I keep getting "The application QuickTime player can't be opened" -1712

I just upgraded to Lion on Thursday, and now I can't open QuickTime. Whenever I try to, I get the message "The application QuickTime player can't be opened" -1712
    Any ideas?

Same here. I never had to download Adobe Reader when I was using Snow Leopard in order to open PDF's - it's supposed to be a built in feature of OS X to be able to click and open any PDF. Now I have to go and use external software (that's supposed to be built in already into the OS X) in order to open my files. I think this is a bug that Apple needs to sort out asap.

  • My quicktime player won't play any videos on my Mac X os. The video will start on quicktime then automatically start

My quicktime player won't play any videos on my Mac X os. The video will start on quicktime then automatically start. I installed DiV X today and all this happened is there anyway to fix this?? I went through everything dragging the icon to the trash and deleting it from safari extentions.

    Download and install
    Perian from  http://perian.org/
You should read this support page  http://perian.org/#support   in case you need to delete older codecs.  In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them), particularly any DivX extension to Safari. However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from  http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac  Note that Perian will be discontinued after the release of Mountain Lion:  http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57434082-263/perian-plug-in-for-quicktime-t o-be-discontinued/?tag=txt;title
