Why Nexflix on Apple TV

Question

Am I the only one not understanding why apple is offering Netflix on Apple TV and other portable Apple devices. It was my understanding that Netflixs was a competitor to Apple and it's Itunes movie store. Why has Apple opened the door. Besides money am I missing something ? As a hardcore Apple user, share holder and customer, Im a bit concerned about Apple direction it is taking. I almost feel as if Apple has thrown in the towel with Apple TV. I will continue to hold onto my 3 Apple TV's in my household and not upgrade if you could even call it that. With my current Apple TV it's nice to be able to take my movies and photos with me when I'm out of town or on vacation. personally dumb move on Apple's part.

Probably because from what we outside the US (who can't use it anyway) read, Netflix is so common on electronic AV goods these days in the US that it's popularity would be seen as a selling point.

As much as you like your old units (so do I), by their own admission original AppleTV did not sell well - I can think of several reasons why that have not been adressed by this, but they are trying to make it a success.
Being far cheaper is clearly a plus point for new users, and I think it's fairly and squarely aimed at a different target audience to the original device - it is less about your own media (remember you could not access itunes store or rent originally) than pushing a new rental business model, and I'm absoutely convinced it is designed as a must have accessory for iPhone/iPodTouch and iPad users using Airplay for media playvack - the ability say for iPhone users to play video/photos taken on their phones wirelessly on the big screen with touch screen control will be seen as a must have accessory for these device and at the price it should sell better.
Clearly lack of onboard storage is a shame for those who like it now, but it would have added to the cost to have any worthwhile capacity without using mechanical drives. I'm a bit surprised they didn't stick an SD slot in it, as they seem to be adding them to other devices, even though i have no use for SD myself currently.
