givenidpod and losts of itunes $$ for xmas, have no credit card, can i still use? can you download w/o account. why does account need creditcard if i already have itunes prepaid card??

When asked create a new account - you will be given
the option to proceed without CC details
Hmmm... I've just been through this and didn't see that option (which doesn't mean it wasn't there, although I also had my brother check it, and he's a frequent iTunes Store user).
Our solution was for him to use his account, but now, of course, I can't play the tracks I purchased without his password!
This all came about because I don't have a credit card with a US billing address (I live in Australia).

Usually just confirms the country you live in - you might not be going to make any purchases from the store but Apple are going to assume you will, and you can only buy from the store for your own country for copyright reasons. The credit card number verifies the country you are living in.

You don't need to enter credit card details if you follow, exactly, the instructions on the HT2534 page that you posted from when creating an account - if you don't use those instructions then you will need to enter credit card details before you can download any item from the store (you should be able to remove the card's details after entering them).

Sound like they did what is called an express replacment. What apple does is they put a hold on your Credit Card for the amount of the cord because they are sending you the cord first. Then, once you receive the new cord in about 2-3 days, you'll put the defective cord in the box and ship it back out and when they receieve the defective one, they'll be able to remove that hold from you card.
I believe the reason behind the hold on your card is incase you don't return your defective one to them so they can find out the cause of the issue.
An Apple Retail Store could swap them out for you in store incase you happen to be near one. This requires no hold.

To create an Apple ID without a credit or debit card, there is a specific series of steps that have to be processed in order to allow the payment to be set as none on creation of the account.

If the specific steps have not been processed, a credit or debit card will be required to complete the setup the account.
However, it can be removed and payment method changed to none as long as there is not an outstanding balance.

I had the sam problem this weekend and I contacted my bank and Apple. My bank's response was professional and positive, but Apple's response was very very shoddy. I had to weave through automated menus and referrals to multiple apple web sites. This treatment continued for two days until I was finally forwarded to Maria. She took this seriously and helped as best she could.
Unfortunately I think Apple is taking a very cavalier approah to a potentially serious security breach. After loyally purchasing 3 I-Phone 4s, 3 I-Pod touches, 2 I-pods, 1 Nano, 3 Apple TVs, 2 macbook pros, 1 mac, and Ipad over the last 5 years apple is on the verge of losing my business.

Was the card issued in and have a billing address in the country whose iTunes Store you wish to use? If not, that's why it's being rejected.
